[Q] Can you flash stock kernel with CWM? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have been looking around and messing with different kernels for the SGS2E4GT (pauses for breath) and I've noticed that most of the stock kernels have directions for flashing via Odin, but I was wondering if these kernels would be possible to flash via CWM as well...I've noticed that most of these compressed flashable files have this zImage file inside (sorry about my lack of knowledge...I've been in webOS-land the last couple years and have just started learning about Android, so this is probably standard practice)...do I just need to take a stock zImage file from the .tar file and compress it in .zip form to flash it in CWM?

[Q] Odin EB13 SPH-D700.zImage.stock.tar

I am trying to flash my Kernel back to factory, i do not want to wipe the whole thing just remove a Kernel Mod and restore the factory kernel. Where can I find the SPH-D700.zImage.stock.tar file that I keep reading about that I need to achieve this? I can not seem to find this file any place.

You could go to the wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
Download EB13 Stock
Pullout the zImage file.
Download a flashable Kernel zip
and put the zImage from the stock tar, into the zip. That would give you a zip you could use to put the stock kernel back on.
You can use 7-zip to open the tar file and pull out the zImage file and subsequently use 7 zip to open the zip for the kernel you download (like twilight, vision or genocide)
hope that helps. as always backup first.

Really man? You couldn't read the sticky at the top that says what to do with Q's?
Moved to Q&A.

Question regarding the zImage

So I am still learning how everything functions with this new setup. My only question that I have right now, is If I want to change the kernel of a ROM prior to flashing it, do I just need to replace the zImage file with the one that I want.
ie. ROM A comes with source EG30, and ROM B comes with stock pulled EG30, Can I just take the zImage from ROM B and drop it into ROM A, sign and flash?

Yes, you can do that. But use 7zip because it doesn't break the signed .zip. Right click on the file after installing 7zip and choose 7zip > Open Archive and just paste the zImage you want in there.

[Q] Stock EI22 kernel with root?

Is there a stock 2.3 kernel, based off EI22, with minimal amount of changes but is rooted?
I want to run some tests with the audio out on the dock using different kernels but still want to retain root on all of them.
Sounds like you're 100% EI22 stock right now, with stock kernel and recovery.
If that is the case, then open this link and you can start at step #6:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19444784&postcount=93
On step #11, you can just flash the SU.zip file to obtain root. That should get you to what you want.
This is this the original thread for the kernel in the above linked post.
rooted stock kernel
I did my phone in the same way but I used stock kernel. I used Odin and flashed ACS recovery(personal choice). Instead of checking Auto Reboot in Odin I let it pass then I manually rebooted my phone and booted into ACS from there I flashed the SU zip. after rebooting it deleted my Recovery but I had root. Using Root Explorer app I deleted two files in the system folder. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19232630&postcount=7 that link has the file names and also a link to a longer explanation on the recovery removal thing. After deleting those files. I odined my recovery back and I had a stock kernel with root and custom recovery. Hope i have given you one way to do it.
Thanks for the information. I was kinda hoping that somebody had just put together a stock kernel with root that I could just flash, either zip or odin. Seems like my only option will be to flash stock and use the zip to get root.
Just want to do some testing with different kernels.
Thanks again.

KERNEL DEV: How do I make a boot.img and flashable zip?

How do I do this?
I have:
a modded power.tuna.so
zImage
I always get bootloops when trying to make a boot.img
Flashing the zImage works perfectly. But as soon as I try making a boot.img with ramdisk I am screwed
I always had problems making it flashable too, I xoyks never get it. So I Always just flashed the zImage only when I built kernels. There are lots of guides though I know.
BTW what code did you change?

[Q] Partitions and TouchWiz JB

So, I think the TouchWiz (Odin) FK23 update changes the partition table. My question is now about how to update with a ZIP file now. Everything indicates to use CWM EL29, but are the changed partition tables a problem? I know on other phones I've owned the partition table is set up at boot, so for example if you repartition, every time you flash a new kernel/ROM you have to flash another zip to change the the kernel's hardcoded partition table (excuse any incorrect terminology here, I'm specifically referring to Firerat's on the HeroC). However I know Samsung kernels are very different from HTC.
So, most specifically, if I want to update to FL16 via a ZIP from FK23 stock Odin'ed and keep my data partition, can I use EL29? Should I use the AGAT FK23 repack? Or do I need to Odin back to EL29 or something more major ahead of time?
Thanks for your help!
Just odin cwm5 (el29) kernel and do your nandroid , wipe and flash.
