[Q] CWM 5 Internal SD Card Issue (Mount, Backup, Restore) - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I know I'm not the first person to post about it. I've seen this problem mentioned numerous times, and what follows is the simple instructions of re-flashing cwm. However, let's not jump ahead of ourselves.
The problem:
I do not have an external sd card. When I go into cwm 5 and try to create a NANd backup, I'm told the cwm cannot mount my sd card. I would like to create the backup in the internal card. If I go to Mount and Storage and try to mount sd card, I'm told the same. This basically boils down to not being able to make a backup via cwm. So far I have found no work-around except to flash cwm 4.0, but this gets "undone" every time I update my rom of choice (ie. StarBurst). Naturally, I would like to find a way to make backups without having to revert cwm to v4 every time.
PARAMETERS:
1. I do not have an external sd card.
2. I have already tried re-flashing cwm v5 numerous times, since most posts simply instructed to re-flash the latest cwm.
3. CWM v4 does detect (and allows backups to) the internal sd card.
4. I paid for Titanium Backup Pro and use it regularly. I am,thus, not looking for a simple "restore data with Titanium" answer. I would like to make NANd backups in case I need to revert changes after a bad flash, etc.
So, wall of text over, does anyone have any answers / insight into the topic? I'm sorry if this is a duplicate, but I promise that I did search first, and apart from sporadic posts on the subject, found no real match to my situation.
Thanks

The functionality was taken out. I don't know the details, but something was getting borked up with internal sd. I believe your options, for now, are limited to what you already know.
1) Re-Flash v4 every time you flash a kernel or ROM with v5
OR
2) Bite the bullet and buy an SD card. I'll admit, I don't really get why this may be a problem, but we all have out reasons for things.
Anyhoo, I hope this helps. Maybe someone more intimate with CWM can chime in with more info or correct me if I'm wrong.

Getting "Error mounting /sdcard" when formatting.

Hi guys.
I'm having a bit of trouble restoring my ROM after testing the ICS. What happened was I flashed the ICS ROM, played around with it, then decided to go back to my original ROM (CM7) which I had made a nandroid backup of through recovery.
I did a full wipe through recovery (CWM 5.0.2.0), but when I came to format the sdcard, it said error mounting /sdcard, skipping format. At first I though it was the sdcard, so I got a new one, formatted it on my pc and retried. It failed again. I can't mount the sdcard to my pc too.
I tried partitioning using amonRA recovery too, it didn't work either. I don't think it's an sdcard issue, so I'm not sure what's going on. I can't flash any ROM now, the only thing working is booting to CM7 in safe mode, but I don't know what use that would be.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Please let me know if I can give any more information to help you out.
Thanks.
Hi!
Welcome to the forums
Sorry to see you are having trouble, let me help you out:
Why are you formatting your SD card in the fist place?? If your phone doesn't recognize the SD card there is little you can do. Seeing as it doesn't read the new SD card either is no surprise as the files for the Recovery are on the SD card..
Do you have an SD-Card reader? Try connecting it to your PC/Mac/Whatever using that and see what happens. It could be your phone, and not your SD-Card after all
USUALLY a nandroid backup does not require wiping for restoration. And wiping doesn't mean you wipe your SD card.
Good Luck,
AU
I connected the sdcard to my pc and I accessed it without any issues. I found .dm files in it though, some sort of debug logs.
Hmm, sounds weird.
Have you tried formatting it on your computer and then formatting it on your phone? Can't see why it should help, just troubleshooting here.
Perhaps your card is dead
Why are you formatting your SD-Card in the first place, if you're only doing a nandroid restore?
Try different recovery, CWM can get picky. Or you can try formatting card within Android. Use SDFormatter in Windows.
I followed these steps and it worked. Now I can access the SD Card.
Thanks anyway for your help guys. I appreciate your support.

want to start over

ok i have a 6gb card and want to start totally clean.
So my plan is to titanium/or my backup everything. Nandroid and make a recovery. Move that backup to pc. Wipe data, format, make my partitions( any suggestions with 16 gb card). Move "Rom" to sd boot and restore...
Is that correct, this is what i used to do with my ogevo.
Also can i rename my backups? on my evo anytime i did that and tried a restore it hAD some issue with md5.

Renaming has been hit or miss for me
Hit the thanks button if I helped you
I'm not sure about partitioning.
You can rename your clockworkmod backups but they cannot contain ANY spaces in the filename.
For some reason, I cannot copy nandroids via the usb cable to my pc because if I ever copy them back, they fail the MD5 and it's a PIA to repair them. So to resolve this I have to combine all my nandroids to external SD, pull the card and mount it in a reader on the pc. If I ever need to copy any of those back to the phone, I do the reverse (pull SD, mount on pc, copy files back over).
Also, I always format the SD on the phone, never through the pc to make sure the file system is correct for the phone.
Starting totally clean for me involves no backup of any kind. Its a longer process but worth the time if you have a rom you know you will run for a long time.
Since I wipe all my data anyway, I usually use Tulu to backup my apps and thats about it. you can partition anyway you choose, however partitioning is not neccesary at all. just create a folder on the SD named "ROM" and place any roms you want to flash in it. creating partitions would make your like a bit more difficult. but if you do I reccommend allocation at least 3-4GB for roms.

New Rom Manager/Clockwork won't see my sd card, help please

So I have been using Rom Manager/Clockwork recovery since I got the S3 (sprint),
I have all my backups on the sd card (external). It asked me to update Rom Manager/new clockwork mod for Sprint,
so I did. Now I can not see any of my sd card contents and backups. In Clockwork recovery I go to backups and see none,
I go to install zip from sd card and it shows all the files in the phones INTERNAL system memory, not my external sd card,
I maybe I am a noob (not really), but I can not find out how to get clockwork recovery to see the external sd card instead of the
internal, so I can get at my files/backups. Maybe it is a problem since I have the 32gb S3 instead of the 16gb standard?

Go to the bottom of the menu in ROM Manager and choose the all versions (or something like that). You should have the option to flash an earlier version of CWM. Choose the earliest version, flash it, reboot into recovery, and you should be fine. I would give you version numbers, but I have moved to TWRP for recovery.
Just use twrp its better in every way
Well thanks, kinda. Going back to the earliest version of clockwork DOES allow me to see the files on the SD card (external),
but now under ext sd/clockworkmod/backup/ ALL my backups say the name with / after it such as 2012-08-16-Stock/
when I chose one, it says no files found, Like it is looking at a directory instead of the backup file which should NOT have a / after it.
Any ideas?
Yeah, but you can't use your old clockwork/nandroid backups with twrp,
so I would lose everything!
Ok, I got it to work using the oldest clockwork recovery and not being an idiot.
Once I was able to see the external sd card, I was trying to install my backup from zip.
When I went to backup and restore and restored it from there, it allowed me to chose the
correct file and it worked. And yes, twrp looks slick and allows choosing internal or ext sd,
if I had a new phone without a bunch of stock and cyano backups already in clockwork,
I would go with twrp. But twrp SHOULD make the clockwork mod backups compatible, or offer
a converter program, because who can really switch if they can't use any of their old backups?

Copy those CWM backups over to your computer (rename them as needed to be able to remember what they are). Install TWRP and start using it for your backups. If you ever need/want to go back to one of those earlier backups you can always go flash CWM over TWRP and re-install them. If you want to, you could even do a restore in CWM then flash TWRP, then back it up in TWRP, back to CWM, back to TWRP, etc., until you have them all in both formats. Depending upon how many backups you have that may or may not be all that time consuming.

Nice idea, but CWM has been the standard and reliable for so long. I don't know if I would trust my
backups to TWRP yet. But maybe I could start using it and just save a couple old backups one of Cyano and one stock.
I don't want any black screens, bricks, or problems because I don't know ADB and am not great with problems/odin.
Will TWRP give me more or less headaches than Clockwork witch I am used to? And can you run it from a phone app like
Rom Manager runs clockwork?
Thanks guys
Gotta admit, I'm fairly new to TWRP myself, but I am not aware of an integrated app like ROM Manager and CWM. As far a reliability, I know TWRP has been around a while and while it may not be as widespread as CWM I trust most of the people who I checked with who say that TWRP is not only as good as CWM, but even better. I know it takes a while to get used to a new UI and program, but with time I am sure I will feel as comfortable with TWRP as I was with CWM.
no sdcard (microsd)
same issue, have tried a variety of different rom manager versions. Want to do a full wipe/clean flash but need the card working for the rom and gapps after the wipe.
Any suggestions?
Had to get card formatted fat32.. All good!

[HELP!!?!!?] SD Card and Recovery Problems

Here's a lovely and vague one for you all to try wrap your heads around...
Okay, so I started having trouble with my SD card about a year ago after my mate added a partition so I could flash A2SD ROMs (I believe - I was stuck and asked him to sort it and from what I can gather, that's what he did). It was fine for a while, then suddenly it became nigh on unresponsive to Android: I couldn't take photos, install apps to SD, basically any data transfer between the device and the SD storage was not happening. I think this was after I tried to delete some things to make room for videos and **** but I was stuck on about 300MB of the ~2GB available (this may have been my first attempt to delete after the partition, I'm not sure).
That was the birth of a problem I am still yet to fix. My dad needed a new phone and I wasn't using my Desire anymore. He's 53, and so the Sense UI was less than intuitive to him which lead to me offering to make it a bit simpler for him (flash a stock ROM and use a more information-centric launcher). The device badly needed updating anyways as I hadn't done so since my mate partitioned my SD card and some bugs had began to develop on the ROM I was using. So, I downloaded the latest CM build and set about reformatting the storage to see if I could solve some of the issues. In attempting to do so I think I performed a data, cache and dalvik cache wipe which removed the ROM I was currently using. The partitioning was successful, so I transferred the new ROM and attempted to flash - BOOM! Error message. Tried again, same thing. Now I have a phone that'll only boot into a recovery that's 5 full versions old (CM Recovery v2.5.0.7) without a way to flash an update img. I've tried on many different occasions to try and sort the problem and spent relentless hours trying to research a solution to the numerous different error messages this produces. Every error I can remember was a problem with read/write on the SD card, so I purchased a new one to no avail.
The phone CAN'T be bricked, surely. I still have access to things like USB mounting (which works absolutely fine), and most importantly, access to the recovery. Please don't tell me she won't live on, this is my baby and she's going down fighting! :'(
TL;DR SD card read/write issues. I only have access to recovery. I can mount the SD card via USB in CM Recovery, but every time I try to flash a new ROM I get numerous different read/write errors.

There you can download 4ext recovery that can be flashed via fastboot or using some flasher.
When you flash it repartition your sd card, choose only one sd-ext partition (not bigger than 1,5gb), no swap and fat32 for thevrest of your card.
After repartitioning try to flash some rom and see how it will work.

[Q] Cleaning my internal memory before ROM flash

I flash a lot of roms on my phone. Recently I noticed that there was a lot of left over programs and apps on my internal memory. I have nothing on the phone I want to keep that is not already backed up via TitaniumBackup.
What I would like to do, is wipe everything that I can without messing up partitions or Mount points or the needed stuff in ./data/media so I can flash a new room on a totally clean phone (except for the nessasary files needed like the data/media stuff and recovery stuff ect..)
Normally when I flash I do this: (in TWRP)
1. Nandroid backup
2. Wipe/factory restore
3. Wipe data and system again
4. Flash new ROM
5. Wipe devlik/cache
6. Reboot
When I finally get to the desktop I start up root explorer and look around my internal memory. This is were I still see a lot of old apps still sitting there. I want them gone. I'm afraid to wipe/format internal memory while in TWRP because I will lose everything right ? Even the stuff that is needed to boot the phone to recovery.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks

Go in twrp and click wipe, advanced, and click everything. after wiping Mount the phone to PC via twrp and move the rom and kernel to sd card. Unmount then do the steps you usually do to install a ROM, including wipe.

If you have your TiBu backups, nandroids, and ROM zips, pictures, videos, etc already on your SD card; there is no harm in formatting your internal memory. You won't lose recovery, you won't have a problem with booting, nothing of that sort.
When I was running SynergyRom on my S3, wiping Internal memory was usually Always suggested because of the reasons you mentioned.
Move your Nandroid and files you want to flash to your extSdCard card for obvious reasons.
I have TWRP 2.5.0.2 as my Recovery, which has been running without issues for months.
Enter Recovery:
Press -
Wipe
Format Data
As a safety valve, you'll be asked to Type in Yes to continue this Internal wipe.
You'll retain the partitions you mentioned.
I think the above will get you to where you want to be.
You can always double check afterward as you've already done before.
