[Q] Use a ROM or just delete stock apk's with Root Explorer?

I noticed in the Advanced Task Manager that the bloatware apps I never use are always running. Amazon MP3, Google Voice, Sprint Football Live, etc.
I want to get rid of them to maximize battery life. I used to flash ROMs on my previous phone but the options for the Evo seem a lot more custom, with some not supporting certain standard phone features.
Is the best thing in my case to flash a ROM to get a clean task list (I want to keep all normal functions including Sense), and if so which one, or would it be better to delete all the stock apk's manually with Root Explorer?
Also I flashed the kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763 which I thought would boost my Fps2D rates above 30 but it hasn't made a difference.

Most of the custom ROMs are based off Sense, so the easy way to go would be to flash one and call it a day. Most of the bloatware will already be removed for you, and they all have performance tweaks as well. I use Fresh 3.2.0.0 as my daily driver and recommend it highly. Other good ones that I've tried are Evio, Virus, and Baked Snack.
Which kernel did you flash? I'm pretty sure that all of Netarchy's kernels have the fps uncapped so there might be something else going on. I hate to ask this, but are you sure you flashed it properly? Go to menu > settings > about phone > software information and make sure that your kernel version is the one you intended to flash.

Ok thanks. I guess my main concern was that some roms seemed to have a different UI in the screenshots.
How should I restore my apps, Titanium or nandroid?

It's just a skin over the SenseUI. All the Sense functionality is still there.
Nandroid doesn't restore your apps, it restores your entire system and returns your phone to the exact condition it was in when you made the nandroid.
Titanium is a great utility and makes it painless to to try out new ROMs. Back up your user apps and settings and then restore after you flash the new ROM.

I definitely want to keep everything as close to stock as possible without the bloatware. CM6 is out because it doesn't have Sense, so what's the second best? I am looking at about 8 options right now and the details seem like a lot to parse through, so I appreciate your insight.

If that's the case then maybe just keep the stock ROM and delete the bloatware. Titanium actually has a setting called Chuck Norris mode that lets you delete the bloatware. Just be sure to back it up before you delete it just in case you deleted something important. There are a couple threads here that have lists of .apks that are safe to remove, I suggest you do a search and find them so you know what is and isn't safe.
What did you figure out about the kernel and your fps?

Ok, thanks I'll give that a shot. I may end up trying CM6 anyway as I don't have 4G in my area and I'm curious to see what the alternative to Sense is.
You were right about the kernel. It was showing the stock kernel under software info, so I flashed netarchy's again and am up to 54 stdev 4 on Fps2D now. Thanks!

Do I want to know why you installed Google Voice yourself (Sprint doesn't ship it), but yet call it bloatware and don't simply remove it?
Exactly how do you expect GV to do what it does, and *not* be running? You don't *want* voicemail notifications?
As for the other apps, this is Android, not Windows. Just because something is in the task list doesn't mean it's consuming CPU cycles.

Thanks for this clarification, I was not aware of this distinction. My impression was that all tasks use up cycles. Is there more information about this somewhere?
On another note, the Fusion Froyo ROM looks like it might do just about what I'm looking for so I think I'll give that a shot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744368

There's a ton on info on the subject, but the most thorough write-up I've found can be read here. it as written before froyo, but it's even more true now.

very cool - that was one of the first apps I actually bought, and I would say that its a "must have" for folks that get into the nitty gritty of their phones or are trying to hunt down rougue apps. It's great not just for the battery monitor, either. I did a mini-write up for it just today in another thread here.

Bump for the awesomeness that is SystemMonitor. I hope people realize they shouldn't be using task killers or SetCPU as Android automatically modulates both of those to maximize battery life.
IMO the best option to further battery life is to use an awesome kernel. I personally prefer Netarchy 4.1.9.1 with HAVS for the familiarity, stability and voltage modulation, but the newest HTC kernel included with Fresh 3.2.0 is supposed to be even better. King's is also reported to be close to improving battery life as much as the newest HTC one does.

I know, that new kernel is supposed to be sick. I can't wait for more devs to start tearing it up in their own releases.

So I successfully rooted my evo using the unrEVOked method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304 (I have hboot .97) I'm already using the free wifi tether (main reason for rooting) and I'm experimenting with setCPU. I also have Titanium Backup pro and have backed up all of my apps and whatnot. I want look look around for different roms and/or kernels. If anyone can make some suggestions, it'd be appreciated. I like the stock 2.2 layout, but if there's something that'll work better, can you point me in the right direction? Also, I'd like to be able to not have to find all of my apps again, and if possible, keep the app data too (i.e. I have shazam and would like to keep all of my tags). Also, if someone can point out the proper method for loading the roms/kernels, that'd be appreciated too!

go with fresh. . its by far the most stable and it doesnt prevent anything .. 4g flash, all sense stuff .. easily one of the more popular roms..

I am a huge fan of Avalaunch mods. AvaFroyo10 was just released, and I love it. He focuses on high quality multimedia. The audio is better than most other roms. He also has tweaked the APN so it will lock on to Verizon towers for 3G if Sprint has 1 bar or less.

i am also a giant fan of ava, but i am getting no battery power. as an experiment, i unplugged my phone with full power, no use, and it was fully drained in 7 hours. ava works on some phones but not others.

myns RLS4...its such eye candy n a swarm of kernels to overclock to..very fast n stable rom with no fcs

[Q] Just rooted HTC Incredible, have a few questions.

Hello! I've had my HTC Incredible for a few months now, and only just decided to root my phone to the unrevoked3 method for root access.
I did this primarily because I'd like to overclock my phone to run faster, and I'd like to wirelessly tether it without paying any fees to Verizon.
My first question is -- what are the best ways to do that? I know there's a Wireless Tether for Rooted Users app, but I want to make sure I download the right one that won't get me charged by Verizon later down the road. Also, what is the best app for overclocking my Incredible?
I have a few other questions related to rooting my Incredible:
- How exactly does the root work with the SD card? It doesn't recognize it, so I'm assuming it think it is a part of the internal phone memory. Is there a way to see how much space I have left on it at all?
- After rooting, I lost a few apps and have had to re-download them. However, there are some apps that I can't, primarily those from the Amazon AppStore. How do I retreive those?
- Is there some sort of back-up software I can use to prevent the loss of apps in the future?
- What ROMs does everyone recommend I get? I've been looking at CM7, but you guys would know better -- any suggestions? EDIT: I do fancy Sense, but I'd be more than willing to replace it if something came along that looks even remotely good. I'm not that attached to it.

Search for "Wireless Tether" the top result is the one ya want... Has most downloads.
Put sd card reader in computer and copy any files to puter, then format in fat32. Now put apps back on card and put in phone. Apps should be back and you should see it now.
Dont mess with roms myself....

Nils business sense z. Kernel built in will oc, very stable for me at 1.114 , also has wireless tether an wifi hotspot built in. Its a great rom.

Titanium Backup will backup and restore all user installed apps. To restore apps from the Amazon market, it should be as simple as installing it and then re-downloading the apps in "My Apps".
As for ROMs, I'm fond of MIUI which is based on CM7 (I believe) and influenced by iOS. It is AOSP, but has its own unique lockscreen and app management. I've been running it since Nov. 2010 so I can't help you out any further. MIUI also has built in usb tether and hotspot, but I've never messed with either. Might mention if you are a fan of Sense or not for others to comment.

From what Ive seen overclocking doesnt offer much for our phones, only in the range of about 150-200 MHz which isn't really noticeable, but if you wanna do it knock yourself out!
As for ROMs I'd suggest Incredibly Re-engineered.

Give carbonite fusion v.5 a try, been very reliable and stable, some Roms you will run into random reboots but I can't say its happened yet with this Rom, I liked the stock kernal in this Rom but I liked seeing the higher number so I use a ziggy kernal overclocked to 1.229.

I'll give a random testimonial. Check out warm z twopointtwo Nightlies......they're very stable and do not have any problems. The look and feel of the UI is revamped to reflect the look of Android 2.3 and it uses sense 2.0 which allows for dock theming and more customizability......it comes with ziggys kernel preinstalled which has a different scheduler which helps your phone run smoother and slightly faster......all in all a great Rom

In regards to Titanium Backup, you will need to d/l the app, and then buy the Pro version in the market. Costs a few bucks, but gives you access to all of the features. best part is that it puts the pro key on your SD card, so no matter what ROM you d/l, your first stop should be the market to re-d/l Titanium. it will see the pro key, and like that you can restore nearly every app. you backed up.
BTW, I'm a huge fan of Redemptive rEVOlution, killer ROM that is fast, stable, and gives great batt life.

I have a quick root noob question. If I get caught in a boot loop. When I go into recovery to upload a backup do I need to wipe data/cache/dalvik or just hit restore? If I restore I don't have to go through the setup process again do I?

Always a good idea to wipe when flashing nearly everything. When you restore a backup, you do not need to do the setup again, even if you wipe first. You will go back to EXACTLY the state it was in when you backed it up.

[Q] Restoring TB App Backups from ICS to GB

I posted this over at AndroidPassions, but I'll post here too because I'm hoping for a somewhat fast answer(I'd like to flash today)
I've been running the various ICS ROMs for a couple months now, but I'm going to be going out of town for a few days and need the stability and battery life of CM, so I'm going to be trying out the CM7.2 RC1 for the next couple days...
My questions is: Should I expect any issues restoring my titanium backups going from ICS to GB?
I don't think any of my apps are ICS-only (other than gapps and various system apps of course). That is to say, I know they all are at least available in GB. But, I don't know if perhaps when I downloaded them from the Market in GB it pulls an ICS-specific version that wont restore to GB.
Any thoughts?

I would just restore the apps and no data. If you can, limit what you restore to what's necessary for your trip that way if any issues arise there are less apps to sift through as the culprit. Without knowing what apps you use, my assumption is that primarily the Google apps have ICS versions and not too many if any non-Google apps do.
I had an opposite situation as you, I have a CM7 backup and tested AOKP for a week then restored to CM7 for a weekend trip.

Kernel question and a few other things...

So I'm pretty new, well very new, to the custom rom/kernel/recovery/etc game since my last phone was a POS and there was no point trying to make it do anything special, but ever since I got my S III, I've been trying to learn everything about how it all works. I have a Galaxy Tab and put a custom ROM on it a long time back, but I was never all that crazy about the latest and greatest till this phone came along. Considering it's my sole source of communication, I obviously need it to be functional, but there's a side of me that says it would be very hard to truly brick this phone (and please don't correct me if I'm wrong :cyclops: ) Anyway, I've played around with a few ROMs out there and am currently running the latest Crimson build which I love so far. I have a couple questions for those educated in all of this. First, and probably simplest, I've noticed that after flashing a new ROM and signing in to my Google account, apps I've acquired from the market sometimes download and install right away and sometimes don't. Is this just a somewhat-random phenomenon or is it within my control? I always use the same settings (sync automatically, keep this device backed up, etc) but they don't always have the same effect and I'm curious about it. Second, what do you guys recommend in the way of backing up apps? Not program-wise, but theory-wise...I make Nandroid backups whenever I make a major change and occasionally make individual app backups with ROM Toolbox Pro, but I use Nova launcher and it seems that a simple backup of my desktop layout is enough to get back my original look with the new ROM (and then I just let the apps download from the market). Is there an even better way to do this that I'm unaware of? I know that backing up apps has the added benefit of backing up data as well, but in my experience, restoring both app and data to a new ROM seems to have adverse effects...I inevitably have to uninstall and re-download the app. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but, again, I'm new to this. My last and most important question is regarding something I read about custom kernels only being usable with the UVALEM baseband. I don't know anything about phone modems but heard some people were getting better speeds with UVALH3 so I decided to flash it. This may have been a convenient coincidence but I'd never before observed speeds above 7-ish Mbps (my area has pretty lousy 4g coverage) and my first speed test gave me 12. I'm a little confused because everything has suggested custom kernels are NOT COMPATIBLE (always emphasized, too) with any other baseband yet I have an overclocked custom kernel with the aforementioned radio and have had no problems. Have I missed something or is something unusual happening? Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post!

1. As for apps downloading automatically from google; when you first set up your account again after flashing, there is an option asking you whether or not you want to back up and restore apps to google. If you check the restore option, it will download the apps that you already own that's been backed up. I usually just back up and restore my apps using TitaniumBackup so I always leave this option unchecked.
2. When I back up my apps using TiBa, I don't bother backing up the data. I just back up the apps, and then restore just the apps. All the apps data will have been saved and will be reloaded when you restore them. I've never used ROM Toolbox Pro so I can't say if it works the same with it.
3. People get different speed with the different radios. You just have to try the different radios and see which one works best for you.
4. I'm not really sure about the Kernel, but when I flash a radio, as long as it's OS and Carrier compatible, I just flash away. When I say OS compatible, I meant that I wouldn't flash JellyBean radio on a ICS ROM. Not sure if that would work, but I've never tried it. When I say carrier compatible, I wouldn't flash AT&T radio on T-Mobile phones.
