[Q] Compass for Arc? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
According to GSMArena and the Arc service menu, there is a compass within the Arc. However, there is no compass app or anything of that sort on the phone itself. Is the compass actually usable (like the iPhone 4 compass for example) or is it there for another reason entirely? My phone is on 4.0.2.A.0.42 stock, bootloader locked.

Download a compass app from the market mate.
Also, you can now easily root the .42 firmware with zergRush.

[Q] Are GPS and videorecording compatible ?

I found the strangle problem with my new HTC Desire HD: GPS lost satellites in the case of camera in the video recording mode.
First concern arose when using the device as a DVR: VideoReg, DailyRoads Voyager, AutoGuard. In all cases I have gps data loss.
As an experiment I ran the program gpstest and the original camera software - GPS have problems with the satellites when camera is recording video
What could it be ???
Factory firmware with OTA upgrade.
The GPS is only active when an app which uses the GPS is active. So if you switch to an app today does not use GPS, the function is turned off.

I understand it of course
DVR's are using GPS and camera by self, in the tests I used gps application in the background (navitel navigator and GPS status).
Oh I see. I don't know what's wronng. Never used any of the apps you mentionned above.
I am the developer of DailyRoads Voyager. There is quite a large number of users who run Voyager concurrently with navigation apps, without having problems with the GPS fix. But, not on the Desire HD
I have made some extensive changes in the code which handles GPS. Would any of you like to test this new version?
Thanks,
Robert
i would test if you send it to me?
just found it in the market and downloading it.
The version on the Android Market most likely has the same issues described above. The new version for test can be downloaded from here:http://dailyroads.com/voyager/test/4/dailyroads.apk
Please test for at least 2 minutes, because listening for GPS will be restarted after 30 seconds, and then again after 1 minute.
This version also creates a log file (DailyRoadsLog.txt) in the root folder of the
SD card. When you're done with the tests, please send this file to [email protected]
Thanks,
Robert
Did anybody resolve the issue? I have the same problem with my Inspire 4G. When the camera is active the GPS wont't fix. Once the camera is off the fix occurs immediately
hi, same problem (still) here. no programm works when it combines camera/GPS.
just installed DailyRoads Voyager and will try 'n' see if I can do the tests and send the doc. maybe it'll help.
PS contacted HTC a while ago, simple reaction "your GPS is working as wel las your camera. you don't have a problem then...." welll, discussing here is more than limited, even when sying tt both together don't work...
Hi, found via Robert (daily road travel ) found via russian forums the following : add an external b/t gps receiver, download a small app from the market which links the receiver to the phone and done !
Ok, it's a workaround but a working one !
Cheers

Has anyone found a better resolution??

Coming from Xperia X10a and have some questions

Hi all,
Just got a Galaxy S II X from Telus to replace my charging disabled X10a. I've got most things moved over, but I have some questions:
1. on the x10a, I was able to do voicedial over bluetooth, using the google dialer app, without a data connection (I have no data plan). Is this possible on the S II X, and how?
2. Loving the hi rez video, but noticing problems with focusing (no focus spot, nor option for infinity, etc.) and with shake reduction (inferior enough to x10a that I'm not sure its working) Are there fixes for this?
Still messing with stuff so I'm sure I'll find more.
Thanks!
Statik
you can turn on the auto focus and anti shake feature in the camera / record app settings
voice dialing, it can use either google voice dial or vlingo, but AFAIK both uses internet connection, they will probably still run even without the internet
just try it and find out
there's always an app for that in the market if those 2 can't do it off line
I've turned both on. I can see the focus trying but there doesn't seem to be a real focal point or a focal lock. In a large room with a person in the middle of the room, it hunts between mid focus and infinity.
I've tried both. Without internet neither works. This is disappointing as it worked fine on the x10 using the stock google voice dial.
Still investigating.
Thanks!

So, I found a nice, free, offline voice dialer for my phone that works over bluetooth. The only trouble is that Samsung have locked us into Vlingo from the voicedial headset command. I saw one thread that involved a fairly in depth rooting and mod scenario to change the dialer. Is there an easier solution to change just this one thing?
Thanks!

you can freeze it or uninstall vlingo with Titanium Backup, which requires root

[Q] Read NFC tags with screen off?

Is it possible?
It should read and wake the device, no?
As I understand the technology, this isn't possible with the screen completely off. It's a security feature that the secure element only turns on when the screen turns on. So it should be a hardware limitation not a software one.

the thing is, I can't seem to read with the screen on but no unlocked yet....
só its kinda boring having to turn it on, then unlock the read the tag...

It depends on the app. Some apps unlock it automatically like Google Wallet. So it depends on if the dev has added that feature.

My understanding is that the NFC service is disabled not the hardware and this could be changed with a custom ROM.
I've tried it both ways, screen off and screen on with Google Wallet and though it takes more time for it to open the app and prompt me for my PIN when I just pull it out of my pocket and tap it, it does seem to recognize the NFC tag (at the POS at least) even with screen off.
So I'd have to agree, I think it's up to the dev.
I'm hoping that one of the NFC devs sees this and can request one of the ROM developers to allow the NFC service to be active when the screen is off. I'd make this request myself over on the One X developer forum but I don't yet have the required 10 posts

Google Wallet doesn't unlock the device in ICS - it did in Gingerbread. It did this because the NFC Service and polling loop started when the device was awake, yet still locked. This changed in ICS.

It is the service being disabled.
http://grepcode.com/file/repository...4.0.1_r1/com/android/nfc/NfcService.java?av=h
See ApplyRouting where checks are explicitly made to see if the screen is unlocked before enabling. In theory the service could be modified and compiled into a custom rom to behave like Gingerbread (where it worked with the screen locked but on).
In Gingerbread ApplyRouting was maybeEnableDiscovery and the only check was mScreenOn

So, it's definitely possible to enable NFC with the screen on but still locked. But what about the OP's main question? Is it possible to keep the NFC service active 24/7 with some hackery?

Possibly I haven't looked at that part of the service, the code's all there though (assuming there isn't anything in the blobs preventing it).
how about read NFC tag in lock screen?

You'd need to modify the actual NFC service - so it would need to be part of a modified ROM.
I think that is not possible, "action" in NFC is kinda to emulate user activity..., I don't that that "user activity" can be done when screen off/locked...

when screen is off NFC stop working , except if you root the device it will not be possible to make it run when screen is off/locked
Evening gents,
I have a simmilar requirement for a project - to enable the NFC-read capability with the screen off / device locked.
I understand this is disabled as a security measure, to stop running instructions from external tags without user knowledge.
However, does this "lock" apply to simply reading a tag, and confirming the responce?
I read in various places that there is a "mod" to allow NFC with the screen locked.
Would this need to be done on a rooted phone?
My intention is completely legit - the final app would be installed from the Play store, with permissions required being accepted by the user etc as normal.
Could this "Read NFC with screen off" be authorised and enabled as part of the apk payload installation?
(FWIW, if this is possible, I would need to "ping" (run NFC search, read responce, confirm tag ID) every x-minutes).
THX
It should be possible to "override" the security feature of turning off the NFC reader when your screen is off through a custom, modified kernel. And to those who say that it's a hardware limitation, it's not. At least not on my phone, I used to have this before, on an older version of Android. Now I'm running a CM based rom, on Android 4.4.4, and it doesn't seem to detect NFC cards at all when the screen is off.
But I like it this way, so I'm not complaining.
Hi, in AOKP KK you can set the NFC Polling Mode to "screen off", "screen on locked" and "screen on unlocked (standard)"
Maybe look af github for the code.

[Q] Unlocking my House gate?

Hello, I live in an apartment complex and in order to get in the gate they use cards which im assuming are NFC you just tap it to the receiver the light lights up and bam opens the gate. I was wondering if there was any way possible to be able to tap my phone to the receiver and it will see the code to unlock the gate and im in. have beeen wondering about this for a while now. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
*EDIT* the key that is used is by SecuraKey and looks like they use RFID not NFC. If so would this still be possible?
follow this tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832499 they havent found the solution to do it yet but they need devs for help i hope they can get it working because i need it too
Unfortunately thiss app is not working with SGS3 with stock FW
Try downloading TagInfo from the Play Store, and then tap the card on your phone. If it shows up, then it could potentially work in the future.

Simple Solution for Xperia M GPS

Hi,
I was following another post about fixing the GPS issue of Sony Xperia M. I also have a C1904 which behaves as how other users reported about the GPS issues and possible fixes. I haven't follow actions suggested by another thread as it seemed to involve quite a few things.
Recently I found that the phone GPS is working fine at least for a couple of weeks. So I ponder what has been changed:
1. enabled developer options as I would like to enable mock locations to use Bluetooth GPS receiver.
2. enabled mock locations
3. installed Bluetooth GPS from Play Store.
4. rooted.
I think steps 4 might not be required. So if anyone can try the first two steps to give feedback on whether they get their GPS working more robustly.
I am happy to see this fixed in your phones.
Cheers.
After trying your Tipp (only enabling mock locations) for a few days now I think I can confirm this but have to test on in narrow streets and woods...

Thanks for testing yours. I think rooting is not needed as you say. So I think enabling mock locations and disabling network location are essential..
So checking this option on Xperia M will improve work of inbuild GPS? I must try it!
The real guide for xperia m gps issues:
go to ebay
buy external bluetooth gps reviver
pair with your phone
enjoy good working gps
the stamina mode
hi,
today I observed that if I turn off the stamina mode the gps works fine, and it was working properly wen charging because in this situation the stamina mode is turned off...
