ATTENTION: Samsung "games crashing" - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Anyone playing games on their Epic 4G Touch seem to have a common problem:
During intense gaming, the game either freezes or crashes returning you back to home screen. Everyone I know is experiencing this and yet we tend to ignore it for the love of our device, but this doesn't mean Samsung should pretend their $600 device is functioning as normal.
Dear XDA'er
If you are experiencing this problem, please post something here. Let's see how wide spread this problem truly is.
I for 1 am having problems playing "Galcon and Airport Mainia", since these are the only two games I play, I get frequent crash often. Post, post, post... I hope this thread grows to the attention of Samsung so that atleast they could acknowledge there is a problem!

There's already a starred issue, or what ever it is about it, and a thread here.

You got link?
Btw, more threads on this the better? I read a post and someone said they contacted Samsung but they refused the problem. Are you experiencing crash?

There is a code issue out, I couldn't find it. Maybe it was closed already. I remember seeing another thread about it with the link a few weeks ago, if I find it ill link it.

I thought it was just me. I figured it was the result of me screwing up a file when playing with things or a bug with the kernel I was using. Kind of wish it was....woulda been able to fix it then.

Here is a detailed explanation of what's going wrong:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284086
Here is another thread on the issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1283712
There are a ton of games that didn't give me this issue, but I've been having this problem on Robotek and Zenonia 3.

Read my posts. Only reason I dropped tmo and came over was this phone for gaming and my vibrant had none of these god damn.....just check my profile and read my posts. Pisses me off to no extent.

My Evo3D works just fine... This phone is on my nerves with crashes

I don't game a ton on my phone but I do like to game occasionally. This is just a rough estimate but I'd say half of the 20 or so games I've tried will crash on me within 20 minutes of playing. Out of the ones that crash about a quarter can be fixed by disabling some portion of the audio; either music, sf or both. The other quarter continue to crash in the same manner no matter what you do with the games audio.
Pretty big bug IMO, can't believe there's not more hype about it.

Slow XDA

Has anybody else noticed how slow the site has been the past 24 Hours? I originally thought it was my ISP doing something, but going to work today the site was still painfully slow! They are on a totally different ISP!
Anybody??
Yep, same here.
Here too. And sometimes i got just a message with 502 bad gateway.
XDA is slow aswell here. I've had the same thing with other forums aswell. I think it happens because we live in a foreign country... idk.
Anyway, it really prevents me from posting frequently...
Same here
Almost 4 min to load any page
Also sometimes bad gateway error 502
EDIT: Now ok again
Sllllllllllllloooooooooooooooowwwwwwwww......!
Very slow here, too.
Took over a minute to load the reply to thread page.
yep!
And sometimes my replys are duplicated, i have saw many duplicated posts this day!
Its on maintenance? i couldnt go to the home page
same thing here
yea i got the same messages with the bad gateway as well as super slow load times. im in the states so it cant be that u guys r over sea's. maybe its the servers. i wonder if any mods know
I´m sure they are aware, Mods and Admin are always keeping an eye here
By the way now it´s working ok, and let´s remember that if something around 5000 users or more are online at the same time, server starts to go slow.
YEP!
everything is fine now... we have XDA devs for more to go!!
I really hope someone is able to fix this.
extreme slowness
bad gateways errors
duplicate posts
Taking a forced coffee break after each page-refresh ain't that good for me
Yep, same here. Very slow!
Yes, its awesomely slow.
Hope its beeing worked on 'cause its unusable at times.
Same problems here...
Russia, Moscow.
XDA are ve-e-ery slow! Already few days. Many times I see "502 Bad gateway", more than few minutes required for loading page and posting answer and many times posted answers are duplicated!
does xda need some new servers? what is xda running on?

Mods were aware, although Mods can't do much about the hardware system. I checked with Admin and indeed they were also aware of the situation. I know a short while back they were working on load balancing across the servers.

Yes thinking about it, every page takes ages to load and has for a few days. Servers have too much to cope with. Is there going to be any upgrade of servers ? The BIG positive is how much in demand this site is. Top work !

Sometimes the lock screen randomly comes on and the screen shuts off when I watch netflix. Could be the same thing.
with netflix i have no problems!!! hmmm...
I can confirm it happens with a few of my games. Gameboid (GBA emulator) does this. Where I'll be playing for a few seconds and it'll just close on me. As for n64oid, I can play it for ages and it not crash.
I think most people who play games on this phone have the issue. It may not happen on every game but I called Samsung and they have nothing documented on the problem which means there will be no fix because they dont know about it. Everyone should take 5-10 minutes to call customer support. 888-987-help. They wont fix the issue over the phone because they cant but if more people call maybe it will raise some eyebrows. They will ask you to factory reset, just tell them you already did it. They will ask you to send the phone in, tell them you just want the issue documented and escalated.

It happens to me while playing Nova 2 online multiplayer. I use the kick stand case ( which is quality I must say ) for normal use but when I play the game ( several trail runs performed ) I have to remove it due to heat. Rather this is true or not, my opinion for the shutoff is over heating. Plays like a charm in a cool environment with no case.
Just my 2 cents.

Found this post on Sprint forums.
We all have the same problem. Rather or not you've seen doesn't mean that you don't have it. It does related to Soundpool. I understand that now. I also understand that this problem existed in the internation SGSII phones and Samsung has not released a update to fix it yet. Maybe they will later? I don't know. This problem is very old now and Samsung is giving it little attention.
I can reproduce it so easily now that I could show anyone that wants to see it. I know how it happens and a little bit of why it happens. What I don't know is how to stop it from happening. I'm tech savvy but there is limitations to my knowledge. I can't copy over the lighting rom 6.X to work with our CDMA phone and get a decent fix. It could be months before this issue is corrected.
This problem doesn't affect all games. Just a lot of games because it deals with the Soundpool. There are gameloft games that can be played without this problem ever showing up and some of those games have decent graphics. But then other gameloft games have this problem. Developers would have to completely rewrite their games to be compability with our device. That isn't going to happen anytime soon, nor is it really fair to the developer. It takes a lot of work and lot of creativity to create these games we enjoy so much. It would suck to have to attempt to redo because Samsung can't seem to get rid of their software issues.
This problem exsists on ASP roms so no solution there either.

That is pretty much what I confirmed. We have to change the way the soundpool works or we aren't going to get this solved.
It isn't hard to make this bug appear. It has nothing to do with time played in my experience. I can easily reproduce this issue on few games.
Counting on devs for this? shameful samsung

It isn't related to the heat. It deals with how many enemies are close to you and has nothing to do with time played or heat in dungeon defenders. Make it to the third wave and stand in front of the middle door that has the most mobs coming out and it will crash everytime.

There's a post and another forum saying it's linked to sound board issue!! But Samsung has done nothing to resolve it

Galaxy Nexus - flawed by bad NAND!!! \data partition corruption issue

Issue: \data partititon become corrupt for no obvious reason.
Manifests itself through: Freezes followed eventually by (endless) reboots
When: Randomly when you install new apps (may be every day as it can happen only every other week/month), or setting up apps (like Twitter, mail, etc)
Temporary solution: Re-flash Samsung FW but lose ALL YOUR DATA. Attention: CWM restore will not fix the problem!
---- Here goes a link to the fabulous mskip's tutorial, you will find here everything you need to get it back up temporarily
I experienced this in 401, 402, 403 and 404, some were expecting better data integrity in 404... I confirm this is not the case
I would not go as far as saying that this is 100% the reason, but it looks like the NAND quality is craaaaaap! There is no external SD card, Android should be able to do a perfect job now at handling info and preserving quality of data.
I will contact Samsung and ask for a refund (if at all possible)... Disgusting thing to put such a piece of s''t on the market without proper testing and call it "flagship/pure Google experience". This is not an isolated issue, it happens to at least half of the people around and the others may have not seen it yet (it all depends on how often you manipulate data on the phone)...
Any advice, I am inetersted, have tried pretty much everything so far and did not solve the problem...

Your first post came across as a hysterical rant - this is the first I've heard of the problem so it's not affecting many phones, and ultimately Samsung are going to have the occasional dodgy NAND chip. Sounds like you got one.
If you'd had several phones and they'd all exhibited this problem you'd be right to be peeved, but it simply sounds like you've been unlucky and are pissed off about it. Have you even discussed it with Samsung's tech support or taken it back to the shop you bought it from?
And accusing an XDA recognised developer of trolling is not a great start to your time here.
I've not heard of other people having this problem with the Gnex? Who are these other people having this same problem? Maybe speak with them and see if a replacement phone might solve the problem. I really hope you can get this fixed and not give up on such a great platform.

Respect for your dev background (haven't used any of your ROMs yet), in all fairness I'm far less impressed with your communication skills... I must agree though, my message may have come across as too abrupt and you're right again, I am going to sort it out with Samsung...
Did not mean to get people horrified, rather to blow the whistle on a worrying and annoying bug and smth people may consider if they come across or consider a purchase.
For having worked in the mobile comm semiconductors space for years, I know just what sets apart a serious company from a me-too profile. Surprised to see Samsung having this king of issues. Normally they are ironed out easily though SW regression tests and HW stress processes (at least at serious OEMs).
I will let one of the moderators judge if my crime is so serious, your ego will survive, I'm sure I will come back when/if issue solved (or in good progress).
yeah, mine is fine. If it was a widespread problem I would back your corner, but I seems rather isolated. Rather then cause mass hysteria I would say you need to return your handset
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
This happened to mine. But only once.
Quite frustrating, as my phone is my alarm clock and it was bootlooping when I needed to go to sleep!
However, a reflash of the 4.0.2 stock images sorted it out, and no problems since. I'm pretty sure I caused it by pulling out the battery at some sensitive point in a reboot or something.
If this happens to you frequently, then you need to exchange your phone.
Also, I think this could be a pretty good resource as opposed to a rant if you put your mind to it. I'm not a developer, but I'm also not a total n00b, and it took me a little while to figure out how to fix the problem, when I had it. I'm sure there are people out there who would appreciate a guide.
In this thread, op is going through that time of the month, when was his own modification back fires in his face, his explosive emotions reek havoc on an online forum.
If you want to see a device with bad nand memory, see the HTC Desire S forum .
Also the reboots and freezes I used to experience on my device were application related. Device hasn't frozen, nor rebooted in about *looks at up time* .. 27 days .

... I was actually referring to a poll in another thread (link in this thread) concluding that half of the people who answered have experienced freezes and reboots... it may be biased somewhat by the fact that people who experienced the issue are more likely to vote than those who didn't... maybe an overstatement from me.
Get the odd reboot (Chrome seems to provoke, strangely) but zero data corruption in 3+ months of heavy use. (4.0.3 AOKP)
Sorry, no endemic fault that I can see here (from reading these forums) and if I were you I'd be looking for a warranty replacement. Refund will depend on your location and supplier and duration of ownership.

First I heard about this too. I've flashed tons of roms and mods and constantly installing uninstalling apps.
The GNex has been anything but non-stable. I think I've had to pull the battery once or twice since ownership. Never heard anyone complain about randomly losing all their data... especially not daily. Perhaps on a bad flash in CWM.
Maybe you should look into a super wipe that completely erases everything, deletes the partition tables and recreates everything from scratch. Maybe it'll help but it honestly sounds defective.

Thanks Player911... Interesting idea, was thinking as well to do a total wipe and sort of a sector-by-sector reformat, but could not find a way of doing it. Is there any tool that would allow me to do it? Maybe this will isolate bad sectors...
Will check shortly with Samsung folks, thanks mate! (what slows me down is the fact that I'm currently travelling to the US and the guarantee is only European and it's Sunday= hotline is closed in Europe).

Does the new update (JSS15Q) fix the reboot issue?

Guess a single falsification of this expectation will do.
I have horrible spontaneous reboots on my N7 2013. Really hope the update will fix this. I monitored a lot of update threads but didn't find a confirmation (or falsification) yet that this issue is solved.
Reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380866&page=32 it might not fix the issue but the update isn't widespread enough yet for people to check. More reports will probably be here.

Just kidding.
I think they have two types of random reboots. One is software related which will eventually get fixed. Another is hardware related, which may never get fixed and will be left to the RMA process to resolve.
Doubting that would ever have been a possibility...
Fact is that a poster or 2 said basically, statistically, 123 out of the however many thousands were sold is little more than statistical noise.
I agree. I also see many more people posting here with varying degrees of issues, but all boiling down to the 3 issues : freezing, rebooting, GPS.
Maybe increasing the numbers will bring the statistics to a more accurate number.
It's almost 3 days, and I still haven't had the update pushed to mine yet.

It is silly to take 123 as an absolute # and say it is noise. You need to compare relative to other issues for the same user base to get a weighted #
Obviously many more than 123 are having the issue and obviously many people aren't.
If you sell 1m units and 10‰ have issues you still have 900k users with no issues wondering what you are complaining about. However 10% is actually a pretty high defect rate and can easily erase margins and erode your brand.
The question is not who is screaming the loudest, but whether your problem is a 1%, 10%, 20%, etc problem. I suggest you judge your problem relative to how many people complained about the GPS and multi-touch issues.
erratic touchscreen
216 authors
GPS searching
222 authors
Random freeze and restart
127 authors
So if you take GPS as the biggest issue by number of unique users
erratic touchscreen is being reported by about 97% of GPS levels
and random reboots is being reported by about 57% of GPS levels
We know Google addressed multi-touch and GPS issues and have asked for bugreports for random reboots so I'm sure it is on their radar. It probably is just a more complex problem to solve than updating drivers.
Any other issue being reported is just noise compared to these big 3. Other issues are probably at 1-10% of GPS levels.
I am running the 15Q update for past 30 hours and have had 2 random reboots about 16 hours apart. The first I was trying to. Test the GPS issues as I lost lock and GPS TEST was not seeing any satellites. The second I was reading an article in Feedly.

It must be on their radar. A random reboot is the most horrible thing that can happen to a user. Especially when it happens when you are writing that long, well thought mail to your boss asking for a salary raise.
I'm sure they received a lot of complaints about this from frustrated users.
Because of the severity of the problem and the number of people affected by this (not only xda members) it really makes me wonder why the don't respond to it with a statement. Then again, I agree, the problem can be very complex. A pain in the ass for Google also.
before i returned my nexus 7, the random reboot was always while pandora was trying to change songs. at the worst it was rebooting as many as 4 times in a 10 minute drive, making it a terrible device for a car stereo replacement combined with the gps issues.... glad the gps is resolved but i'm waiting for the reboots to be addressed before i give the tablet another try.

ATP their radar must be on fire, but, no, no response addressing the rebooting other than having the effected send logs.
In my case it only happened while it was asleep, and I'd only know it as the expected background apps weren't there, prompting me to check the up time.
I'm suspecting a lot of finger pointing between Google and ASUS going on in the background.
Either way, no help for those of us past our return window.
Only advice I can give is to return/exchange any device with the freezing, rebooting, touch or GPS issues while you can.
There are 'good' units out there if you want to take the time to find them.
Otherwise, keep an eye here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/mobile/mG4JXaT-SHs/doD54oeEJrUJ to see how Google/ASUS is handling it.
Consumer Reports also had issues with their test unit:

Possible recent apps lag fix.

One thing I noticed with my phone that was laggy was the recent apps button. I fixed it by running art in developers option. Let it restart and let it do its android is upgrading apps. Once it does that let it boot up. Go back to developers option and change back to dalvic. Then it will restart and boot up again. After that check your recent apps button to see if it's quicker with no delay. Worked for me so let me know if it works for you.

No change for me after doing that.

work for me
I only have about a half second delay from hitting the button until it shows up on screen. Is that really a problem? Lmao

It has been repeatedly posted by different users and on the other note forums as an issue for some. There's a post sonewhere on this forum claiming Samsung acknowledged the delay. A 1-2 second delay is annoying and unnecessary on a new flagship phone. Regardless it worked for me.

Don't have a delay anymore after doing this.

I noticed this when I switched back to dalvic so that I can access my private mode files (doesnt work on art!). My device was faster overall on art and I can't wait for android L so I can use art exclusively.

Yes, I was agreeing with you. Tried it and while the recent button was even faster on art, switching back to dalvic has definitely made a difference for me. Thank you for the tip.

Well, I'm glad it worked for you. Seriously.
Honestly though, if anyone is legitimately annoyed over a second or two delay, then your lives must be perfect in every other conceivable way. Sure, it's 2014, and I get it, but c'mon. A 1-2 second delay is nothing.
Took like 25 mins to change over to ART but this worked for me, thanks. The delay was annoying even in my far from perfect life.
I tried this and didn't see much difference between ART and dalvik. There was a lot more lag on ART for me and the recent apps still had a delay.

Did nothing for me but worth a try
While I currently only have about a 1/2 second delay, I wonder if it will slowly creep back to being slow over time.
Also, how does it calculate what is recent? Is it a set time period or just a list of the last X apps used?
Likely last used. That's what it seems anyway

I have the Canadian rogers version and those steps did not work for me. Cannot wait for Android L update come Sammy push the update.
I have not had any lag with this button since the day I got it. A friend of mine who is on Sprint has a delay. Annoying? Yeah maybe a little but if your schedule is so tight that a 1 second delay is going to cause mass chaos, you really need to look at your schedule and your priorities.

too bad there's no smiley for rolling my eyes... when someone upgrades to a new phone, you'd expect it to be faster. 1-2s isn't that bad "in the grand scheme" as you and a couple others illogically point out. the difference is pressing this button more than 10-20x a day, it starts to make you wonder what's wrong with this phone.
lastly, it's sad that you felt compelled to come into a thread and throw your judgement around on other people's lives. i could say i feel sorry for you that your life is so slow and lackadaisical that you're able to easy tolerate delays throughout your day. but i wouldn't do that.
onwards and upwards on your slow climb to nowhere :highfive:

AGREED. I was searching for this exact problem when I found this thread. I only bought a Note 4 because I broke my Note 2, my thoughts were 'Well, I guess i'll have a faster phone?' even If its 700$... imagine my dismay to find the phone SLOWER than my previous one. my life is far from perfect, which is why spending an extra 400-500 for a note 4 over a note 2 means I expect speed. and you know this, maaaaaaaaan.
After disabling multi window the lag is almost gone. I think the lag is due to figuring out wich of the recent apps suport multi window. it's definitely a software optimisation issue as the galaxy s6 doesn't have this problem and it also supports multi window. I don't know if it is as complex as the multi window of the note 4. Try it and tell me if this helped. Sorry if this has already been posted, but honestly I didn't read all the posts in this thread
art question
Where is the art setting in developers mode? I looked over every button and can't find it.
