Thanks but none of those links really answer the questions.
Put another way, if I want to unlock the bootloader, can this only be done on unbranded handesets, or does it work on network provided handsets too?
What questions should I be asking the seller, to ensure I get a handset that I can unlock the bootloader and load a rooted ROM if I wish.
I don't want to buy a phone that I can't root.....

All clearly answered by the content you were linked to, and the two stickys in General which I suggest you read.

I have read them all, and really none the wiser. Does it really matter if I buy a unlocked network Arc S, rather than a true SIM-FREE one? Is there anything I won't be able to do with the former that I can do with the latter?

Any can be unlocked, but network locked requires SETool, SimFree just needs S.E's method. My phone came network locked from O2 but is now Debranded, Boot and Sim Unlocked. The Debranding I did myself and Alejandrissimo Unlocked my BL and Sim.

Thanks. So is it worth the hassle, I can get a SIMFREE from Play.com for £339 or a network unlocked S for £50 less. (I can get some cashback from play.com, making it closer to £30 difference).
Is it worth paying £30 more to get a true SIMFREE phone, and avoid the risk of bricking it, and i'm guessing benefiting from quicker updates.

You can unlock your bootloader, but you have to pay
thankx for reply
2 questions
how much?
how to?
There is no need to pay. Simply use this guide to unlock your bootloader for free.
I have an R800i and did it myself. Just make certain that you install Gordon's Gate drivers on your PC otherwise you'll be left with a phone you can not reflash afterwards.
what using Omnius for SE v0.23 ?

That only works for phones which are not sim locked (subsidized) by a carrier. For all those that do have sim locked phones, such as myself, you do indeed need to pay to get it unlocked by someone that has the tools to do so remotely. You can find someone in the General forum that can do it for you.

I was under the impression the R800i always came sim unlocked. Mine did. My mistake. Thank you for the information.
Had mine unlocked yesterday wicked..

My phone was sim locked to UK orange, too. I paid alejandrisimo just under 20 quid and he enabled fastboot, unlocked the bootloader and removed sim lock in about 5 mins. All remotely. Thread was in the general section.

do you by chance have a link to it?
and also, i need to unlock it so i can use it on a different carrier
thanks
its stickied at this section. the top thread.
easiest and cheapest way to unlock is to use omnius but this will also unlock your bootloader but it can always be locked again.
here is link to the guide about arc

Not much to do except themeing and rooting at the moment for a stable phone.
My suggestion is to just use it as it is because the battery life is awesome with stock ROM. I had timescape and other junk uninstalled.
There is not as much development going on for arc as for the x10 at the moment.

If you can unlock the bootloader then you should look at installed doomlords kernel... allows you to overclock the CPU.. amongst other things!
thanks everyone for your help
i really appreciate it
i followed the namaste tutorial and now have a rooted arc with 3.0.A.2.181 generic firmware
my next question and probably most important one
how do i unlock the phone to use on a different carrier?
when i insert my sim from other carrier it asks for SIM unlock code? do i have to call them to get this?
thanks again
No mate, you must buy an unlock code from a trusted website.
I highly doubt the carriers will give you an unlock code.
any recommendations for a site to get the unlock code?
Not sure why you bought a brand new locked phone to a carrier you don't use? How strange. Anyway, your carrier should sell you an unlock code. In the UK this is usually GBP15.
I would also avoid fiddling too much with custom firmware - what little exists is very early in development and rather rough. The stock SE firmware is actually very good.
The most I would do if you want to debrand is to flash a generic stock SE ROM and then actually use your phone and enjoy it.
thanks alot
i did flash it with generic rom. so thats good to go
i still dont know why i rooted it because i dont see a use for it so far... will have to wait and see
any experience with Cellunlocker.net?
Yes - I used them. I got the code in the end but it took ages - maybe it will be different now. It was expensive though. Doesn't Omnius-Server unlock phones and you get the bootloader unlocked at the same time - its way cheaper than cellunlocker too.
for unlocking a sim-locked arc in the most cost efficient way and helping the community, contact Blagus for his service.

not sure why its blocked but just contact him directly here in xda-forums.
"sim unlock" allows your phone to use any networks and not just where your phone was subsidized from. means can use any sim card and network worldwide. of course if you will just stick to your current provider and not intend to go to other country and use the sims there, maybe you will not need sim unlock. also, a sim unlocked phone has more value in terms of resale.
"bootloader unlock" allows your phone to be programmed to use other software or system which is either a modified form of software from Sony Ericssson (often with enhancement) or even a whole new system for the phone which makes it look and work differently from the original. it is for more technically expert users.
For me, i am ok with Sony Ericsson stock, but I do appreciate the bootloader unlock as it allows me to flash doomlord's kernel makes downclock phone max speed possible to save battery life. it also gives root access already which offers full control of the programs running in the phone.
For your requirement, sim unlock is enough. But I believe Blagus solution when done, does already a sim unlock AND enables the phone to be bootloader unlocked. Note that it just "enables unlocking", its still choice to have it remained in locked state. Because sim locked phones have locked bootloaders and cannot be unlocked using the Sony Ericsson publicly provided procedures.

[Q] Unlocking bootloader

Hey, well basicly I've just brought an Xperia Play. I had to ring up Orange UK after I brought it, I was told it was a generic network unlocked phone so I was thinking oh great I can actually get the bootloader unlocked easy! but it turned out it was actualy locked to Orange UK (Brought the phone on Ebay was meant to be unlocked) but I went into the service menu & bootloader unlock wasn't allowed, I've seen SeTool is a great tool for unlocking Sim-locked devices, but from what I've seen with buying the credits & the program it's pretty expensive, is there any other way of unlocking the bootloader? I can't boot into fastboot with the blue LED I've tried the official way too unlock, I've tried flashing generic firmware using FlashTool non of that has worked. Can anyone help me out what so ever? Thanks Jay.

Contact this guy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232050 He unlocked mine remotely (and many other's); it's costs around £15 and takes about 15 minutes. Make sure you have a paper clip handy and do a bit of research before hand (download the apps needed etc)
Thanks for the reply man! Anwser I've been looking for, I'll definatly concider that. Sounds a good real good deal.

Yea it all worked fine for me, hence why I'm happy to recommend that guy. The method he uses is remotely running SETool via networked USB drivers, so if you've already looked into that you'll understand why it's around £15 (he has to buy the credits)

does fantastic work. same stuff. now the fota is fixed too so you may do updates OTA with your bootloader unlocked. OTA used to brick the play and arc when their bootloaders were unlocked, since been fixed and Alejandrissimo applied the fix for free, as i had just unlocked my second SE device a few days before this fix. lol

Non-Unlockable bootloader + Fastboot?

Hey guys,
I know that some phones bootloader cant be unlocked. I checked mine and of course mine couldnt be unlocked.
My phone is locked to Vodafone and for the love of god I would like to use CM10 on my Xperia Arc S.
Two questions.
1. Is there no possible way to unlock my bootloader?
I mean Sony does officially support unlocked bootloaders. I requested a unlock key and they sent it to me. (I read about having to call your carrier and getting a code of them which can cost up to 50€ or so?)
2. (This is just to make sure that im not failing at a simple task) You can´t Fastboot with "non-unlockable" bootloader correct?
If anyone knows how to install CM10 on a locked bootloader or how to unlock the bootloader with out having to a pay a ridiculous 50€ I would really appreciate it.
I mean I simply can not understand why I should not be allowed/able to unlock my bootloader on MY phone. Its like as if I buy a house and im not allowed to unlock the front door...
Thanks!

Yes, click the first link in my sig, which is a sticky in the general section which I wish People would visit instead of coming to Q&A to ask for answer that can be found in the stickys.
Thanks for the reply but I have read that post and I am a little unclear on something.
Primarily this:
There are three ways to Unlock yours, the Standard/Official method (For SimFree/Un-Branded Phones) which is explained HERE, (PLEASE NOTE! - You loose DRM when using the official method but not with the TestPoint) but if your Phone came from a Carrier then chances are (99%) you won't be able to use that method. There is a simple method of checking if you can or not which you'll find HERE.

Do you mean that the 2 ways under that quote are for people with locked sims or do you mean its generally not possible?
Sorry for the stupid question but id rather be safe than sorry.
Unlocking bootloader has nothing to do with locked SIMs.

You need to use the third method as the first two are for SIM-Free, unbranded Phones.
Hmm seems like the only way it could be unlocked is if I pay for it.
Thats lame.
Thanks anyway.

No. It depends where the phone comes from. If it's from a carrier, it is probably with a locked bootloader. If you buy it from lets say amazon at full price which the phone is already SIM unlocked, it will probably be with a unlockable BL.

I also went to my Sony store and they only had the one branded by Rogers so I guess you better make sure its factory before you purchase it becoz at the moment, theres no way to unlock a BL that is set to NO. ....But maybe someone will come up with an exploit in the near future.
