[Q] Battery not charging correctly/overheating? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Phone is effed up. Not really sure what happened, but the battery won't charge when I plug it into the AC while the phone is turned on.
The back of the phone gets realllllly hot. Then an error comes up and says "charging stopped due to high temp" or something along those lines.
So essentially, the only way I can charge this phone is if I turn it off and plug it in.
Any ideas what could have caused this? It charges fine when it's plugged in and turned off.
--I'm rooted, but still running stock ROM.

Unroot and take it back. Sounds defective. I think its what mosrmt would do

pull the battery, let it sit for about 5 minutes, then put it back in and restart..
if it happens again, then take the phone back for exchange..

Yeah, it's still happening. Guess I'm going to take it in.
Does anyone know if they're looking at the counter? I rooted but unrooted, so they won't see that, but I'm worried about the binary counter.
Also, has anyone else experienced this problem?

I might have killed my Battery (FIXED...for now)

Hey Guys,
I am running the Cell Pro 9.5 ROM and since yesterday my phone doesnt turn on.
So this is what happened, I never got a chance to recharge my phone yesterday and so I used it to the very last bit of juice. The phone kept switching itself off with the critical level battery warning and I kept turning it back on. So it got to a point where it wasn't switching on at all. So I pluged in the phone to the computer to charge and left it there for approximately an hour (the orange charging light was on), came back and tried to switch the phone back on and it didnt respond at all. Took out the battery, tried the soft reset button etc and everything else I thought of with no luck. So I plugged it back on and suddently it turned back on, did the boot up, loaded the touchflo and I saw the battery level was at "0" and then suddenly it turned of with a "tuck" sound (similar to a PC when you hold down the power button or turn the power off without shutting down). This has been repeating since then, I have left it plugged in and every 5-10 minutes or so the phone switches on by itself and shows the boot screen, go all the way till HTC animation and powers off suddenly. I have had no luck in turning the phone back on, I dont what is causing the issue - wether its the battery or the phone.
Please give me your thoughts....I am completely lost without my phone...
- issue was that the phone kept restarting as soon as the battery stored enough charge for a reboot. I pulled out the battery at one of the restart cycle as advised below and stopped it from repeating it. After that the phone let the battery charge without a restart, did not mess with it for a long while.
Never let the battery drain all the way down to 0%. Not sure if it affects the battery, but it sure will give you enough hassle that you wont repeat it.

The same thing happened to me last night... but mine works now. what I thought it was is that it kept turning on as soon as it had enough battery to do so then it would die and repeat... So every time it would turn on
I would take the battery out and let it charge some more and then when it quit turning back on I left it overnight and now its on...

Ok....I will try that and report back....
Sorry you pull the battery then the cord then put the battery back in then cord. Also it will take a lot longer if you charge it on the computer.
Never mind mine quit working again...

I managed to get it charging after pulling out the battery and putting it back again. Charged it through a computer cause i dont have my charger with me.
I turned it on and the battery said 40% and now every second or so it is dropping by 1%. I can literally watch it dropping down sitting here. The phone doesnt want to charge when it is on. I plug in the usb and the LED turns orange and then turns off. Now the battery is at 25%, This is litterally in about a minute or less. I dont know whats wrong, is it the Battery?
I had this exact same thing happen to me twice on previous HTC hardware (wizard). The first time I couldn't save it and just had to buy a new battery. However, the second time it happened I was able to resurrect it once I got it plugged into a higher-current charging source, like the wall charger it came with, or even most car chargers (that's how I saved it when I couldn't get to my wall charger). I had to let it sit on there for about an hour before it held enough charge to stay on, and another 2 hours before it was fully charged, but it worked just fine after that.
You battery may indeed be toast from what you describe. I have had the experience of totally discharging the battery and the device not coming on at all. I recommend that if you do this, you should fully charge it using the wall charger NOT the computer (if the computer works at all. it didnt in my case). I have done this a few times now and the battery turned out fine each time.

Thanks.....
My issue seamed to be fixed. I had to rely on a computer as I didnt have access to my charger and by the time I did my phone was at approximately 65% charge. I plugged it in and charged it all the way to 100%. Replugged it and left it for a little more while to make sure it got charged completely. I have been using it since today morning 9am and now it is 2pm at 73% after couple of calls, messages and emails.
Few more charging cycles with the wall charger and I am hoping it will be back to normal.

does anyone know where i can get a new motherboard?
i voided the warranty by doing the spring mod
or new screws with void stickers.
It's possible the battery is having problems, i doubt it though, it seems as though youve hard bricked your phone.
does anyone know where i can get the motherboard or better
OEM htc g2 screws with void stickers?

By the looks of things, any number of factors could be contributing to your Desires errors. However, it does seem like you've messed up the partitioning on the Desire Z internal memory and its giving you errors for it.
Try these steps.
1. Take the battery out and plug in your charger.
If the light doesnt come up try plugging your USB cable into your PC to charge.
If the light still doesn't come up your Desire Z is gone.
However, if the light does eventually come on, go to 2.
2. If any light comes up, then try turning it on.
If the screen turns on and you see ANYTHING besides black thats GOOD. go to 3
If the screen doesn't turn on there may be a motherboard issue.
3. Now if you can get it to turn on and not show black you should try this:
3a. Plug it into your PC then from there hold VOL DOWN and then navigate your way to Fastboot. It should say FASTBOOT USB or something like that.
3b. Flash a stable ROM onto your phone via your PC by going into recovery, mounting as storage then copying a ROM over. Then just flash the ROM onto your Desire Z and it should be fine.
If all this fails you should send it to a repair shop. There's no way you would get warranty to fix it at this point.
so ok i managed to get mini usb cable
When i conntected my phone to charger last night the orange battery light came on.
but nothing else.
when i clicked voulme down button then connected it to my computer it vibrated 5 times then green light came on.
And on my computer it showed up as Qualcom CDMA technologies MSM.
im searching everywhere to see if i can fix it. at this point any help would be appreciated.
I did notice that even though the phone wasnt turning on the phone was getting hot? (it wasnt connected to the charger obviously.)
when i did battery pull and leave it out it cools down. when i put it back in and turn it back on it gets hot after a while even though the screen and everything does not turn on.
Do this:
Pop out the battery and leave it for maybe 1 minute.
Then put the battery back in and see if the phone gets hot. If the phone does get hot skip passed 3 and 4.
Now assuming the phone doesn't get hot, plug it into your charger for about 5 minutes before turning the phone on. Try and get into Fastboot/Bootloader.
Once in your bootloader, just navigate your way to recovery and flash a new rom.
If the phone/battery gets hot it means its turned itself on as soon as the battery has gone and the phone isn't displaying anything. You should try just plugging the phone into the charger and turning it on. See if you get anything up on the screen. If you do then just jump into recovery and flash a rom.
Otherwise, if the screen always stays black regardless of what you do, send it in for repairs.

yea it stays black no matter what i do,, but it does get hot though.
Farout.. you should really send it to a repair shop then. The reason why is because you can't do anything to the device without the screen on. You can try and hope for it to boot into HBOOT but you would have better luck sending it off on Warranty or to a phone repairs place.

yae the replacement is already on their way
Haha thats brilliant. Don't brick this one lol.

Won't stay on when plugged in via USB

My Harrier (Sprint PPC6600) will no longer stay on when plugged in. It has the original PPC2003.
I used to be able to use it as a nice desk clock using SPBTime and sitting it on its dock. It would always stay on, and has the checkbox checked to always stay on when plugged in. It has been fine for years. Now, it shuts completely off after awhile. If I turn it back on, it still turns itself off when left alone. The only way to fix this is a factory reset, which only works for about 2-days before it shuts itself off and will no longer stay on.
Any ideas what might cause this and how to fix it?
The battery holds a charge, so it doesn't seem like degraded battery life is causing it (I wouldn't think battery life is a factory when it's plugged in anyway).
Can we have this?
Not sure I understand, are you asking me to give you my phone?
Support for you!

shut down phone, now won't reboot

i just shut down my phone to reboot into recovery and now it wont boot and when i plug in the charger i dont even get a charge light. everything was working fine before this, and now im just at a loss.
edit: ok. it just booted back up. i have no idea what was going on. i plugged into my computer and tried down and power. nothing happened, looked away, looked back orange light was on, pushed power nad it booted. wierd.
edit 3. ok took me a few tries to get into recovery.
has anyone ever had it shut down and just not be able to boot back up right away?

This happened to me once. I freaked out too but just let it charge and came back and then it was on lol
What's weird is I was at a 80% charge. I left phone unplugged all weekend to see how long it would last. I got to like 2 days 6 hours so I charged at work on a non HTC charger.
Reading around seems like some other ones are doing this too. Hopefully it was a one time deal.
Yea I've kinda realized that. I wish HTC sold extra chargers. My nephew has destroyed my old incredible cable. No other micro cables fit like the HTC ones.
This happened to me when the battery failed on my One. The amber charging light is tough to tell apart from the red overheating/failure light. When I powered my phone down to cool it off, it never came back.

Tab S 707A will not boot.

I rooted this for a friend a few weeks ago, it was all good and working for a while, but now it wont boot. Not sure exactly wha the deal is. When a charging cable is plugged in, it just shows a battery, but doesn't seem to be charging. Does anyone have any idea what the hell happened and how to fix it?
Figured this out. Took the back off and unplugged the battery for about 30 seconds, plugged it back in. Booted right up.
