Rooting the Samsung Galaxy running 2.2 (froyo), use my nice and simple guide below.
1. Check that – Settings > About Phone > USB Settings > Mass Storage is selected
2. Plug the phone into USB – make sure you have the drivers already installed from Samsung of course!
3. The phone will tell you its plugged in – click “Turn on USB storage”
4. Download this update.zip file (attached)
5. Copy the file to the root directory of your Galaxy S sd Card.
6. Power off the phone and unplug from USB
7. Boot the phone into recovery mode – press and hold vol down and the home button and tap the power button to turn the phone on. Keep vol UP and home held until the phone starts to boot into the recovery mode – it will be noticeably different! Might take a couple of attempts.
8. Once in recovery mode, use the vol down key to highlight “apply sdcard: update.zip“, press the home button to apply
9. Phone should do its thing and reboot
You’ll know it has worked if you go into the applications menu and can see “Superuser Permission”.
This is for the I900 but works for the Cellular South Showcase SCH-i500.
Props to "hamlesh" for this tutorial. I can't link websites yet, but givin' credit where credit's due.
Doesnt work.
Every thing works until i select APPLY SDCARD: UPDATE.ZIP. It says no such file or directory.

Suppose I do this ^^^^^^ and all goes well
next, if I use kies to upgrade to JellB will I still have root? Or should I upgrade to JB first and then root? I will likely use a custom rom anyway, but Im the kind to wanna go one step at a time and not just jump into someone elses build. Possibly building my own once I see things a little better.
Thanks in advance

thanks for responding to the noob. Update successful now I will try this method.
recarcto the
Super easy, but when I launch titanium backup it says "sorry I could not acquire root privileges"
since the phne was used I tried again thinking it was rooted, but still same message. Oddly super user won't disappear.
IDK if its the CWM_Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2 is the issue or not but I found "Superuser.zip" file from a different sight.
It is trusted as well, so well see if it does the tirck...
IT DID NOT!
superuser still apperas but titanium backup says could not gain root access.
Really strange cuz superuser appeared after both times. and the subsuqnet third...HOw can I make super user go away now? I thought repeat process would unroot but that seems not to be the case.
any advise would be grand.
*****************************************EDIT**********
Just in case for future droid noob like me (bs I can't put links till i have 10 posts)
I figured it out...4 hours later....There is no guide for this and I may be lucky my trial and error's did not brick the device but I was careful.
What I had to do to get the t989uvmc6 root permissions was easy as pie, but it was finding the right components so here they are. Perhaps I should start a new thred.

*Second, phone in download mode (phone off hold volume and plug in usb cable) *A note here I did turn on "usb debugging" in developer options, general settings, but I'm,not sure it was mandatory
*Third run oden 307 ----> htt

Let everything happen. Once all this is done and nothing is happening shut phone off.
*fifth, Whatever mode its called when you hold both volume buttons then press power till feel one vibration and let go power button (keep holding volume buttons)
*sixth, You will get the TWRP screen. touch the reboot option then touch the system optoin (after this it is pretty much duhmmy proof mode)
It will say system is not rooted want to root slide for yes (duhhh)
magic will happen excitement ensues. phone restarts
Last, once the phone starts go to apps and youll see the superuser icon click it (it gives you options READ THEM and more duhhhh mode happens)
it will tell you the magic is not quite done yet.
Go ahead and follow the instructions. (or just install superSU should work too) (must have data or wifi!) There is a diff way here for sure
There are two options I choose the one recommended which was to download it
(it was the option on right of the screen and NOT the "play" icon on the left. I can't remember the name of that choice as im tired right now)
None the lesss it will be in the description given to you, you did read it and skip this, right?
Once you have superSU downloaded some other $%*# happens the phone will reboot it self on last time showing some quick command line (well mine was quick)
then when you get back into the "main" os go apps and you should see a different icon called superSU
you will then be rooted. Find a root app like titanium backup to be sure
So now Ive done all that somone skool me on the easier softer way?
Hope this helps someone cuz it would have helped me!
Now,
To hope the battery lasts more than 4 hr!
Can somebody help me? I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy s2. I had it rooted on 2.3.5 (or 2.3.6 not sure). Now its 4.4.2. I flashed a updated radio and Hellkat-20140105-Hercules and 4.4 gapps. It was successful but I lost root and now gallery and camera does not work any more. I'm stumped. Can somebody direct me to the right path?

Sorry, no idea.
i beleive that 4.3 and brick problem is only if you took the OTA factory update . i didnt use these files but i did use that exact procedure and i was on CM 10.2 which is 4.3.1 and had no problems. i tried a friends sim card from rogers( im on virgin mobile) and it worked great .
where's the 4.1.1 file? hotfile is closed so http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ doesn't work
1. download CF-Auto-Root-espressorf-espressorfxx-gtp3100.zip
2. download odin (any version)
3. install latest kies on windows to get the adb and usb drivers installed on your system
4. Turn off your TAB2 and wait for vibration feedback indicating complete shutdown of system
5. now hold volume DOWN button + power button to get into DOWNLOAD MODE and confirm by pressing volume UP button to get into download mode.
6. now open odin on windows and then connect your TAB2 via usb and wait until the drivers for adb are installed
7. if everything is perfect, then odin should detect your TAB2 and you will see a confirmation saying "ADDED" and an indicator will glow
8. extract the CF-Auto-Root-espressorf-espressorfxx-gtp3100.zip file into any folder and then using PDA option in odin, browse to the extracted file and select it
9. ##WARNING## ONLY "auto reboot and F.RESET time " should be checked, all other options should remain unchecked.
10.press start button and wait for it to be flashed.
11.TAB2 will do rest automatically and you will get back to your homescreen automatically
12. GUESS WHAT? now you are ROOTED!!!!:good::good::good:

OK I have a Galaxy Tab3 GT-P5210, I have developer usb debugging enabled, I have the Samsung KIES package installed on my PC and I've downloaded Odin307, the TWRP package and the ROOT package that is well documented in this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525630
The problem I'm having is with the step that says:
Power down your device and put it into download mode. To do this, press and hold the Home + Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously for 3 to 5 seconds until you see the warning screen.
When I do this it goes into something called 'Android System Recovery <3e>" with a prompt that says "# MANUAL MODE #" with the following options:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
and it does not show up in Odin so I cannot get further...how can I resolve this?
as a rant here, I really wish Google would mandate that all providers supply an option to root the device and install stock Android...this nonstop jumping thru hoops just to have basic control over a device you spent good money on is ****ing stupid

Hey man download mode is where you flash custom recoveries and custom or stock Roms on your device. The answer to you for download mode is your not holding it down enough. first power off the device. Second hold these buttons all together: power + Volume Down + home button. Keep holding these buttons for a minimum of 10-15 seconds or more and it will go into download mode. From there you open up Odin on your pc and then you should see in a box your com port this means your connected. From there you it PDA and you select your recovery file. It should end with
.md5! Make sure re-partition is not checked or you will brick your device! Now it start and once it's done it will say Res OK. Good luck!
got it

You know what it was? Its a brand new tablet for me and so when it is held lengthwise (like you'd hold a phone normally) the Vol+ button is at the BOTTOM, not the top like every phone I've ever owned. So I was holding Vol- instead and that's why it wasn't working for me...boneheaded mistake but thanks for the reply...I can now boot it into Download mode ...though I still can't get Odin to recognize it
thanks for the reply

connecting to odin is the same for every samsung device. I am going to try my best to help you out so here we go. Check to make sure you have the samsung usb drivers. to do that go to my computer then local disk then go to programs and files. if you see the SAMSUNG folder and when you open it and you see the drivers folder containg the usb drivers then if you don't see it then we need to install the drivers. first uninstall kies. you don't need this.the download and open this exe file: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_nizg6yUZ0NS1RodDBxd0E1MFU/preview . install it normally.

After trying some different things I got Odin working, was able to install TWRP and root the device so that's all good
Now I've downloaded the framework-res.apk and decompiled it, modded it as i wanted to and recompiled using the Android Multitool app and the final issue I'm having is pushing the new framework-res.apk back to the device. The Android Multitool app claims it pushes the file but it does not. So I downloaded the latest sdk and I'm going to try using the raw ADB tool to push the file and see if that works...wish me luck
You can use twrp file manger to do that.
Just copy your file to sdcard while connected to pc and then reboot to recovery use file manager in advanced settings. Find your file and copy it to where ever you need it.
Couple questions
I just picked up a SM-G960F/DS for experimenting with and am wondering about rooting it. I haven't put a SIM in it yet. Can it be used without a SIM card? I don't plan on using it as a phone just connecting it to Wi-Fi and experimenting with it. I am not sure what firmware to put on it. It came with BUILD R16NW.G960FXXU1BRF8. I live in Canada and I am not sure which firmware to download for it.
As far as rooting goes does it need a SIM in it to do any of this? Can i just add my Google account to get my Apps on it after rooting?
I have not rooted anything since my S6 and searched a bit and think this is the steps to root the S9.
I think that I should first be on latest Firmware before starting this?
Steps as I found info on process to get Root
got Odin3_v3.14.1.zip on PC and USB drivers - my SM-G960W connects okay
1 enable OEM unlock on phone
Downloaded twrp-3.3.1-1-starlte.img for S9 to PC
Use Bixby Key+Volume Down+Power to enter Download Mode and connect the device to PC USB
2 Open Odin and un-tick auto reboot in "options" tab, make sure that device is detected, Put twrp-3.3.1-1-starlte.img file into AP tab, Click Start
3 When Odin shows "PASS", disconnect the usb cable and press simultaneously the "Bixby key" + "Vol. Down" + "Power" buttons until the download mode disappears
At the precise moment the screen becomes black, immediately release the "Vol.Down" button and press the "Bixby key" + "Vol. UP" + "Power" buttons during 10 to 15sec to forcefully enter TWRP recovery
4 in TWRP swipe "Allow modifications"
5 Go into Wipe menu and select "Format data"
6 Reboot into TWRP recovery again, swipe to "Allow modification" connect phone to PC again Put RMM-State_Bypass.zip and no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.1.zip zips into external sdcard (or does this get done all in step 5?)
7 Flash RMM-State_Bypass.zip
8 Flash no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.1 zip
9 Reboot the phone into system Setup Google account.
now it gets confusing as to what to do for root...
So any help?
I imagine that the first thing I need to figure out is what firmware to download for it.
