[Q] Unrooting/Updating Help - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Hello,
I have an Android Incredible 2, which is currently rooted using Alpharevx. Ice cream sandwich came out this morning, and I would like to update to it. Is there any way to do this without unrooting? If not, how do I unroot my phone?
Thanks for the help.

Hi there.
Ice Cream Sandwich is not available for our phones yet, however im sure the development team will cook up something nice.
In the meantime, since you are rooted you can take advantage of any other ROM on the forum.
Considering you rooted without any knowledge of how to unroot i would suggest reading the thread in which that rooting method was posted to determine an unroot in case you need to do so.

Thank you for the redirect. I have one more question. Where do i type in the code that it refers to?

What code?
Did you root your phone or did someone do it for you?
You need to have adb set up on your computer. And I have no idea why you want to unroot after I advised you that Ice Cream Sandwich is not available yet. You are going to be putting yourself at risk of bricking your phone for no reason and possibly have your bootloader locked again.
Please be careful with your device if you do not know what you are doing...do some research on the following:
Adb/Fastboot for Android
Rooting/Unrooting your phone

You're right. I did root my phone myself, but I am a high school student, and so am not very familiar with this whole process. Thank you for the information, I will go and learn more about it.
The reason I thought ice cream sandwich was available was because my phone prompted me to update, which I tried to do, and I got stuck in a bootloop. So then I recovered, and my phone wouldn't find and service. After rebooting a couple of times, I went back and flashed a previous ROM, which didn't solve the problem. So I went into HBOOT and restored my phone to factory settings. The reason I want to unroot it because clearly I have no idea what I'm doing, and so when ice cream sandwich is available, I want to be able to update to it without going through this whole process again.

If you are using the stock ROM rooted you can update to RMK gingersense 2.3.4 which you will find over at the virtuous site. That should stop your update issues without a problem.
Feel free to keep me updated and ill be glad to help.

being a high school student shouldnt matter too much man.. but you definitely should read a little ahead on things because if you are in high school... most likely your mom and dad bought you this phone and if you brick it, warrenty is void and its not just doing the insurance replacement.. thats a whole new phone and a lot of money..

Thank you. I was not trying to use my age as an excuse, more of my current position. I am taking four AP classes, and applying to college at the moment, and so have not had the time to do any in-depth reading upon the subject of cell-phone development. I apologize if this offends you in some way, but I assure you, if I had the time, I would be more informed.

[Q] How to ROOT from OTO Gingerbread S-ON and back to CM7???

1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

I just thought you would have to re-root. Sucks...

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

On a side note this is important to all of us.. What about all the 2nd gen phonea that are coming with s on and stock 2.3" .. Htc may say that they arent encrypting bootloadrra, but if we cant root that means sh_t.... Again this is beyond me, but at least lets focus on what needs to be done... Again this is gonna mess up everyone with a brand new evo or the 3d....

Thanks....yes I made a mistake but I've only had my EVO, or any Android for that matter, for a couple of months so I think I've been doing pretty well until now with no help...just researching myself online and in the forums.
This was the first ota that came out since I rooted...now i have learned what not to do...and didn't know that the rooted versions pop up so quickly...hopefully they will release a new ota with the bootloader unlocked...and soon

It's useless....someone may have done as I did and now have to read through and spend more time on this BS to get to the possibility of a solution.
So are you thinking that the refurbished phone will have a newer firmware? I don't know about that but it doesn't seem to make sense....is that some thing like asurion would do? And if you do get a new snazzy updated phone are you promising to donate your time to the cause??? Lol

Hi all
Just got an Inc 2. why else would I be posting here ,,,, anyhow I gotta have root mainly just to remove bloat, really undecided on which way though, HTC unlock or a full S off through the downgrade revolutionary method, I'm not realy a flashaholic, I would like to be able to use set CPU or the likes, for battery savings and maybe a little overclocking, phone seems pretty responsive if you ask me just coming from an Eris but I haven't loaded any apps on it yet either, heck I haven't even activated it yet (guess it's a little hard to let Ginger go ) I'd post a screen shot of her but she's a little shy.
So what's everyone thoughts on this if you had just recieved a brand new Incredible 2, with 2.3.4 Gingerbread, 5.10.605.9, 2.6.35.9 kernel; and now the news of Official ICS update soon to be released which way would you go to root HTC or S off?
Can you overclock/undervolt stock kernel?
Is it possible to flash a different kernel?
Any and all input on this will be greatly appriciated, Thanks In Advance

You're gonna wanna downgrade and s-off. It's easier to flash ROMs, also you can flash radios that way. It's a slightly longer process to do so, but its worth not spending extra time when flashing ROMs. Mainly because you have to flash the kernel in fastboot if you use HTC unlock.

Thanks for your quick response, thats just it I'm not realy a flashaholic and if I see a rom that I would like to flash, a little extra work wouldn't bother me stability speed and no issues have presedence for me, not worried about look at what I got, just overall balanced goodness

It doesn't. It downgrades the hboot version. Now, if you s-off, you can flash any radio you wish. The recommended one is either the latest .1111 or .0722.

Yes I have the latest.1111 with 2.3.4 Gingerbread, 5.10.605.9, kernel 2.6.35.9, it downgrades more than just the hboot doesn't it? I thought it downgraded the whole OS.
It will put you back to 2.2 or 2.3 I think but it does not affect radio. You van then flaws one of the rooms based off the latest stock update ( what you have) if that's what you want. Also, you can't oc stock kernel, use dresdills 21. Also if u use the HTC method you are guaranteed void warranty cause they know what you done. If you use other method you can revert to completely stock if you need too and they will never know if you need to because of hardware issues. Charging ports have been known to go bad so I would keep that in mind...

Yes I've heard about that kernel, I'm pretty sure that once you root they know it cause all there tracking, or most of there tracking software goes offline for them, and they know that the only reason, for the most part, that the phone dissapeared is root. I thought htc unlock still gave you a warranty although more limitted. And yes I learned from the Eris when the phone is on the charger be extra extra carefull with it, even if it meens don't touch it.
Root doesn't take out anything, and I'm not sure what tracking your referring to anyways. The only way anything would be took out is if you do it, or the rom you install does. If they know you done it, and you think it may be more limited, that's just a way of saying now we have a reason to deny you anytime we feel like it. But if your set on that, do it, not gonna argue its your phone could care less, you wanted opinions you got it, either way good luck...

I never said that root in and of itself took out anything, it's the stuff we take out once we root. Your not sure what tracking I'm referring to, Look up Carrier IQ .
I charged this phone turned it on bypassed activation shut off the networks just to play around with it and it was still reporting network traffic, How, Why?
This phone has the ability to get past the switch thats thrown when you shut off your data connections. I did just activate the phone, I had forgot to turn data back on before doing so, but it didn't matter; after phone booted up and was settling in I saw the 3g icon pop up in the status bar, thats what reminded me, [I thought I shut that off] and sure enough it was still off, yet it still sent data, but where to? I'm not set on anything yet, yes I'm trying to get many opinions and I thank you for your input this phones been out for a while now and many things have changed since it was first released, like ICS, and htc unlock of the hboot. Much of the activity about rooting this phone is a year or more old and with the deals and such that are being thrown around now to move the remaning stock off shelves there will be ( I'm sure ) many newcomers to the phone and this forum so an updated collection of thoughts on this I figured would be welcome especially if there was some input from the veterans of this phone. And again thank you

I know that that's what they had said Officially But I OFFICIALLY have my doubts . Have you ever checked it out with the app?

as a matter of fact yes i have, our stock rom 5.xx is clean
the ports may or may not have it (depending if it was cleaned out or not by individual dev) but since its not running on the phone/carrier it was meant to, it wouldnt properly function
honestly i never really cared that much, i think the ciq drama was blown out of proportion

I'm glad to hear that.
Blown out of proportion? Not really, Think about it you send someone a text messg and CIQ knew what the text said BEFORE your intended recipient even recieved it,....... before you even sent it!

idk, doesnt really affect me...but the Sprint guys were all up in arms about it...mabye if i had a phone that it was an issue on id care more
Anyways, I flashed a custom ROM and CIQ would be gone anyways. I think nowadays we have to realize that we are going to always be tracked in some way.
JRngln said:
I'm pretty sure that once you root they know it cause all there tracking, or most of there tracking software goes offline for them, and they know that the only reason, for the most part, that the phone dissapeared is root.

Yep, I checked, it appears you did say that, but anyways... things are easier with the s off alpha rev x method but the other way will work too so whatever floats your boat...

Should I Root?

I was just wondering if it should root my Epic 4G Touch. I have a few reasons for wanting to Root, namely, Free WiFi Tethering, and silencing the Camera. However, my concerns are voiding the warranty, and losing my data. In your opinion, is it worth it?
Also, if I unmount my Micro SD card before rooting, there's no chance of losing any data on it, correct?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I say go for it and you got nothing to lose. I was also once contemplating to root
or not and im glad i did
Phones can also be unrooted and restored if something happens to go wrong.
You will have lots of benefits such as using custom roms, using root applications,
modding your entire phone to your liking etc etc...
Should I root?
Yes you should root for sure the android world is ever expanding and becoming easier and more complex Ive learned so much tinkering with my E4GT how to root use odin install roms over clock under clock change voltages memory tweeks Mali GPU tweeks. also it makes jail breaking and unlocking the iphone look like a sad little controlled by apple baby the android OS is wide open to any and all customization and you dont need google's permission to do it. so yes i would root any android phone its so much better than stock ROM and Kernels. Good luck please post any more questions if u have them ill help you out the best i can.
Rooting really unlocks the potential of your phone. I know most Sprint stores are probably different, but when I picked up my E4GT the guy at the counter had a custom rom on his phone. And told me not to worry about rooting/flashing as they can usually reset the phone (before ICS of course). And if they couldn't save it, then I would have to pay a 100 deductible. Not to shabby, and of course haven't hard bricked yet (knock on wood). Just make sure to read, read, read! And check out qbking 77 videos on youtube. That guy is a genius, and if you follow his steps to a T then you will be fine. Good luck!
+1 on the qbking77 videos he makes it easy to follow along. I rooted fiollowing his steps with no problem.my phone is faster has more abilities has better battery can tether backup make nandroids for safe keeping. Just as said above read and research before jumping. You won't be sorry you did.
Question do I have to unroot to update to ics when its finally released?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Ok first off the answer is no if you do it with sfhubs method and secondly before any of you guys start messing with your phones do some research. "Should I Root" has got to be one of the most repetitious threads in here. A little research of the thoughts of others asking the same question would be a great start to your Android adventure.
Honestly, this is a great place but it does take up some of your time and brain power. Asking others about what to do with your personal device is a lill off center to me but its ok as long as if you destroy your own personal device you dont go blaming others.
Like mentioned QBKing has plenty of videos and please Please please read the stickys in all sections. I may sound crazy but too me if you have to ask this question about rooting your not ready. Its not for the faint of heart...
Side note - If you learn anything in here is that the upgrade for ICS will be here long before or minutes after its official. Never understood why people unroot to get an update to root again... Is it just me? *scratches head*

I really don't care that you can't understand. I want the official release. I don't want to use roms that have minor issues or have none working features. Yet anyway. I'd rather be safe. Now as for my question. I did a search an I get conflicting results. One says updating ota with root doesn't matter. Second one is you can update with root but you wont be able to root after.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
If you have to ask, NO.
Haha that Sprint guy at the counter sounds like me, custom rom on my E4GT while showing customers my phone. I love it when some ask "wow did ice cream sandwich come out? Can I update to that??" By all means rooting and roming your phone is not for everyone, but I say go for it. Don't expect everything to work perfectly, you need to understand there will be bugs and glitches every now and then and that's why this is my hobby. Always something to do

Hahahaha... ahhh you don't care hahahaha ok but buddy if you really did your research like you said you would know that.... Ya know what just go to sfhubs threads and do a little reading and you will find your answer which I answered already.
My bad this place is about helping others who need helps so here you go..You do know that sfhubs tars are rooted stock with NO I repeat NO changes... I have already answered that I believe but I guess you were stuck on something else I said.... Hahahahahaha
here it is below from sfhubs thread here
The ONLY change was the addition of ROOT to the ROM. NOTHING else was changed. If you made no other changes, you WOULD be able to install an OTA patch update (based off of EL29) on top of this w/o issues.
root, unroot to root again?
Playya Out!
it is definitely worth it, and if you plan not to root it, you should just give it to someone more deserving and get the iphone. i had the same question a few weeks ago and after much reading and a little bravery, ive grown to trust myself highly with some of these processes. really rooting isnt even what youre after for the good stuff, its just a prerequisite. i recommend reading a lot though. and like others said, qbking77 is your guiding angel lol

How can I get my Nitro back to stock

I recently let a guy borrow my phone while we were fishing a bass tournament and he dropped it in the lake. He gave me his nearly brand new Nitro as a replacement. The problem is that he had rooted his Nitro and didn't back it up before he rooted it. I want to get the phone back to stock like it came out of the box but being the noob that I am, I have no idea how to do that. I am sure I could pay LG to do it for me for a price. I am a disabled vet and my disability checks aren't as big as my active duty checks were so every nickel I have is more than accounted for. Is there anybody out there that can help with the software and directions? I am fairly computer savvy but I have a long way to go as far as my cell phone knowledge goes. Thanks a million for any help you guys can provide!!

If you can wait just a couple more days, there will be a very easy way to install the latest Android version to your phone that will restore it to factory defaults but with the new Android version released by AT&T. It's supposed to officially release on July 31. Once that day comes, you should be able to follow these steps: http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/ATT_Update/index.jsp
Thanks!!
Man, it will be that simple? No more root or anything? I know I must sound like a complete moron but until I learn alot more about roms, etc, I just need my phone to be stock. He said it had clock mod or something like that. I assume all that will be gone as well? As soon as I get an upgrade availability, I am going to use this LG as a guinea pig as I learn about phone customization. I'm sure I'll end up ruining it but maybe I will learn something first. Thank you very much for the response. I can definitely wait a couple more days.

Well have fun lol. that tool does seem pretty easy. I bet it could be used in case anything gets screwed up to... but you never know..
And clockworkmod is a backup type thing where you can flash zips ( like roms, kernels, etc ), or make backups of your phone, and restore them.
But really though if you dont care about a little faster phone and a little more custumization then normal you probally wont need to flash roms and such
but have fun

Yeah, that update method will remove Clockworkmod and you will be unrooted. There actually wasn't a very efficient way to get back to 100% stock until this new update comes out, so it's pretty good timing on your part. ;p
Well, guys, I got my phone updated...I think. Right in the middle of the update, my doorbell rand and my dog took off for the door and pulled my usb cable out of the phone. I got it plugged back in withing a couple of seconds. It seems to be working okay. I wonder if it messed anything up. I tried to re-do the update but the LG Update tool said the phone was updated and wouldn't update again. I guess we will see.
That's not good...

To root, or not to root. Solos' Long journey to finding his fate.

Yeah pretty much sums it up. I rooted my first note 2 everything was fine then all of a sudden i installed a kernel and it would take 12 hours to charge to full from fulll empty. and about 15 min to even turn on. ever since then i cracked the screen and got a replacement. kinda liking it stock. but kinda wana root it again. only thing stopping me is that i dont want anything to happen to this phone. I DUNNO WHAT TO DO. any suggestions?
I don't understand why you people think root access on a phone is some big mystical journey that must be deeply considered before undertaking on ' the path' . It's one click and it's done. Another click and it's gone. What's the big deal.
Please close this thread. Man. What in the world....
Edit. In fact you need an I phone so that you don't have to ponder these 'monumental' decisions anymore....pfft. please. I think this is a troll.

Whether or not you should root your phone is completely up to you. If you like stock, leave it stock. You don't have to go around flashing new kernels or ROMs if you're satisfied with stock. I rooted it because I wanted tethering and unlimited multiwindows... I have the stock kernel and stock ROM but deodexed with a few mods that I like. There are a ton of awesome ROMs out there but I'm not trying to win a popularity/nerd contest as to who can make the most changes to their phones. Make your phone the way you want it and what you want out of it.
Pretty much what i'm saying is are you happy with your phone right now? what would you change about it and is it possible to do this easily?
I thought about rooting also, but I'm happy with it stock and have no issues what so ever. This is the first and only phone I've not rooted. There's always a downside to rooting, whether it be updating, bugs, whatever. I'm enjoying my phone as is with apps I don't like simply disabled.

Hands Down. You Have To Root.
AOKP, CMX.1, AOSP LiquidSmooth Are All Available Now.
Good Luck.
It's just that you're thread doesn't say anything. I mean it's like asking if the sky is light blue or kinda blue. I mean you could have at least had a halfway good question....bah I'm not even going any further. I quit

I personally don't see enough evidence for trolling but I think it was the literary license you took with "Solos' Long journey to finding his fate" that raised the troll alert for some. Had you merely titled it "To root, or not to root" you may have had less suspicions (but who am I to tell you how to express yourself.. some of us tend to be more or less tolerant than others & I found value in your thread)..
You may want to check out my thread as I too was exploring the "to root, or not root" debate given how remarkable the Note2 is. As I mentioned there I honestly am very happy with the all the customization available in Go Launcher over stock TW & so far satisfied with the battery life which prompted the need debate but I also think I should be able to tether wirelessly with my data allotment on occasion & check out Titanium backup & all Avast options that require root so I will likely root-update this weekend as I want zero downtime during the week. I do appreciate the stability I'm currently experiencing so if that becomes compromised I am trusting posters here that its full unroot option would enable easy reversibility. I also currently have Monthly4G™ Handset Protection but hopefully I won't ever have to use it. -Peace
