[Q] Need Advice with my Upgrade - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had the Epic 4G since December 2010. I like the phone and everything but I hate the lack of updates. It took forever for Froyo and then forever again for Gingerbread. Granted...I did root it and had fun with that. But even CM7 didn't get out of an Alpha. But that's neither here nor there. Gingerbread is coming soon to the Epic and Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to the rest of the world. I have a upgrade available and I don't know why and I'm not complaining about it. I don't think the Galaxy Nexus will see Sprint before next summer when Sprint starts unrolling LTE to some markets. Between now and then I can't stand seeing all these other phones with Ice Cream Sandwich knowing that I just got Gingerbread. I'd preferably like to obtain a Nexus S 4G for cheap and activate it on my line then wait for the Galaxy Nexus to release and use my upgrade on that. In the likely event that I don't get such grace, does anyone think that I should use my upgrade now and get the Nexus S 4G? Or should I just keep my phone and suck it up and wait?

wait it out and get the nexus s off cl or something. Or call sprint and try to get them to replace the epic for the ns4g.

I tried that yesterday and got some guy that is on these forums and he was giving me tips on rooting my phone -____-. I'll try again later. What kinda complaints could I give to get them to not give me another Epic?

Look in the thread that's floating around her but the best things would be GPS being crappy, skipped keys, loose screen/case, and that's all I can think off the top of my head.

SGS2EpicTouch or wait for SGS3?

dont know if it has already been asked so if it had then mods just delete thread or whatever it is you guys do....
I currently have the Epic 4g (og one) and im going to open another line with sprint and going to get the Epic touch but ive been reading some leaks/articles/etc saying that samsung is going to announce the SGS3 @ the MWC in barcelona in FEB 2012 and that they were going to have it release at the same time in the europe and US markets before the IPhone 5 is released. the specs on the SGS3 are crazy which in reality are way more than what i need on a phone but still dont mind having. So my question should i wait (which i can somewhat do) or should i just get the epic touch and upgrade as soon as i can to the SGS3 which would be by next fall?

just saying if its true that the sgs3 will be out shortly then should i wait or not?
also sgs3 should have NFC
not sure if sprint will actually setup the rev b network but if it does i dont think epic touch will be capable of taking advantage of it and that should be something the sgs 3 should have ( well i atleast i think)
There will always be a newer better phone on the horizon. What it really depends on is if this phone is good enough to keep u content with ur phone situation for atleast a year.

"Just about to be released" was morphed from "to be announced in Feb" when in reality a US release between May and August is most likely. Remember when the SGS2 was coming to America and supposedly to be released when the E3D was released...in late May/early June? Then the E3D got pushed the the 24th and the SGS2 was FINALLY released 3 months after that?
That happens every time.
I'm on an infinite upgrade cycle myself, but, once I get the Nexus Prime I'm going to settle down and keep that until the next Nexus device comes out. They set the standard for the year and most phones never come close to being as good for the entire generation.
Trust me, you can keep upgrading over and over and over...and you can wait for the next best thing to come out, but then right before that is released the next-next best thing is released.
Pick a phone you want and settle in, it'll lower your anxiety level. Just go blank on new phone tech for the year or two until you get an upgrade.
...oh, and about the keyboard? Something tells me they are dying, quickly. I wouldn't hold my breath for a top-of-the-line phone with a slider.

Honestly, if you can wait for the SGS 3 then your not ready to upgrade. I would sit on it if I were you. The SGS3 will not be out shortly. It was just announced. I suppose it could be shortly you plan to switch to At&t and are willing to pay way out of pocket for a device that is probably going to be released in the spring of next year.
Dude I think there's like one dude that's the so called source in that GSIII story and he's known for bull****. Come on dude. Require a couple sources on your blog based info. The Quad core 2 Ghz GS III u mean with the 2250 battery, at 9 mm thick still mind you and a 5.3 inch screen. Can't make this **** up. All these details all at once from this no name idiot known for bull**** just happens to come across. It doesn't exist. Never will lol.
What i usually do is buy their best phone, and then i just keep my eyes open on the latest phones. If i happen to see something i like coming soon i sell my current phone and grab the new phone. i get bored easy with phones too so i am always switching it up!
**** that, SG7 is around the corner. Just wait man...

Seeing that the E4GT is a GS2 device my guess would be yes it will.
The other sites reporting the same thing are saying Q2 of 2012 which means april-june which means we'll get it later than that.

I love the android platform, the open-ness, the developers, the support... just wish they would take a clue from apple and make sure our phones have the latest version when it drops. It isn't like it would take that long for the manufacturers to sit down and get it working. Look at the dev's we have...give THEM 2-3 weeks and they can build an AOSP rom... why cant Samsung?
There probably to busy blowin each other

There's a lot of stuff that people don't think about when it comes to these things.
Here's a developer on a phone:
1 guys (possibly a few guys) working on 1 phone or several phones with very, very similar specs (e.g. the Evo and the Incredible)
Samsung:
A whole bunch of guys working on 1: all the phones that are out (which is a few versions of touchwiz spanning 4 versions of Android now) plus all the phones in development.
It's not like we have our own software guy drawing a Samsung paycheck who works exclusively on our phone. Those guys are all busy with ICS on the Nexus Galaxy and whatever else they have on the burners cooking and will eventually probably get back to us.
Patience. People didn't think we'd get gingerbread on the Evo...then we did...then no one cared because we already had a bunch of gingerbread roms.
It'll be the same way here.
I love my Android because of the developers, not because the ****ty carrier support and lack of updates

You can't compare an evo with a Samsung product. Do you know the OGepic does not have official gingerbread yet. They have leaks but I tried them and they all are buggy. Plus being on sprint we have the cdma version of the phone. So when the European get their ICS we can't do a simple port.

Actually, Samsung does indeed have dedicated teams to support EACH phone. They have a Sustaining (or is it Sustainment?) Engineering department that allocates programmers and engineers to each phone model (i.e. the SGS1, SGS2, the Moment, etc..) each have their own team for continued support of the phone throughout it's life. Once the life of a phone reaches it's "end", then the team members are freed up and can then be assigned to the next phone that'll be released.
It's true that Touchwiz itself has it's own software team, but it's implementation and tweaks to make it compatible with a particular phone is done by dedicated teams.

Where is miui & cm7?

Coming from the og evo to this makes me sad ,theres is very little roms or tweaks for this device and most have more problems than the stock does.Wish i could port roms myself but i dont even know where to start.
Wish list:
-Working miui rom
-working cm7 rom
-working sense 3.0 or 3.5 rom
I already know 3 people that have already sold this phone cause of los and countless other minor annoying issuses but mainly no real dev support or even a sign of anything good coming any time soon.i know these things take time but this phone has the worst reception of any sprint phone i have owned to date so its hard to stay positive.Me my wife and 2 other ppl i know have all the same issues so i know its not my handset and we live in nyc where service was great before this phone.im doing my best to hang in here and not go back to my evo.I love everything about my gs2 with exception of cell reception and 3g data speeds and 4g is truly pointless.Anyone know any updates on my wishes?
Can't put a sense rom on this device and Miui is based off CM7. The CM team will be getting our device shortly (if they don't have it already). And Teamwin now has an Epic Touch and they're working on their recovery for it. Samsung cdma devices always make slower progress with development. People either have to be patient or move on.

Almost 2 months (6+ weeks if I recall) until we had CM6 RC1...
...Spoiled EVO4G scener who got in well after release I'd wager.
I had that phone on release day rooted in the RadioShack parking lot and aside from the millions of Fresh based sense roms (or themes, really) until AOSP came around the only interesting things were a smattering of cool kernels (to break the FPS cap, OC, UV, HAVS, etc)...and AOSP took almost 2 months.
OP, If you want it hack it or shut up.
EDIT: I don't mean to come off like a ****, but, a lot of us got very spoiled by the EVO4G scene...that phone was an amazing exception IRT development. I've never seen any phone accrue so much development results in such a short amount of time. I have been phone hopping ever since selling my EVO4G in June and came to terms with that a long time ago. The EVO3D is closer, but still nowhere close. There are millions of (mostly theme-based) ROMS...CM7 is coming along I hear, MIUI as well. I hated that phone, but, if you like Sense I don't know why you would get anything but an HTC. If I get an HTC and hate sense I know eventually I will be able to take it off, but, the opposite isn't anything I would bet on.
You should sell your epic touch and get a ppc6700... Just saying.

25th July 2010, 11:59 PM is when it was originally posted for the Evo. So 2 months, considering the Evo released on June 4th, 2010.
This phone has been out for 6 weeks! I'll go out on a limb here and say your expectations are out of whack dude. And no dev support? I'm sure the guys that have compiled really good kernels and ROMs already really appreciate that. I personally love slaps upside the face. I guess the guys that dev for Android find a way to block out all the BS and whiners and continue to push on for the greater good. I really don't know how they do it.
The funny thing is that the reason the EVO got so much support was it was hands down the best phone at the time.
Now Sprint has choices and with choices means less support on each device.
Just my opinion.
Once someone creates an AOSP kernel, it would help the develoment of CM7, CM9 and MUIMs.
The reason why OG EVO was so popular, because it was given to all the developers during last year Google IO. All the devs had a phone to develop on.
If you want to help, you should on work creating an AOSP kernel, its not a very easy task.
Please close this thread.

Official ICS release

Please don't get excited I am just giving some generalized info that I got directly from a Samsung employee a few months back.
I was (as well as about 30 other people) told that we will have an official ICS release in the 1st quarter of 2012. That being said I think everyone can see the progress being made and I think its reasonable to believe that we can expect the official release either by the very end of this month or in the first week of April.
Side note: I am not a developer quite yet since I am working full time or caring for my infant child when I am home. I would like to say that all of the developers that are working on this phone are awesome, and that is whether they contribute mayhem and chaos to the community or they bring mountains of knowledge to the table. I only hope that all the rest of the devs sitting on their OG evos find a way to get their hands on one of our phone and get to blowing up the forums with more roms and more improvements on things. To all the devs... thank you very much for giving all of us an experience beyond that of the average user.

Actually I am saying before mid April, that is also if they finish working out their bugs before then. I was on the last leak for a while and they are pretty close, just a few more adjustments and then I'm sure sprint will test it for a couple weeks and then we should have it.

You realize this is ridiculous right? Sprint was the first carrier to get an official GB update for a Galaxy S phone. If you followed the leaks for the OG epic, you know that they had SERIOUS issues that did not get fixed until just before release (and some of them never did, there are still random reboots on stock devices, I see it every day at work).
Just take issue when people blame things on Sprint when in fact, it's a Samsung issue. Now, I personally believe the hiring of Cyanogen was part of a big push on their part to fix their reputation for being slow to update, and I think they are making a huge push right now to release ICS for the ET because they want to hang their hat on that and use it in the future. But in the past, this was a Samsung problem, not a Sprint one.

Now the epic 4g may have had problems getting GB because it was nothing like the others (giant useless keyboard?)
ill say it again if ics didnt go through sprints hand we would have it the same the if not close to the same time the international sgs2 has it....
I blame carriers more for late updates but last year wasnt to good for Samsung... But you cant base that "argument" anymore because we are gonna have ics mid spring...
The evo 3d... Hmm maybe August?

Your argument now makes even less sense. The OG epic having the keyboard obviously didn't prevent it from being the FIRST Galaxy S device to get GB in the US. Yep, that's right, Samsung didn't release an official GB for ANY US GS1 device, until the Epic. So while there were challenges with 3rd party development (the keyboard wasn't the problem, a whole bunch of changes to the software and hardware were the problem), officially, it was first. And I would argue that the devs on the OG Epic are some of the best out there, adapting CM7 and CM9 to work on a device that is almost entirely unlike any other GS1. They continually took a device that is basically broken out of the box and turned it into a monster.
I mean no disrespect to the devs for our ET, as we have great devs here as well. We would be incredibly lucky to have devs from the OG epic come to our phone, as they are extremely talented and would bring a lot to our already excellent community. Please don't insult them again.
edit: I also should mention that the Epic was continually picked as the best GS1 varient by reviewers. Only one of the original 4 with a FFC, only one with 4G connectivity, only one with a keyboard. I would argue that the worst was the continuum, heh.

Lol this is why I hate xda/xda app I try to summarize a point and people look at it in a way that I didnt intend.. But w.e. I didn't mean the keyboard was ths whole reason why the epic 4g got a screwy GB update... Sh%t none of the galaxy s devices had stable gps.. (stock)but the keyboard didnt help... Just like the 3d technology for the evo 3d is being blamed for late ICS update....
The point that got taken away by your love and knowledge for the ugliest (IMO) gs1 is that CARRIERS I feel are to blame for late updates... Without them we would have it sooner and many can agree.. While some can disagree and blame the manufacturer... Or hardware of the phone...
And for the whole development thing? I am simply stating the phone wasnt sought after hence not many developers... Stop reading sh%t that isnt there I never said the developers where garbage.. So relax...
And if you think a keyboard is a + then Ill leave this conversation at that... Lol

Sprint has officially confirmed the evo 3d will get ics so don't feel bad. Sense is a little more heavy than twiz so it takes more time, HTC usually has their flagships updated by June.

I know but when I had my 3d (a month ago now my gf has it)
"they" (media/HTC) said it would be in the first wave of updates wigh the sensation/xe/vivid/rezound? Not sure if all of them where on the list but the sensation/3d variants where... Now its "later this year"
Its sad that last years company who seem to almost avoid major OS updates (Samsung) has picked up that "ball"
While HTC a well know manufacturer who pushes updates out (lagging with source) cant do as much for sprints "flagship" evo 3d (debatable)

I think it funny that when the LOS issue was hot and heavy it was sprints fault, now that ics is coming it is all Samsung. A little one sided? I think so.

The LOS issue was never really a Sprint issue per say. While many people argue that fact the fact of the matter is rooted or not rooted the phone had LOS issues out of the box. Sprint didn't really do much network wise to ge the issue fixed it was Samsung pushing out updates that started to fix the problem so I'm pretty sure this can go back to Samsung again not Sprint. Before I ever rooted my SGS2 I had it for a month on stock and while I had 2-3 LOS issues it was nothing that either moving the phone to a different place where it was sitting or just rebooting it didn't fix.
That being said once I did finally root the phone a month after I got it the first few EG30 roms I had massive LOS on each one. While we had a LOS checker and it did help at times there was just no way of getting around it. sadly flashing back to a pure stock rom always fixed the issue however. Move to EK02/EL29 (EK02 mostly) and the LOS was pretty much a done deal and it was gone again this was a Samsung update for modem and software in general which now fixed the problems so I don't see how Sprint is to blame in any of it. Sure they went about it and said they have no reported issues with the phone when there really were issues (LOS mostly which was a huge one for some people) but there was almost nothing Sprint could have done about that other then talk to Samsung and have them fix their software which is what they ended up having to do.

Samsung 4.1 Update List

Hey Just passing this along. Idk if our phone will get the update but since the galaxy sII is on the list there is a good chance.

Remember we are on sprint. We are always some of the last devices to be updated, if ever. Great phone- bad support from samsung and sprint.

Yes the official release may take some time, if ever, to get to us. But we might just some leaked builds along the way that would be more than useful.

I just woke up and came here to post this, thanks! lol
I really hope we get some JellyBean goodness, if not, sprint can go shove it!
We will get official Jelly Bean. It's not happening right away, but it will happen.
Our phone is CDMA which is one major reason that we won't see an update as quickly as the international SGS2…

If its anything like the moment or epic, it will be when the phone is at its end of life and no longer sold in the stores. Oh, and it will probably be the last official youll see.
I don't expect to see a jelly bean update for this phone. I would genuinely be surprised if it sees official jb.
Although they said the sgsII that doesn't mean the epic 4g touch variant. More stuff to support and more stuff to go wrong that becomes sprints problem. Also, people would see how capable this exynos really is and not go get an sgs3, with the only differences being the screen and a 4g chip you're never gonna use anyway, because sprint wants the world to buy iphones. I'm getting off this sinking ship and switching to verizon asap.

The epic branding has been retired, its now the sph-d710 galaxy s2, Samsung has promised support for a minimum of 18months after release on all devices starting with the gs2 series so we will more than likely get official JB, and it won't take as long as ICS since the upgrade from ICS to JB isn't as intensive as from GB to ICS was. Samsung has sworn off carrier branded devices and starting with the sgs3 all devices will be nearly identical except for the few differences for network compatibility. Mostly radios and modems, otherwise hardware and software will now be as close to exactly the same as the original international variant and all devices will be available on all carriers as close to the same release date as possible.

Wow if what you say is true I will probably stick with the samsungs galaxy line for my next phone, because I was thinking about going right for the next nexus no matter who it was who made it.
They can't even get ICS right, I doubt we get JB.

I'm trying to decide between the note 2 and the new nexus for my personal line, whichever I don't get for it ill be adding on my work line, ill prob be getting the sgs3 on my personal line and putting the et4g on my work line when the note 2 launches until my upgrade comes up in the beginning of Dec. My dads got the sgs3 and will be preordering the note 2 so ill get the sgs3 once his note comes in. That's one good thing about having a technophile for a dad he buys a new phone off contract everytime it drops and gives me his old one so i don't have to use up upgrades too often unless I want a nexus or something he hasn't bought yet. He's been sticking with Samsung since the et4g launched, which I'm fine with I got sick of dealing with HTC and their locked up bootloaders after the GB update on the og evo and after the moto photon I won't ever buy another moto device that thing sucked to try and mod, I can't go with a device that you have to sacrifice something to be able to flash

Why are people saying that we won't have Jelly Bean? Samsung stated that they would support this phone for up to 18 months! Believe it or not Jelly Bean might be our last official update. I don't think they will go beyond 4.1.X :0

lol i hear that but id be happy if samsung leave they task killer tho i love it
They won't do a pure Android release of Jelly Bean I don't think because it would be too much of a change for regular people, even though most of us would love it. We will probably be able to get it through sprint id though. I wish they would change the colors in tw to stock Android blue though, so much better then green and white.

Yes....but i believe that when & if that day comes, theres gonna be a butt-load of sg2 users scrambling to get back to stock in a hurry. Ironic, cause the first update is pretty much what helped to cause the mad flash frenzy in the first place,(that & growing old waiting)
