For reference im running lostkernel latest release exp+ and starburst 1.7.
At stock clock i hit about 3700 quadrant score. At 1.4 I hit about 3900. But when i go to 1.6 it freezes the phone just about every time and i have to do a battery pull. I can get it to go through maybe one out of 30 times, and i score like 4600...
Is this just the physical limitation of the processor, or is here something i can do? Quadrant always does better on a second back to back run. I wanna see if i can hit 4800. Any input appreciated!

I overclocked my phone with that exact same rom..benchedmarked it and was amazed..I left it on the charger for 30 minutes..I picked it up and droped it..it felt my fingers were gonna melt!!..had to be like 180°f!!..I had to put in the freezer to cool down..
Yes putting an electronic device that was very hot into a freezer is a fantastic idea.

Hmm, well to get the scores I get, I set min to 1600, max to 1600 and performance mode, but I wouldn't leave it like that, I just do it for benching. That would destroy your battery. Any other time I leave it at max 1400, min 200 and on demand and my phone doesn't get too hot. I wouldn't put your phone in the freezer when it's hot. Rapid cooling of hot metal/electrical parts can cause serious hardware damage.
Kinda like how you should never spray cold water on an over heated engine block, same principle.

what did you use to overvolt?

Every Epic is different. I can run 1400 all day but can't undervolt at all. Some people can't run over 1200. It just depends on your phone. If things are freezing or shutting down on 1300 or 1400, your phone most likely can't handle it

The phone runs great and crazy fast at 1200 or 1300 but i was just wondering if i could get that little bit extra boost to 1400, but i guess if my phone cant handle those speeds im just going to have to be happy with fast. lol

Also, (well its probably not recommended) some people have paid for the Extreme key for Voltage Control and OVERvolted a bit to get 1400 stable but I wouldn't recommend it unless Xan says you are good. The option is there though. I have it but haven't had the need to try overvolting

I think overvolting may help people whose phone crashes say at 1.3. If you have it stable without overvolting, I wouldn't even mess with it. 1.3 and 1.4 are already using more voltage than what's considered optimal for our phones

Sounds right. The stock settings are 1000 high and 400 low. Most people can lower the minimum to 200 with no problem. Some can run at 100 with no problem. Same goes for overclocking. Not all phones can handle 1300 and 1400. Then if you undervolt on top of lowering the minimum to say 200 or 100, you may be getting the wakelock or "Sleep of Death" lol

Thanks yall...after research..i thought i undervolted too much...but i been at that setting since i bought set cpu...i think the difference was..i switched kernel to genocide yesterday..aka..the same day i met the sleep of death..im back to the vision kernel now...what are some of yalls settings for set cpu???
I can go 1300 high to 100 low with on demand and no lock. But runs a little to hot for my taste so I usually go to 1000 to 100 I prefer battery life over speed. I am also running Bonsai that has great battery life on top of it.
I have been overclocking my CPU lately, sitting good right now at 1.2 ghz. I have it undervolted as well to prevent overheating. My question is what temperature do you associate with too hot? 100 F? more?
I dont like letting my phone get over 95 F, but im just curious to know what is considered a safe temperature range.
I cant directly measure my CPU temp, as that feature is not offered on our phone which really sucks, i have to go by the battery.
I have not the slightest clue but I would think you would go by how it feels in your hand and whether or not you can "smell" the cpu burning. I usually dnt clock it above 1.2 unless I'm gaming which is bad but I have it setup by a laptop cooler so it never overheats. Id say anything more than 90 would be pushing it.....

Not true put it like this our phones automatically shut off @ 122*F I go to 115*F when i play GTA 3 @ 1.5Ghz, but i can clock to 104*F just streaming music on WiFi.
So id say personally probably around 110*F+
Yes 105*F is hot but don't run it that high forever though.
But thats the battery, CPU stays fine so id say if your running 100*F+ For more than an hour than it might overheat??? Not completely sure but like i said everyday i play GTA 3 and get up to those temps.

Used to but because i play GTA 3 now i dont if undervolt that defeats the sole purpose to overclock so i can play without lag, once you undervolt it decreases performance but however gains in battery life.

Ha! Try hours with GPS, Bluetooth music and Tethering on... the heat seems to really hit while I'm charging and doing all that. Fact! I can't touch the ass end of the phone. It probably gets about 8 hours a week like that. Still working perfectly. Samsung tells me it's normal. It also has a lot of factors for me too. I use a 1 amp charger. After 96% it's not so bad. At night when brightness is down. Not as hot. I tried to get it to mess up but couldn't. GPS, Bluetooth, tethering, charging from 30% and 100% display, and I pushed out to a low coverage area. Didn't miss a beat or melt. Lol.

It actually shouldn't be expected. The Snapdragon S3's also ran at 1.5ghz and was pleasantly cool and the Exynos on the Galaxy Note was at 1.4ghz. Both are less power efficient and should run hotter than the S4. I've used the Evo LTE for a while with the same S4 and it barely got warm on a hot day. The issue is with the second core being weird. For those that hasn't already, make sure you flash Freeza's fix, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790061 . This fix made my phone cool and got rid of my quickly draining battery life.
Most of the time my phone will stay within "normal" (to me) range, but when I game heavily... it turns into an oven range! I've gotten so paranoid a few times, I took the battery out and let it cooled for 5-10min

Not that the numbers mean much to me, but these are the numbers you can expect. Perhaps your CPU governor/scaling is set low or deifferent than mine....or also, do you have POWER SAVE enabled?
Yes stock. I rooted and tried various rooms same score. I'm not bothered by the score just checking if others get dame score. I do have power saving on so will try tonight without it. Thanks for all the input guys. I'm trying to get a good base for comparison to jb whenever Rogers gives it to us

Power saving might be throttling the CPU so that its not running its fastest to save power. Definitely try without power saving and let us know.

Great to hear that RegBuckly.
You should FEEL a noticeable difference with certain apps, games or launcher now that you have full speed CPU scaling.
(don't for get to press the thank you button)
I'm getting 3866 in Quadrant (Normal: 5325) and 9586 in AnTuTu (Normal: 16301). Something's wrong, those are almost half what they should be.
I'm running ParanoidKANGDroid and set the CPU to "Performance" in case it was doing some powersaving stuff... is there another powersaving setting I'm missing? I turned off GPS and Sync. I even put it in the damned freezer. I've run both benchmarks multiple times after reboots and all of that and it's pretty consistent with those scores.
