i have my phone about 2 inches from laptop, but the signal strenth meter is always between like 10%-30%
how to get a stronger single? like at least 70%? or do these phones simply dont have that much power?
I havent tether with this phone. I use to tether with my droid2 the siginal was good. I probably can charge my phone in my bedroom and play computer in my living room. Im not sure about this phone

lol not my laptop, its a brand new Qosmio $1600 version with all the bells n whistles
besides that, i can simply turn on my house wifi, and it instantly goes to 100% signal, as well when i connect to my job wifi, always at 100%,even far away from the router
are there any particular settings in wifi tether though that can boost or control distance or something? maybe i have something set wrong

I cant say. I was curious when you said this and I tried every wifi device in my house including 2 android phones an iphone 4s, and a 3gs and they all show full bars from WiFi tether. mine is a direct install from the app store, so I don't know what to tell ya....

hello i just upgraded to the newest app
can you explain exactly how to boost?
like that one option says "reduce transmit power"
what setting should it be on for max boost?
(im not good with the db settings and how much strength each represents)

no problems here...
I was running it with the following:
SSID broadcast off
WPA2 Personal
Mac filtering
I turned SSID broadcast back on and it works fine now, someone else want to replicate those settings and see if they have problems?

I am having problems connecting to my wireless router, my Evo is saying I have a "poor signal" at my computer desk but my computer is showing me at 100% signal. I think its a Evo software thing but thats my 2 cents. I don't use my wifi often with my phone any way so no biggie for now.
I also have ssid broadcast off and I cant get it working.

Hi everybody, So far I love the EVO even without 4g. Anyway after I turned on my ssid I connected okay. I can see the market and find what I want to download. It says downloading but never does. I have downloaded apps with the 3g but I don't have a signal at my home. I always used winmo before and had no problems downloading on my home network. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what I might be missing. I got root okay and have been having a blast but I sure would like to download some more apps while I am at home. Thanks, Rick
SSID broadcast off and no issues for me thus far.
Yes, me too. Sort of.
My Evo shows 1 bar of wifi signal strength at a distance of 8 feet from the router where my iphone shows full bars. I do get decent download speeds using xspeedlabs free but the upload speed seems to cap at 750kbs where the iphone goes over 1mbs with the same test. There is definitely something weird going on.

I am having similar results as far as signal strength. Sitting 2 feet away from my router I am only showing one bar of signal strength and getting very slow speeds. All of my other wifi devices (including those that are on the opposite side of the house and downstairs) are getting signals ranging from "good" to "excellent". Something definitely seems to be up with the wifi.....

I was having wifi issues too. I'm running dd-wrt on my router. Turns out just power cycling the router fixed it. I think I'm going to setup my router to reset weekly.
I get the same issue of having 1 bar of signal strength, regardless of how close I am... even tried on 2 different wireless routers, Linksys-dual band N, and Net gear A/B/G.
I get strong signal from both routers on all other devices, iPhone, iTouch, Touch Pro, Laptops, etc...
I've played with all the settings on the EVO, turning off the mobile data and only having wifi on, changing the encryption settings on the routers... nothing seems to work.
I love the phone, but kinda bummed about this issue.
I have ssid broadcasting turned off and I'm using WPA 2 with no problems.
There is a long, angry thread about this over at HTC's own EVO forum: http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/94/t/2929.aspx
I'm also getting less Wi-Fi performance on the EVO than on other devices in the house.
Using Fresh 1.0.1 rom and also the new Cyanogen rom, with the SSID off, I cannot connect with WiFi, with SSID on, it works fine. Using Cisco/Linksys e2000 router.
Tested with my iPhone with SSID off, it connects no problem. So the problem is not my router.
Is this limitation of EVO?
When I measured speed from speedest.net app on my evo with 4g on, I get between 3-4 mbps download speed - and web sites and such load very fast. But when I tether my evo with 4g on and measure the speed on my laptop, I get barely 0.2-0.3 mbps download - and watching streaming content of the laptop is useless - all it does is buffer forever.
Anyone know how to make this work?
Thanks!
No one has a clue?
What tether?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am speaking about the wireless tether app
The latest version?...ie, one off market?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am using "2.0.5 pre 8" which came with Fresh 3.2.0.0
I'm using 2.0.5 Pre 9 and with 4G am not really doing any better than you...then again, on the phone it's slow as crap, too.
I don't think it's your wifi tether...i think it's the app giving you false readings. I used to use usb tether (before EViO went to a kernel that wouldn't support it) and the speeds weren't any better.
You can see if it works on your kernel and verify wired vs. wireless speeds...
Bumping because of the same issue
I get 8 to 10 mbit consistantly on my 4G on my speedtest app and transfer speeds when downloading files on to my phone.
However, with Wifi tether I can't get any higher then roughly 1.5 mbps on my laptop. I've tried different channels, different security settings, no security at all... etc.
I do suspect it's a software limitation because the app itself is meant to tether 1x/3g speeds, and 3G itself i'd say averages between 500kbit to 1.5mbit download speeds(I'm talking roughly... could be faster or slower).
So my guess is the developers haven't bothered with the coding to make it work well with faster connections. There's no reason it should be a hardware limitation because our wireless chips are G and N compatible. I've gotten speeds around 17mbps up and down on wifi on my evo.
I think you may be right, as I'm starting to hear from quite a few people that are thinking the same thing. Everyone has crazy speeds with the SpeedTest App, then are lucky to hit 1meg with the computer.
Can someone with the "correct" kernel test the wired tether speeds???
EDIT: Just tried Calk's EViO Beta which worked with wired tether and the speed is just as slow.
The question now is, does the Sprint HotSpot tether at 4G speeds? As I said before, Calk released a framework flash that allows the use of the HotSpot without it on your plan, but it won't work (for anyone) on 4G, and automatically kicks down to 3G...
Fixed the 4G issue!
This was posted by creator of wifi-tether as a possible fix, I tried it and it fixed our issue. I now get full 8mbps download via wifi tether.
To make sure things go smooth, I would make sure wifi tether is NOT running in the background
Go into terminal on phone or adb via computer:
adb shell
su
rm /data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh
Not sure why this fixes it, but not complaining

Just curious if this happened to anyone or is it just me: most of the time I'm connected to wifi to save battery (home, school, etc) and when I'm out of range it should automatically connect me to the 3g network but it's not. I check settings and 3g is still enabled. Anyone know why?

I am also experiencing this. This happens to me when I am connected to WiFi with bad or no signal but then when I turn off WiFi and go to a good signal area it still registers no signal until I restart my phone then all is fine. Definitely a major bug.
ive had 2 of these phones, ive never had an issue with this. eh. maybe im lucky
Any solution to this?
Ever since I purchased this phone, I hardly get 3g signal. Will a hard reset fix this problem? I have to go by 4g or wi-fi on this phone for data.

having wifi on will actually kill your battery more because you have another radio running, thats why they give you the option to turn it off. (to save battery)
hmm thats odd though mine turns back on just fine
try a hard reset.
its deff a software issue

+1. Wifi Is definitelya battery saver. I leave wifi on all night at home. I get great battery life. I also never have the problem with 3g either. It always comes back even if I lose wifi signal.
The Evo3D Killer!!!
I noticed this in mine, so I went to Settings->Wireless and Network-> Mobile Network Data and then unchecked 3G and re-checked it and it hasn't had the problem since. Try it and report back.
a lot of users are having this issue along with low speed results on 3g, I read on another forum that Samsung/Sprint are working on it but I'd take that with a grain of salt. I fixed the radio wake up issue on my phone by doing factory reset and then going through the hands free activation again. Haven't had it since.
i'm having this issue too. Turning off wifi, or every time I go in an elevator and loose my 3g signal.
The strange thing though is I had this same problem with my OG Epic for the last two weeks I had it. I flashed back to the current Sprint rom and still had the problem. It was actually the reason I bought the Epic Touch on day 1.
I too am having 3G connection problems
My work is located a mile North of the 101 and Scottsdale and I can't get signal in my building, even if I walk to the big windows.
Of course Phoenix has no 4g so Im S.O.L.
Hello,
I have the epic 4g touch rooted with starburst rom. I installed android wifi tether app and I am able to connect to the wifi from laptop, but i cant actually browse to any websites. 3rd party tethering apps (ie, wifi tether, usb EasyTether, bluetooth tether) are not subjected to the 5GB Hot Spot Sprint limitation. The data used by these apps are seen as "phone data" which is unlimited, whereas Hot Spot data is limited to 5GB with overage charges/fees.
Am I right?
Plus... it's bad enough having the phone run on 4G now you want it to act like a wireless router transmitting over wifi to tether a laptop. HOT HOT HOT
I think 4G tethering is most efficient and "coolest" in temperature over USB Tethering. If you must tether wirelessly, then Bluetooth is probably better than wifi. Not as big of a battery drain.

what version of wifi tether are you using?
I'm using v3-beta-6. I can connect using 4g, browsing websites and such. But for some reason, the down steam speeds are capped at ~0.7Mbs when I run a speed test. On my phone, I get 10Mbs down. I know its using 4g because the ping time is much lower and my upload stream is 1.5Mbs.
On 3g, i'm only getting .85 Mbs down and 0.5Mbs up

I'm not sure what hot spot thread you were in but the hot spot hack works on 3g and 4g. And it reads now with 4g not help with 4g... I've used it on both ek02 and el29 with no issues. I hardly ever use sprints crappy 3g and I'm tethering fine. Also take into consideration the hot spot is infrastructure and can be access by more than just computers unlike the tether apps on the market which all are ad hoc...

Meant to edit my 1st post and I quoted myself.. Wow I must be smoking some good ish!!!
I have Calk 2.8.1 which supports sprint 4g hotspot. But in reality, I can never get download speed past the 3g speed. Upload is fast but download seems to be capped to 3g speed a confirmed by other users. EasyTether blows them all away with 4g speed of 8-10 Mbps. But of course it is not wireless and does not support infra structure mode.
Here's what I did to get full 4g speed while tethering via wifi..
Go to market and install filter proxy..
Open application, enable it and remember port number (Default is 8000)
Start wifi tethering..
Setup proxy in your browser, point it to your phone's ip address and port 8000 (if you use default)
Do this for http, https and ftp..
And you are all set.. Test your speed.

I just tested Android WifiTether 3.1beta 6 and it seems to pass the full 4g speed to connected device. I am losing 10% or less in 5 tests.

It worked once at home and then nothing at all.
Is this because of outdated driver ? or should i use app from GooglePlay ?

It would be helpful and courteous for you to post the solution. Both for curiosity of those that have tried to help; or possible future use by others with the same/similar issue.

4G switched on, or cell data not switched on?
If just 4G, I don't see why tethering would be blocked (should work fine on 3G).

I meant cell data (2G,3G,4G) not switched on.
I thought actually that wifi tethering can use my private wifi when at home.

For one thing, while I'm not sure, I don't think its technically possible for the phone to use its WiFi modem as a "sender" (router) and as a "receiver" at the same time.
Another thing, is if you already have your home WiFi network available, why not just tether the laptop directly instead of needlessly having the phone as a middle man? Using the phone as a WiFi hotspot basically defeats the purpose. Probably will even slow down the data connection to the laptop.

Actually the bandwidth speed on wifi tethering using mobile data is 2x times better than my home Wifi network. Obviously because of the 4G network.
it s 3mps vs 6-7mps when downloading..

You must have a really poor home internet connection and/or router, then.
My cable internet is around 80 Mbps, and my 14 year old WRT54 is spec'ed for 54 Mbps.

I was misleading a little bit
My internet connection is actually between 60-70 mbps on wireless router.
But i m using Internet Download Manager while downloading stuff from the internet and the transfer rate, it says, is about 2 mbps.
