[Q] Plastic or Metal? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anyone know the build quality of this yet?
I haven't had a plastic phone properly since my LG Viewty. Not sure I could go back to having a plastic phone

it is plastic. It has metal inside to make it feel comfortable in the hands.

Its plastic and not metal.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

Plastic material on the outer shell with a metallic inner frame for support.
It will not be an HTC phone. :/ Let's hope the plastic quality has improved to be a bit more on the durable side.

I never once had a problem with the durability of my NS...Granted ya it made the deice feel cheap in the hands, but who knows.

Yeah. I think that is the main concern. How the phone feels. I had an N1 and went to an HTC Sensation and I like the solid feel.
If the GN is solid, durable (scratch resistant), with a flush feel, I do not think it will feel cheap.

If it feels and acts like the plastics on the HTC N1 and Sensation, then, I'll be happy. That stuff is pretty smooth and soft, yet super scratch resistant and tough as nails.

it looked almost rubbery in the presentations..hmmm

Even though it is plastic, I always felt it solid while holding the Nexus S or the SGS2. I like my phones light so don't mind the plastic and they are durable as well.

Not.
The lateral frame is not in metal. It's plastic :-(
Tha back cover il rubbed.

[Q] Neoprene or hard Plastic?

Which one protects the phone more?
Also, are there any sleek, cost-effective ones (neoprene/plastic) for the GS2?
The main issue I've always had with protectors are that they add too much bulk to a phone.
Should I bother getting a screen protector considering how they use Corner Gorilla glass? My sister's captivate has a few minor scratches on the screen even though it's quite durable.
i have a sillicone cover on my s2 and i dropped it about 1.8 meters onto a tiled floor and it just bounced, no damage at all
I got this the other day:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150622947323?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
it's a black aluminum moulded back, with a silicone liner that goes around the phone. I'm *really* pleased with it. Protection feels great, it protects the camera and there's a silicone lip over the edge of the display which protects it.
Really chuffed with it and very cheap...

as for me, i always use a protector on all my devices. sure, the gorilla glass is scratch-resistant. they key word there is RESISTANT. it's not scratch-PROOF
when you do see the scratches, it's too late then. that's why i use a screen protector. i want the gorilla glass to be flawless.

The only reason I don't like using a screen protector is because it makes the screen feel... plasticky.

Ditto. My 10" thick silicone cover on my s2 also does a remarkable job of protecting my phone. I dropped it 2 meters onto the floor and it has been bouncing ever since.
But seriously. Most good looking cases are hard plastic variants. Soft cases protect more but it ain't pretty usually. So there's a trade-off.

Touche. For my rebuttal. Hybrid cases still add more bulk as compared to hard plastic. One of the key selling points was how thin and and light the sgs2 was.

And because it's sooooo thin, a thicker case can still make it feel good in hand
Hybrid is nice, but it's Otterbox so it's expensive AND thick. I'd sacrifice some protection for style. I'm not going to war with this thing. I just want to protect it from some falls.
Are there any 2-in-1 plastic + silicone combos? The Otterbox one requires two pieces.

of course, one cannot expect a good protection if you keep your cases as thin as possible.
no way around it i guess. u want protection, u really have to add bulk.

There has to be a plastic + neoprene single piece casing out there. It makes perfect sense since it reduces thickness as well as offer protection from both materials.
I'm willing to pay a little more if this exists somewhere. No thick otterboxes.

case for edge to edge display?

the case i have makes it hard to swipe from the edges. anyone have a recommendation of a cool case that leaves some room around the edges of the display?

i honestly don't know... its the only one they had at the Verizon store when i got it.
the case does not cover the edges of the display, but i can only see a thin thin line of the bezel between the case and the screen.
I have this one and it's pretty cool, no problems with it.

I just got this one today it comes up the sides just to the edge of the screen and doesn't come above it, covers the beloved dimple, but hardly adds any size to the phone to wreck the feel in the hand.

Does this have the "sandpaper" texture to it? It looks exactly like this case, except this one is hard: Amazon, Sandpaper Case
I have this case. Very slim, doesn't have a lip to protect the screen when you set it down but it gives you the edge to edge swipe you want.
http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Palett...&qid=1383968176&sr=1-1&keywords=moto+x+poetic
I'm using the poetic palette as well.
I like it so far, but I also like the diatonic for the protection, button feel, and lip protection. However, the diatonic feels a bit too fat.

I wouldn't call it sandpaper but it does have a slightly rough texture.
I think the Anker, Sandpaper, Bear Motion and the Poetic are all the same case with different branding.

I think the Sandpaper one is a hard case though. The Anker is flexible. I'm leaning towards the Anker--but yes. You're correct.
i got the quicksand. same as the anker sandpaper bear motion. it feels great and does not slide on slick surfaces. i think its the perfect case. only downside is it does not protect the glass.
i am giving away a couple of them maybe a few. over on the moto x support forums. go comment with an idea for the phone and get a chance to win it.

Toast real wood wrap for Moto X

So I just saw that Toast is now making a real wood back skin for the Moto X. I think they look pretty good.
http://www.toastmade.com/Home.html
Apparently, it's glued to the phone with some pretty strong adhesive but they have a removal video that showed no residue when peeled off. I have a dev edition Moto X but I may get one of these in bamboo or ebony.
Anyone else up for a try?

I will probably wind up ordering one, but I'm not sure of the color I want. I have a white front / cement back / black accents. Walnut or Ebony would look best, but which one? <.<
Wow... based on the videos I just watched, the adhesive is serious overkill. I recently got the dbrand mahogany skin and it is much easier to remove, while having no problem staying put.
The dbrand skin looks pretty good, but I removed because I wasn't crazy about the feel. The Moto X feels pretty insane naked and I have yet to find an accessory that improves on it.

correct me if I am wrong, but the dbrand skins are 3M material, thus not requiring the use of very strong adhesives. Real wood on the other hand is a different story

I am no expert on adhesive, and what they are using on the little strips that go on the edges of the iPhone may be necessary. But given the amount of surface area of the back, it seems what they're using is overkill. Even their own removal video shows the removal process as destroying the wood, even with heat being applied.
Is anyone worried about the lip or edge this would have in the back of the MotoX? Unless they taper the wood, you're going to feel some edges on the back.
I guarantee you're going to feel it , I can even feel the edge of the dbrand vinyl skin I have.

I've been thinking about it because after a couple months the bamboo is chipping away at the edge.
I almost pulled the trigger on two of these for my wife and I with custom text. Then I read they are glued on. No thanks. I'm not ruining my Developer Edition. Now, if they snapped on like a normal case I'd of done it. We're both disappointed.
I have one on my DE and it looks and feels awesome. There is a removal technique.
i'm thinking about getting one of these. can anyone provide some feedback on the product?
i'm especially interested in the durability, and how the edges feel afterward (some people with vinyl skins complain about rough edges from the skins)

I've been using one for a bit over a month now and have absolutely loved it. Before I bought it I thought the edges would bother me and I was planning on sanding it, but honestly it feels fine (and gives the dimple on the back a much better hold).
None of the glue has lifted and there haven't been any scratches on it (gotten a couple bad drops without any damage).
I personally have the toast back with a glass screen protector, a combo that still leaves the moto x with the same amazing formfactor but keeps it safe from 80% of what usually gets damaged

DBrand Dragon Skin

DBrand just released its new dragon skin today, and I think it looks incredible. They're also offering 20% off site wide today, so it's a good day to order if you want one. This is my first DBrand skin, so I'll post my thoughts after I get it. I really wish I had the black G6 now, because I think that would have looked even better, but I'm still excited to put it on my platinum version.
Ordered some for myself and my wife as well.
It'll be interesting to see if it actually is grippy since they bragged about that when releasing it.
I like the dragon skin a lot. I was able to get just the pieces to go around the cameras. It was pointless to get front and back because I already have a case covering back (so it wouldn't be seen) and tempered glass on front, which has slots cut out for camera and speaker, so the skin would lay flat.

I got it for the back and the camera. I have tempered glass on the front, but if the skin is as grippy as they say it is, I might use the phone without a case a little bit more...Maybe...I'm also waiting for Best Buy to get the Speck Presidio Grip in stock so I can see how that looks/feels.

It is so thin, it does not feel rubberized...maybe a tiny bit of tackiness to it. You can feel the texture of it--slightly rough. I guess I might compare it to a textured leather feel. It might add more grip if it went around the sides of the phone, but as is, I don't think it adds a ton of grip, though I am more confident that it won't slide out of my pocket when I'm sitting.

What's the point now
I'm actually considering removing mine again and just keeping the part for the cameras.
It looks good and provides great scratch resistance but not really that much grip really. In some cases I actually think it's more slippery than the naked glass back. Depends on if your fingers are dry out not I guess.
Still deciding. It makes for a harder fit in some cases as well.

Recommendations for a Slim, Soft-Touch TPU Case?

I'm a new Axon 7 owner and am currently searching for a case to use on this phone. The stock transparent case that comes with the phone is great but due to the fact it's a glossy plastic, it attracts a lot of grease from my fingers and feels dirty after a while. I also dislike it because the sweat from my hands will form into condensation on the back of the case. I also have a problem where the jack on my headphones (Audio Technica ATH-M50) is too large to fit in the hole provided.
I decided to purchase the Spigen 'Rugged Armor' case from Amazon after reading a lot of positive comments about it, but I have been left disappointed and debating whether to return it due to the sheer size and thickness that makes handling the phone (Which is already large enough!) incredibly difficult with small hands. The case does not add much friction despite the material used having a rubber-like appearance, and I actually feel more likely to drop the phone as a result of trying to fumble with the added size. As well as this, the cut-out for the headphone jack is still too small even though it's larger than the wider than the one seen on the stock case. I also find it a lot more difficult to access the fingerprint scanner due to the thickness of the case surrounding it. Another problem is that the case is quite difficult to put onto the phone and a lot harder to remove, to the point where it feels like i'm actually going to damage the phone by attempting to do this!
For my previous phone, a Lenovo ZUK Z2, I had a fantastic Nillkin 'Frosted Shield' shell case that was made from a soft-touch rubber-like plastic. It was very slim at about 2mm in thickness at most, and although it didn't offer much in the way of drop-protection, it did have a nice textured back and that increased the grip tremendously. So, despite the case not being able to protect the phone quite as much from being dropped, it didn't matter because the chances of dropping the phone in the first place were a lot less likely. I wondered whether there was something similar for the Axon 7, but instead in a TPU-style with the sealed corners, and the same thickness as the stock case that's included with the phone? Any recommendations would be most appreciated.

That looks nice, it's kinda like the old Sandstone Black finish on the OnePlus One. There was one similar to this on Amazon UK but I don't think it had the same texture to it. My only compliant with that one is that it isn't a TPU case which completely covers the corners, but on the other hand the sand texture probably adds a lot of grip to reduce the risk of it being dropped.
I'm currently looking into getting the J&D case from their official website. It's in TPU-form which covers the entire phone (Except from the power/volume buttons!) and has the textured soft-touch back I wanted. The only problem with this one is that the glossy plastic edges look a bit tacky in the pictures, but hopefully it's not as bad in person as it looks on the website. I have a discount code which knocks a subtle 15% off the price listed, so it might be worth a shot.
Looking into this now myself. The stock clear case will go yellow as they all do. Getting cheap see through black case as a temporary till I find a good one. I find the clear one a tad loose at the side.

Thanks. I'm mostly interested in the grip. I had a similar case from Amazon. fr but it was in fact quite slippery (it had a satin feel to it). Had to send it back.
The stock case that came with the Axon 7 is quite grippy but it is slowly going yellow.

Hey, have you received the case yet? Just wondering what you thought to it. If either you or @Sui77 could post a picture of it, that would be great as well. I'm still debating whether to choose this or the J&D TPU case that completely conceals the corners. I can't stand using the case which came with the phone much longer, as it's made from glossy plastic and attracts a lot of filth and grease. I imagine the ARTILVST case would be a lot better in this regard.

Thanks for posting those pictures! That's a shame to hear the grip wasn't as good as expected. I wanted something which provided more grip than the stock case, so maybe this isn't the right one for me. I also live in the United Kingdom and having the case shipped from Germany would make it more expensive in postage costs. It does look like a nice case but I am worried it might not offer much protection if the phone is dropped. I think the J&D case would perhaps be better because it has a soft-touch back and conceals all the corners properly.
I have that same Spigen case as above, an Incipio TPU case in smoked brown, and another thin "shell case". This thin shell offers zero protection in case it is dropped, making using one pointless , IMO.
The Incipio case is OK, but again thin and will show wear very quickly. The Spigen one is my favorite hands down, doesn't add bulk to the phone all ports easily accessable, and the edges offer good grip.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions regarding the cases available for the Axon 7. It's interesting to hear how you found the Spigen case not to be bulky, because I found the opposite and returned it for that exact reason. I eventually purchased one of the cheap, plastic shell cases from AliExpress similar to the that in the pictures Joaste posted above.
My overall opinion on this case has been positive but it has worn on the edges and there are cracks down all four corners. As you mentioned, a shell case does not offer much drop protection but it's definitely better than not having a case at all and it does improve the grip quite notably. However, I wish it had a textured or 'Sandstone' back to help avoid grease buildup.
I am now looking for another case, but options in the UK are limited since the Axon 7 is not officially sold here.
I've been using my TPU smoke black case with a glass screen protector for a while and enjoyed that. I got fed up with the Poetic Revolution case because of the dry protector built into the front. It allowed dust and stuff in between the screen and protector. Tonight I stripped out the dry protector and put the case on with the glass protector still on the screen. Fits nice. I have a full coverage protector to fit and might see if it will work with the Poetic. Might need to trim the inner edges of the corners near the speaker grilles.
I've been using this Proworx case since right after I got my Axon 7, so for a bit over a year now. I wasn't super impressed when I got it so I figured I'd replace it as soon as I found something better or it wore out, but I'm still using it, which says something about it.
It isn't the slimmest, for sure, but it isn't as bulky as the Otter Boxes and whatnot that everyone with a non-cracked iphone seems to have. It protects very well - TPU around the edges, fully covering the corners (which is a must, in my eyes), polycarbonate back, enough of a lip on top to protect the screen if you set it down face-down, and the cut-outs and buttons are perfect. Good drop protection - I've "thrown" it onto asphalt, tile, and concrete without the phone getting a scratch. Also works well with the glass screen protectors we covered in another thread. Easy enough to put on and take off too, with no chance of the phone just falling out.
Again, not the thinnest, but not huge, and the protection is excellent. Plus they're cheap and come in multiple colors. And as is typical with cheap stuff manufactured in China, I've seen this same case under at least a couple of other brand names, CoverOn for one. For $5-$6 I recommend trying it - I like it enough that I pretty much never think about replacing it, even though it (a clear one) has yellowed a tad. After trying like 10 cases for my G3 and finding faults with each of them, I can say I like this one enough that I'll probably replace it with the same one, eventually.

I decided to order one of these in black to try out. Have been quite happy with my Spigen, but after installing this Proworx case yesterday, I think I am falling in love. Seems to offer enough protection, fits & looks nice, AND I kind of like how the buttons are a bit harder to push in, which actually prevents me from squeezing open the screen every time I try to pick it up. :good:

Quoting myself here.
Today I fitted the full coverage protector to my Axon 7 and it fits into the Poetic Revolution case nicely! Glad I stripped out the dry protectors in the Poetic cases. I've also now fitted a plastic protector over the glass one as a quick and easy tear off to sacrifice for wear and tear but the glass one makes the front of the phone flat. Even with two stacked protectors, touch works perfectly.
The picture is slightly misleading as the black section also covers the capacitive buttons so there's no indicator of position, but not being backlit anyway, it makes little difference.
Here's a quicky bunch of pics. I have a soft TPU smoky case, black Poetic Revolution and a blue/grey Poetic Revolution which can be mix and matched. Got a couple of little bubbles under the plastic protector and will fix that later, or just remove it. Looks good with just the full coverage glass one.
If anyone is looking for a slim case I just picked up a Bear Motion Sand from eBay. Best case I've had so far for my A7 and I've tried quite a few. Feels like my OPO did.

Been using this one for over 6 months now with out any issues , not as bulky as it looks and the stand is useful . I also have a full body clear skin from clear-coat that fits superbly, clear-coat has various outlets through the UK and installs as you wait , is a bit pricey at £30 for the full skin .
I work in the building trade so need it well protected .
