OTA Update - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have followed the guides in getting my arc rooted by using .184 then .181 used gingerbreak to root.
However I cant seem to get the ota update to work.
whether I connect wi-fi or use mobile network I get a message saying could not connect to network.
I am in uk on 3 arc is sim unlocked but bootloader is locked
so I am stuck with 2.3.2 with .181 which is rooted.
sepc and seus both say update .283 is available
any way I can force the update without losing root.
really sorry if not in correct section I did raise this question in another thread but realised it may have been added in wrongly.
sorry to any mods for causing more work

few hours ago i updated the same way you did and had no trouble connecting to the network (i think you mean SE servers right?). But i am not in UK (Netherlands) and have an unbranded phone that never had simlock.
Just to be sure, you are really connected to the internet?

It would help if in the update options select "Use Wifi Only"

Turn off your data and it will have to.

but how long should it take to update?
the phone took about 5mins to download then booted up once that was about 10-15 mins ago.
i did try to start phone but no good.
there is no led showing.
so i know it is not bricked. dont want to pull battery out or anything else incase it wont boot into flash etc.
time is now 10.10pm phone has been updating close to 45 mins still not booted up 2nd time nor can i switch it on...
any help or idea's

Never mind after leaving for 1.5 hrs and still nothing I flashed with flashtools log said all ok. Still not start up plugged into charger and now I get a flashing green led....think it is bricked.....se will get another return to deal with.

I thought bricking your phone
Could only be done with an unlocked bootloader :-S ****y man hope this is not the case
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App

I assume the bootloader was locked after sim unlock.
as I always got sepc and seus saying update available....
i thought if they detect phone and update available.
bootloader was locked......maybe it wasn't......
anyhow I am getting a swap out on Monday as I am business customer thank you t-mobile.

[Q] Verizon Xperia Play Failed to OTA! Please Help!!??

I have the Verizon Xperia Play r800x, the bootloader is unlockoed, the phone is rooted and i removed some system apps.
- i did relock bootloader
- i temp removed root
- the apps i removed were, Sims, Tetris, Visual Voice Mail, Skype Mobile
It lets me download the OTA update, after its finished, it reboots my phone and shows that its downloading. but when it turns on its still at 2.3.2 and a blue box pops up saying Update Failed! So im just wondering how can i fix this problem and update??
Any help is appreciated, thank u
Can't OTA if any pre-installed apps are deleted. That includes games.
The only way is gonna be flashing stock and starting over.
Sent from the best phone ever
Thing is, I've seen a fair few posts with this problem now.
I have this problem, but I removed nothing. I froze, then unfroze.
Thinking it could be a bigger problem than people think?
same deal i got failed update don't know what im doing wrong i have bloatware and same, never messed with it but i do have unlocked bootloader can that be the problem?

If your bootloader is unlocked or any bloatware is moved/removed, its not gonna work, no matter what.
Theres a thread in general and a thread in development on this already, take a look.

Well, it also depends on which unlock method was used. Mine was unlocked by the testpoint method by Alejandrissimo and I was able to OTA update with no problem. But it is a well-known fact that the other methods will soft-brick if you try to update via OTA.

Go to the update thread. On page 51 follow the instructions from Rogue Leader. Did mine last night and have update and root installed.

[Q] Xperia Arc not turning on anymore

I just received an OTA to my Xperia Arc. The update downloaded fine and it started the update OK. During the update (I had the open box icon an 4 dots on screen) the phone just shut down and now it doesn't turn on anymore... Nothing happens if I press power button (it doesn't matter how long) even after removing battery.
Is there anything I can do. Is my phone permanently bricked? I thought they test these OTAs before pushing them out?
Let me guess, your bootloader is unlocked?
If yes, go to the Android Development section and flash the unbrick thing for fota bricked devices.

Flo95, yes. My bootloader is unlocked. I thought the OTAs would still work.
Thank you very much for pointing me towards a solution. Well appreciated!
@Leafhill,
Unfortunately, if you do have your bootloader unlocked, doing an update OTA ends up bricking your phone.
Hello Flo95 i have exactly the same problem of Leafhill i was updating the xperia arc and the phone just shut down and now it doesn't turn on anymore, Nothing happens if I press power button even if i remove the battery. i have flashed around 7 times with other firmwares and still nothing, i read your answer but i don't know hot to use the flash of the Android Development, can you give me some advice plz? thks in advanced
Same problem here. But the bootloader is locked. So how to get it on now?

Shall I update to 4.0.A.2.36?

Just had my xperia play from 02 unlocked to all networks when i put my usb in then press search it turns blue so i dont know if the bootloader has been unlocked? Im wanting to upgrade to software 4.0.A.2.368 but i have read that sony are saying not to upgrade if bootloader is unlocked http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/instructions ?
what shall i do ? please help
If your bootloader is unlocked you can't update over the air, ie. on the phone itself.
You can still install all the updates you want using the computer.
Since you get the blue light you must be unlocked.
As for needing it, not especially. I like the newest things so I did, fixed some bugs I had.

Thank you so if I update using sony erricson software I will be ok ?
I can't really help, but for what it is worth I upgraded my O2 Play when I got it a few days ago. It is locked to O2. The upgrade was painless, but the first boot after the upgrade did take a long time. Just long enough to get you worried.
It should be fine updating using pc companion. Just wondering. How did you unlock your xperia play as I'm thinking about doing the same?

I know someone who has a unlocking shop cost 30 quid I know it's more than some people charge on here but I wanted someone else to do it because if they had bricked it it would have been their responsibility

[Q] My Arc is VERY unhappy ...

Hi all.
On Saturday night my Arc (debranded Rogers, locked BL, rooted with zergrush, running 2.3.4 on firmware .42) was running just fine. We were out at a friend's place and I was calling up photos, doing Web searches, no problem. Then yesterday when I turned the beast on it went into in a bootloop - SE logo, blank screen, SE logo, blank screen ...
I managed to boot into CWM to be able to turn it off, but that was as far as I got (and after a wasted afternoon trying to reflash I can't even get to CWM now).
PCC/SEUS are no help at all - after going through the 'Repair phone' process PCC says there's 'no software available for your phone yet'. I've tried reflashing generic f/ware with both Wotanserver and Flashtool 0.6.8.0; with Flashtool I get the same "Final data verification failed" error as reported recently here with an X10 after 99% complete. And this message from the bottom of the log makes me suspicious Flashtool wants me to change mode, which is just a little tricky when I can't start the phone:
INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode
Current status is the phone boots to the SE logo, then displays an image of an exclamation mark over a phone - one of the least informative images I've seen, unless it represents a tombstone, which seems very possible! - then dies again.
I've looked at a couple of other XDA threads about bricks; the most promising-sounding one was talking about unlocked bootloaders, though, so I didn't try to flash the file they were talking about.
I might feel slightly better if I'd done something - anything! - like an OTA update or whatever to cause this, but all I did was turn the thing off for the night, as I always do.
Please, somebody: help!!
Thanks, in great anticipation.
Didcha tr y reflashing rom or kernel? Also factory reset might help.
Sent from LT18i @ Xda Premium
Thanks, ArmorD.
Just ROM - I can't do anything with the kernel with a locked bootloader, can I?
I'd try a factory reset if I could get into CWM, but I can't. I tried the reset method from here, but the phone still just goes to the SE logo, then the 'tombstone'.
Open to pretty much anything at this stage!
Well, what you can do is i think re-flash it with Update service, it might work than.
Here is the link to update service since you wont find it in SE website.

Bro, just reflash the system
I have just ended up with a boot loop on my arc.. I reflashed and it worked well!

So did I, and it didn't! But thanks anyway.
Further news: trying to eliminate possible causes, I've had the SD card checked (by inserting it in another device). It's quite readable. I didn't really think this problem would have anything to do with the card, but it seemed worth trying.
Well, idk. Sorry bro! Try to flash stock firmware with flashtool! And it might work! Also bricked=phone is not turning on at all! Like u press the power button and nothing is happening. Cheer up man u finally gonna fix it. ;-)

i have encounter tha triangle with ! inside and a phone beside it, it happens when i tried flashing my phone using wotanserver,i want to root my phone and tried to downgrade to .42 taiwan ftf,but the file in wotanserver is maybe damage and did not finish flashing, then i got that "tombstone" icon.
what i did was flash it with uk tft .42,and it restored my arc s,after that i flash it again with .62 taiwan ftf since i live in taiwan, i dont know if this will work on your phone. or maybe you already tried doing it. i just want to share what i happen to encounter. hope you fix your phone.
Untouchable: thanks - I wish I shared your faith!
asderth8000: thanks also. I tried a different firmware version tonight (US generic; previously World; also tried Australian) but same result - Wotan dies with 'ERROR: File write failed' while writing userdata.s08. It feels like that's close to the end of the process, which suggests Wotan and Flashtool are both getting hung up at the same place. Screenshot of Wotan error atatched - hope it gives somebody some ideas.
I appreciate your help, people. Keep them thoughts coming!
lol bro stop using Wotan use Flashtool!!!!!!! lol my faith is beyond the limit. I have bricked & ubricked my cell a couple of times;-)

I got that same error using .42 Taiwan ftf, maybe try UK, it works fine with me although I don't live in UK.
I remember mine was on userdata.07 when an error occured,I thought at first that it was my connection then I tried doing it again and it failed, then I tried the UK version and it goes well. Save your apn settings too.

This package has saved me before, even for things it isn't meant for. Worth trying, won't do any more damage I think.

It's BAAAACK!
First, and most importantly: I have a phone again.
The eventual answer was this thread, suggested by sdk16420. I hadn't tried it before because it was talking about unlocked bootloaders, but I fired it up this morning and ... guess what? I've spent most of the day restoring things, but I'm pretty much there - even rooted again (lost that along the way). The phone says there's an OTA update for .62 ready, but that failed and PCC doesn't believe it exists. Ah well, there's always something ...
Secondly: huge thanks to the XDA community for your support and suggestions. You guys are OK!

PLEASE HELP - Potentially bricked LT18i
slightly different similar problem:
LT18i, 2.3.4 build .62.. or it was!
Wares used: SE Bootloader Lock/Unlocker, Flashtool
Flashtool really should come with a lot more documentation and user guide: I'm a software person, but C++ is my confortable realm!
Managed to flash CWM on there and got it stuck in a bootloop of CWM (trying to install RootXperia.zip): tried many other images, the best I can get is a Sony Ericsson Logo looping.. I guess my SD card is okay.
Can't find an up to date, stock, 2.3.4 build .62 to repair my phone..
Help! A Walkthrough of my problem helps me rinse my degree and this equates to thanks and donations, I am a desperate man right now!
Please hassle me for info, help me help you help me!!
My Arc is Crying too!
PS that r800i ROM didn't work for me!
WHAT I NEED FROM YOU LOVELY PEOPLES:
-A link to the stock ROM or LT18i .62
-noobproof couple of steps to explain flashtool 0.6.8.0
-noobproof steps of how to flash the stock ROM/Kernel back in place
Hope you can help me.. my first flash went entirely squiffy!
Thanks in advance!
Omg plz ignore my noob self, except massive props to doomlord.

[Q] This has stumped everyone so far...

Okay, I have a PLAY 4G that I got from AT&T so it's an 800at. Used it with AT&T for about a month, canceled, got the unlock code form them. Switched to T-Mobile prepaid $50 plan, used it for around 5 months. A few months into T-mobile I rooted it with Super One Click, everything was fine. Now a few months later my signal to T-mobile started cutting in and out 2 days ago. After about an hour or two of losing the network it finally never came back. I did all the standards, resetting, popping battery in and out, etc. Still didn't work with T-mobile, tried SIM in another phone, it works fine. Also got a new SIM from T-Mobile, no difference. Unrooted phone with Super One Click and no difference, did all the resets and battery in and out. Still won't work with or even see T-Mobile. Put an active AT&T SIM in and it works fine! So it seems the phones hardware is fine and the SIM is fine. My last hope is I have a software/firmware problem. One thing that's weird is after the master reset the Home button stopped working and when the joypad is slid out it doesn't switch automatically to games. Phone always says "Emergency Calls Only". Please help, I'm running out of idea's.
I do believe APN's are the problem.
Had to deal with the same thing when I switched to straight talk.
Game stuff and the home button seems like a software issue.
Reflash 2.3.3 stock for AT&T phones. Should be fine after you reset the APNs
Still Stumped
Thank you for your input, I deleted my T-Mobile APN and re-entered it, and it's still not finding the network. I've been wanting to reflash the original firmware back on. Do you know if I have to unlock the bootloader to do that? I was going to try a different ROM but my warranty is still in effect for 6 more months. I'm thinking reflashing the original ROM shouldn't need the bootloader unlocked. I also need to find the original ROM to reflash it with. Is it safe to reflash a generic Xperia PLAY ROM instead of AT&T bloatwares ROM?
I would use flashtool to reflash the AT&T ftf, then just manually input the APN settings for T-Mobile. That should do the trick. IF you try and still a no go I would unroot and soo about a warranty replacement.
You already voided your warranty when you rooted..
Can they know that you had rooted it if you unroot it?

I may be wrong but I thought that if you ftf back to stock they will not necessarily be able to se you have rooted your phone? As its fresh out of the box firmware....

Yes, but only if you bring it in to them or send it away to get fixed

No, flashing an ftf file still holds root and it evident. You can unroot, then reroot if need be,but personally I've never unrooted
Thanks for all the input everyone!
Thank you for all the responses, I will try flashtool this evening and report back what I get. In terms of root, my research has led me to believe that rooting/unrooting is undetectable. But unlocking the bootloader cannot be covered up, Sony has records of all bootloader activity. But I could be wrong, just tossing in my two pennies.
It's fixed!
I used flashtool and reflashed the original software back to the phone and it's good as new again. Thank you everyone for your input! I wish I could tell you what caused the problem, but I'm happy I could at least relay what the fix was.
