Hello all
I seem to be having some problems with tether on MIUI. I've tried barnacle, open garden wifi, Wifi Tether for Root, and the built in MIUI tethering.
When I connect using wifi tether and the built in MIUI and try to go to a website on my laptop it says that the DNS lookup failed.
Any idea how to fix this?
Also, does MIUI tethering show up under tethering for my carrier?
Thanks!
I use wireless tether v 2.0.8 on miui just fine. Whether your carrier knows is open to much debate about custom kernels, deep packet inspection, traffic type, etc, but just try to use tethering responsibly.

It keeps telling me that my tethering has been started but with errors. Just installed the Salvage 1.1 mod and it works pretty good - but I really need the wireless tethering app. Of course before I installed this new ROM it worked but now it does not. What can I do to fix this??
My error log
Activating WiFi interface
failed
Setting ad-hoc mode
failed
Setting essid
failed
Setting Channel
failed
Enabling NAT rules
done
Enabling IP forwarding
done
Enabling access control
done
Tethering now running
done
Oh, and also the Portable Wi-FI hotspot option under my Wireless & Networks settings also says error
Wireless tether won't work with the gingerbread roms. You need to use barnacle tether or the native hotspot. And to fix your wifi, just reboot and it'll be fine. Anytime you run the wireless tether app it'll mess up your wifi, and you have to reboot to fix it.
Is there a way how to start 3g wifi hotspot on my defy running CM7?
download 'wireless tether' from market, works like a charm
it does not support infrastructure mode!
isn't working...
Hi there
I'm using nightly 110722 CM7 and almost everything is working flawless... I just couldn't found the wireless tether that should be available.
So my question is, and I'm sorry if it's a dumb one, the "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" option isn't available for Defy, or this is a "feature" of my Defy with green lens?
On the stock rom I remember that was a 3G Hotspot app, but it never worked.
I had installed Wireless Tether and gave to it root permissions, the software tells me that it is working, but nobody can see or connect to my network.
Thanks.
Use "Barnacle Wifi Tether".
Tested and works fine(Ad hoc).

I had to use another custom rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156855) to make the the hotspot (infrastructure mode) working and I'm very happy with it.

Hello Theles!
To fix your hotspot app you have to set your apn settings correctly.
You can try APN Brasil (https://market.android.com/details?id=br.com.droidbrasil.apnbrasil&feature=search_result).
Then you have to set this parameter on the APN you're using:
APN Type: default,dun
I use wireless tethering from the market...ad hoc is fine for me since i just wanted to share for my ipad2 wifi
Hi
This is an old topic, I know. But now, the CM7 is offering Wireless and USB tether natively, under Wireless Network configurations.
I'm using the Nightly build 110822-1650 by Jordan and it's working like a charm, and, in infrastructure mode with WPA2, etc...
Thanks guys.
I have a Sprint TP2 and have loaded the latest FRX07 build. Under Wireless & Network Settings, there's an option for tethering and portable wifi hotspot .
I have tried this feature and it works great, including on my non-rooted Asus Transformer, which doesn't accept Ad Hoc connections.
I realize most people use third party applications like Barnacle to wifi tether. Barnacle however creates an Ad Hoc, which can be used by the laptop, but not the Transformer.
Is there a reason to avoid the built in feature in Android?

I prefer the built-in wifi hotspot as well - the only reason to avoid it would be if it doesn't work - some have issues when you disable wifi tethering, it won't re-enable at best, and at worst it reboots the phone.
I just tried it and couldn't get it to work, but I have in the past - if it's working for you great! I don't see any reason you can't continue using it. Like you already said, it throws up an actual AP as opposed to an ad-hoc network - which is fantastic.
The wifi tether worked in the past (frx05 I think). The only gotcha is that whenever you went to activate WiFi tethering, you would need to go into the settings and hit OK without changing anything.
The reason for this is that the WiFi driver seems to ignore the settings passed on by the tether app until it's reapplied via hitting OK. The only other thing to note is that AFAIK the power-down code from the WiFi is still missing, so it might create a power drain even after turning off tether(wifi).

Thanks for the responses.
I boot into android and once it finishes initializing, I select the hotspot to on, and it connects to the Transformer. All the apps appear to have access to internet.
Thanks for the tip on the powerdrain. I'll keep an eye on it.
I"m finding it very glitchy with the FRX07 and the default wifi tethering. However, Barnacle wifi tether is working without any problems. I even got a reboot once from using the default tethering. Just thought I let you guys know. Not sure if the 3rd party app will be slower or not though.

Barnacle works, but uses ad-hoc instead of an actual AP. The built-in wifi tethering never really quite worked right...
There's also the XDAndroid wifi tethering app - just like Barnacle, it creates an adhoc network.
Moved into a e4gt from an evo 4g last week. Love the phone but I am having an issue with wireless tether and accessing a vpn at a clients.
My evo worked perfectly with miui's baked in tether. Now with this e4gt I cannot get it to work. Here's what I have tried:
Blazer ROM and sprint hotspot - gets online, but 800 error on vpn
Blazer and wireless tether for root - laptop doesn't see the hotspot
Miui and baked tether - will not get online
Miui and Wireless tether for root - online, 800 error on vpn
Blend ROM and sprint hotspot - online. 800 error on vpn
The vpn does work, I can connect from my home network. Just wondering if there is anyone who has gotten a setup like this working. It seems to me that these hotspots are not allowing either the 1723 or GRE traffic. I have not seen any optoins to pass these through. I have seen the vpn setup on the phone and tried it, but it has not worked either.
Thanks for any help,
DAnono
I've been using ParanoidAndroid on my Note II and recently I realized that wifi tethering does not work. The service indicates it is active but it does not transmit a wireless network name, so no device can connect to it by wifi. Bluetooth tethering works. I have tried 3rd party rooted apps and they indicate that the cannot run because ad-hoc mode cannot be entered. Is there anything I can do like change the kernel or some other mod or app that is able to run tethering? Or do I need to just wait for the developer to provide an updated rom that fixes this?
wifi tethering doesn't work
that's exactly what i'm getting too, error starting ad-hoc mode... hope this gets fixed :crying:
