I just purchased 3 micro-USB cables. I took one with me to test it out on tlmy chine at work, however whenever I plug it into my laptop windows pops up with a message saying unrecognized device, further clucking the popup and seeing what is wrong with it complains that the device is unreadable or may be corrupt. I am wondering if the cables that I bought are "cheap" or if something else is wrong. The stock cable works fine. Is there a specific cable that works with this device? What extra cables have you bought that work with windows, Odin, or normal chargers. Once I get back I can link the cables that I purchased.
These are the cables I purchased. I tested a different one on my desktop (instead of the laptop), and it pops up with the same error message

I let my usb sync cable at work, so I thought I'd use the usb cable I use for on my car charger (expansys / htc-hd7-car-charger-with-usb-micusb-cable-cc-c200-1a-5v-204687/).
While I notice that the phone is charging, it's not starting up Zune, neither am I able to make it work with Chevron7.
While it was already unlocked on the other PC, do you reckon that the error is more due to the fact that I already unlocked it on another PC? Or more that the USB cable for the car charger is somehow not compliant (and can only be used to charge?).
Any insights on this matter? I'll try my other cable on monday at work anyway...
others have reported issues with not using the correct cable, so try using a different one (i.e. the one provided with the phone?).
I don't!
Well it would be a good feature for others don't get me wrong but it wouldn't benefit me. I switched completely from Google to Microsoft services shortly after getting the phone using Windows Live Domains (to use a custom domain instead of @Hotmail).
I would imagine the majority of people's MSN contacts are people they actually know, have phone numbers for and/or have on fb so the link feature works well in this case.
NO, the official HTC car charger cable DOES NOT work as data cable. I guess its even written on the box. I believe that its because they dont want your phone to sync with cigarette lighters
Indeed that cable does not work.
A normal data cable solved the issue. Too bad I had to spend money twice .. thought I'd be clever and buy the car charger coz it came with a micro-usb cable
I purchased this cable off eBay for a spare. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300510528360
When I use this cable the charge function works fine but when I plug it into my PC Windows gives me an error loading the MTP driver and there is an <!> mark on the MTP device in device manager.
When I swap in the stock cable in the same USB port it comes right up without error.
Obviously the difference is the cable but my question is:
Is the cable DEFECTIVE or just incompatible? It is cheap enough where I'll just order another one. I read numerous times where the GTAB 7" cables should be fine ..... or was that for charging only?
Is anyone else having issues with the USB-microUSB cable provided by Samsung?
I have had trouble physically getting it plugged into the charging block and staying seated. However, my biggest issue is connecting it to my laptop. I plug it in, connected to nothing on the micro end and Windows tries to install drivers and eventually errors out. Then I can't connect my phone at all. I had to use my cable from my HTC EVO to get the ODIN connection for rooting working properly.
I seem to remember when my mom got her Samsung Transform, we had similar issues with the USB-microUSB that came from Samsung and we had to use my cable to root her phone too.
What is with Samsung and shotty USB cables?
Hi,
Got my Pixel2XL, love it!
But 1 strange thing, I had the Nexus 6P before and a few cables some that I got in it's package and some that I bought (USB-A to USB-C) all work both for charging and for data transfer (more important for me adb and fastboot) except 1 cable, let's call it ORANGE (since it's color) that only worked for charging.
When I connect my Pixel2XL none of those cables work for data, only for charging! the PC doesn't recognize anything in device manager and the phone doesn't show any option and only charging. that is regardless of the cables or ports and even tried on another PC with same cables. same with USB debugging enabled and disabled.
BUT, when I connect ORANGE it works! now the strange part is that some of my cables are high quality and even pretty good companies like Choetech (if I wrote correctly) and the ORANGE, is some lame cable from Aliexpress.
So I wonder if maybe there are few standards that are supported/not supported on the Pixel2XL? or how do I buy now cables? same was when I tried an older USB-A to MicroUSB with an USB-C adapter.
I couldn't find any official data by Google.
Please assist, Thanks.
No Issues here

Sorry to hear that Bro.
I am using all the same cables I used with my 1 XL and can connect to both my win7 and win 10 machines
Try USB 2.0 port and Spigen cable

Checked now in USB2 and USB3 ports with some of my cables, same
Have you rebooted the Pixel?
When I first got mine and I set it up and I finally wanted to copy over my ringtones, my laptop and PC wouldn't detect the Pixel. It would make a ding sound then go back to Charging. I then rebooted for the first time and then it worked.
Ok, seems that my "high quality" cables wasn't so good.
It seems that 1 of them wasn't choetech and the other that I though came with the Nexus 6P was something I got from the store since in those days they provided the n6p with a different charger (they couldn't deliver US plug chargers than)
after I found the box of the n6p I found the short USB-A to USB-C cable and it works both for data and for charging!
Thanks for all the help and everything, it was my mistake and a big learning curve of why cheap cables won't work.
I still wonder how does the phone know which one is good or not.
My phone isn't detected by my Winodws computers at all.
If I plug it into one of the USB ports directly, the phone starts charging, but that's it.
This is obviously not a driver issue as there's no unknown devices in Windows.
I tried different USB cables, USB-C and MicroUSB-to-USB-C adapters to no effect. Also tried this on two computers to no effect.
There's nothing in the phone's USB-C port (dust, dirt etc) and it's usually covered by the magnetic tip of my Volta charging cable (that's one of those "MagSafe-like" cables where the actual plug breaks off from the cable if you pull it)
If I connect the phone to a USB hub, the hub's ports usually light up when a device is connected. The phone does not trigger the port LED to light up.
Same behavior in System, Recovery and Download mode -> Computer doesn't even notice there's a new device, but device is charging (so apparently it notices there's something connected, just no data transfer)
Is my phone broken? Maybe a hardware problem with the USB-C port? Any advice on how to narrow down my problem?
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you might have.
I had the same problem today but, in my case, it was the cable's connector.
Since you have multiple cables, it's unlikely they are the issue but it would be proof if you were able to check them with a different device. Also, ensure they aren't charge-only cables (I have a few of those; they lack data pins so devices don't slow-charge when they could rapid-charge instead).
You checked in download mode, so that eliminates configuration issues with Android.
That's all I got; it does appear to be the phone's connector or the USB interface.
A hail Mary would be to stick a 2PS6IMG.zip onto an SD card and RUU it in case firmware is the problem.
I'm pretty sure my cables could be used for data transfer as well. I'll try to find a colleague with USB c phone to try that as well. (family has all iPhones and most of my regular meet friends have phones from the stone age)
The firmware thing could be hard to do. Apparently you can't modify the Cid from within the phone anymore (setprop ro.cid doesn't do anything like it did on old HTC phones, despite having S-OFFed the phone) and T-MOB101 (T-mobile - the German parent of all those other clones) firmware is a rare sight.
