ok people, as some of you may have read i have been having an ongoing issue with my sprint vvm. i have done a lot of leg work searching for a fix and have found the culprit. if you're having problems with vvm not coming through, it is likely not ROM issue or a problem with sprint...it is an sms app that you have installed other than the stock sms. for me the culprit was Go SMS Pro.
thanks to this thread post here for the fix that worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15646064&postcount=1
as stated in the post, Go SMS has different settings. so here is what i did exactly and you should hopefully be able to duplicate and get the fix as well.
1) uninstall Go SMS Pro (or other SMS program you are using other than stock)
2) Go to the Voicemail .apk via Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Select the All tab > scroll to Voicemail
3) Force stop & Clear Data for the Voicemail .apk
4) Go and update your Profile (settings > about phone > system updates > update profile
5) Open the Voicemail app and it should update provisional status.
6) Let it sit for a minute and pending messages may download on their own.
7) Call your phone and send a test voice message.
8) re-install Go Sms Pro from the Market, but in the setup where it asks if you want to disable all other sms related apps, don't check that (this is the specific problem).
9) go into the stock SMS program and disable notifications from within it, if you don't want dual notifications.
I was wondering what the hell these texts were. I use handcent, and I put the default SMS app on frozen with titanium backup. I did what you said with the voicemail though, so I'll just hope it works.

I know with HTC phones freezing/un-installing the stock SMS app borked MMS
Really? Well I'll unfreeze it, seeing if that works because I just got these messages 3 times in a row, then throughout all of today. I'll see if defrosting the stock SMS will work.
Thanks, very helpful

It worked, thanks added to your meter
glad this is working for you guys.
Thank you for the posting ...
Still having the issue even though I've tried installing the updated VVM.apk floating around here and force stopping.clearing data. I'm using Frankenstein 5.1 rom on EL29 modem with NO alternate SMS apps (like Handcent or Go). Additionally, I can't update profile/PRL either (errors out). Is is possible that these are related? Any ideas?

I am running SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0.2 (Malanga)
It is nothing short of awsome. I just noticed that I am recieving two of the same messages sent to (phone#)@messaging.sprintpcs.com
I think this is SMS ... (not sure) any ideas? Messages sent from another phone come through correctly.
I also use handcent and it is also showing a duplicate message.
Can the stock messaging be removed?
I did install Handcent via CW from a .zip file from a midNIGHT ROM extras folderand it works perfectly, but i wonder if it has something to do with it.
Go into the stock messenger app:
Goto menu/settings and uncheck
1. Notifications
2. Receive automatically
3. and any other boxes that are checked..
And no if you remove the stock messaging apps it will break your mms, from downloading/sending...
Unfortunately each time I try to post this question, I'm getting the following error - even though there are no links. The details of my problem, therefore, may be spread across several comments in this thread as I attempt to include them all.
Code:

I flashed SyndicateRom Frozen 1.2 yesterday, and am LOVING it so far! Besides a known bug with the missed call info displayed on the glass lock screen, I have only one problem with my phone right now.
While getting all my apps reinstalled & set back up, I decided on a whim to install Google Voice. During the install wizard apparently it took over my phone. I thought I'd cancelled out in time, but when sending a text msg this morning a friend told me it was showing up w/ my GV number. I removed GV, and through their website I deactivated their voicemail.
So now when I text, it shows my correct number. I'm making & receiving calls ok. But when an incoming call goes to voicemail, the Visual Voicemail app never notifies me of a voicemail, and instead I get a weird text msg like this:
(to be continued)
Wow, 5 minute posting limit imposed too. this is fun!
/ / ANDROID : < caller's phone # > has sent you a Sprint Voice Message. Call 408 - 970 - 0000 to listen. MMSN,15ec6a1b4,1fc6,V69A / tC1Nqr / / CM
(spaces added to foil the system from thinking I'm posting a URL)
(to be continued)
(hopefully I can get the rest in this time)
That last part after the MMSN changes each time.
I'm able to press/hold 1 to access my voicemail, but when I go into the VM app, there's nothing there.
I tried restoring from TitaniumBackup - that brought a couple of my old voicemails back, but still nothing new, and I still get the text messages.
I tried sending a voicemail to activate @ vvm.sprint.com through the voicemail app - that results in a return text message saying:
/ / ANDROID : * @ vvm . coremobility . com has sent you a Sprint Voice Message... yada yada yada
I've also seen texts like this:
/ / ANDROID : Provisioning successful CFGv320c.0=07cbKhXuKph / / CM
I also tried installing a 5.1.0.52 apk (can't locate the URL I eventually tracked down at the moment).
Still nothing.
I just spent an hour on a support chat w/ Sprint. We tried *38, *720; rebooting more times than I can count, and now I'm at the point where he's reset "something" and it's supposedly going to start working for me in the next hour. Call me a skeptic.
Is it something on Google's end? Sprint's? My phone? Has anybody else worked through this before? I just want my vm app to work like it always has.
TIA!
I once again found the URL where I downloaded the 5.1.0.52 apk:
https://upgradeserver.coremobility.com/prod/sprint/2.1/5.1.0.52/vtt-sprint.apk
(and woohoo, looks like I can post URLs now)
Any ideas on this?
Using Titanium I uninstalled voicemail, rebooted, reinstalled, and am still getting the text messages.
Would reflashing be an option? I hate to do it since I finally have everything set up just the way I like - but I need to get this fixed.

I don't think the issue has to do with google voice. I am having the same issue with SFR 1.2 and I never installed GV. I have tried clearing data, I have tried to reactivate my VVM, I have tried restoring a titanium backup as well.
Everything in VVM seems to work, but it never receives messages.
If you find a fix, post it here so those of us having the issue can get it working too.
EDIT: I figured out my issue was actually with Handcent. The VVM application requires messages to be passed from the stock SMS application to DL VVM messages. If you have handcent and are using 3.9.5 go into settings>default applications> and check "disabled" and your VVM will start working again. Hope this helps someone other than me.

Interesting... I've always used Handcent (since my Hero days). I vaguely remember setting it to "All (SMS & MMS)". I changed it back to "Disable" and will see what happens. So far none of the voicemails on the system are downloading (when I dial in it tells me there are 9 new messages). I don't have a landline to leave a test message, so it'll be a while before I can get somebody to call me to test.
Thanks for the past - it would be great if that's all it takes to fix it! After changing this setting, you're no longer getting those strange text messages either?
I can't remeber where it is, but on google.com/voice ,log into your account, there is a setting that can be changed, also a # to dial, I wish I could remeber, its #?? To disable google voice, but that's probably not your problem, I bet its a setting on gvoice website...

It was *38 to disable.
It looks like changing that setting in Handcent referenced above has corrected the problem - I have voicemail working again w/o those annoying text messages! Thanks for your help!
Handcent setting IS the problem!!!

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! This problem has been driving me insane for five days. Handcent 3.9.7 was the culprit on my Samsung Epic 4G as well. After reading your post, went to Settings --> Application Settings --> Default Messaging application and switched to "Disable", now Voice Mail icon shows up no problem.
Thank you so much for posting this fix!

I've been having this problem since the GB update on my Evo Shift. This solution works!
Hey guys. is there a way to set MMS messages to autodownload? I don't want to push download each time i get a picture. I'd rather have them waiting, similar to the iphone. I've tried to figure this out in the stock messenger, handcent and goSMS but couldn't figure this out on any of them.
Can anyone help me out?
If you're using a sense based rom, start the messaging app and then select Menu-Settings-multimedia messages and then place a checkmark in the box next to auto retrieve. I'm using the Synergy rom at the moment so the wording could be a little different depending on what rom you're using.

In handcent, go into the settings > retrieve > then select the auto download.

I will ....thank him too ...by the way I did as you asked about go sms pro ..but it did deactivate the voicemail again ..bc I made the regular text app and go sms pro not to notify me ..so when I tested it I didn't know that there is a message sent to me ..so I think I will stay with the regular texting even if I don't like it ..hoping to find a way later ...thank you again
Having the same problem. I'm using Frankenstein 5.1 with EL29 Modem and no alternate SMS apps (like Go or Handcent) just the stock MMS that came with Frankenstein. I can;t get the voice mail to work nor will the phone update profile/PRL. I had this setup before (this is a replacement from Sprint/Assurion) with none of these problems. Any ideas?
There are two people (at least) that I can't send text messages to. One is on AT&T and one is on Sprint so their carrier isn't the issue. And it doesn't matter which sms app I use.
When I use Chomp I get this result: "Unfortunately, chomp SMS has stopped."
When I use the stock messaging app I get this result: "Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped."
There is no existing thread with these people and their cell phone numbers are valid. When they send me texts everything looks normal on their end but I don't get the message.
I am bone dry stock.
Any ideas? This is very annoying and I probably will have the same problem with other people, I just haven't discovered it yet.
I've never heard of this issue before

I don't think so. How do I check? When I long press their names in the contact list I see an option to "add to reject list" which suggests they aren't blocked. How else can I check?
I don't think I've blocked anyone. Is there a way to check everyone I've blocked? And on a related note, what happens when I add someone to the reject list? If they call me will they go straight to voicemail or what?

Are you opposed to rooting and trying out a ROM? I honestly don't know what's going on, but if it's crashing your sms programs, it sounds to me somehow software or settings related (but I've never seen anything that could do that). Since it's most-likely software related, I'd bet a fresh install would solve it.
But that being said, it's a really bizarre thing to have happened.
I'd try erasing the problem contacts and re-adding them before going too far into it. Very odd problem though, thats for sure!
It does not sound like you have anyone Blocked / Rejected. Did you install any apps before the issue started?

Honestly, I have never heard of this before. Usually, I would never want to bother sprint tech, but I would go show them and see what they think. That is very odd. Have you tried a factory reset? (Backup everything first)
------------------------
Sprint Galaxy S3 "Supernexus"
Whiplashh Rom
Look it up.
So I'm in a major bind. I realized that the problem was for anyone who I didn't already have a sms thread with. If I send/receive text messages with someone that has an existing thread, it works fine. If they don't have a thread send/receive text fails as I described.
I tried uninstalling Chomp SMS and that didn't help. So I figured there might be some corruption in my text message store so I backed up my sms & mms and then deleted everything. Now I can't send/receive text messages from ANYONE and when I try to restore my text messages it fails. I backed up with two different apps to be safe and they both failed.
At this point it seems like the only option is a factory reset. Does anyone have another suggestion to fix this?
Before doing a factory reset I'd like to back everything up but I'm not rooted yet and to make matters worse I'm on vacation with my Mac rather than my Windows laptop -- so rooting is not possible. I don't want to do a factory reset and lose everything but I can't be away for this many days without the capability to send/receive text messages. Especially since people who are texting me have no idea I'm not getting their texts. FML
Turn on Mobile Data. Update Profile & PRL, Turn off your mobile data.
Backup export your contacts list. should be like a
Contacts.VCF file.
And backup your SMS messages if possible
Go into applications / All Applications > Wipe Data for both messaging apps + Wipe Contacts list.
Turn off your sync for contacts.
Reboot your device.
Open up both messaging apps and tweak / change what ever you need in the settings for both applications.
Turn on your data and reset LTE/CMDA CMDA/EVDO back and forth once
Reboot your phone.
Import your contacts list.
Re-sync your contacts.
Then try messaging them.
If that doesn't work then I have no clue what'll help with your issue being non-rooted.

I tried this, it didn't work.
Now I have another problem. When I try to sync my contacts, after restoring them from the backup, I'm getting an error. The error says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Maybe it will be back shortly but in my experience with a similar problem with calendar syncing a couple years back, this is not so easy to fix.
Any suggestions?
Your firmware and base is updated to MD4 right?
EDIT:
Have you tried Go SMS Pro Using this method?
Download from Google play
Open application and go to settings
Click Advanced Tab.
Click MMS Settings
Checkmark Fill APN Configuration Manually.
Code:
MMSC
http://mms.sprintpcs.com
MMS Proxy
68.28.31.7
MMS Port
80
Force Close application, and then reboot it, and now try sending something SMS or MMS.
Yes, I'm on MD4.
I actually think MD4 may have something to do with this. The first time I noticed the problem was right around the time I installed MD4. It was within a day, either right before or right after. For some reason Sprint pushed MD4 to may waaaaay after everyone else got it which is why I just recently got it.
I tried your Go SMS Pro technique but got not joy. The stock messaging app still crashes. Go SMS doesn't crash when I send messages but nothing is actually sent. And whenever someone sends me text messages I still don't get them.
