Not sure I understand this. What exactly in the boot.img do you want to change?
I think he might mean the splash screen or boot animation.
If the above is the case, you have to flash it.
I mean boot animation

It depends where you got the animation from. Some are flashable thru recovery, and some you just copy and replace the original zip in /system/customize/resource/ with the new one. It all depends on who made or packaged the animation. If you open the animation zip file and it has a folder named meta-inf then it is flashable, if it has a desc.txt file inside you have to copy and paste it.

Hello, can you tell me where I can find the files for my custom boot up? I installed one using MIUI's Theme Manager, so I'm not sure where I would find it
For AOSP it is in system\media, for sense it is here, system\customize\resource.
And what if I wanted to change the boot animation on the stock rom (rooted)

Rename the old file VZW_bootanimation.zip to .zip.bak
Use android commander to push the file back in - disregard any memory errors. Rename bootanimation to VZW_bootanimation.zip

Ok, I got the new Bionic animation working, but it also has sound...how can I get the sound to work? Running stock rooted if that makes a difference.

It would be awesome if people started posting custom boot animations we could flash from recovery.
Wish I had the time and know-how to do it.

Could one be flashed by zip through clockwork with a locked bootloader?

It would just be easier to replace one using Root Explorer, but yes you can.

I don't see any files in that folder other than a folder for audio.

is it a stock rom?
Then place bootanimation.zip (from what animation you want) on /system/media with rootexplorer (need root for that)
Does it have to be root explorer? Just tried with es file manager and it says failed when copying or trying to delete the current boot animation .zip? Thanks

Yes use root explorer and and when you want to make changes just click the button at the top mount r/w so it changes to mount r/o

Just used ES File Explorer and put the bootanimation.zip file in the /system/media folder and it works great! Thanks!
Yep me too. Hadn't enabled root explorer and mount option in es file explorer settings. So much better. Got the nexus boot and no more ugly o2 splash screen. Cheers all

I use ROM Toolbox to change my boot animation, its simple and fast, and there are a bunch to choose from, and you dont have to have BL unlocked.
Sorry to bump this again guys. Boot animation changed all good, just I have an o2 splash screen on power off. Any quick easy way to get rid of this?

No to edit splash, you need to decompile kernel and change certain files. You do for the boot splash anyway. I don't have a shutdown splash, maybe it's to do with your o2 branded rom, you could always flash a generic rom.

Thought it might be cheers. The o2 splash at startup was included in the boot animation so was able to get rid of that.

System/media

Pretty sure the stock boot animation isnt in bootanimation.zip either its like a qmg file or something.
Yeah in the system media folder right ?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
So should I remove the qmg file and push bootanimation.zip via root explorer or is there another way? Just want the glowing S from Calks rom as my bootanimation. Instead of sprint to bright and loud at night
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Are you on a stock kernel? You need a custom kernel that supports boot animation zips.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I'm on stock rom its rooted with agat

Hmm no answer yet so bumping this question
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Sorry been really busy. You have agats kernel you can push the boot animation into system media. U may need to rename it to sanim.zip

If you got this working with your stock/agat, please let me know as I want to change the boot anim on my GF's phone as well..
Thanks
Boot animation support is built into the kernel. So it doesn't matter what rom your on. You can use rom toolbox to change your boot animation and then go into system/media and see what it's named. Either bootanimation.zip or sanim.zip . Then after that you can push any boot animation into the system/media.

If you have a kernel that supports it like Agat or any other supportive kernel it will work all you gots to do is flash one of these bootanimation zip from the link provided in the bottom. Flash the bootanimation zip from recovery and after booting up replace it with the one you want to use go to system/media folder and replace reboot enjoy.. Ok, so here's my question. Does any one have a link for the CM9 boot animation zip? Or can i pull it out of the zipped ROM. (i haven't downloaded it) and i have already changed the files in system/bin (samsungani.bak and bootanimation to samsungani)
Thanks in advance

It's pretty easy to do. I just downloaded the N5 version, and using Root Explorer renamed it to bootanimation.zip, moved it to /system/media, set the permissions and it works fine.
Looks pretty good as well.

could you elaborate a bit more please. Are you running a aosp or tw rom? Thanks.
Worked perfectly for me.

same here, using es file explorer i allowed permissions and downloaded the zip file. I changed the zip file to bootanimation.zip and moved it to system/media and then changed the permissions back. Basically toggling es file explorer off so that it doesn't have write permissions and rebooted. The animation looks great. Now that i know how to do this i want to find more to try out lol.
Now if we can figure out how to change the tmobile power down animation.
I modified that boot ani for the note 3 and added an extra animation within it. Runs smooth. Try this out

You just need to change the FPS in the desc.txt file from 10 to 15 and save and re-zip it up using store compression.
I changed the desc.txt file from 10 to 15 frames per seconds so it works on faster booting phones. If you need it faster, I can change it to 20 just let me know. http://d-h.st/1m1
Flashable zip or push it to system?
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda premium
Push it to system\media. If you dont feel comfortable doing that, then you can download the app "Boot Animations" from the play store. Select local and browse for the zip file and then click on it and you should have the option for install.
Looks awesome,
I am running wicked 5, it's boot is using qmg, how do I install this?
thank you in advance
What I had to do to deactivate the qmg from being the boot animation was download and install this boot animation from kevinrocksman:
http://goo.im/devs/kevinrocksman/Bootanimations/Note3/Sprint/Flashable/BiosFlashable.zip
This install is an aroma installer so you will install it through recovery. No need to clear cache or dalvik. I know this isn't the boot animation you want, but it does something to deactivate the qmg boot. So once this is done and you reboot, you should be able to copy your bootanimation to system\media. Just make sure the name of the file is bootanimation.zip and set the permissions to (rw-r-r-) and reboot. Should work now.
