Vlingo! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Oh my goodness...I thought these apps were jokes. I was reading this article talking about how we can get sht close to the new iPhone 4S features and Siri is one thing I didn't really look into so I got Vlingo. This sht is crazy! I wanted to try and throw it a curve ball by texting my friend by saying his last name (his last name isnt easy to spell. It's Arceneaux) and it actually got it. My mind is all messed up right now. If you ain't check it out, check it out.

Comes preinstalled....been out for a while I did beta test it.....glad you found it.

I'm glad you said that.I could've sworn it came pre installed but before I went to go download it, I checked my app drawer and it wasn't there.

It's preinstalled..the word "Vlingo" is not in the app draw...its under "voice talk" and "voice command"..theres even a widget for it...i use it all the time ;-)

Ohhh haha I knew I saw it somewhere. This phone is amazing. Anything else i should know about?

You can change the text it says. Like when you say "hi galaxy" it normally says "what would you like to do?" I changed it to say "what do you want *****?"

2 Vlingo's ? Samsung and Vlingo have a partnership and Vlingo installed on Samsung phones. There is one in the market also which you don't need unless you do not have a Samsung phone. Is that what you meant?

What about the google voice search, both come with phone whitch one is better

There's Voice Command and Voice Talk on the phone. Kind of seem to do the same thing.

they both do the same thing. I prefer Vlingo as it seems to understand what I am saying better.

Actually, there is a difference. Voice talk is meant to be a completely hands-free experience, hence the ability to start voice recognition with a worded command.
Voice command has one added feature over voice talk, the ability to launch apps.
Why isn't this included in voice talk? I don't know, but I assume it's because you'll be using voice talk in hands-free environments (I.e. driving), so it would be counter-intuitive to launch something that requires hands. That's where the hand-dependent voice command app comes in. (Though you can have voice command start listening once the app is opened, but still requires a finger tap afterwards)
And remember, hitting the menu button in each app lets you switch between the two.

Cant seem to get the version that came on the phone to read messages. The one in the market will read incoming messages to you.

I've been playing around with Vlingo on my E4GT after reading this thread, and while it's pretty cool, it's not quite up yet to what I've seen on the Siri demo videos.
Just for fun, download the Vlingo app from the market and ask it "what is an iPhone?".

Speak to it seems more similar, but theoretically less capable than vlingo, I think maybe? Not sure.

Well, my phone ****ted on me hard on my way to work. Straight up hurt my feelings. Turned off and now it won't turn on at all. No more vlingo for me :'(

New Dragon Go! Voice Recognition App

I just saw articles about this new software and it looks promising. Nuance has been doing voice recognition for a long time so perhaps they have finally brought Siri like functionality to Android.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...-a-stellar-voice-recognition-app-for-android/
Only problem is that as of now, it can't be found in the market on our phones and the market says our phone is not compatible when I search from a computer. Does anyone know how to get the .apk? I'm sure the market will allow us to download it soon but I don't like waiting.
Also, has anyone tried this on another phone yet? Any feedback?
The apk can be found in the comments in your link
Thanks. Didn't realize it was already there.
Here is the link if anyone is interested in trying it out. I'll report back my experiences once I use it for a while...

Where is the money?
As a Dragon user on the PC I can tell you that Nuance isn't known for giving things away or doing anything for cheap. Since they aren't charging for this app, at least not yet, makes me wonder where the money is.

Will Google Voice search have full app launch and everything like s voice?

I saw a demo online comparing s voice to google voice search, and of coarse for 95% of the things google won no contest, but I was surprised that s voice could say update twitter and give a message and work, where google could not do this at all yet. Just wondering if they are planning on it being able to do basically everything the other can but better?
You mean Google Now? I believe it comes with every phone/tablet that has JB. If we get JB on the S3 then we will get Google Now, unless they disable it so we become stuck with garbage S Voice.

Yes this is what I meant. Again if you look online for demos one of them shows that it works well, but still does not have full control or access to all apps and such, it literally gives an error that the feature is not working yet. I can only assume since it gives that actual error that they are planning on it having this ability soon, which makes since.

That feature doesn't appear to be available on any phone just yet, it just brings up a google search.
I dunno, I tried Google now and really didn't find it all that great. I couldn't launch apps or dictate what I want done on the app. s voice has been pretty solid for me.

Judging from the recent i9300 international JB leak, it looks like we will have access to both S-Voice and Google Now. So for those who prefer one over the other, it looks like SGS3 users will be able to use either which is good news. I was hoping that Samsung wouldn't remove Google Now from the JB rom when it comes out and so far looks good
I kinda hope they just put the ability to control apps in Google Now, I would not want to have to swap from one to the other just to ask a question, then swap to the other to launch an app. Might as well just launch it manually if your gonna have to do that each time. S Voice is only better for this one thing, ask it anything that requires it to look on the web for the answer and its slow as hell, Google Now is the best for this now, better than siri, so add in the app control and its the king.
I hope with the official JB release coming out soon we will find out for certain if Google Now will have full app controls like s voice.
S voice six because its developed by vlingo who IMO was the worst assistant app... I have the note with paranoid android 4.1.1 and Google now is awesome..until someone ports it to your device I recommend assistant from the Google play market

Picked up my Note 2 today. Have some questions and concerns

I picked up my Note 2 today at a local sprint store. They were only given 5 and once I got mine they had 2 left. This was 20 minutes after they opened.
I have a couple questions and concerns reuarding the phone that im hoping someone can help me answer.
1. Is there a way to stop the volume from decreasing whenever i plug it into my car? The volume will always go down to half and its kind of annoying.
2. When using the keyboard to type messages, if i spell a word wrong and hit space it wont autocorrect it. Is this a feature Samsung left out? Im so used to it on my evo, i feel like i have to keep looking at what im writing to make sure i dont misspell something.
3. If im in the browser and zoom in on something it wont adjust to fit the page like the HTC EVO did. Is this also something samsung didnt include?
The main concern I have with the phone is the 3g data speeds. I am coming from the original Evo 4g and although Sprint isnt known to have the greatest speeds I never had a problem downloading an application. Today it took an hour to download myfitnesspal from the play store. I tested the speeds on speedtest.net and I was getting 33kbps down and 5kbps up. My girlfriend who also has an Original EVO 4g was getting 300kbps down and 170kbps up. Still not the greatest speed but alot better than what i was getting on the Note 2. Both phones were in the same spot and the same time. I did the test a number of times and always had the same outcome.
Thanks everyone. So far I am loving this phone and both the hardware and software are great!!

That is due to one of the headphone options to limit the intensity of volume so it doesn't damage your ears. You'll find the option it in the sound settings, after you disable it in won't change your volume to half anymore.

I use the voice input constantly form the keyboard when I am emailing and texting, so when this phone "hid" the mic button and you have to press 3 buttons to get to it, I wasnt happy.... So I downloaded the Jellybean Keyboard and its awesome!!!I was having a fit last night with the browser when everytime I scroll, it zooms in, thought I was gonna throw up... so I switched to Google Chrome Browser.

I have a new Note 2, and I'm also new to Android, so I've been posting different things I encounter with the phone.
My experience with the keyboard is one of the things I posted, copied in here.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The default Samsung keyboard on the Galaxy Note 2 is a sleeper.
Samsung included Swiftkey Flow, which allows gesture-based typing, like Swype. The more I use it the more I like it, and it has auto-suggest and auto-correct.
The number row at the top is pretty great, too, the large screen allows it all to fit. The auto-suggestions appear above the number row.
Samsung also included the handwriting keyboard, for the S-Pen. The handwriting recognition works really well, and I'm coming up to speed with it.
The main points to remember about the keyboards are these:
- auto-suggest and auto-correct function in both tapping and handwriting modes.
- in tapping mode the transition between tapping and gesturing is seamless, but if you try to use both modes within a word a space is automatically inserted.
- in tapping mode auto-correct functions only while using gestures. If you're tapping and not gesturing you have to choose among the suggestions instead of relying on auto-correct. I'm learning the cases where it's important to me to have auto-correct do its thing, like when typing "I'm". If I type it in in tapping mode, it ends up as "Im" unless I choose the auto-suggestion with the apostrophe. It's better instead to use gesture mode for "I'm" as the auto-correct will do the right thing and use the apostrophe. As I mentioned, the transition from tapping to gesturing is seamless.
- quick-punctuation and quick-capitalization functions are missing
completely. People who don't use gestures and people who've never spent time with an IOS keyboard ( and many who have ) don't get this.
I am starting to really like this keyboard. My only real gripes are the lack of auto-correct in tapping mode and the lack of quick-capitalization and quick-punctuation, but they are mitigated by long-presses.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Someone else mentioned in the thread the Jelly Bean Keyboard, and it really is an excellent keyboard, I discovered it with my Galaxy S3 and initially installed it on the Note 2. But I'm not willing to give up the handwriting recognition, so back to the stock keyboard I went.
The stock keyboard doesn't do everything, but it has its good points.
Cheers,
-John

I also came from the Evo4G, and the auto adjust feature you speak of is a HTC Sense feature. I noticed this early on after using others phones and tablets. Although a small feature for those that have had it and lost it we all know how big of a thing it really is. Still don't know why Google hasn't implemented this within current builds of Android yet.

Can you explain what Apple has to do with it, references? AFAIK, HTML can be rendered any which way the (User Agent, that is) browser wants - that's the point of markup language.

Text/browser reflow after zooming(what the op is refering to on HTC phones...similar to word wrapping in excel lol) is patented by Apple. Samsung removed it from devices last year. HTC will eventually do so as well.
Its been all over the web for nearly 2 years...you are a smart guy you can find it
The only way to get it to work on samsung phones is to, after zooming in to the size that you want, you have to double tap the screen an additional time to enable text reflow.

Hmm, that'd contradict TechRadar.com's review [/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-note-2-1093688/review/5#articleContent]:You can have the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 reformat pages when you zoom in but it doesn't do this by default, which is slightly annoying.
In fact, you have to go into the advanced section of the settings menu to dig this little gem out, which we weren't overly impressed with having to do.
Lots of people won't be aware of this - and that could lead to a second rate experience for no reason at all.

Swype with Google Voice....

Hi
Anyone know how to tell Swype Beta to use google voice instead of the fire "Dragon Dictate" as Jellybean has offline voice typing and is far superior.
Just a shame the stock samsung keyboard with its swipe isnt as good.
Anyway, so far only way Ive found by leaving swype as default is to pull down notification bar when Im about to do voice typing and just select google voice from the input method.
I would just prefer to press the mic button though...
Thanks

Swype is not open source correct?
If not, could one develop an app that overlaps the voice button on Swype provides that launches Google Voice instead?

If one likes Swype but HATES the terrible predictive speech recognition of Dragon Go, yes it does matter.
That being said, I guess we can't do it, so thanks to the poster who brought Kii to our attention; it'll do, though it's not as fluid as Swype for keyboard swyping.
Temporary Solution
Sorry that I'm a little late getting in on this thread, but I have a temp solve.
(Disclaimer ... for anyone interested: I, too, use Swype, religiously, because it is way faster than any other gesturing keyboard in Android - I type a lot of text, using a Note 2, and Swype is constantly helping me break all my speed records. Dragon, however, is a pain, for one, because it is not as stable as Google Voice, often giving me grief when connectivity is sporadic; but also because the software is slightly more bloated than Google Voice, causing the annoying "fade in" graphical interface which drags down on its listening response time. This lag is noticeable when you are "Swyping" at 80 words a minute when transitioning to speaking texts suddenly takes 4 times as long as "Swyping.")
Sooooo...
A temporary solution (despite the extra key presses) is to...
1) Long press on the text window
2) Select "Full Editor" from the pop up menu
3) Tap the "Google Mic" icon
And that's pretty much it. It is, unfortunately, an annoying solution, but for me, it's working faster than Dragon on the average. Hope that helps someone, particularly JoeyDVDZ

Not having Google Voice with Swype finally bothered me enough that I have been working on such a thing! I have a proof-of-concept working fairly well on my phone (Nexus 4), and now I'd like to find someone with a rooted S3 willing to try it out there. It requires root to be able to inject keystrokes into an app. If you have a rooted S3, please shoot me a message at [email protected], and I'll discuss it with you some more.
(I've posted a similar message in the S4 section. Since these are two of the most popular devices, I'd like to see if, and how well, it works on them before pursuing it further.)

Yes, it's built in to my Nexus 4, but it's not as good as Swype at getting the word I want. I've tried them all, and I always end up coming back to Swype. Google's voice typing is better than Dragon Dictate, though, so this is the best of both.

Anyway, so far only way ive found by leaving swype as default is to pull down notification bar when im about to do voice typing and just select google voice from the input method.
I would just prefer to press the mic button though...
Thanks

there is way but you must be rooted and have xposed installer installed, there will be this app called googleofflinevoice. Download it and restart then just double click on the dragon go icon and google voice will appear. Have fun!

Do YOU use Google Now?

Hey guys.
Just out of curiosity, do you use Google Now? And if you do... What do you use it for?
I have never once used Google Now. I have never had a time where I needed to use it. Perhaps some of you could potentially give me some ideas by stating why or why don't you use it?
Thank you!! - MBQ
(If this thread takes off, I'll make a poll)
I haven't used it for anything specific either besides showing it off to my iPhone user friend. It beats her siri 9/10 times when we were looking for specific answers.

I like being able to get to the weather quickly or being able to track sports scores easily. So I use it everyday. I just set my home key long press action to open voice commands and I love it! When paired with mic'ed head phones it's powerful.

Yeah I use it all the time, at least once a day. My most common use is to find out the weather, I usually ask if it is raining outside before I ever get out of bed. I have the iPad too so I've gotten to pit Now vs Siri, and like everyone else's results: Now understands me better, is faster, and has access to much more information than Siri. Probably my second most common use is asking about movies - running time, cast, etc. Another thing I love about now is it brings up my tracking info for stuff I buy on Amazon. If I lived in a high traffic area I would definitely get some use out of the traffic (delay) feature.
My one complaint right now is that it doesn't know or recognize SEC teams.

I think that Google Now has full potential only in 'Merica and Great Britain. Maybe Germany. It's a great tool, but not useful in most conutries because it is not supported at all. I wish in Croatia got like 50% of it, In my case, I use only the search
Thanks for your guys' input. I didn't realize how handy it is!! should I start a poll?

i use google voice (the siri stomper) all the time but i have google now turned off. im not busy enough or mobile enough for it to be useful to me right now
I use it for weather, setting dates, searching for apps(326), definitions, finding places to hangout at, and directions back home.

Nope. Hardly used it to begin with, and since I disabled it the partial wakelocks caused by NetworkLocationLocator have dropped significantly.

I see it as a battery hog, had that bad impression back during 4.1, not sure whether it changed.....
NO!!
My understanging: useless feature.

The search part of it I use quite regularly.
It's pretty fast to press home and slide up to do a search regardless of which app you have open.

No, I tried but couldn't get used to that and a lot of features are made to us citizes, so, I have it disable.
Hi,
I use Google Now quite often. Switching to Google Now from anywhere in the phone swiping up on the home button is extremely nifty. The way I have it set up, it usually displays weather and transit information for nearby transit stops, which lets me know when I should leave home to catch the bus & whether I should be taking my umbrella with me or not.
Also, if you set it up correctly, if I have looked up a restaurant on Google Maps on my laptop, when I leave home and switch on Google Now, it automatically opens up direction/navigation to the restaurant (or any other location you search for). I was surprised the first few times it happened, but now I love this feature.
Another, favorite feature is if you have an appointment in your Google Calendar, with the exact address mentioned in the location of the appointment, Google Now just pings me indicating that its time I leave from wherever I am, so I can make it to my appointment in time, and of course, it tells me what my next appointment is and also transit details.
I also use Google Now to set quick reminders for example: Google set a reminder in 20 minutes "Take the beer out of the freezer" and Google sets an alarm for 20 minutes for now with the text as "Take the beer out of the freezer"! Perfect-o!
Besides, always use it for simple searches and conversions: how much is 20 pounds in kilograms, etc.
Last, but not least, Google! Open "App Name" launches whatever app you select.
All the time to keep track on weather sports, location, activity, and currency when I travel abroad
