[Q] Unlocking bootloader is it worth it at the moment?? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
ever since CM 7 is out for Xperia arc i've been wondering if i should unlock bootloader and start putting custom ROMs on my Arc but i'm hesitating
i don't know if it's worth it to unlock bootloader at the moment or not...
can anyone who unlock the bootloader tell me what he like about it and
what he is missing from stock ROM ? and is there better ROM then CM7 for Xperia arc ?

Hi.
It's worth it whether you want to put custom ROMs on or not as it's handy for a variety of things such as flashing Pre-rooted ROMS, Themes or Tweaks, or clearing caches and battery stats.
Do it, it's easy and if you screw up along the line there are fixes here.

By SEARCHING, then you would have found this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133650
That guide doesn't mention recovery at all.
At the moment, to use recovery, you need to use Fastboot which is only compatible with handsets that can have their bootloaders unlocked - possibly handsets that have already had bootloaders unlocked but I'm not 100% on that, still waiting for an answer from Bin4ry on that.
It's in beta at the moment though, so you may be safer not using it until some of the kinks have been ironed out.
Also, apart from an early version of CM7, there aren't any ROMs available for the Arc apart from stock SE ones, so there's really no need to use recovery just now.

[Q] noob relock an unlocked phone?

I bought my phone unlocked and don't know what the unlock code is so I want to avoid the possibility of relocking the phone thru my noobness. I will be rooting the phone to load different roms. I've read in another thread that rooting and flashing other roms will not affect the locked/unlocked state of the phone.
I am seeking confirmation that this is correct. Also on the this topic, is there anything that I could do accidentally to relock the phone?
Rooting and changing roms will not effect the lock. You would pretty much have to know the code to re-lock it.
@ triangles you can root the phone and you can flash roms and kernals with no problem. you can updated your radio version as well without worrying about anything.
if you need any info on how to root or anything just ask good luck
lg g2x rooted
mod cyanogen-eaglesbloodv2.5
trinity oc kernal

If I have an unlocked LG-G2X with Gingerbread on it and I root the phone and flash the CMD 9 ICS on it.. would it re-lock the phone because I need to know before I do it.. And is there any way to unlock the phone for free.

[Q] Should I unlock the bootloader?

I want to overclock my phone in order for the phone to get faster although my main priority is to play HD games without drop in frame rates. Thus my reason to overclock.
In order to overclock, I need to unlock the bootloader and also flash a custom kernal. Now this is where the problem comes in. The offical ICS is around the corner for Xperia Play (late april/early may) and I want ICS on my phone. I dont want a custom ICS because I dont find it legit although I would like the bloatware to be removed on the offical ICS...
Now my questions are:
* Should I unlock the bootloader and flash a custom kernal, because if I do then I wont be able to update to the offical ICS rom
* If I dont want any bloatwares on my phone, would I have to flash a custom ICS ROM?
* I'm currently on 2.3.4 and I did un-install some bloatwares (e.g. sony ericsson sync and some other useless apps) through titanium backup although when I checked my phone and memory card memory, it was still the same as before deleting those apps. Why is this?
* And is it possible to flash the original kernal and lock the bootloader so what I have left over is a ordinary xperia play but rooted?
1. You only won't be able to OTA update to ICS, you can still update with flashtool once ICS is released.
2. Root is all you need to get rid of bloatware. Gaining root access is immensely easy on any firmware, with an unlocked bootloader
3. Maybe try using SD Maid? It removes some lingering data from uninstalled apps
4. Yes you can re-lock your bootloader and re-flash the stock firmware fairly easily
Go for it, there are so many ROM to try and when ICS officially comes out you'll be able to download way before your carrier will get round to sending OTA.
But I heard that if I flash a custom Kernal, the wifi or 3G will become buggy and wont work as normal... is this true?
Some of the earliest ICS ROMs had these issues but you can always flash another Kernel or the whole stock ROM and you'll be back to where you were.
I'd start with flashing Doomlords Kernel then you can make a Clockwork Mod backup and you'll always have a easy route back.

That all depends on the kernel, DooMKerneL works for many people just fine for both 3G and Wifi
When you use doom kernel dont forget to use the modules...

[Q] [Q/Thought] ROMs for locked bootloader

A long time ago I've had an xperia X8, and was thinking about its software.
So, on it, I could install recovery, and then flash any ROM that is built for stock kernel, since I didn't unlock the bootloader.
My question is, couldn't the same concept be used on xperia M? With rachit's recovery for locked bootloader we could flash ROMs that are/will be made for stock kernel, right? If not, can anyone explain this to me?
No since Xperia M doesn't have a default recovery , you should unlock the bootloader in order to install any custom ROMs

Actually, yes it would be possible with the concept the OP is describing. Once we have a fully working recovery for locked bootloaders it will be possible to build ROMs and then distribute them for other members to use.
OP just wait until there is a properly built/working recovery built for locked bootloaders (we have people working on it now) and then you will see ROMs built for locked bootloaders popping up.

Hehe, I knew this would be the case. I've been experimenting with adb lately, and well, I'll try to make a script that (kind of) modifies some basic features until we make some progress with the recovery. Hope it doesn't take too long.
Just remember that only stock kernel works with locked bootloader. In other words, no OC and other things like that and only custom ROMs compatible with stock kernel would work...

Who can help me out?

Backup drm (if you want) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2642081
Unlock bl (if you want) - http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader
If you do unlock BL, rooting is as easy as using fastboot to flash a custom boot and recovery img, then flashing a rom with root, (just about every custom rom). If bl is locked, rooting is trickier, but not a big deal. Do the other stuff first, then go from there.
