[Q] HTC Desire restore to stock - not booting up - no SD card. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had my desire on a custom ROM (can't remember which one) - and took my SD card out and gave it to a friend cause he needed it - he then formatted it cause I said it was OK (cause I didn't think I'd need it) but then my HTC doesn't start up. It keeps going into the bootloader and I can go into clockwork recovery mode but I haven't got a SD card and all I want to do is to install a stock ROM on it.
Downloaded the stock ROM and tried installing but it won't recognize the phone.
What can I do?

To run stock, you phone has to be in FASTBOOT mode. To get there, start it with pressed back and power button. Then connect phone to computer and run downloaded ruu.

But first, post ALL. The information from your hboot screen (vol down + power from off)

[Q] Please help!!

Hi,
I rooted my htc desire but some problems with the wifi were happening, anyhow at the end I installed a custom ROM, which made my desire completly going into black screen.
Then without knowing what I was doing I went into the recovery mode and change some stuff without really knowing.
And now when I turn off and on the phone the only thing that I get is the white screen with the Bootloader version and the options for entering into recovery mode and so on, which I guess my phone has no OS or image.
I have tried to donwload 2.2 firmware and try to install it via the sd card but is not working.
Does anybody here have any idea what can I do.
Thanks in advance
Turn on your phone by pressing the Back button and Power button for 5 seconds.
The bootloader menu appears - Press Recovery and wait until it boots into recovery.
From here on out do whatever - Mount USB storage and put a new ROM on the root of your SDcard. Wipe everything and flash the ROM.
Should work fine.
Thanks s lot for your help. Highly appreciate it

Desire Z stuck in boot loop

Sorry to bother yet again but im flipping **** right now, I installed an overclock kernel from ROM Manager, rebooted and now it shows HTC, Vibrates, turns off and keeps looping.
I'm pretty worred right now, I've got clockworkmod installed (
Can somebody please tell me how to get into clockwork recovery before I have a panic attack.
Turn off phone, hold down power+volume down+up+camera button then scroll with your volume keys to recovery. Then restore a backup if possible.

Shows a black screen with the orange led flashing in the speaker.
Pull the battery, put it back in press volume down +power, it will boot into Hboot, then use volume to scroll down and select recovery, then restore a backup or flash another rom. The post two up from mine is telling you press all the buttons at once and is wrong.
What you are seeing is what happens when you press volume up+power.

sorry to open this back up but i have searched and done pretty much everything, I am bootlooping on the white HTC screen.
I can boot into Recovery but when I select Bootloader, it gives me a Red triangle with the phone. I have searched and tried flashing via fastboot to no avail. I can get ADB to recognize the phone... totally stuck.. Is there a way to flash clockwork from an SD or maybe flash the PC10IMG to return to stock? This is my freaking work phone and I really dont want to have a conversation with my boss as to why my phone is shot...
Any ideas?

Yes, first take out the battery and put it back in. That will make sure the phone is completely off.
Now, hold the volume down button down and whilst holding it down hold the power on button until you see the recovery environment boot up. It is a little menu.
Please confirm if you can boot into recovery.
Yes I can go to bootloader.
I have old version ClockworkMod Recovery - 2.5.*.*
I want to upgrade ClockworkMod Recovery to 3.2.0.0 to flash new rom 2.3
To upgrade clovlworkmod recovery I need to do this steps:
Installation:
1.Power off your DHD
2.Put it in bootloader mode; Power+Vol down and select Fastboot from menu.
3.Plug-in the USB cable.
4.Double click on install-recovery-windows.bat if you're using windows, execute install-recovery-linux.sh if you're on linux or install-recovery-mac.sh if MacOSX.
5.Done! The device will be automatically rebooted.
6.If you want to thank me, click the Thanks button.
?
Or to upgrade Clockworkmod recovery is different way?
yea, thats how you upgrade
But ENG S-OFF is needed
If you use stock rom, then I suggest to go and claim your warranty.. or can go back to the shop get replacement

But you can flash 2.2.1 back from the recovery, can you? If so, you would get a working system back and upgrade Rom manager to the latest version in order to flash the newest recovery from there. Then you can give 2.3 another go.

[Q] stuck in HBOOT, S-On, unrooted, no buttons work

My little sister's G2 has been stuck at the hboot screen every time the phone boots. Her phone is completely stock, with the most recent (that I know of) update, the one in PC10IMG.zip. She didn't do anything to damage it at all, it just started booting like this out of the blue.
When at the hboot screen, no buttons work at all, the only way to get out of it is to do a battery pull. I even tried using ADB but it wouldn't detect the phone.
Any suggestions?
first thing i would try is to somehow wipe the phone... push power & volume down to enter bootloader; choose recovery (a red triangle or something like that should appear) then push power & volume up (the recovery menu should appear); then wipe everything...
if this doesn´t work post here again
EDIT: sry, just recognized that i didn´t read your post carefull enough... if your buttons do not work, you probably have to flash a RUU

i booted it with vol down+power, then i pushed vol up+power and it started searching for zips. I had pc10img on it and it found and tried to update with it, but it gave "main version is older! update fail! press power to reboot." and rebooting again brought me to the bootloader.
edit: i don't have any experience with ruu files, so if that's what i need to do, can you tell me how?
Search for a RUU which is similiar or higher than your actual version, download it and put it on your pc... on your phone push power & trakepad to enter fastboot mode, connect your phone with pc and start the .exe on your pc...
Before you do this remove the pc10img.zip from your sdcard and try what i posted before again...

i tried doing this, but it failed, saying that my phone model wasn't right or something like that. but it did make the phone boot into the rom! and it appears to have all of its data still, hopefully everything works now.
rebooting will make the phone enter fastboot still. none of the ruu files i've tried work. is there a link to one that will work? i haven't found any.
ok, before you do the ruu thing, try to do a factory reset (either in the booted rom or through recovery)
here some links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074391 (this is a pc10img.zip - you have to put it on your sdcard)
or
http://www.filefactory.com/f/b8dc837b1ed80be8/ (...all official ruu)
pls use the thanks button
htsger 3
i used the pc10img you linked me to. gives me: "main version is older! update fail!"
i tried the ruu files you linked me to and those failed as well. they kept telling me my phone image was wrong or something like that.

same error as above
I did some thinking and thought that getting it to boot by trying and failing to use an RUU, downgrading it, rooting it there, and then flashing another rom would solve my problems.
I managed to get to downgrading and rooting the phone, but after apparently flashing cwm through rom manager, I turned off the phone and tried to boot into recovery by vol down + power. Those are the buttons I use to boot my g2x into recovery, and through searching I didn't find any other combos for the g2.
That didn't work. I got sent to fastboot again, and no buttons work. I then tried RUU again, and this time it worked, booted. I turned it off and back on to see if it would actually load the rom this time. Alas, fastboot screen again. Still no working buttons.
I tried the PC10IMG.zip again. It flashed, but when it says <Press power to reboot> and I press power, I get sent to fastboot.
I pretty much consider this phone a lost cause, but if anyone has a suggestion that might help, please tell!
I can only tell you that I have same problem, just happened to me y/d and I am stuck on white HTC logo not having adb access and can not flash any stock rom for signature errors. not sure how to continue. thread is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614042, good luck for both to solve it

Stuck at Green HTC logo after installing ILWT Rom

I've rooted and downgraded my phone from 2.3.3 to 2.2 and it boots in no problem at all however when I go into hboot the volume up and keys do not respond therefore it defaults to fastboot and trys to load the 2.2 image.
There is nothing wrong with the volume keys as I can boot into the bootloader and move up and down that list with the volume keys.
Any ideas how to go about solving this so I can try some of the roms on here.
Thanks

Your post conflicts with itself (the bold). hboot and boot loader and spl etc are the same thing. It's more likely that the trackpad is stuck (power + trackpad = straight to fastboot).
Volume Up + Power is download mode.
If you want recovery it's Bootloader -> Select Recovery.
If you're connected to the computer, and in fastboot mode you can reboot into the boot loader with
fastboot reboot-bootloader
and from there can select recovery.

Sorry meant hboot & fastboot under the bootloader. Both bring up 2 different sets of options. I can use the volume buttons on the fastboot screen but not in the hboot screen so I can't chose recovery.
In any case I installed Clockwork Mod and booted into recovery from there and tried to install the ILWT rom and it seem to install fine however when I reboot I'm stuck with the green htc splash where it is stuck. I've had to flash back to 2.2 as its the only option available to me and need the phone working. Will try again this evening. But this is the second time I've flashed that rom and both times the same result.
I'd previously got this ROM installed and had no problems however my board died so just got the phone back from HTC but having much less success this time.
The bootloader screen info at the top says:
Vision PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0005
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Oct 11 2010,20:10:38
though that will change when I go back to stock however it was exactly the same last time I tried to load this rom so not expecting any different response this evening when I try again.

I'm not sure what version ILWT is, but if it's one of the ICS roms, and you're using clockworkmod, there is a chance that some of your partitions are ext3 types, and you may need ext4 for a number of ICS roms.
(Some even need the newer 26.13.04.19 radio).
It's a gingerbread rom. Here's details.

Any chance you can grab an adb logcat when it boots up? To least see how far it gets. And have you seen the problem with any other GB roms, like G2Lite etc?

I assume you just mean the rom itself is not rooted, that it's still a unlocked SHIP S-OFF phone with CWM recovery.

*facepalm* Why did you do that? You would have to have only flashed the backup copy of your stock rom to get functional in the mean time rather than locking it back up with an RUU update of sort.

If you're unrooted/locked again, something to keep in mind when unlocking and rooting it again:
When you get to the point of booting into recovery (i.e.: you already rooted your shipped rom), then you can simply perform a backup first before wiping and flashing a new rom.
That way no re-locking/unrooting will be required next time you want to get back to a functional original rom for your phone (and would still technically be rooted, just with the phone's provided rom).
PS: I recommend using 4EXT Recovery (especially if you plan on using ICS roms in the future), you can either use the free app at http://www.4ext.net/ to install it, or the Recovery Control from the Play Store. That'll help make the backups a bit smaller with the tar-mode (tar's the backup so it's compressed, but isn't backward compatible to say clockworkmod).

OK. When I did the clockwork mod I did chose the option to backup before I flashed the new rom so it should be there however I didn't know how to get back into Clockwork Mod recovery in order to restore it. My problem is that when I tried to install ILWT rom I got the green htc splash screen that it was just frozen on and the only way to get rid of it was to pull the battery. When I hold volume down + power I end up at hboot which only allows me to chose the first option which basically finds PC10 something image which is my htc rom so I just installed it because as I say I didn't know how to do anything else.

When you went back to SHIP/S-ON you most likely also put the original stock recovery on there as well, you will not be able to access that back up until you unlock and re-root your phone (i.e.: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Vision ) and then boot back into recovery (button method is Power + Volume down, then volume button to select Recovery and power button to select it) to perform a restore (though I would back up your stock rom once back in recovery).
The backups are generally stored on the SD Card in the /clockworkmod/backup/ folder , typically as a dated folder under.

Ah that's back to the original problem. When I'm boot the volume up / down doesn't work therefore I can't select recovery so it autoselects the first option which loads the PC10somthing.img (which is the htc 2.2 rom which is unrooted and puts s-on) that's on the root of my sd card however the volume up and down is working the fastboot screen when I used the trackpad + power and that's been my problem. I guess if I named a stock rom PC10xsomething then it would autoselect that so I don't end up in constantly cycle of rooting and unrooting. Will see this evening.

There should be no PC10IMG.zip on the SDCard if you're already done flashing what needed flashing. Otherwise you'll keep getting stuck there.
OK - been a bit busy and had to abandon my attempts until today. Probably best thing as I discovered that I could get into clockwork mod recovery from a hung htc green logo screen by pulling the battery and then putting it in again and just hitting the power button without using the volume down button.
From there I had a backup of my rom from before which I used and a ran no problem so just spent time doing a titanium restore. So back up and running again.
I might give ICS a go if the driver issue with the camera ever gets resolved as I still use my camera, usually for document scans, quite regularly.
Thanks for taking the time in trying to get me sorted.
Did you make sure to remove PC10IMG.zip from ur sdcard???
