HTC Desire Debrand

Hey Guys,
im getting a Desire through Telstra tonight, and the first thing i want to do is debrand the thing.
I have read up on some things but still a little confused, can someone point me in the right direction, of 1 how to unlock the phone, root it and the best ROM to install on it.

Ok i think i know what im doing now.
One thing though, i just want a normal rom to put on it, just debranded, can anyone recommend me something?
I dont really want custom roms etc

Look in the sticky in rom section, shows the stock roms available. Then you can upgrade to stock 2.2

Ok so if i use this rom

Which are not rooted do i still need to root the device etc or can i just use this rom and it will update and remove the telstra stuff?
And is this the latest normal 2.2 Rom?

You need to root to debrand, then put the stock Rom on

Ok no worries ill do that, but is the rom i posted the correct Stock 2.2 Rom i would use in AUS? for the Desire?

Just remember having a goldcard always inserted, while debranding and OTA updating.

HI there,
I used the unrevoked method and this provides "root" and ClockworkMod Recovery. I then initially downloaded [ROM-FroYo] Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (16/07 v1.0c | OpenDesire Team) link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
The above rom is very much like the standard HTC sense ROM but without the Tel$tra bloatware. Have a good search on xda though as there have been a number of roms (sense like) been released since this one.
I have since moved on to [ROM-FROYO AOSP] OpenDesire v3.6.1 (720P | 2.6.34.5 SVS KERNEL | 1305mhz) (26/08). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712615
This rom is a "vanilla" (plain) version of the android OS and is half the size of the sense ROM, and is clean and fast, but you lose the "sense" interface and the HTC FM radio.
Everything else camera, wi-fi, GPS, phone, etc works perfectly from me.
BTW, all this is on a Tel$ta Desire (A8183) that is 3 months old. I have had no probs at all.

It would be pointless rooting before applying an RUU, as it's not necessary and the flash process will remove root anyway.
That RUU you pointed to will break a Desire with an SLCD screen, so be warned.

Ok so i should just use a hacked rom thats based on the normal one, how do i find out if the phone i have is SLCD?

WOW now im even more confused i used to be able to hack my old HTC Touch Pro easily lol.
Ok so i have to hope my Telstra delivered phone is still AMOLED, then i wont have any dramas, to be honest im not much into running a custom rom, id rather just get rid of the telstra crap thats going to be on the phone, but i also do not want to brick it or break the screen in the process.
So if i just use one of the RUU updates in your post you linked me too it doesnt matter if its AMOLED or SLCD i can update to it without rooting?

Ill get the phone first work out if i have SLCD or not, then go from there.

You can debrand on any type of screen using the correct RUU. You can root both types too.
If you root you cannot run an official ROM, but you can run something almost exactly the same.

Which Froyo Rom (rooted) would be the closest to stock?
To Confirm if i have an AMOLED phone i can just update a Stock Non Branded ROM without rooting? By placing the update.zip on the phone and updating using recovery mode?

just go with the flow, unbrand it, root it and play with all the roms, your gonna love it. try em all and see what u like best. I am on nextsense rom 7 at the mo and waiting for the kitchen to open again so i can do some cooking. Tried opendesire a while back and it was pretty mint, may take a lokk at it again myself.

You can't switch to an unbranded rom by using update.zip files, you use an RUU to flash the phone, which requires a goldcard.
To install custom roms you root and install them as zip files in recovery.
You can do both on an SLCD or AMOLED screen, but with an SLCD screen you have to be more careful which RUU you use.

how do i flash my telus desire back to stock?

hello all. ive recenetly bricked my fascinate SGS and got a desire replacement. on sgs its as ez as havin ght eodin files and knowledge to flash back to stock 2.2
is there a ez way for me to return to stock on a htc desire runnin 2.2?
i dont wanna start hacking it and findout im screwed cause i dont tihnk i will b getting another replacement phone quite so ez

You need to find the Telus RUU for your phone. Did you check exactly which version of the ROM you were running when you bought the phone?

Here's the current Telus RUU, no idea if it'll work though

i just got the phone yesterday and got the root working. my software info says the following
android 2.2
baseband 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27

i just did a stock nandroid backup.
i keep tryin to donwload that but it keep failing. and what program would i use to flash that?
alsot ive been readin about flashing a custom rom and the words goldcard keep poppin up. is this something i need b4 i flash a new rom? and which rom would u suggest?

An RUU is an .exe so you just run it in Windows, maybe should've read up on this before rooting blindly

k im sry i didnt google 1st but i was pro with my sgs and figured it was relatively the same. my phone is working perfect still i just wanted the stock just incase something unforseen happens down the road. so to reflash to stock is it the same as flashing root? just open the app , put phone in debug and hook to pc? and also can u help me figure out if i need a goldcard? and maybe a good custom rom?

a. No, you don't need a gold card to flash the correct ROM for your device

1. Connect phone in FASTBOOT (turn it on holding the back button)
2. Run the RUU

Downgrading 2.50.405.2 to 1.32 ?

I just got my dhd back from repair and they updated it to 2.50.405.2 -.-
Is this downgradable yet to root ? I ****in hate standard roms

i think versions above 2.37 can't be downgraded yet.
i am waiting for downgrade of 2.42 as well. just wait

Well, u need clockworkmod to flash it which u need rom manager for. And for rom manager u need root
I think we'll have to wait.. But the 2.37+ downgrade has been in development for about 2 months now.. Taking way to long

Probably waiting to see which bootloaders are unlocked, as promised.

If u are S-OFF then u can downgrade to 2.36 by using the RUU version then root ur device,
edit:- i´ve done it more than 3times after updating from 2.36 to 2.50 "OTA" (believe me u can)

I was waiting for this too, and now it seems like we can downgrade and root our devices. What could worst case scenario be, if something went wrong?

Nn,im freshmani didn't do anything about this..so i need some simple manual how to do it?this link seems complicated for me nowi dont have,root,s-off etc..

Dont worry, in a couple of hours we'll have an updated method and toolkit available to downgrade.

Trivial Question
I have a trivial question, I am very interested in rooting using this method, however I have recently encountered an issue with my stock rom ever since I did the OTA update to 2.43.611.1 The issue is HTC Sence has stopped unexpectedly window pops up quite often & in talking to telus my provider & HTC them selves, they both say the phone needs to be repaired,
My question since I encountered the problem immediatly upon doing the OTA update should I get it repaired first or just try rooting to see if that fixes it.
Also if possible can I be pointed in the direction of how to return to stock Telus if I end up rooting & the probelm still persists?
My thanks to thoes who have diligently be working & involved in helping others & myself reach root status on higher Build numbers.

The reason you're getting the error after the ota update is the same reason why people get issues after installing custom roms and not wiping their device... the old cache and user data conflicts with the update.
Downgrading and then flashing a custom rom along with flashing an updated radio will remedy the problem. I dont believe you'll want to use the initial radio release, I highly recommend flashing the radio from the 2.52 korean release to your Telus DHD, along with the ril's from that release and replacing the ones in the rom you will flash via cwm recovery. ENG S-OFF is required to flash a new radio or recovery img.
Once you downgrade, you can always return to the stock 2.43.661.1 rom. There is a thread in the Desire HD/Inspire 4G Forum on Driphter.com where I've placed the RUU's of common builds (especially for Telus and AT&T). If returning the device for warranty purposes, you must Radio S-On prior to Installing the stock rom via the RUU. The RUU Itself will set ENG to SHIP, and unroot.

Cheers guys I will try that downgrade guide. Just a note though. The file fize of the version of HTC Sync for the Desire HD I'm downloading is 66.6MB. I hope that isn't an omen for this to go horrendously wrong

i got this htc desire from a family member and im coming from a verizon phone(droid x) to a cellular south phone(htc desire obv;p)
When i got this phone, it had a cm7 rom on it with 2.2.1 firmware
well i want to revert this thing back to stock because some reason i cant flash this miui rom because i get getting a assertion fail to a installation aborted. .so im at a stomp

you can install stock_hboot with android flasher
(if you have a cm7 hboot, your phone is already rooted and s-off)
then you can apply the RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5

If your phone is a branded one, you will probably need a goldcard to flash the RUU.

well that the title says i have problem to root my inspire 4g of at&t i cannot find any program that works correctly nowadays i unlock the bootloader using the method of htcdev, i have to update the bootloader to work correctly using the ruu my software it's GB 2.3.3 and the sense version is 2.1 in case of root i have to downgrade my cellphone beacouse it's whit ruu and retun stock or what. sorry guys i am very noob if anyone can help my i will apreciate for all my life. have a nice day

If your bootloader is already unlocked, flash CWM recovery and then Superuser. Follow the guide in my signature. Being new or a noob won't excuse your from reading and searching.
