Thumbs up for sure. Thanks for sharing.
I don't understand why you need a jig to do this, I am guessing this will be possible via sync cable soon enough.
Is there a way via adb?

whats so special about this USB "JIG"? What makes it turn on the phone to specifically reset the binary count?
got a cpl off of ebay shipped from US reseller...got it in 2days, booted from power off state with jig plugged in power slot. and it entered a modified download state that mentioned resetting the download count. pulled battery and put it back in, it changed the boot up to samsung sgII but no more triangle YAY!!!

For you cheap fools like me
300k ohm resistance between pins 4 & 5 also does the trick.
i happened to have a couple spare usb cables and resistors. and can confirm 300k ohm resistance measured with my trusty cheapo ohmeter between pins 4&5 resets the counter and throws the device into update mode.

Hell, my time is worth more than $2... I'd have to drive to Tanner to pick up the resistor (They're the only place I buy such sundries, and I'm pretty sure I don't have a 300k Ohm resistor in the tool kit, and they're 20 minutes from work) and then break down a micro usb cable and solder it together. Pass.... $2 from eBay and I'm golden.

Wurrrrd! I paid $3 from a US seller on Amazon. I ordered it Sunday night and here it is in the mail already and already reset my counter. Priceless! Can't think of any reason to go about the fuss of trying to rig one up when you can get one shipped to your home for the price of a bottle of water.

I just bricked my i897 today, and I really can't wait weeks for slow ebay shipping to get a USB jig. I tried to use resistors to make my own jig but it didn't seem to be good enough to recover my phone.
Anyone in Montreal, Canada area that has a USB jig I can borrow for just one time?
Thank you!
Keep trying, it took me about 30 minutes of trying the first time to get the jig to work. I ended up squeezing the ends of the wires with pliers to make them a bit thinner since the 2 metal plates you need to touch are so tiny and close together.

If you have a multimeter/access to a multimeter/friend with a multimeter, make sure that your resistor jig is at 301k, and not lower (or higher); i did the 3 100k resistors, but ended up falling shy of 301k at 293k, and had to add on to that in order to make my jig work. Also, make sure that you're not touching the jig; wear a latex glove or something when attempting.

Watched a few video reviews of unboxing. Some are getting the usb to hdmi adapter and some aren't. I'm wondering if this is how wirefly and letstalk are selling theirs so much cheaper. Bad business, but maybe they are taking the adapter out before shipping, and then planning on reselling it as new?? If you have the phone please list where you got it and whether you got the adapter or not.

I believe the "reviewer's devices" are the ones that come with the MHL adapter. I've read that consumer's version of the phone wont come with it. Luckily I bought mine ages ago when I had the Evo 3D.
I doubt any retailer is removing the MHL adapter. (unless you ordered your phone from Gamestop, that is).
The more likely explanation is that reviewers were also sent MHL adapters so that they could give more complete reviews. It's just a sign of the times that retail devices lack connectivity components. At least phones still come with AC adapters and USB cords (knock on wood).
I just find it strange that the box even has a compartment for it, but its empty with some of the reviews.

The empty space in the box is for the battery.
The one included with the phone is wayy to short and I usually will use it in bed as it charges.
Can anyone recommend a good charger?
just go to dollar general...etc, and buy the usb kit that has the extension in the package it is only a few $$$$ heck with the extension and the orig usb cord I have about 10 ft
I bought an OEM Motorola one off amazon. Works amazing. Like this but it was cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0018A56JG/ref=mp_s_a_4?qid=1323309015&sr=8-4

Does a usb extension cable carry the same amount of juice as the original cable?
I.E. if I use an extension paired with my original samsung wall charger, do I lose anything in terms of charging rate?
I actually use a usb extension cable when I charge at home and it seems to work just fine.

I was reading through the threads and saw a few comments from members who said the stock Samsung charger is not that good
This is my first experience with a Samsung Galaxy phone so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good USB Cable
I've already experienced some issues that may be USB Cable related. Some files I transferred through FTP would not complete. It showed up while the phone was charged but when I unplug it the file disappeared (on internal storage)
So if anyone could possibly suggest a good cable, preferably with a link to purchase , I would greatly appreciate it thanks!

Whether or not the Samsung cable is sub-par, you are going to want a better charger. You'll want at least a 2 amp charger (Amazon basics has a decent 2.1 amp one).

I used this charger last night on my GS3 with the old cable from my Droid Charge (which appears to be nearly identical). Seems fine. Charge was decently quick, and there wasn't excess heat at the connector or with the device at large.
My only complaint with the included TouchPad cable is that it "hangs" upon removal, whereas the Samsung charging cable feels a lot smoother going into and out of the port.

To the OP, I can't recommend any specific cable to you, but I do have some experience with some of those "OEM chargers" that are often advertised on Amazon. I ordered 2 of them off amazon, and both of them were not actually OEM chargers and they both barely worked. One didn't even charge my phone (emailed the seller and got a refund, but it's the principle), and the other one had a faulty tip that didn't sit tight in my phone. The only thing I can suggest is being careful, sorry I can't link you a cable. Hope you find one.

I have bought many cables from digitalkynectonline on Ebay. The cables have held up very good. I have bought 6ft and 10ft cables and they are reasonably priced. The ends are molded unlike some of the cheap cables you get on ebay. The cord is heavier than than alot to and seems to take alot of abuse. The ends seem to fit in the phone nice and tight.
I have putchased the cheap ones off of amazon. Only use prime. Most work for several months. Expensive ones seem to work as well as the cheap ones. If I get one that does not work I ship it back at no cost. For $2 or $3 dollars a cable it is worth it.

I know this might seem out of left field, but Motorola's MicroUSB cables have always been incredibly reliable for me. They're made tough and any deep operations I may do (S-OFF, adb sideloading, etc) work flawlessly with them. They're not the perfect price like at monoprice.com but if you don't care about price and just want quality, Moto ain't too shabby.
