Mango and SD Cards - Windows Phone 7 General

Does anyone know if Mango is less picky on SD Cards? Or does it still have to be a certain model of Sandisk class 2?

It has to be certain model.. just google it which model and class it is before buying.. many people have posted before which class works and which dont.. very easy, no problem...

In my experience it's MORE picky. I had a working compatible SanDisk card (correct type) before Mango which refuses to work after updating. A few others seem to be having the same problem.
My suggestion is not risking wasting the money on a card, try and make do with the 16Gb until it's time for a new phone.

I think that's the problem... The stock T-Mo ROM won't recognize higher capacity cards. You can try flashing (installing) the HTC 1.33 ROM or Kavana's/rickwyatt's 6.1 ROMs to enable usage of a larger card.
2 Gig is not a SDHC amount, the T-Mo Rom Should accept it.
Can you put the card in an adapter and access it from your PC?
(To Make sure the card is not corrupt?)
yeh i have a couple files on it that i put on it just so there was something on the card. so i know the 2gig card isnt bad.
Try this first before you put on a new ROM (although you really should put on a new ROM):

I know WM6 should work with 2GB from the start. I've sometimes heard that the brand of card could be the culprit. Which brand are you using?

It is *supposed* to enable SDHC support (cards that are larger than 2GB). I never had the issue as I went with a non-Tmobile ROM (SDHC support is enabled in the non-Tmobile 6.0 and 6.1 ROMs by default) from the get-go. It might not have any effect on the threadstarter's problem, but it's something simple to try just in case.
Honestly, it's probably an off-brand card that the threadstarter is trying to use (that would be my guess), but you never know. It could just be a bug in the OS... Maybe the card is formatted wrong...maybe his Dash is having hardware issues...it could be any number of things (just like with desktop computers - this is a computer after all).
try formatting the card, sometimes the companies place files on the card to be read for certain devices. Formatting the card might work for you.
its a pny card...im going to try installing a new ROM and see what happens. i know the card works...it was flawlessly in my friends blackberry pearl.

PNY cards are horrible, more trouble then they are worth. Toshiba makes these cards primarly for Cameras, so putting them in other devices (smartphones) have unpredictable results. Stick with SanDisk, they cost more but are worth it.

Let us know what happens. And thanks for the tip Bupahs! I know I have been eyeing some PNY SDHC cards for costs reasons, and have been curious if anything would work with WM6.1 ... (hence one of the threads I started here on micro sd's )

I picked up a 4GB SanDisk microSD card on Amazon for something like $22 shipped. Are PNY cards that much cheaper?

SanDisk microSDHC 16GB

Any of you guys tried this card with Desire?
Would like to know if it's worth it...
I think the "speed class" of it or whatever is on 2. If that makes any difference.
@Mods, if this thread is posted in wrong place, please move it. Thank you!
The maximum storage capacity on the Desire is 32GB so I don't see why not.
Please search before posting next time.
speed class for me makes a difference asi use the camer and video. higher class = higher potential transfer speeds
Opps sorry about that. Totally forgot about searching :S
The memory card that came with the Desire is only class 2 anyway so just gauge it by that.
Yes, I'm using one. No problems at all. And I'll be getting a 32gb one when they become available in a few weeks, at about £100, as opposed to SanDisk charging £150 now.
@92sky
Funny that you mention 32gb, because I looked around and couldn't find any :S All I could find were 16gb
@Alex
Yes I'm aware of that, but is it really that noticeable IRL? or more of the benchmark munching nitpicking diffs?

Expansys, Play.com, MyMemory and Mobile Fun are all listing it at around £99, for late April/early May delivery. I phoned Mobile Fun yesterday who said that it was due now, but has been delayed because of the volcano.
Oh thx mate! Gonna have a look there then.
EVERYTHING is delayed because of the lil' ol' cano it seems.

I won't even ask LOL
Odd, could find 32gb only at expansys, and they didn't have any price point on that...
@gogol
Aren't they expensive like there is no tomorrow?
Using a 16gb class 6 sandisk as well and I have to agree it works like a charm.
I remember reading somewhere that 32gb sdhc cards aren't supported atm, but will be shortly on the desire.
Not sure though, but do a search for it before you plunge into forking out the cash for one of those.
I do remember reading, either here or on another forum, that someone had bought their 32gb direct from SanDisk, and said it worked with no problems.
I've got a SanDisk 16GB Class 2 card, works fine, no issues with speed at all

I believe you can't format them in the phone, according to one report I saw, but otherwise they function as you would expect.
Argh choices choices!
I think for now, I gonna go and get meself a 16gb class 2, should suffice until the better ones comes out...

Replacing the stock SD Card

So I am interested in replacing the stock 8GB SD card with a 32 GB model. I have a couple of questions regarding this.
1. Are there specific brand's (specs) I need to look out for when getting a 32GB card? i.e. Compatability issues?
2. I don't want to lose anything from my current setup so how should I format my new card and copy over all my data from the existing one?
Thanks!!
already bumped off the first page and no replies.
No one has any idea about this?
I think Q&A must be blackhole
I don't see why you couldn't just unmount, remove, copy the entire contents of the card, install the new one and your off running-
I'm pretty sure you need to format the SD card FAT-32, not sure what block size. I'm guessing your probably going to want a class 6 or greater, and you may want to look into partitioning it (Swap partition? linux type? for better performance?)(I'm kinda looking into that right now myself).
I could be wrong on all counts though. Let me know how you make out- good luck. wow some of the 32G cards are more than I paid for my phone!

(1) If you pay less than about $200 at this point there's a good bet it's a counterfeit card. Otherwise stick with recognizable brands - Kingston, Sandisk, Transcend...
(2) Format the new card in the phone before you copy any files to it then do as the other poster suggested (just copy your files across).
They cost a grip!
Just get a 16GB card for $40-45 for now, not worth spending 4-5x as much for 2x the capacity. Class 4 should be fine as well AFAIK ('specially if you're going for 16GB, C6/16GB can be tougher to find for a good price), C6 8GB cards are super cheap (<$20). The 8GB card that comes w/the phone is C2, FWIW.
I agree...I'd wait for the 32 to come down in price.
8G is plenty for me for now...

Where did u get the info that the card that came with it is class 2? Been trying to find that out but could not get the answer.
I just received my 16G (C6) card today from Transcend...and have to agree...gonna cost you a group to go 32G unless black market piece. Pay the extra dollars for branded hardware...this one cost around $68 and has some great specs.
This does bring up a question for me though...
I partitioned the card at 50/50 but got to thinking...why do I need 8G's for moving apps to the sdcard? Any thoughts from the group as to a good partition ratio?

Pull it out and look, it'll have a class 2 stamp on it.
So to throw another question out there, are there any critical folders I should back up? I'm getting a 16gb card ordered from frys.
I know for sure I'll want to back up pics and music, but I have a lot of nandroid backups and the such. I'm not using apps2sd so that's no real problem either.
I haven't had an Android phone before (coverted from an iphone 2g ) so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Lexar 32gb micro SDHC class 10 card...failx2

ok so I am now about to be on my 3rd 32gb Lexar class 10 micro sdhc card. I am thinking that the first two since they were in the same shipment batch that they were just a bad bunch of cards. Just wanted to put the warning out there to you guys. My cards will just show up as corrupted and will not mount. Having to use a forensic software to pull all the non-backed up stuff off right now.
Anyone else having any problems with them?
I havent tried Lexar but I did buy a 32gig Class 10 Patriot and it has worked flawlessly so far
I have the lexar one and it works fine.
just warning you...37 days into this card and it failed....the first one lasted a little over 2 weeks.
back up, thats all I am saying
I got one coming... i'll see how it goes

Thx. I decided to try the Patriot version instead (not that it has any better reviews, but a few Atrix owners have reported success with it). Cheers.
Been running lexar since first week had the phone, no problems yet. What batch yours come out of? Also, ordered from provantage, shipped from new jersey or georgia one, will have to double check.
couldnt tell ya. I do know it was the very first shipment of them that came into our store like a week or two after CES. Im just thinking it was just a bad first batch. 3rd one is going fine so far...
I got mine through Beach Audio via Amazon. It's been working fine so far.
I got my Lexar class 10 a few weeks before the Atrix, it has been in the phone since the first boot and has worked great.
There is a known issue with micro sdhc cards with the atrix. Just like with the windows phone. Motorola is supposed to be coming out with an update to fix the issue.

What kind of prices are you guys finding on these SD cards? It seems silly to me to buy a single 32gb card for $100~ when you can get 3-4 16gb cards for the same price.

Link to anything that mentions this known issue - this is nothing like Windows 7 -where the SD card slot was blocked at release.

The highest capacity model of any data storage device always has a higher per unit of storage cost than lesser models... but it also holds the most. You've got to pay to play.
If you wanted to have access to 32 gb of data, you wouldn't want to be swapping out two 16 gb cards as needed to get that capacity would you? To me, that seems silly.

And I understand that. For me personally, taking 15 seconds to swap an SD card isn't really a big deal, especially since with this phone (thank science), the card slot is easily available under the battery cover, instead of the battery itself.
But, if I can get a decent price on a 32gb card I'm all for it. The price difference just doesn't seem worth it (to me) to save the 15 seconds
If you want to carry all 32gb with you, where di you put the extra 16gb card? It gets old remembering to put accessories in your pocket.

Anyone else getting VERY SLOW transfers speeds with this card? Average I'm getting is 3.5mb/sec which is well below normal!! Therefore, it takes awhile to transfer a movie from my PC.

Like I said, it's really all about personal preferrence. I carry a shoulder bag around with me everywhere I go, so remembering accessories isn't really an issue. I always have my Lapdock, charger, bluetooth mouse, etc. with me at all times. This phone replaced any need I had for a netbook.
Still no word on prices people have got for these?

[Q] micro sdxc 64gb Card to SGS2?

Is it possible that SGS2 would manage micro sdxc 64gb Card?
gsmarena says no

but they could be wrong?
SDHC host -could- be compatible with SDXC card, but...
From what I'm understanding in the link below, the hardware in our handset won't be the problem with accepting an SDXC card... but we'll be waiting on Android to recognize such a card.

Sir you are correct, thats indeed the current problem. Although it is not a very big problems, since linux doesnt see the difference, thus accepting sdxc cards This could be fixed with a software update. Lets hope Samsung is watching us here
hm.... !!!
How hard would it be for a dev to implement it do you think?
Not that difficult IMHO.... Because hardware requirement for both types of cards are the same.... So only the cost factor & availability of high capacity storage are minimal. Hence they are not used commonly....
Otherwise imagine sgs2 utilizing 2TB of storage from sdxc ????? WOW !!!!!!
That would be sexy..... Devs are you listening ????
Any news with 64gb on sgs2? I know this is dead topic since a while, but there's 2.3.4 leaked already, anyone checked is it works now / discover how to make 64gig fully working?
Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any microSDXC cards on the market at the moment -- even full-size SDXC cards are a bit hard to come by.
