[Q] Low Internal Space With Few Apps - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am running CM7 on my Desire and i can't exactly figure out why i only have about 17MB of free internal space.
When i go to App2SD is says that i have 17MB of free space of the 147MB total. I then decided to add the sizes of all the apps on my phone (the ones on movable, and the ones on phone only) and it summed to about 50MB. Even if i add some space for cache (which is clean because i checked) i am nowhere near the supposedly used 130MB.
What is occupying all this space? Anyone with any idea or same problem?
P.S: I know there are several threads with this issue ("low internal space") but in all of them the users seem to have indeed low space and are looking for a way to clear some. I can't figure out where my space went (lol) thus this thread.
Regards,

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

From your description, you are probably using Stock Hboot with
/system = 250MB
/cache = 40MB
/data = 147MB
With this kind of partition you are limited to 147MB for your apps. Take into consideration that Android's Dalvik cache is stored on the data partition, you are really going to ran out of space fast.
You need to at least change your partition table to CM7r2 found on alpharev.nl to optimize the space usage of your phone's internal memory.
/system = 145MB
/cache = 5MB
/data = 287MB

Or you could do it the easy way.. Download an app called s2e from Android market. Its for CM7 rom, it moves the apps to you're sd ext for you.

Will this also work on Leedroid 3.0.8.2?

I'm not sure, you'd have to ask the Dev via market.

Just did a bit more reading about it. Think its just for cyanogenmod7

Yeah i'm pretty sure it is but its probably worth asking the question.

I am having the same issue only with my internal memory and my sd card. I know for sure I updated the radio too. So i'm clueless as well. I would use the app suggested to you because I am running cyanogen 7.1 stable but I only have 312mb of free space on it also from 2gb.

Pretty sure that leedroid has either a2sd+ or data++ pre built into the rom so you wouldn't need to use s2e. Only need it for CyanogenMod because it doesn't support it as standard.

I had exactly the same problem with the low internal space on my HTC Desire. I downloaded an app called App2SD enabler. I installed this app and now it lets me move pretty much every app which couldnt be moved before to SD. You cant move like systems app and data from the apps but you can move the app. Eg for example Tango, which is a video calling app is 17mb. I moved it to the SD and its now only 1mb on my phone . But this only works if your phone is rooted. It worked fine for me, however some people do have problems with it so be wary. Link is below..
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.leinardi.setinstalllocation&hl=en

If you guys look at my post, you'll see that i already use App2SD to move my apps.
The problem is that if i add all the apps on my phone it gives me 50MB. And it says i only have 16 free of the 147 total.
The question is: where the hell is the rest of the space?

Have you flashed a few different ROMs? I did, and kept getting less and less free space as a result of each reflash leaving behind residual crud that normal wiping between flashes didn't remove. See here for my question, the proposed solution, and the outcome. (I've now got about 30Mb, and would have over 48MB if it weren't for Swype, Jorte, and a few other things that don't work as well from the SD card).

This is interesting. I'm assuming it'll move all existing installed apps?
I've CM 7.0.3 and I've also installed the DarkTremor A2SD script, but it seemed to have left all my existing apps intact.

Yeah i'm pretty sure it moves existing apps, I ran it with a bunch already installed and my storage went up I think. There is also a way to import from darktremor. Instructions are on the app page on market, there is also a link to more detailed info.

I just went back to my first recovery and then flashed back to cyanogen 7.1 and everything has been great since. Oh and cyanogen has a setting in cyanogen settings that enables app to SD. You don't have to download anything.

That's stock a2sd and you will run out of space far quicker than if you use darktremor or s2e

Ext Partition

I have a 5120mb EXT on my phone and everything was great until today I got the warning that my phone memory was full.
By the looks of it, all installed applications for the past month have been going to the phone memory rather than the EXT.
How can I change it back to how it was?

Either a2sd+ is not working right or you have so many apps that the internal memory is full but the ext not jet. If a2sd+ is working correctly you might want to look in to data2sd or changing your partition size.

There is no way my EXT can be full... but how can I check how much space is left on it?
How do I check my A2SD+?
Quick system info pro or titanium backup. Keep also in mind that even with a2sd+ a part of the app will always go to the internal memory

Under Manage Applications, I have the option of moving some apps from Phone to SD... so surely for some reason they are going to the phone :-/

No, learn the difference between froyo a2sd and a2sd+.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I know the difference, but my point is that the option to move them is there because they are on the phone and not the EXT. Most of my apps are on the EXT, so why has it stopped working and now apps are going to the phone?
Sent from my HTC Desire
Judging form your answers you have no idea what the difference between froyo A2SD and A2SD+ is. In short, froyo A2SD allows a part of the app to be transfered to the fat32 partition of your sd card. This is what you see under Manage Applications The froyo A2SD. Then there is A2SD+ which moves most of the application to the ext partition, which is more or less also internal memory to the phone. However a part of the app always stays on the internal memory and that is, when you install a lot of apps, why you will still get the low memory message.
If you use A2SD+ it does not matter where the apps are installed in Manage Applications. A part of the app will stay on the internal memory and the rest is moved between the ext partition and the fat32 partition if you move between phone and sd.
If you know your way around with terminal or have root explorer you can check this for your self. A small part of the app can be found in /data/app the rest, including the dalvik cache, can be found in /system/sd.
If there is anything in /system/sd (this means A2SD+ is working), move all the apps, via manage applications, to the phone since there is no benefit in having the on the fat32 partition (where they are if they are on the sd).
Then check if mail, maps, contacts or gmail are using a lot of space and if that is really necessary or if you can delete something there.
If a this point you still haven't found anything to delete and what to get rid of the low memory warning it's time to look in to using data2sd or changing you mdt partitions. But whatever you do, make sure you know what you are doing.

[Q] What is using up all my space?

Hi,
I'm a desire user running on the cyanogenmod 6.1.0 stable.
I know that the ROM does not support apps2sd so i know i have a smaller limit on how many apps i can install using froyo's app2sd.
right now i'm just using froyo's apps2sd and have 39 apps total which is approx 83mb.
So i'm wondering what is actually using all my space on my internal phone storage? Is there a way to check this using adb and if so, how?
I've used an app called Quick System Info Pro which shows me the following:
SD Card
7.48GB , 7.00 Free
A2SD
103 MB , 40.58 Free ???? <--- i don't have a2sd script installed, and also don't even have a second partition on my sd card. what is this 103mb total and 40.58mb free referring to?
Internal storage
148mb , 29.59mb free <--- like i mentioned earlier i have approx 30mb left
System
250mb , 130mb free
System cache
40mb , 22.50mb free.
i know i can just install a2sd but i just want to know what exactly is using up all my space? (can i use adb to check each directory/folder on my internal phone storage, and how?)
Probably your cache. Try to wipe cache then see if you have more space.
i already wiped dalvik cache and the regular cache

I believe Cyanogenmod 6.1 supports apps2sd,and it has the option listed under application settings.....just check it up
Why not check via application management in the standard setup menu? There you can just go to all applications and sort them by size.

its not actual apps2sd though, some stuff still gets stored in the internal. Widgets won't work if i store on sd. Are you sure it supports apps2sd? then i can just create a ext partition on my sd, will it work though?

it only shows the apps, what about other files thats not listed in there?
Besides the apps there is not that much on the internal memory. If you don't have that many apps installed, Gmail, facebook, maps, contacts or normal mail will probably take up most of the space.
I'm not familiar with CM so i don't know which A2SD they use, but even with A2SD+ (which requires the ext partition) some part of the app stays on internal memory, however it does not affect widgets or any other app when you mount the SD card. Not sure if you can enable A2SD+ when the rom is already installed, i always have the ext partition before flashing.

apps2sd as in the froyo 2.2 one?
and yes i'm using cm 6.1's apps2sd then, but even though i moved all the apps that i can to the sd(some apps i cant move to sd) i'm still low on storage, down to 29MBs.
Try darktremor's a2sd, though dalvik caches are still on my desire, but i can install alot more apps than the usual cyanogenmod app2sd

Where am I going wrong

Ok . Got s-off last night and partitioned my SD card using recovery console.
I have then flashed a custom cm7 hboot using Android flasher and then tried both insert coin and rcmix roms but still only getting about 120 mb free.
Can somebody advise where I am going wrong and possibly suggest what I should be using.
I basically want new ginger sense with lots of app space.
Thanks

Yes you do. The ext partition is there, you just can't see it. Your storage will decrease the more apps you put on because of the dalvik cache.

hmm can you clarify that a bit? as in, is seeing ~120mb of free space is normal?
I recently flashed the InsertCoin cm7 rom and see that i'm using ~160mb and have ~130mb free. I thought this is normal given that the hboot used was alpharev cm7r3 (~290mb for data)
Though reading this thread makes me wonder, whatever happened to the 1GB ext partition? What is it used for?
A2sd: apps on ext(SD)
Dalvik on internal
Sent from my HTC Desire
Some rarely used system apps are on sd_ext which allows rom to fit cm7 hboot system partition. Also all downloaded apps .apk go to sd_ext, but their dalvik cache (which is from what the app actually runs) stay in internal memory and that makes rom super fast. What you see in settings is true but this space will be taken only by dalVik and that means (with your 120mb) lots of space.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Just wasn't really sure I had done it correctly. Bit of a noob!!.
I also just wanted it correct before adding my files and also flashing custom splash and boot animations.

[Q] Phone showing low internal storage but app2sd+ partition has plenty free

I'm using app2sd+ on my Desire with the Leedroid ROM. The ext3 partition on my SD card has over 500MB free space yet my Desire still reports low internal storage - 6MB and at one point last week it was completely full, ie. apps stopped syncing data as they couldn't write to the storage.
I have taken the SD card out of the phone and mounted it on my Linux computer to see how much space it's using:
Code:
/dev/mmcblk0p2 836M 245M 549M 31% /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74
(where 549M is free space)
Code:
du -sh /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/*
105M /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/app
2,0M /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/app-private
122M /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/dalvik-cache
Anyone know what could be causing this, and how to get the phone to see how much space is really there?
Basically check if the android has moved any apps to the sd cards fat 32 partition by going to manage applications/SD card in settings
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
This why I dont like app2sd.
It has moved a handful of apps to the FAT32 partition on the SD card. But I don't understand why - I have tonnes of space on the ext3 partition that I created for app2sd+, why does it not see that space?
(I didn't want to use app2sd+ either but I have no choice due to the crappy amount of internal storage on the Desire)
It does it automatically so just move as much apps back to the phone as possible then run the a2sd reinstall command

what command is that out of interest?
also some apps automagically try and set themselves up to install to the fat32 partition - annoying... perhaps google should implement a way to choose where you want them installing, but i guess they think they are catering for the majority...
Once u have moved thwdpps from the fat 32 to the phone that command reruns the a2sd script movring app the apps on the phone to the extra partition
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Sorry I don't understand. If I try to move those apps back to the phone (internal storage) it won't let me because it claims there's not enough space available.
However as I showed in my first post there's plenty of free space on the ext3 partition on my SD card. That ext3 partition is supposed to be used by app2sd+ to extend the internal storage.
I'm not sure what a2sd reinstall has to do with it - I'm not using a2sd I'm using app2sd+ (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7473663&postcount=3)

This has nothing to do with a2sd+ script per se. I'd call that a bug in Leedroid implementation.

You have this option in Spare parts for a year or so. I noticed it for the first time in October last year. But it only works for those apps which had hardcoded Froyo a2sd (fat32) capability.
Op, where is your davlik cache? Download diskusage and check what happens. With some 90 apps & stock hboot you should have some 90mb internal. I have about that with my setup from the sig and my 130mb davlik is on /data.
Hi,
In Diskusage->Appstorage shows 319MB for data and 314MB for Applications.
In /data Diskusage shows 132.9MB of data.
I have 5.04MB free internal storage.

Moving to Q&A
I am tired searching months for solution... my Internal memory always comes to 10MB or less.
I have:
HTC Desire with LeeDrOiD GB V3.0.8.2 Bravo
Hopefully it use AP2SD+ right
My Titanium backup says:
System ROM: 262 MB (19,2 MB free)
Internal: 158 MB (16,1 MB free)
SD card: 7,23 GB MB (25,8 MB free) ... this is not problem, I just need to erase bunch of mp3, etc...
SD caRD (a2sd): 697 MB (508 MB free)
LeeDrOiD GB V3.0.8.2 Bravo - Nice room, a bunch of unusefull apps but small, probably not big deal.
I prefer my own apss:
music - Mixing
calendar - Busssiness calendar
RealCalc
ES File Explorer
TeamViewer... Alots of them use soo many Internal memory.
Nimbuz.. Also take too much
A long time ago I have erased flash app... Easy live with that. Always fighting with Google earth update to get it right - to have enough memory before update...
LOVE HTC Desire, but that memory... As you can see I am moding user, like to have my apps and right setup.
TO eassy it, to find solutions for me, some more info for you:
I was thinking about to get different ROM.
I think I can live without Sense - using Mail widget and news widged.. but I think it can be raplaced with other market apps... I liked go launcher EX, but didnt have memory space to play with it - therfore it was erased.
I was reading something about HTC allow more freelly deal with this HTC desire memory problem... Didnt find solutions yet.
The 'solution' I found was to sell my Desire and buy a Samsung galaxy 2.
The internal storage on the Desire is just too small for many users, and the complicated and unsupported hacks to expand it with SD card storage are buggy and error prone.

Yes, I was thinking about that. But I was choosing/looking for my phone soo hard and thinking that this is RIGHT form me... Unofrtunatelly I forgot about memory... My first touch screen phone... (right screen size.. not to big, not too expensive, but new technology- something better, good forum support...) I think you understand.
It is a bit hard for me to buy new one soo early. But I will have to.
OK, I take this as solution.
I ma strongly thinking about to get small or the smallest room which I can get...
Maybe Cyanogen
Any recomendations?

Did you try moving apps to SD from Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications? You could also use Install Manager (there is a Lite free version and a payed one in the market) to batch move apps.
Even with Oxygen r2 HBOOT I also ran out of space. I think you are meant to manually move some apps to SD from the Applications screen, primarily the ones you don't use so much or for when loading speed isn't important.
I moved a few games to SD (some games automatically went on SD, probably because they were over 30mb?), as well as Adobe Flash and Google Maps.
Note: I don't have an ext partition anymore, Android is moving those apps to FAT32.
