I'm dying to get Freexperia/CM to work on my Arc, but I'm running into all sorts of trouble.
First off, I've unlocked my bootloader.
I've followed the info in this thread. I flashed my arc to stock 2.3.4
Now, the moment I try to do anything serious with fastboot, it keeps telling me FAILED (remote: The device must be rooted first). Okay then. Browsing around I find the recovery method. Sounds good, but I have to use fastboot again and the command fastboot boot recoveryARC.img gives the same result: I need root.
So I'm in a strange catch-22 here. I want to root my arc, but to do that, I have to have rooted my arc.
Can somebody please help me?
Check that you did actually unlock your boot looader.

Hi,
I've been reading and reading and reading and I probably havn't read enough, but
I am just straight down curious now.
Is it possible to install kernals and other tweak patches such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249, or install recovery?
I have a rogers sony xperia arc, rooted 2.3.4 with gingerbreak 1.2
Thank you for your time
See the links in my sig.
I have seen your links, however everytime i try to go into fastboot mode, it just charges and the led light stays green, i can never seen to go into fast boot for some odd reason
if your bootloader is locked you cant get into fastboot i have a rogers phone as well and you need to unlock the bootloader first which costs money. or you can wait and see if someone comes up with another way to enable fastboot withough paying
So there is no way of me installing clockwork mod at all? or installing any patches via flashing? how about the flashtool? would that work?
by the way thank you all for taking your time upon looking at this thread and helping me out
Nope. You can currently only use Flashtool for flashing firmware.
Ah, okay hopefully something works out, thank you so much!
I want to change to the MIUI Rom, because i had that on my old Nexus One.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1303443
I've done exactly the same thing, and i'm at step 4. When I type that in, it says:
"FAILED (remote: The Device must be rooted first)"
The problem is that I've already rooted the phone. Anyway I tried to root the phone again with SuperOneClick, but there it said that my phone already was rooted, so I canceled. (which i found from this link)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859&highlight=root
So I don't know how to change my rom, because I've never had this problem. Could anyone please help me? Thanks alot !
Bump, anyone?
Have you unlocked your bootloaders?
Yeah, got it working.. But got another problem now...

Hi all
Ok it's a long story but I think you guys need to know.
Ok I've got a arc s which isn't rooted and bootloader is locked (i think), running the latest stock rom.
I want to get a different rom like CM9 or CM10 because stock rom is almost unusable but I need to unlock my bootloader and root my phone, but everything I try to do those 2 things just fail for some unknown reason.
I have no idea if the latest stock rom is rootable yet, but I've red up that you don't need to be rooted to unlock the bootloader
( I'm not 100% sure on that).
But when I try to unlock my bootloader my phone won't boot into fastboot mode, (I know how to do it but it just goes into the charging screen).
and when I try to root my phone the program i used just gives me a ton of errors and phone isn't rooted when it's finished.
( I used doomloards ICS rooting method )
So I question is
Is there any rom I could flash in my phones current state because I HATE stock rom, I just can't use it without it rebooting all the time.
If so please post a like to the rom
Any help will be appreciated.
Read the stickies, look in the development section.
Sent from my CM9'd Arc
Install CWM and flash a Rom for locked bootloaders (eg. JJ`s Hybrid Rom )
P.s. : Have you checked if your botloader is unlockable ? Have you tried to unlock it at sony website ?
And if you realy want to unlock BL and root your phone... do some more reading. You will find at sony website all the info you need to know about how to unlock your bootloader. From there it should be very easy to flash custom kernel and Rom (custom kernel comes with CWM integrated).
Ok well I've looked a bit more at sony's website and found the unlocking bootloader page http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions
But when I entered the code in the dialler, nothing happened...
Also I've found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642480 which looks useful enough but I follows the thread to the rooting pages
and I looked at them they where the same methods I tried before, but it doesn't work, I just get errors and no root
I've had this problem before, when I was trying to root my phone, It just kept failing.
I saw some threads on installing CWM but they all seemed to require root access. so at the moment I'm ******.....

No good looking at threads for the Pro.
[INDEX][ARC/ARC S]Guides/Kernel/Root/ROMS/etc..call it a COMPLETE LIST Thread
Well thanks for the link and all but I'd prefer to use this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601038
which is the way I rooted it before (when I was running 4.0.3)
But it just gives me errors and not rooting it.
Soooooo,
for years I have spent hours and hours every time I got a new android, reading up on the tips and tricks, root methods etc. and in those years I have managed to brick the **** out of a few ( all ) of those devices. but through xda I was always able to get them back.
well, today isn't one of those days. I got a new M8 last week. and in the span of a few hours I have managed to render it dead I think.
I initially installed the temp root, I don't have my notes with me....
then I installed SU
then I installed twrp
everything was going fine, until somehow I deleted my OS without having a back up recovery.
thennnn, somehow I managed to relock the device.
adb will not find the device, fast root isn't allowed to write to any partitions.
im completely and utterly hosed. right now I don't even have twrp installed, it just boots into fastboot over and over.
ive managed to get s-on back on it and well.....its not been a good day.
id really love to see what you guys think. at this point id try anything, but I feel like with me not able to install a rom because its locked, and not able to unlock it because I don't have an OS, I dunno what to do.
You don't need an OS to run fastboot to unlock it.
Just start at the beginning and make sure you get the recovery for Verizon model.
im not sure where to even start now. the verizon M8 apparently has to have weaksauce and SU to get root. my phone was botoable and i used those on the front end.
id really appreciate any help you guys could offer. right now if i tried to install a recovery it would fail due to the lock . im at a loss

HTCdev Unlock.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
adb push rom.zip /sdcard
Use recovery to flash ROM
Don't panic as long as you can use fastboot, there is always a way to get things back. As said first and foremost you need to unlock the boot loader. You will need the original unlock.bin file then just use the instructions on htcdev to apply the unlock.
Get a custom recovery on there or boot into one.
From there you could try and restore the system partition from a stock nandroid in the stock backup thread.
thanks for the help. I knew I could count on you guys.
heres the main issue with your suggestions. both depend on the htcdev unlock. I tried that first thing when I decided to root. Verizon does not allow their m8 to be unlocked using that method. it always fails. so I will need another way to unlock ;( if I can get past that I feel pretty sure I can get it back together.

Hello guys I hope I can get some help.
I am all new to the mobile rooting and ROMs and stuff like that.
I am not a noon I know a lot about pc but never got much into this mobile tweaks.
Anyway I saw the cm12 ROM in this forum here and wanted to install it.
My phone was already rooted or unlocked when I bought it it has su manager installed so I think it is rooted and unlocked.
Even when I am at the fastboot menu it says UNLOCKED.
BUT still I am not sure if it is ready to try and install a rom.
So I tried to follow the guide on how to unlock the phone at this forum about HTC one v .
And I got stuck at step 9 I think where I had to go to fastboot mode and connect my microusb to the PC.
There I get the little bubble saying USB device not recognized so I can't continue to do anything with cmd.
So the question is .
Do I even need to do this or is my phone already rooted and unlocked with bootloader.
Is there a way to check this things.
Because I installed ROM manager and tried to install the cm12 ROM from the SD card but it doesn't work it aborts the process pretty quickly.
So I am completely stuck..
If you guys would be nice enough to post some links where I can find out if my device is rooted or not or unlocked or not and how to proceed it would be awesome.
I have searched for hours and tryed many things but nothing worked or I got stuck somewhere .
If someone could guide me through this process I would be really grateful .
Thank you

If the bootloader say unlocked, it is unlocked. You don't have to be rooted, as a root exploit only gives you root access to you current rom, most custom roms have root access by default.
Now reboot into fastboot menu, flash a custom recovery (For cm12 you need my twrp-recovery, because selinux support is needed), reboot into recovery, flash the rom-zip and reboot into fastboot again and flash the boot.img in the zip file.
If you need more help just search for a rom-installing guide here in the forum.
