Black Browser?? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just found this while looking around on another XDA forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17960461
Would this be possible on our version of the GS2????

+1
Ooo very nice. I would love to see this on the e4gt. Would def save battery life and I wont wake up my gf with my white browser screen even at the lowest brightness.

Actually I would try this right now, but am not too sure about the proxy settings, etc that you have to edit.

Everything looks likes it would work but I have no idea how to change the proxy host settings on the ET4G.
Does anyone know?

I don't know if this would help there's some proxy setting down there.

Yeah I tried changing those but did not get any black pages

Hey guys, thanks for giving my thread some love. I'm really new to Android but having a black browsing solution is really important to me, so I've spent a lot of time on this.
I'm on the international Galaxy S II (also I use a custom ROM), and my WiFi proxy settings are under Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Wi-Fi settings -> (menu) -> Advanced. My mobile data proxy settings are under Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Mobile network settings -> Access Point Names.
There are some apps on Market that claim to be able to set proxy settings, and other instructions on Google, but I haven't tried any of them. I don't have the Sprint phone so I can't really give more help than that.
Also I think some alternative web browsers support proxy settings. Try Opera Mini or UC Browser or some others, just to see if you can get the proxy working correctly.

PIE "save picture as" saves very small pixilated picture

Hey all,
I've really been trying to find a solution to this and searched a lot. I think it has something to do with the USER AGENT thing, and changing the registry, but I can't get it to work.
So PIE loads all pictures on the phone, automatically squishing it or formatting it for the hermes screen resolution. That's fine, but when I save the image, it ONLY saves it at that small, pixilated crappy resolution. I can't zoom the picture.
I think this is somehow linked to the whole "can't post on myspace" thing, because I can't post on myspace either haha.
I'm using the Black 2.5 right now, but tried Custel's 1.2 and had the same issue. When I used Black 1.2 or 2.0 it was NOT an issue.
This happens whether or not I use PIE Plus.
I know where the information is on the WIKI showing the reg edit to change the user agent so the web thinks you're using a regular desktop browser, and PIE Plus has this option to change in it's options as well, but it's not doing it.
Is there some other registry key or whatever that i'm missing that tells the internet how to format its information?
Again, I searched and looked and tried and hacked and regged haha, but did not find a definitive answer to this. MUST POST TO MYSPACE ON MY PHONE!!!!
Thanks.
anyone? i'm willing to donate some moolah... i need to figure this out before i hack back down to 1.2

thanks. i don't like opera though. the scroll bar on the right doesn't work at all and i don't like the interface.
the only reason i'm persistent here is because it actually WORKED at one time with no problems! all i did was change the user agent in the reg and it worked after i set it to make the net think it was windows xp.
but on these latest roms, it doesn't work.
i know there has to be a solution here.
thanks though!

scroll bar doesn't work? which version were you using? Also have you tried minimo? Not a fan of it personally but might work for your needs?
minislo is too mo... I mean... yeah.
I bumped back down to black 2.0 and PIE is perfect! man I may have to stay here
there's gotta be a reason it works here and not higher...
sorry to up my own thread,
but with black 3.5 now, the myspace posting works, and gifs work...
but jpegs still display as formatted to the screen size, and when saving the images, they are much smaller in file size and resolution.
for example, a normally 111kb file is only 25k when saved.
there has to be a definitive answer to this!! and i can't be the only one trying to look at po... uh, pictures and they don't display well.
I've noticed this behavior when I have the Cingular proxy enabled. My understanding is the proxy compresses images in order to speed up load times. Once disabled, images appear, and can be saved, as they should be.
Perhaps you have a carrier proxy enabled?
ugh... n00b question of the millenium
how do i disable the cingular proxy from black dymond?

Skyfire Browser Questions/Issues

does anyone use the beta version of SKYFIRE browser? i heard its the best browser out there yet
and also you can edit the joggr to scroll up and down on websites right?
Hmm
Interesting!!!
Yet still a skeptic when it comes to giving out my phone #. Also, it goes with the remote server which is a no no for password sites. It would be fun to try it but also limit you.
well yeah but there has been reviews of the browser as well as interviews with the creator of the skyfire browser on youtube
people are waiting for it to release the official version
from the videos, i can tell that its easily the easiest browser to surf the web with on a windows mobile phone
That's just it...many will wait for a final release if they keep their word and won't charge for it. They are hoping big wig mobile companies will pick it up. Keep the middle men happy and still make it a successful browser.
i signed up for the beta last night. cant wait to try it. looks like it could be cool.
I wonder how easy it will be to use without the touch screen or stylus (IE, with the Dash/Excalibur).

I tried to join their beta 1 before. After giving their my phone #, they sent me a SMS messenger saying they have enough beta tester already.
I joined up with them some 5-6 months ago, and yet i havent been invited to either beta....so perhaps someone with a copy could post it?
Good afternoon.Could anyone upload SKYFIRE?
there is no cracked version available because all internet data is transmitted through skyfire where they authenticate the user and deliver the optimized mobile content.

to be honest i dont think a lot of people here have it. if you got it working over wifi post some screens of it or a review or something, let us in on it
i just use this internet3.voicestream.com and name it T-Mobile Web And its good for whatever and i figure that out by myself ... so give it a try and oh yea tha connection is the internet ,,no auto detect ..... and its also good for all operas..

Can you elaborate on these settings? Do you have skyfire and it works with these changes? Are they different or additions to the standard tzone proxy?
My review as i just tried it a bit at home yesterday was that it is much better than opera and IE. I recently tried Opera and i still find myself using the 6.1 IE instead because the fonts and the screen is just much better.
Now if i had skyfire working, i would use that all the time. it is so nice to see the complete web page available. I think it definitely competes with the IPHONE's browser, if not surpasses it. I have no problems with my information showing up on their proxy servers, because how much information are you going to be passing through them, its not like im going to do online banking on my phone. load times were fairly fast, but i was on wifi, don't know what edge will be like.
As far as streaming video, it does work. i went to mlb.com and saw the video play which is cool, however, it does studder a bit when playing, not as smooth as through a pc. but overall, it definitely is an advance in the right direction.
Al Right I'll Explain ......
First : Delete Alll Proxies.....( No Need For Proxies )
Second : Go to Connections.. Create A New Connection Under GPRS..---> Name It ..T-Mobile Web. As It Is.. Access point Is ..internet3.voicestream.com.. no username no password .....matter of fact . just put that in and done!!!.

[Q] controlling your phone from your computer

So I searched but couldnt find the answer. I am looking for the app that lets you control your phone from the computer. Its not screencast or remote desktop. It was an app that would give you an IP address to go to from your computer and up would pop the home screen of your phone. I charge my phone in another room and run wifi tether and would love to see whos texting me and be able to reply among other things without having to get up every two minutes. I had it before and flashed a rom and thought that titanium backup had run but it didnt so I lost it. Thanks for any help.
Well I would recommend Remote Desktop (I know you mentioned it), it is an awesome app that I use all the time, it lets you send sms messages. I think the one you are thinking of is called PicMe. It's ok, pretty sluggish IMO. I really think Remote Desktop is the best app for this type of thing.

edit.I do remember the one I had being a little sluggish so that might be it, haha.
Good thread. There's an app called Browsix that has a built-in sms client. Check it out.
Try webkey

Its as secure as your password. Set your custom login and password and you should be fine.
ehh i like browsix for texts. But webkey is better besides that.
Try This...
I believe the app you may be looking for is called "droid VNC Server"....
I have it and have tested it to work with the Evo.

Truly embarrassing problem.

Hi folks.
Did a search on this but no cigar. The manual keeps this a big secret as well so here goes:
I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to save webpages to the phone. I flat out refuse to believe it shouldn't be possible. I'm positive there is a little trick I haven't tried yet. Even old WM6, being about as stable & reliable as the Greek national economy, had this feature. I don't travel by plane very often but when it happens I usually spend the time on board reading pre-downloaded webpages from a couple of writer sites. The GPRS connection over the north Atlantic tends to be a tad unstable ;-). The browser menu doesn't show this option anywhere that I can see.
Someone please bring me out of my misery and tell me where the function is hidden.
Regards
ELO.

Hit the menu button then add bookmark? Sorry if i miss-understand your question.
So menu--more--save page isn't an option to save the page?
It seems to work fine to me.

Someone Swyped my idea.
I think what they're asking is "is there a way I can download a webpage so I can view it offline later?"
Try Opera Mobile browser. It implemented such a function to allow you save pages and browse them offline.
Sent via psychic transmittion.
Hi y´all & thanks for the interest.
@ equlizer:
If i get the works of this then, what your´e suggesting, only saves the page address. When i´m off-line e.g. on a plane i can only view the page if it has been saved in its intire form.
@ dr.m0x:
This would do the trick nicely, exept i don´t have that menu option. Under menu-more i have: Home, Find on page, text selection, page info, share page, Downloads, History, and finally settings.
I´m running stock ROM 1.32.405.3 rooted.
@ Dazultra2000:
That is exactly what i´m asking. Thanks for claryfying.
@ Teroz:
That is an option of course. I just couldn´t bring my self to believe the feature wasn´t there. Dr.m0x appears to have a menu option that i´m missing. I dunno. Maybe there´s something fishy i my ROM, but everything else seems to be humming along nicely.
Regards
Elo.
I'm running the newest 1.86 and don't have that option.
Firefox mobile has it, it saves the webpage to a PDF file. Fx itself is a tad unstable as it is in a test phase, but the save-to-pdf function works pretty well.
I'm on 1.72 and definitely have that option in the stock browser. I also have Dolphin Browser HD installed as my default browser so maybe that is the reason I have the extra functionality. Not prepared to remove it to confirm though.

Like better than my SGS2 EXCEPT FOR THIS which I HATE

And this has always been a thing with me:
Samsung has industry leading screens but they then DUMB DOWN THE WEB PAGE DISPLAYS TO MOBILE!
At least with my International galaxy S2 I could use a third party browser and change the useragent to desktop.
The Epic 4G Touch DOESN'T EVEN LET YOU DO THAT. F***!
Sound like I'm yelling? GOOD!
WTF SAMSUNG/SPRINT. DON'T YOU THINK THATS PARTLY WHY SOME FOLKS WANT A FREAKIN 4'5" SCREEN....TO ENJOY FULL PAGE DISPLAYS.
Damn. Gotta decide if this is a dealbreaker.
I know a developer will be able to mod this.
(You know the Charge has a useragent setting).
I KNOW I can scroll down and opt for the desktop. Don't wanna have to do that evwrytine.
Btw, I don't use the addressbar useragent script. It doesn't stick and is a pain.
What about Dolphin HD?
wow, I really hope this isnt actually a deal breaker for you.
It's the same way with my Galaxy Tab, and it's a Sprint thing, not Samsung. Certain sites (like NYT) will not go desktop on Sprint despite the user agent setting. Reportedly, you could get it to go to the full site on Verizon by changing the user agent. This did not apply to all sites, just the ones that did not want you to go to the full site on mobile devices.
Well tried boat browser and dolphin HD mini and htc's Maxthon..same
I suppose its a way for carrier to save data load...
I do a lot of work on the go in part working with web sites. This sucks.
Hopefully we'll get it modded.

I believe the tablets do the same thing on Sprint.
so u cant get any webpages to display in desktop mode?? because i just tried it in skyfire, and got the following webpages to load as desktop (they did NOT load mobile):
xda
engadget
yahoo
facebook
cnn
tried on sprint 3g first, and then on wifi (dunno if that makes difference), but it worked on both
So... I just installed Dolphin HD and switched the useragent to desktop and it worked fine...sounds like user error
The user agent change works for most webpages. But certain sites like espn and nyt don't, because they don't want you to. If you deep link, it will go to the desktop page (like "espn.com/nfl"), but the mainpage is mobile only and totally sucks ass.
On my old EVO, in the EPST settings, you could remove the Sprint Proxy from the network config and not have anything filtered.
This is my first Samsung device, so I'm not sure if EPST exists or how to edit those settings.
You had to remove the HTTPPDProxy
I just tried about:debug. Got alot of extra settings but didn't see anything to change the useragent or desktop mode
Edit: never mind i forgot it was about:useragent

I was wondering about that myself being from a string of HTC devices. I swore off Samsung after the moment, the NS4G kinda doesn't count software wise...
...the NS4G, hardware wise, is what convinced me that this is a serious contender and likely winner in this round of superphones....which is almost over, we'll get recess and the new Nexus device in a few months and then late winter is preseason.
Come to think of it if you were to graph that out the Nexus truly would be the, well, nexus...I think I just derped.
