So, I have a mini bluetooth keyboard that I want to attach to my phone using the extra battery cover, epoxy, and some hinges. However, I need the hinges to be especially strong and tight as I am going to attach the keyboard backwards in a Motorola backflip-esque layout so the keyboard doesn't cover the screen. Does anybody have any idea what type of hinges I should look out for, or what type of epoxy to buy, or any other tips of the trade in something like this?

Really? Yo your just asking to end up with a phone that looks like a three year-old put together. But maybe im just under estimating your skills. Got any pics of what your working with I would be glad to help. I've done autobody all my life and am in school now for Computer Engineering so I've got a nack for fabricating. Well, I honestly don't care about the outcome because if I dislike it, I can just buy a new back cover. Hell, the phone came with two in the box if I regret it. And I'm just looking for either a hinge with a hold on itself so that it can support the phone (as I'm pretty much installing them in a way where they would normally just flap around) and some sort of material that can stick with epoxy, considering we don't have a lot of space in the phone's back cover for screws.
have you tried velcro?
also can you post the link of the keyboard you are using?

I'm just using one of the simple mini bluetooth keyboards from amazon. I got it for $18. I like how thin and light it is.

...Did you read not just the title, but the actual post? I am using bluetooth for the keyboard, and now I'm attaching it with small box hinges and epoxy. Wish me luck. xD
I've seen it done before on an HD2 with the same keyboard and it didn't look half bad.
So I am almost finished with it and my results were satisfactory. I messed up a lot so there is a lot of extra epoxy and it doesn't look too good at the moment, but if I can find epoxy remover that is plastic-safe I could clean it up a bit more. Another issue is the way it was positioned that made me have to redo the entire thing. If you bring the keyboard too close to the edge of the phone, it won't fold all the way out and will hit the volume buttons. That is because of the curved design of the phone. I'm thinking of going over the whole thing with spraypaint once I get extra money, as I also had to use aluminum pieces to compensate for the small size of the hinges to attach it to the back (It won't work attaching them from the sides.) When I get it cleaned up (or not, if I can not have people in the thread going "zomg you just ruined your vibrant gtfo") I can post pictures of the basic hinge design I did. If you want to try it yourself, know what you're getting into because the vibrant isn't as square as the hd2.

d00d the nokia blue tooth keyboard comes with a cell phone stand so you stand your cell in your keyboard.
Its what I use. and trust me I use my cell as it was a laptop. I do a lot of remote work from it including shh.

It has no use to me, considering I already purchased and attached the keyboard and the keyboard is supposed to be for text messaging mostly, and carrying a bigger bluetooth keyboard is just inconvenient for me.

Hi guys. I am really interested in buying one of these.
http://www.dodgybastards.co.nz/bluetooth-keyboard-case-for-10-1-galaxy.html
I was wondering if any of you guys own this? If anyone does would you mind giving me your opinion on this case?
There seem to be next to no reviews of this case out there whereas there are a lot of reviews about the zagg and Logitech cases. Unfortunately those brands oonly sell cases for ipad here in new zealand. Thanks
I own this and am quite happy with it. Looks good and the keyboard is a joy to type on.
Two things I'm not very happy about are weight (unavoidable, I guess) and, mostly, that there is no way to use it with the tab in portrait mode. Oh, and I think it is a tad too expensive.
I would have bought the Logitech, if only I could. For the portrait mode. But I don't at all regret having bought the Samsung.
You can see the thing in action on Youtube (mind you, in Italian). I was going to post the link but, as a new user, I can't. Search for "Tastiera originale Samsung per Galaxy Tab 8.9 e 10.1"

thanks for your reply mate, really appreciate it. yeh its a tad expensive isnt it, thats why I wanted some opinions before buying it. I never use my tablets in potrait mode, unless I am reading a comic which is very rare. the 10.1 just looks silly in potrait if you ask me lol
Also, I usually prefer to have it on my lap rather than on desks, does the stand sit stable on laps? because the stand kinda looks weak and unstable. I know it'll be fine on desks and tables but does it slide around when in your lap?
The stand is indeed very flimsy. OK for a table or desk, provided we don't push or pull the keyboard. As for a lap, I hadn't even considered it. Well, I just tried and... no. Absolutely not.
It is sort of possible to forget about the stand and leave the tablet flat. Requires one hand to hold it or it will hit the floor in no time. Not practical at all.
After I bought the Samsung case, I saw a Logitech look-alike on Amazon UK. I wouldn't really risk buying one now because: 1) I already own a very nice keyboard case, and 2) the only sellers offering it have appalingly low ratings. Still, if it works as advertised and one could find a reputable source...
Again, no links. But try searching for "Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard Aluminum Case for Samsung Galaxy Tab10.1"...

hey thanks for the link bro. I've owned similar cases for other tablets before and I really dont like the rubber keyboards on them.
oh and I went ahead and bought the samsung keyboard dock instead of the keyboard case. the dock is great. since it has got the 30 pin connector, the tab slots right in and you dont have to worry about it falling. and most importantly the dock sits stable on my lap and I can type just like a normal laptop. it doesnt move around. I really like it
omg that one is too expensive dude..
maybe you can check Apple bluetooth Keyboard.. quite good man. it's light, good materials and 100% compatible.
Logitech bluetooth keyboard is a very good choice aswell.
good luck bro.
I have the Zagg case and it is pretty great. I also have the Samsung white keyboard which is almost perfect except that it will revert to the Samsung on screen keyboard after using it . This is a pain since I use touchpal.
The new OEM keyboard case looks handsome but not as useful as Zagg.

Yes, it can. There's four little rubber stops that keep the keys off the screen when closed that double as feet when fold the keyboard under the way you described. And while yes, it's pricey, it's the slimmest, best fitting, and best made of the keyboard cases out there.
I purchased the official case cover a few days ago from Samsung. I am shocked about how few reviews there have been online. I could not find a decent video review. I am hoping that the build quality is decent, as my Zagg keyboard (Zaggfolio) broke - the space bar no longer works. I will probably take the replacement keyboard they sent me and sell it on ebay.
By the way, I saved 15% by using the coupon code: Samsung#1 on the Samsung.com website and got free next day air shipping.

Here is my review of the Samsung OEMKeyboard case.
Pro's
Very light, form fitting, well designed. Easy to type on.
Con's
No touchpad, no sd port, no built in battery, pretty expensive, cannot really use effectively in the portrait mode.
Overall, this is clearly superior to the Zaggfolio. .. but pales in comparison to the Asus Transformer keyboard (which is the same MSRP).

Just got this case today and I must say I am completely happy with this purchase.
It literally turns your tablet into a laptop.
Duqjag complains about not having a touch pad however the entire screen is a touch pad which would make a little square panel obsolete and difficult to use.
My only quarms with this keyboard is the left shift key being so small that you'll find yourself with a lot of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ on your screen when trying to capitalize a letter.
Also if there were a way to make certain trigger keys customizable this would enhance the experence too. e.g. the mail button opens the mail app as opposed to the google mail app. Internet button opens the stock browser as opposed to Opera or dolphin.
It stands up on almost every surface without issue and if you fold the keyboard over it also acts as a bottom panel to keep the screen in a face up position.
Vertically it doesnt work but do laptops????
Fork out the cash I say and enjoy the ride. As tablets get better internally, 10.1 will still be a dimension samsung keeps using so i can confidentally say that this case will be transferable to newer models.
Hi,
I've got the Samsung BT-Keyboard-Case here in Germany for a really affordable price - 57,- €, and it is worth every cent. The look and feel of the case is noble, but durable, and when I carry it arround here at my college the I-Thing-users get possessive.
It has a built-in recharable battery which lasts for some 3 days. I use it flipped over as a night stand at my bed, listening to Tune-in radio, I work with it every day, and the cover protects the case perfectly.
The only con is that it doubles the weight of the pure tab, but I really can say that I am happy with it and would always buy it again.
I am looking for keyboard as well, want something nice, shineny neath, but inexpensive. (Not sure it does exist )
Are those aluminum bluetooth keyboard on ebay and amazon so useless? Any suggestion pls.
If i can not find any good review on those no brand keyboard i might have to buy logitech and it costs fortune

Just got my OEM car & desk dock from eBay (they aren't easily available in Canada yet).
First off, I have a T989D aka Galaxy S2 X (from Telus in Canada) and it fits (of course, as the hardware is the same).
Long story short:
Car dock:
The car dock is fantastic. It's a hard rubber that flexes easily enough to get the phone in and out without much trouble. It has a tab on one end to assist.
If you need a car dock, don't think twice, buy it.
Desk Dock
I wasn't sure how they were going to deal with the "chin" on the bottom of the phone. Basically, the dock doesn't have any front-to-back support for the phone... it's not a "slot". However, there is some friction so the phone doesn't flop around. That said, don't be tossing it around with the phone in it, as you'll risk breaking off the USB port that the phone is docked to.
Otherwise, it's great. It doesn't have an active speaker (like some pics show), but a little duct so the phone's sound can get out.
Photos please?

+ 1 and/or a video ?
I have both of these as well. The car dock is a VERY tight fit. So tight that sometimes I can't get the phone out of it without hitting one of the buttons. I don't like that for some reason when the dock is connected and an aux cable is used sound does not automatically rout to the car speakers and instead still tries to go through the phone speaker. Is that normal??
The desktop dock I love. The USB port has just a little bit of give so that I can pull the phone out from the front without using the sides of the phone and hitting a volume button or unlock button.

I bought the multimedia desktop dock about a month ago at the T-Mobile store for $50.00+tax. Looks like you got a better deal online. To tell you the truth, I'm not that impressed with it. I think i bought it because I had just got the Hercules and I wanted all the cool accessories to be even cooler. Lol. Its basically a very expensive phone charger. Not sure. There's a docking part of the mount that slides into the phone's microUSB. Could be a magnet. I don't think it's solely software, because you put any other microUSB into the phone and it won't go into car mode.

This "car mode" you speak of is using the stock launcher I presume which doesn't go into landscape mode without it(car mode). if I'm correct, do any of you know how to unleash landscape mode without activating car mode? I'm using go launcher because it's the fastest launcher I've found that has landscape mode but I'm wondering if the stock launcher is faster.

Just upgraded from my bionic to this sweet phone & ordered the 4200 mah extended w/nfc from amazon for $19.
I made a custom car dock and docking station for the bionic- I was going to integrate HDMI & a usb hub (kind of like this ultrabook docking station) so ppl could use Motorola's Webtop Software more easily... but the # of ppl w/Bionics seems to have diminished extensively.
Anyway, I'm wondering if folks have any dreams for a sgs3 accessory that they'd like to exist.
I want the Mugen dock w/HDMI but it looks like it's out of stock until September... so I may design one myself. lmk any thoughts!

O_O man that printer is just insane. I've seen one in action and in some cases they have them in stores where you can just go an pay a certain amount for the object your printing
3D printers are amazing, and have really come down in price. I remember the first laser printers were in the $5000 and up range... ($5000 on the lower end as I recall)
And now, you can print in 3D ......... soooo cool.

Awesome. One day I WILL have to buy/build a 3D printer, but they're still currently either way too expensive, or way too janky (MakerBot). And then one day a little further down the road: true desktop molecular manufacturing for everyone (nanotechnology).
In any case, here's something I'd definitely design and print for my phone if I had a 3D printer: End caps and/or snap-on housings for my right-angle 3.5mm stereo cable AND my right-angle micro USB cable. Why? Because I often have both plugged in and it's a pain to comfortably hold my phone in landscape mode while gaming with the nubs of each cable connector jamming into my hands. Would much rather have something with more surface area covering 'em. (KICKSTARTER?! $$$ )

I would love a docking station for this beast.
which 3d printer did you get? I'm pricing a few out right now as well if anyone has any pointers...
I desperately want a 3D printer. So many ideas in this thick skull. lol
You should do the inductive charging mod for your phone with the Pre back cover and fabricate a car mount for the S3 with a slot to slide a touchstone into it.
Oh yeah, I'd want one. I'm hoping for something similar when Samsung eventually gets around to releasing their official inductive charging kit unlike the Verizon only one that Big Red just released.
That's a really nice docking station for the Moto btw.

Well if it's something that I think sounds cool I would probably just make it and send you one for free- the material isn't exactly cheap but it's definitely not expensive, either. The design time sometimes takes a while (2-10 hours), though, depending what it is. But yeah just throw down some ideas.
I'm also up to do custom orders for relatively cheap (~$20/hr design time, $3 per ounce printed). You can see some stuff I've done here, here, and here.

Can you print a phone back?

After I hacked my bionic for wireless charging I tried designing part of a phone back (my first print + first design ever, so it looks terrible). Even now that I'm pretty good with the printer & designing things, I don't think it has quite the precision for the fine interlocking mechanism required for the phone back to snap to the phone.
Also, you can see the fine bead of the print so it doesn't look as smooth as china-factory-printed-plastic. (see photo from first post) - so it's better for docks and things like that.

The makerbot replicator has worked extremely well for me! ($1700). It will do 50+ prints without an issue, and until last week the only fixes I had to do were replacing the tape on the platform and cleaning out the extruder's motor. (last week the motherboard blew, but they immediately shipped me a new one free of charge, and now I'm running again).
OK so let me get this right - you have right angle cables and you'd like something to snap onto the phone to essentially cover both cables so it is
a) more comfortable to hold in landscape
b) protects the jacks from damage
is that about right? or do you want it to snap onto the cables themselves

if you give him the 3d geometry file he can print it providing the overhangs are not too bad or it may have to be done in multiple parts.

Yes I can print most things, even if there's an overhang (it just requires wasting plastic to print support material). Creating a design is pretty easy in Google's (actually Trimble just bought it) free program Sketchup. You can send me the file or an STL exported from any other 3d modeling software.

I would love a docking station for this beast.

What kind of docking station? Power only? HDMI too? Landscape? Vertical? How many folks would also be interested?

which 3d printer did you get? I'm pricing a few out right now as well if anyone has any pointers...

I got the Makerbot Replicator for the customer support. With relatively premature technology, I think it's worth it to spend a few bucks extra to get awesome support. They answer requests on weekends and will replace any broken parts promptly & free of charge.
However, I would probably try out the Solidoodle, as it is super cheap and looks good. I do feel bad supporting the company as the founder used to work at Makerbot and literally just stole their business model.

Thanks man. You must have seen my other post where I hacked my phone previously for wireless charging?
Not really sure I see the value to it being wireless charging if it's gonna stay stationary in a navigation dock, though? Would it be for device flexibility (so I wouldn't have to redesign it when I get a new phone)?
I'd like a dock that accepts the phone in a case and also works in landscape

Actually didnt know about your previous mod lol.
Was more or less just thinkin aloud (or in text i should say) about a type of of car dock Id like to see for this and future devices. Im a little tired of buying 2-3 new docks (home, car, office) everytime I get a new phone in all honesty.
Would love for a slim universal car dock with inductive charging. Cable can be pulled from the inductive charging pad/touchstone for devices that require being physically plugged in. Makes things simple. Just get in the car, put the device in the dock quickly without worrying about fumbling wires or which side is your port on etc. When you get out just grab the phone. no worrying about wires, bending the usb connector cause you pulled at a wierd angle etc. you know?
Just figured the touchstone + mod would be a nice cheap base to start with for concepting over a $100ish inductive pad. Maybe even stick a laminated rewritable nfc tag in the center with a nice logo on it to program for carmode/ nav/ music or whatever as soon as you dock it. Maybe even make the dock itself detachable and usable as a desktop dock aswell... Ok ok lemme pause my brain for a lil while. I can keep going on and on about this stuff... lol
I am a mechanical engineer and do alot of 3D work in solidworks. I can sketch things up in 3D if people have an idea.
Could the OP use solidworks or step files to automatically print these? I would really like it to design docks and stand if I know the gap margibs from this markerbot

I have an idea for a case for the sgh-i747. Just a simple 2 piece snap together case. Nothing fancy. Would be nice to see how that material holds up to some of the others I have.
I guess any clamshell style case would work as a template if you could do that and send it it to OP. I have looked for 3d dimensions for them and can't find anything for it.
Thank you

Could you post some links or pics, in private or here of what you mean with clammshell? Dimensions i will get from my own device.

Think you could make a stand for me? I just need one that my phone could sit horizontally, and I'd just plug it in to my MHL adapter. How much would that cost?

Can someone recommend a good, sturdy stand that has enough clearance to allow charging in portrait mode? I was looking at the iCrado Neo but from the pictures, it doesn't look like there's enough height/clearance on the bottom and the connector would hit the surface since the connector on the stock S3 charging cable is pretty long.
Would also prefer something that's pretty stable and won't tip and slide all over my desk when I'm pressing the screen. Also, not looking for a charging dock - just a stand. Any recommendations?
Anyone?
I think you should check craigsdocks.. i havnt got one myself yet but i only read good things about it.. they are handmade and very customizable.. u can make it fit for phones with cases or without, with extended battery,.. kinda everything you want.. and very good quality i think. Hopefully someone can confirm what i said

Looks nice but $68 is a little pricey for a desktop dock. Anyway, I'm not really looking for a dock - just a stand that allows you to charge the S3 in portrait mode.

The nice thing about the CraigsDocks dock is that it's customizable. If you get the Galaxy S4, it will still fit. Heck, it even fits the NOTE II and smaller phones.
So you buy one dock for the next several years & phones.
I have one in my car and it's far & away the best dock I've ever used. You just have to make sure you tighten down the adjustments real good so it doesn't loosen up.
