Modem after rooting? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just successfully rooted my phone.
Running Syndicate with Genocide.
The baseband version is showing S:d700.0.5S.EC05.
is tihs cool? Do I need to grab a custom one?

You're good everything working? I've been successful with gb rom and ec05 modem...if something isn't working post it here and we can walk through a fix.

I am tellin ya, you guys rock with us noobs....
So far so good. Just got my google music up and running (see my other post why I use it).
I am sure I never noticed it before, but while sitting in bed in the bedroom, I am showing full bars, but no 3g. I am sure it is just where I am at but tomorow I can confirm if my 3g is working like it should when I am work. STL has 4g, but I have only seen it like 3 times
Now, one thing I am concerned about is the battery. I went from 97 to 88 now in 20 minutes. Nothing but setting up icons, going through voodoo, downloading my normal apps from the market. Seems kind of fast to me.
Like I said, tomorow when I am at work and I start using it for my music, I will be able to really give it a road test and will report back.
Thanks for all the help here guys.

The Display eats most of your battery. Remember to keep the brightness at the minimum useable for you.

I have found that downloading and installing a bunch of apps in a row will also eat up battery

So does flashing

CM7 android system too high.

Okay so I noticed that even with the Tiamat kernal my battery life hasn't been great. I always see above 60% android system usage. I recently did the "GPS FIX" but I never upgraded my pri or NV. I need some help, I may skipped a step.

I would update all of your radios. Also, I think in settings under privacy, unclick back-up. Also, have you considered turning down how often your phone syncs?
It also could be a rogue app stealing resources... Let's start with my first suggestion, radios are in my Sig.

Okay this is weird, I turned off background data and now no system use. Is that saying it's a rogue app?

Ever since I flashed the GPS fix but possibly after Google+ app. Either way its at 81% usage.

It's still high as hell ATM. 77% consumption. I don't understand. Wish I could get some help.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
There is a fix for it you'll have to search for it I only saw it once
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Someone had a link for me in their sig but they changed it...and I searched to no avail. Sad cause I don't want to ditch cm7 for something so dumb. Just want my GPS to work without having my android system through the roof. Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo is on the other line. -.-
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I had the same problem. Here's the fixes I did before I finally just ditched CM7
I updated my radios (and everything else).
All my syncs were on 4 hour intervals (except weather = 1 hour)
lowered screen brightness
uninstalled facebook, g+ and gVoice (my 3 highest used apps).
rebooted about 6 times
held it wrong
prayed to the gods of android
flashed Synergy RC2
So if you were considering doing those, don't. They aren't the problem.
Ironically, my GPS has never had a problem on any aosp rom (and I've tried darn near all of them), but like you, even with the kernels my stuff just wouldn't work right. I think it has something to do with our phones just not liking the kernel. Give toastch's "godmode" kernel a try or flash back to stock to see if that helps.
Ok so switch kernals or just switch to synergy?

What's your screen on time.
Looked kinda like liteflow might be causing problems?
Cell Standby i think is the one that is coded wrong and is lying, ignore that one.
If you press Android System in settings, battery it will show you the top components being used
Also in dev options look for and check Show CPU Usage. It will show whats using the cpu in the top right of your screen. Watch for what stays in the top few spots in the list.
There may have been something that didnt like the update. Try first uninstalling apps and if that helps reinstall them clean, no data restore. If you continue to have problems backup all data and factory reset. Start clean.
If all else fails use odin to flash the full LH2 fw.
LH2 should be a fairly stable build. Most have no issues and many get outstanding battery life. Im willing to bet its either an app or the way you updated or both.

That's really not THAT bad for a screen on time. I saw your screenshots in the OP, and you were down to 80% in only two hours of being on the battery, but you had the screen on for almost an hour of those two hours; 20%/hr for the first few hours is pretty normal. It's not stellar, but I wouldn't say it's an epic drain that being said, I'm sure you could squeeze some more juice out of it, and prob is just an app causing more drain than usual.
Also when doing a screenshot, it helps to hit the power button first, then the volume, so you don't get the volume pop up every time.

[Q] battery drain problem JB back to stock.

i updated to jellybean LI8 from stock t999 LH2 version, but because of super heavy battery drain i flashed it back to LH2 thru odin.
However i still get same heavy battery drain. i use up 10% every 1 hr just with screen on. before i used up about 3~5% for 1 hr.
i was able to get about 14~16hrs with normal use before, but now i dont think i can even get 10hrs.
it seems that the sim card area gets hot whenever the screen is on, and cools down when off. before flashing my phone was never heated
unless i was playing heavy graphic games..is there a way to completely flash the system files? or to fix this problem...pls help. thanks
Your numbers don't make sense. Need a screenshot.

I did jellybean update thru OTA here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850534, then i reverted to ics using odin and using the stock ota file here http://androidromupdate.com/2012/08/25/restore-back-t-mobile-samsung-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999-back-to-original-ics-4-0-4-t999uvalh2-stock-firmware/

yes the screen % is fine so i dont know where its draining the battery...
i think something wrong with system file because my phone really didnt get warm just from having the screen on.
is the method i reverted to ics correct? or is there another way to completly reset/overwrite my phone back to stock?
If your phone is working, your method wasn't incorrect. If you flashed the stock firmware through Odin, that's as virgin as it gets.
Battery Info and KakaoTalk are obvious culprits. Tell me about your wifi situation. Are you connected to a wifi network?
yeah usually i leave wifi and kakao talk on most of the day but it doesnt drain battery this fast...it just messed it up after the jellybean update., it was 100% this morning, 4 hours and now i got 60%. usually i would probably still have around 85%+
I'm in xquizit v26 and observed that I'm not getting a deep sleep and the battery drain in less than 5 hours. I reflash the rom with full wipe and still have the same issue. I step back and investigate what cause this problem. It seems that when I flashed the kitchen v6 with open vpn cause not to have a deep sleep. With out the open vpn I was able to get a deep sleep. On the first cycle I was able to get the 15hrs battery life. I will continue to observe this because the battery behavior can only be observed after 3 days.
I tried to post this in the ROM section but XDA wont allow it because I only have less than 10 post.

If you can go without, try uninstalling those two apps and see if it settles at all. Also get cpuspy to see how often the phone goes into deep sleep.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
okay so i jus instaled the cpuspy and saw that theres a lot of deepsleep so i guess theres no problem..?
and i think its not the app but the thing with screen. whenever the screen turns on, it gets hot and the batt uses alot..
i tried re-flashing using odin while ago but still the same.
I would suggest flashing wildchlds XquiziT or DJintrigues Frosty JB. They both have done very good jobs at getting more out of your battery while still remaining stable. Being on the full stock leak i doubt you will easily find a way to acceptable battery life. At full stock i kind of remember LI8 being one of the worst for battery.
There are actually multiple causes, some depend on how you use the phone.
Another thing you can do to help hunt it down is get Better Battery Stats.
Also in Settings > Dev Options check show cpu usage and itll tell you what processes are using the processor in real time. You will likely see 2 or more that seem to stay at the top of the list.

i checked the XquiziT's ROM and i think lots of people are saying the battery problem was solved so mayb ill try it with this one, however when i went over the posts it seemd that theres prob with the kitchen? thingy and they took it down. is it possible to jus flash the XquiziT Rom without the kitchen features?
Yes you can flash rom without kitchen. Hes actually working on a new release hoping for today I believe.
Kitchen was taken down due to possible bricks when using wallet and mobile odin.
Also, battery problems are not 100% solved in either rom but are close!

[Q] Possible wifi issue?

Hi,
I am wondering if it is normal that wifi speeds slow down after a certain time. My wifi at home can reach up to 22 Mbps down and say in a couple hours for example it would drop to 10 Mbps. Immediately I would restart my phone and it would be back up to normal speeds of 20ish Mbps. I do multiple back to back tests on speedtest.net app and my wired connections and other wireless devices are consistent.
My wifi does not disconnect and it has no problems connecting to other souces. At work i have the same wifi issues.
I have a Canadian Rogers Note 2. I am rooted and flashed to cleamrom 4.0.5, fully wiped and reset before flash with twrp. I have tried turning off power saving mode during the slow wifi transmissions and still have this issue,
I am lost as to what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.
Yes this is for me as well I have been on clean rom and now stock and it continues to do the same not a huge deal but I just noticed it last night im on mediacom if thats any help

In the meantime I have installed My Data Manager to see if there is any unknown wifi data transmitting while this problem is happening. When I had the phone bone stock I really did not monitor this issue.
I use the international rom and I notice YouTube buffers longer than it should than it chops shortly after. I just tried recycling wifi and now it's snappy again.question now is how long it will last

I have been playing with this issue for a few days now. I can sort of recreate this by leaving the wifi range and entering. This will create that speed drop I described in my first post. By turning on and off the wifi toggle resolves this.
While using My Data Manager it shows no mystery wifi or data transfer in the backgound. Everything checks out in that aspect.

yeah this blows. I don't know where the fault is. Running cleanrom 4.0.5 with its kernal. I don't believe I have really modified anything other than flashing the rom and a few zips here or there.
Normally it isn't a big deal but it really seemed to cause issues when syncing for the first time with dropbox yesterday. I had to keep restarting wifi. I think part of that was dropbox but 4 gb took literally hours to get done
I don't know if it happens on cleanrom 4.2.5

I had a very similar issue with Cyanogenmod with the Chomp messaging app installed. Uninstalling it solved my problem. Do you have this installed, by any chance? If you go to Settings --> Battery, what do you see sucking up the most power?
I dont have chomp installed, and its showing my screen is taking most the power. The drain even happens when my screens off so i dunno lol. i may just buy a new battery to see if that helps, thanks for the reply though!

I feel your pain. Ive had this problem since the inititial stock ICS update though, not when i switched to cyanogenmod. Long story short, I tried just about every rom and kernel available to no avail.
Turns out the problem was my phone wouldnt deep sleep for very long, even when idle for hours. I reverted back to stock GB 2.3.6 and that seemed to work. I left my phone idle for about 10 hours (During the night and morning) and it only drained 16%. After calibrating the battery it lasted even longer. I know you hate stock, so heres another possible cause/fix: The process mediaserver seems to be draining plenty of peoples batteries. I found the attached .apk somewhere on XDA and its supposed to kill mediaserver and keep it from restarting. I havent tried this personally but it appears to work for other people.
If the kms app doesnt work, take a quick look and see if your phone isnt liking nap time-- If thats your problem, here is the link for stock GB (Rooted, of course). The download contains Odin and the .tar file you need to flash. Dont worry about wiping your data or anything. Just go into download mode and let odin do its work.
Good luck
--Edit--
Found a great ICS rom based on el29 so it will deep sleep. Called The Blu Kuban, I'll post link when I'm home. Fixed my issues and then some, definitely worth trying. Use the Nova launcher not Apex. Much better.
