OTA updates if you're rooted? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I know the rooting method on this phone seemed a bit unconventional to what I was accustomed to coming from a couple of HTC devices, so I'm wondering how OTA updates are going to be affected. Rooting was as simple as flashing to a rooted kernel, and flashing back to the stock kernel. Seemed super simple to gain root. Anyway, I read that there's a fix coming soon for our device that will address reception issues (LOS problems?) and if it's an OTA update, will we be able to simply download and install it? I don't mind if it causes us to lose root because then you could just re-root again--I just dont want it to brick my phone LOL Thanks for any feedback!

I was just wondering this today as well.....

The rule of thumb is never take an OTA when you're rooted. You never know what lies under the surface from what they tell you it covers. It's been my experience that a "safe for root" version is usually out within a half day.
.....

Right now I'm running the Starburst ROM.
What would be the process I'd have to go through to apply the OTA update if one became available. Would I simply have to flash a stock, non-rooted kernel and apply the update while the rest of the ROM is installed?

U cannot have a custom rom or kernel installed for an ota. U probably wont even get the notification on a custom rom. Tje ota uses the stock recovery and it makes sure all of the bloatware is still installed. If its not it will fail. Don't worry bout ota. After it is released there will be a stock tar to flash in odin. Ota is very simple with samsung phones. Just flash the odin tar and you will have the update.

Right but... I don't have a custom rom or kernel.... but I have root...?

So even if I'm on a custom rom I can just odin the update .tar file without messing up custom rom or erasing how I set my phone up?

As long as all the bloatware is installed and not deleted then it should work but u will lose root. Trust me ota will be better to flash through odin once the developers root it.

The stock tar that comes from Samsung erases data. Best thing to do would be if u didn't want data erased is wait for an update.zip and flash in cwm.

Your not with this phone either. U needed a pc to root the HTC phones. Once rooted u don't need another computer unless u flash something that soft bricks the phone and u need to use odin. That's it.

[Q] Rooted phone attempting OTA constantly

I'm running a rooted epic with Froyo EB13
with Baseband version EC05.
I'm not running a custom kernal
The phone every week will download the OTA update, it obviously wont install, I get the little red triangle after it begins a reboot.
I pull the battery and it reboots into CWM.
How do I get this to update?
Either reinstall all stock apps, and revert your baseband. Or just forget it and odin to ec05
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Thanks Chris,
Do you know where I can retrieve the baseband from?

[Q] How to restore "Stock" recovery and unroot without reflashing the ROM?

Is there a way to replace CWM with the stock recovery?
Also, is there a way to unroot?
I am currently on EC05 rooted with CWM purple but I'd like to unroot and remove CWM without having to reflash and spend hours reinstalling all my stuff.
Yes. I can't gve an exact guide right now, but you should delete superuser.apk and /system/xbin/su or /system/bin/su. Then find the stock recovery

DCrocks put out a stock recovery flash. Then I guess you would remove Superuser. Why do you need to do this? If you go to Development in the stickies there is the How to fix a semi-bricked Epic. Dyeha posted links for this in one of the last posts.

I'd like to use the OTA GB whenever it arrives. I'm on stock EC05 except for root and CWM, so I think reflashing stock recovery should allow the OTA without losing my setup.
I refuse to have stock anything on my phone; I continue to wait patiently for a GB that is fully modded and hot rodded

I tried the above zip, but it caused my phone to hang on restarting; only odining something could get my phone back.
Like the above poster, all I have is a rooted stock EC03 (with no system apps removed whatsoever), and all I want is to update to EI22, either OTA or from the Google download, without losing my data. Does anyone know of another way to restore stock recovery to help make this possible?
Thanks much!
I wish I could do the same since I'm on stock rom + root. But since I'm already getting the OTA gingerbread prompt, I'm going to go ahead and try to ODIN to EC05 then upgrade to Gingerbread then root again.

That will certainly work. I did it and it worked fine. But I didn't want to lose my settings and data, and I'm not adept enough with Titanium Backup, so I didn't keep things that way. Still trying to find a way with keeping my settings/data...

Do you know if I'll lose data? Also, If I install the update now, is there a way to regain root once I lose it? Thanks.
All I want is root and tether
i dont think they would be stupid enough to push out an update that would force everyone's phone to lose all their apps and settings, unless of course that update was an ICS update.

Install OTA, then download and install busy box and superuser app. Then use Odin to flash rogue stock ek02 kernel/recovery in development section. That should be all you need to do, to gain root.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
first of all the update is not going to flash if you are rooted.
second if somehow you flash it just root like you did the first time.
updates don't wipe data but if you try to flash it on a rooted/non stock phone you are going to have to wipe and reflash anyway.
Hmm, hopefully I get this updated soon. Thanks for the help so far
Ok, I've been reading in the threads mentioned in the posts above and still feel somewhat confused. Apparently in the thread with "dump" in the title, I have to be on a stock EG30 "odexed" rom to flash the EK02 update.
I am currently on stock EG30 "deodexed" rooted rom. So do I need to first revert back to a stock odexed EG30 rom? Then odin the ek02.tar? Then find a root method?
So they've started releasing the OTA?
Got my notice this morning

Man why dont you just update with one of the rooted roms in the forum instead of dealing with all this what should I do and I am confused. All you need is here and if you are rooted already why are you worrying about the OTA..
I believe FOTA apk will stop you from seeing that. There is a disable update script you can run that freezes that(pm disable com.samsung) link here ). I mean way more options than what to do is says I have the update

Getting error on new update LG8

I got the little pop up that there was an update so I installed it and it said the phone was going to boot in 6 seconds or whatever, after that the phone booted into CWM and it said it failed install. Now every time I check for an update it says there's no update right now. Am I the only one with this problem? How do I fix it? Is it because I'm rooted? I'm on the stock rom by the way.

you don't need to flash the modem if you don't want to. Although I think (opinion only, and they vary between user) LG8 is a very good modem right now.
Once you flash modem, you will keep it until you revert or flash a newer modem or a rom specifically tells you it also provides it.

So flash the DeOdex version via CWR.
Then flash the Modem.zip via CWR.
Then use Odin and flash "Other Parts" .tar file and that's it?
Will there be any differentiation between going this route versus unrooting -> OTA update -> re-rooting?
The way I flash I got the legit update and flash with custom recovery and before the reboot flash the team win root file and ur done then reboot and ur done u have the hole update and firmware and radio and rooted and u keep your custom recovery

Questions with ota and root

long time evo user, noob at the s3. I rooted my dad's phone because he needed wifi tether, but he is freaked out about accidentally applying an ota and bricking his phone. Can I disable ota checks or restore the stock recovery while keeping root? Thanks!
You can always install OTA RootKeeper and have it back everything up. I used it for the first time last night before updating my wife's S3 and it worked great.
Did you have a stock recovery or can you install the updates over a custom one?
recommended way
Is to just flash the lg8 modem posted in the development section and then suppress the update notification by flashing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1244277&d=1344225893 or by flashing the legit update and flashing this after to keep root http://shabbypenguin.com/k0/ecm/TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip. if you didnt modify system you can copy the legit update from cache to sd and flash in cwm

No you wont brick. And the mod only makes u look up to date so any future update will come thru as normal.
If u hit install with cwm And ur system is unmodified it will probably finish but will get rid of root thats what the root from recovery zip is for. Def no brick tho.
Thanks soo much Okay so if he just accepts an update the phone will automatically update through cwm but will get rid of root? So he has nothing to worry about except losing root if sammy sends out an ota.

Ya and thats saying that the update finishes. Worst that will happen is root is gone. If the system was modified or something dont match the checks the update does, the update will fail and nothing will change. But i can assure you, it will not hardbrick u. Ur In samsung country now lol and that has never ever happened with a samsung to my knowledge. Like i said In first post tho definatly recomend coming here for the update (usually a modem) flash it manually, and avoid the ota altogether. But hitting the install button wont hurt you.
I've found this is much easier. Zedomax has a rooted LG8 stock ROM up for download. Just flash, clear cache and you're ready to go. (note that if you have any flashed mods such as a CPU editor or the Google Now on ICS mod you will have to reflash)
