I have updated to 2.3.4 and i was in the service menu (press *#*#7378423#*#* ) and it has an option to turn on/off HDMI and also it gives a few setting to mess around with.
So my question is has anybody tried this? or if you have a Micro USB to HDMI cable hanging around can you try it and see if it works.

there is a HDMI port just below the left touchpad, but they concealed it and marketed it as no-HDMI device to avoid further competition with the Arc.. only expo PLAYs have the HDMI port.. besides, if you added HDMI to the Play, it would be the all-around phone overshadowing the arc, which i suppose, is marketing strategy at its best..
Sux Bout no hdmi but imo we shoudlve got the panaroma apk

In which sense is asking for proof being a prick? You need not to tear up your Play yourself, you can show us someone else doing it with his own retail model.
And about why there is an HDMI menu under that code, given that the whole 2011 Xperia range comes with the same architecture, it would be fully unsurprising to find that menu in Xperia Ray, mini, Mango (mini pro), and Active, which are the phones without HDMI capability.
So Sony Ericsson is hiding HDMI and an FM Radio from us? I have seen the FM Radio app and tried to install it, but it failed.

The FM-Radio app won't ever work as it's disabled at hardware level, though it supports it. You'll need some dev to enable it, prob in a kernel, but don't think it's high on the to do dev/modding list
SE should've had the HDMI on our devices at release, but they chose not to, nothing to do about that really, though it defo would've been nice with that feature

Hi there,
im very new to this forum so i apoligise if i sound about naive with my question.
What it is was very set on buying a Desire for my upgrade on orange but was very put off by the fact there is no tv output capability. This is something i really want and i was wondering is there any roms or tricks i could apply to a htc desire to allow it to connect to a tv. As i really want a phone that will allow me to play movies that iv downloaded on my tv set.
if not then im going to have to get the samsung galaxy s.
any help with this problem would be great :-D
your post is a little confusing, you said you want a phone you can connect to the tv to play movies downloaded on your tv? you mean movies you have downloaded you would like to play on your phone and output to TV?
This is not possible on the desire there is no tv out.
lol sorry thats what i meant.
yes i would like to connect phone to tv so i can broswe internet and play movies on a bigger screen.
so does that mean i will defonatly need to get the samsung galaxy s :-(
shame i really liked the sense ui interface!

most lcds and plasmas come with a usb . so can easily view videos and photos .
like myself on bravia 40ex500
As seen here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/nexus-one-gets-usb-host-driver-from-a-dude-with-an-oscilloscope/, someone uses his N1 as an USB-host.
With the DisplayLink USB-to-DVI adapter it is possible to connect your phone to the monitor, although I don't think it will support a high bandwidth (for movies).
if you pick away at the plastic on the right side of the phone there is a hdmi port under there
Yes my TV has USB too and it can be viewed if you attach as usb storage but that is not what the original question is asking. They are asking for TV output as i am sure your TV cannot play xvid or other codec files on the fly via mounted usb.

Don't know about your tv, but my samsung 40b630 could decode xvid and mkv on the fly from a usb storage device.
Not many tvs have usb input, but loads of devices that are plugged into your tv do.
For example, my ps3, xbox, and freeview box all have usb input and are capable of playing divx from usb mass storage.

Still would be a cool but pointless feature if it existed!
HTC's Windows phones, at least most of them, have the ability to output video using the 3.5mm -> TV-Out adapter. The Incredible uses the same CPU as the Desire and can output using the USB port. My guess would be that the Desire maybe has the hardware support, but most likely not software (missing option in settings for one). Obviously, this is a big maybe.
I wouldn't incline towards the "Because it's not on the website it doesn't have it". Looking at the specifics of the Snapdragon chip would definitely help, as if the feature exists it should be there, and I doubt that the hardware would specifically be removed from the chip because HTC 'requested' it. It would be too expensive I imagine (or maybe I'm wrong). Could be that it might not be wired into USB/3.5mm on the phone's board, who knows... (For example they never noted that we have 802.11n, but seems like we do. Among other devices that could be used as other examples.)
End point; someone with the relevant knowledge and skills would need to have a good poke around the device...
@mercianary In that photo, it showsta that device dont have HTC Sense. So its some else phone like Droid X

It's not a deal breaker, the EG4T is superior, but i do like this one feature from the Photon. When you connect it to a TV, it allows you to boot into Ubuntu. Essentially, the one at my sprint store, a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard is connected. I can browse through the full Firefox and even install an office application. This would be nice on the EG4T. I know you can install Ubuntu on the phone, but the Photon does a nice job as switching it over when connected to the TV. All in all, i love my Epic Touch more!
Who cares about Ubuntu when you could mirror to a TV and use Bluetooth keyboard and mouse still. Lol is that even a gripe?
That's software and could happen if a developer was interested. I wish the phone had a built FM transmitter so audio could be transmitted to any FM radio. Also if it had both GSM and CDMA it would be a truely great phone be.

Hey everyone,
im using an r800i, and whenever i go to plug in new earphones, mostly the ones with controls or microphone or both, it says accessory not supported and ive looked around and havnt seen much about this topic, is it possible to get an app that can fix it or change the jack port, cause this rules out quite a few good types of headphones/earphones....
It's been discussed some times, but it's not a hot topic. The issue comes because of the Jack plug of the Xperia Play not following a conventional standard. If you try to use the headphones which come with the play in other devices, chances are that the sound will be horrible.

It... could, but that is certainly beyond my knowledge.
Your phone should have come with an adapter, which will make other headphones compatible. If it didn't, you can find those adapters through different sources, such as eBay.

I'm also curious about switching the jack out. I am about to take my play apart and rebuild it with some custom parts, and if it is at all possible to switch out the jack, or even put in some kind of micro adapter, I would. I've been searching the web for a few hours now with no success, so any help would be appreciated.

My 'Play was on Android 4.0.3 using the NXT Gaming ROM, and I never received this message, and I could easily play the music through my earphones (they have a mic-in and a controller, pretty expensive earphones..).
Now that I've reverted back to the stock ROM using Sony's Emma, I am now getting this message again.
This support seems to rely heavily on the ROM/Kernel, NOT the hardware!
Is there a way to get around this without having to upgrade back to Android 4.0.3 again?
I don't use my device as a phone anymore, but as a portable emulator for GameBoy games (it works extremely well doing this) and MyBoy (emulator) has a bug with Android 4.0.3 where the game doesn't write to the SD card when saving.
Since my earphones decided to go on an adventure to the washing machine, I have replaced them with 3 different earphones - every one of them working like a charm. I only had problem with my Beats on my stock rom, but after ICS they were working fine too.
is there one for our phones? a universal one that works with all android phones would be better, since ill be getting the s3 in a bit.
There is a ihome that charges android phones but the audio doesn't go through the dock. You need to plug in the 3.5mm jack for the audio. It's an alright dock, i guess. Only bad part (for me) is that the audio turns off if i turn off the screen to my phone for some reason.
There are docks from Phillips like AS111/12 (and some bigger ones)
Audio by bluetooth
I use the above by myself with my S3 and the app AtomaRadio as an alarm clock.

Hi,
I work for GEAR4. We just announced the AlarmDock Connect - the first alarm clock dock for Android that uses only the USB cable to connect to the phone.
http://www.gear4.com/android/
It has a USB port on the back so if you need to use a tablet with a proprietary connector, you can.
It charges (obviously), plays audio over USB (Gingerbread 2.3.4 through JellyBean) and also sets the time and alarms from the touchscreen.
Not enough? Oh yeah, it also has an FM tuner. Control the FM tuner and presets from the touchscreen.
It's been designed to work with tablets, phones, wherever the USB port on them may be.
Have a look - feel free to ask me questions.

is a video engadget took of it.
There's a recessed channel that the bottom edge of the phone sits in, or tablet rests in. There's a hole that goes through, so you can pass the micro-USB (or proprietary USB cable) through, or just rest its connector in.
We've gone this route using the USB cable instead of a connector like Philips did because we want to be compatible with as many Android devices as possible. Some (Samsung, Asus) have unique connectors that aren't standard micro-USB connectors.
Thanks. Bigger in the video than I expected. I am not clear on this aspect of the forum rules, but I hope your posts are not seen as advertising, since you are making us aware of a product and not attempting to sell it, plus you are adding to this discussion. Anyway, I guess the only issue I have is that my Sprint Epic 4G Touch hasn't even been updated to ICS, so I don't know if it will ever be upgraded to Jellybean... so I would have to use your app to listen to music and couldn't use something like Ambiance, for example? I suppose there is no way around this limitation?

Now that the source code has dropped, are any developers considering adding USB OTG/Host Mode anytime soon? I'd be willing to donate if someone got it working or was actively working on it.
For anyone wondering what this is: USB OTG/Host Mode allows you to connect other devices to your E4GT (IE: Flash Drive, HDD, Keyboard, Monitor, DLSR Camera, etc.) and use/access them. It is supported by the International SGS2 and the US Carriers, but for some reason Sprint disabled this functionality in the kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802740 credit for this link goes to dberend! It's a usb otg helper link, but our phone are missing some modules if I understand correctly. They end in the file extension ".ko"
Last I heard Agats kernel was recognizing that a OTG device was connected! I'm not sure if it is working completely yet though.
Responses are appreciated!

USB OTG/Host Mode lets you connect a USB device to your E4GT, like a Thumb Drive, External Hard Drive, Keyboard, xBox Controller, etc. It's useful for a variety of reasons.
If this is in the wrong section, will a mod move it? Thanks in advance!

Yeah its a very useful feature. I heard a few people mention the E4GT supports it, but that it was disabled in the kernel
It doesn't appear that very many people are interested in this, should I let this thread die?
i am still interested in this
I would use this function for sure.. even though you can already make these by combining a power cord with some kind of microUSB-to-USB adapter.. basically a "powered" mUSB-to-sUSB adapter..
Before I read about them, I bought an adapter that I thought would work, but not the right one.. then I read about making them yourself is possible.. but I never tried it yet..
If they were an already built accessory, I would use it to mount a multi-port USB hub, then connect a keyboard and mouse.. I of course would need to figure out how to use both the HDMI out AND the USB hub.. it would be seriously sick to use your phone literally like a mini PC!

The SGS2 International and SGS2 from other carriers supports it, but for some reason Sprint disabled it in the Kernel? I'm not 100% why its not yet supported..... all I know is that its possible, and I want to be able to mount my Flash Drive, HDD, and plug my phone into an HDMI converter for my HDTV and bluetooth a mouse/keyboard combo.... mini-PC, like you said
I added a poll to see what level of interest people have about this

Glad to hear it

Very interested, there is an app for controlling Canon DSLRs that I want to use which requires this.
Thanks for not flaming guys. I'm moving this to general as it looks like it could become more of a discussion thread.

I am also interested. I bought a few of these usb cables on ebay- but none worked. I would like to use a usb keyboard...which right now I am considering buying another bluetooth keyboard.
I'm also extremely interested. Would be very awesome.
