When to partition? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the HTC Evo 4G. I am currently rooted and I am running the latest FreshEvo rom.
As of recent I have been getting the low-space error on my phone. I really do not have much installed and I use Apps2SD.
I am considering swapping to a new ROM today or tomorrow.
My question is: When do I need to partition the SDcard?
With Gingerbread or Sense 3.0?
I am hoping I was supposed to have to do it before upgrading to Fresh's ROM because I find it hard to believe I am actually low on space.
Thanks for the input guys!

I have never used Fresh Roms, so as far as that goes, I don't know, but you partition your SD card when you want to use a script like DTA2SD that will install all of your downloaded apps to the SD card.
It is recommended that the SD card be at least a class 4, but I have used a class 2, and most apps run fine.
It doesn't really matter when you partition the card, if the rom you are using has a built in a2sd, it should automatically detect the partition, and transfer all apps to the sdcard upon first, maybe second boot. If the rom uses DTA2SD, you can go to the terminal emulator and type "a2sd reinstall", or maybe "a2sd install" I can't remember which at the moment. That will reset everything, and move all downloaded apps to the sd.
When you partition your card I recommend you wipe dalvik, though it is not necessary.

Cool! Thank you very much.

I've been partitioned on every ROM since I first discovered DT A2SD months and months ago....
It's really the only way to go.

I'm going to be partitioning my SD tonight as well. I've been getting the low space notification too, as the new Flash program is something like 17 MB of space, and I'm not giving up my Sense that easily. Hopefully all goes smoothly.

Just remember that you will lose ALL information on the SDCard when you partition, so back it up first!
Also, remember to upgrade to ext3 after the initial partitioning.

Bringing this back up.
I did the partition correctly. I tried a new ROM and I really dislike it.
I want to use another ROM but it does not have the Apps2SD (Baked-in) how would I go about using Fresh's ROM but get the Apps2SD thing to work on the entire ROM?

app2sd on Cyanogen 7 (2.3.4)

As I need more space on my internal memory I'm messing around with app2sd and came across a couple of questions:
which a2sd script is preferred on cm7 2.3.4: darktremor or firerat?
which method is preferred: move apps or move dalvik cache?
I formatted my sd card with two primary partitions so far: 1st one is fat and second one (512 MB) is ext3 for a2sd. rather use ext3 or ext4?
Thanks for any help.
Best regards,
SoulStyle
I didn't install any A2SD scripts and I can move anything to the SD card.
(cm 7.0.3)
1) I have been using Darktremor, and it works well.
2) Depends on your SD Card. If it is fast enough, you can move the dalvik as well. Personally, I move apps only.
3) Although EXT4 is supposed to be faster, on the Wildfire, the gains are probably negligible, if any,.
Thanks for the input
My first try with DTa2sd beta 04 went terribly wrong. After install some apps have simply gone missing and a a2sd remove didn't bring them back. The following a2sd reinstall gave my phone the final punch and left it unbootable and I had to pull the battery and do a complete reinstall. So I learned the hard way that nandroid and titanium backups do serve a purpose
Any idea what could have gone wrong?
Btw, is the a2sd option in cyanogen 7.1 settings compatible with DTa2sd?

Same thing with me as well.
I tried partitioning with rom manager and recovery. Tried different ext sizes (128 , 256, 1024) with 0 MB swap. Partitioning is OK. But after running the DTApps2sd script from recovery, the phone gets stuck on the splash screen. Don't know what's wrong. Still not solved.
Use an older version. (Atleast Beta 3, or the last stable version). Beta 4 causes issues.

[Q] dta2sd

I flashed synergy rsl1
I have a 16 gig card partitioned per directions in thread.
I installed dta2sd and after reboot all my apps were GONE.
Where did they go?
If they are on the ext3 partition how do I look and see?
How do I get them back?
Go to terminal and type
su
a2sd reinstall
It should reset itself.
After that wipe cache & dalvik

I made the partition prior to installing dta2sd.
It was only after dta2sd that all my apps are missing which i think they transfered but not being reconized.

Isnt there a FAQ or walk through somewhere to get people running Synergy RLS1 + Ext3 on their SD? If not, there needs to be one. Wiping and Flashing the ROM is easy but I can see where people get confused creating the partition then installing a2sd, etc. A good Synergy + Ext3 setup in step by step walk through would prevent a lot of these threads.
This one is pretty good when it comes to the basics of formatting/partitioning before a Synergy install.

A new user may not even know what "terminal" refers to. A good Synergy + Ext3 step by step walk through would prevent a lot of these threads. It's been discussed a ton in the Synergy thread but its so huge and bloated its hard to get anything useful out of it.

Totally agreed!!!
Its way to confusing.
I think my partition may be messed up... Is there a way to start over from scratch? I can't even see the partition is there. I was going to remove the partition thru a windows program partition manager but it doesn't show up. Just shows up as a 14.8 card. In windows explorer it shows up as 11 gig card I know its not going to add the partition to it but... still it should have showed up in the partition manager.
Back to a2sd
I tried reinstall and repair and it won't work. I also think somehow i d/l and older version.
I tried some other commmands and i got an error that it couldn't find the correct directory or some verbage i can't remember.
a2sd repair ..... got me EXT partition not mounted
a2sd reinstall..... got me ext sd not mounted
Any suggestions on what i should do?
Windows isn't going to help you in seeing the EXT partition (since Windows doesn't natively support any Linux partitions). You'll need a Linux machine or you can try to adb into your recovery.
If you do ADB into recovery, first thing you should look for is a program called parted in /sbin. If it's there, you can use that to remove and install a new EXT partition (sorry, I don't remember the exact commands off hand).
Darktremor may not be mounting it as it may not actually see the correct block device. It really depends on the version you are using.
To find the version, type a2sd help

[MOD] DarkTremor (DT) a2sd on Synergy and Kingdom ROMs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126626
The Synergy rom has the CM a2sd script built-in so if you create an ext3 partition PRIOR TO flashing the Synergy rom, your 3rd party apps will automatically be stored on the ext3 partition upon installation. There is a specific version of DTA2SD for Synergy that can be found in the Synergy Updater app that comes preinstalled when you flash Synergy. The 'primary' reason for its use is to move the dalvik from the SD card back to internal storage and eliminate lag that may be bothersome to some people. I hope this clears up any lingering confusion. As for what happened to the apps, I can only 'assume' that the OP flashed a version of DTA2SD not specific to Synergy.

Is that Synergy-specific version of DTA2SD *only* available through the Synergy Updater? I ask because I have not set-up the Synergy Updater yet (requires server addresses, etc.).
Thanks!
OK, so I figured out how to get the Synergy version through the updater.
Flashed it successfully.
Seems as though just flashing it, I lost about 130MB of internal storage. Does that sound right? I went from close to 300MB, down to about 170MB. Is the Dalvik cache that big?

[Q] Help with getting custom rom and apps on SD to work properly

Hi,
I know this properly have been asked many times ind here before, but I hope someone can help me out anyway.
To solve the classic problem with "low memory", I tried to root and install CM7 to my phone. Which I did manged to do, also more then just one time. But I allways run into the memory problem later on. So I read a few more threads, which said that I just use S2E and A2SD together. I even installed A2SDGUI.
But know matter what I do, I allways sees the problem with "low memory" eventually, perhaps 4 months later perhaps sooner. To my understanding, this should not be a problem, when you use S2E and A2SD scripts. Which make me think that I haven't done it right.
So my wish is that someone can give me a detailed manual to follow, so I can get past the f...... memory problem, and especially how to test to se if it works.
My SD Card is a Samsung 16GB class 10 card. I know your not excited about class 10 cards, but I'l give it a go, and I'llthink I have a smaller class 8 at home.
I like CM7, but as CM is my first and only custom rom I have tried, I can't say I don't like the others. So I'm not bound to any version, I just want to get the newest possible version of Android, which is fully functioning.
Hope someone can and will help.
Pick any ROM you want, open the .zip file, go to /system/etc/init.d/ and delete the 10apps2sd script (it can be named like this or something very similiar), if there is no a2sd built then it's even better - dont do anything.
Now download - http://d-h.st/1vK , place it on the root of sdcard.
Wipe everything, make sure you have 1-1.5GB ext3 or ext4 partition (i suggest 1GB)
Flash the ROM, and then without leaving recovery flash the above a2sd script. ( http://d-h.st/1vK )
Voila, done you have 1 - 1.5GB internal memory. (depending on how big you ext partition is)
Keep in mind this script will keep all kind of app data on SD, so it might be slower (most a2sd scripts keeps /data/ partition on internal memory for performance reasons)
But since you're looking for a unlimited space it should fit you.
If you dont know how to flash a ROM, or ROOT then you need to read some flashing guides first.
Well I would like both when some app are on the internal memory, and other on the sd card. Cause some apps don't work well, when on sd card. So if there are a way to make this happen, it would be great. But that isn't the case is it?
Any I coming to try this.
It seems to be working, but when I through Titanium Backup restore a game (Big Business), I can't start that. It begins to load, and the switch back to startscreen. Then it switchs back and forth, before it eventually stops the game.
Is that because the backup is from another setup, with a2sd's?
Try to remove the application data and try again.
Nope, that didn't help

A2SD with Cyanogen v10 rom

Greetings,
I've just given cyanogenmod10 a try, after 2 years of having the same 2.3 rom.
All is going well, but even after 'installing' a2sd, I only have 150mb of app space. Needless to say, after 5 apps, it's full.
Is this normal? I had tons and tons of apps with my previous rom.
Thanks in advance!
Install m2sd, and move dalvik to sd.
You should ext3/ext4 partition on sd card. The rom will use that for phone apps. Btw even after that you will still see internal ram as 147m, but don't worry a2sd will use ext partition for apps and you can install many apps without any issue of memory.
Same rom working great for me
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Thanks for the replies!
I'm a bit stuck now as there is no rom installed on my phone and my sd card is empty. But I'll put a rom on my sd card tonight with another phone so I should be ok for that.
My problem still remains though.
I can't get a 1gb partition. I have tried external methods with my pc: partition wizard, easeus partition and those 2 can indeed partition my sd card, but when I unplug the usb cable, my phone says the card is damaged and needs to do a full format. After that my partition is gone.
The other method I used was to get s-off, so I could get the recovery of 4EXT. I tried to switch s-off with revoked, but I couldn't use that as my hboot is 0.80.x.x. So I had to try with alpharev (I used both cd and usb) but it was stuck at the 3rd step, I left the process running for 5 hours and there was nothing changed.
So here I am, clueless about what to do because if I can't get a partition I can't get a2sd and if I can't get that I can only install 2 programs, which is quite rediculous.
Please, what is there left for me to do?
edit: I'm going to put a 2.2 froyo rom on it and see if I can try again with alpharev. I read somewhere alpharev isn't always working with certain roms.
Update: flashing a froyo 2.2 rom before letting alpharev run did the trick, my phone is now s-off. Going to try to get my full sd card back as I seem to be missing 500 mb.
Update 2: with 4EXT i could format my hidden ext partition and make a new one of 1gb. After that the a2sd worked!
So problem solved, thanks for reading!

[Q] A2sd never works...

Hello folks
My issue is this:
GSM Desire
Class 10 SD
4ext Recovery (used to partition sd)
I'm trying to install various JB roms. The a2sd never works. When I download the gui it says it can't start because either no scripts, no partition, etc.
I've tried a lot of Roms including ones where a2sd is meant to be built in. I've also installed from Terminal and it seems to optimise all the apps on reboot but internal memory is still the standard and apps still in Internal (it's meant to go up to my ext4 partition right? it's about 1.5G)
I've worked my way through these (can't post the link but its the Alchemister custom rom blogspot for the Desire.)
each one the same problem.
Checkext and diskspace both see the partition. Strangely, L2SD seems to crash each of the Roms if I install it.
So far the only Rom to work correctly is a Supernova Gingerbread one. It gave me the 1.5G. So, the partition appears to be good.
Both are primary too.
I would like a JB one as the supernova rom is very laggy.
Running a Miui at the moment and also really liked the Touchwiz one on the list as well.
I only started doing this two days ago as my contract was up so I'm very new to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Let's make sure your partition works. Download the rom in my sig. It's a very stable rom, that has a script integrated that moves data/app and dalvik cache to sd-ext. Flash it, then install a few apps. If the internal storage gets filled up quickly, then it probably is a partition fault, and you'll have to repartition.
If it does work, then you did something wrong when you installed the other roms.
Are you sure you did a full wipe before installing all those roms?
a2sd problem solved
Thankyou Andoo,
I've got it working now. It was two things that were confusing me. They were mentioned in the partitioning guide that you attached.
1. I was not aware that you were not meant to see the full size of your Ext4 partition as internal storage. For anyone else with this problem, you can see how your Ext partition is being used if you download Freespace app from the market. I had assumed that you could see the ext as internal space as that is what a few of the earlier Roms i looked at said that that would happen. (it does for the Supernova Rom)
2. When I was downloading and installing apps such as FB or Maps, they were still taking a big chunk out of my internal memory so I assumed that it wasn't working. However, when I chose to put the data as well as cache to the Ext, it hardly took anything out of my internal storage at all. I have a class 10 card and so far everything seems fairly brisk and responsive. I Chose Y/Y/Y when installing a2sd from Terminal instead of the recommended Y/N/Y.
If things start to get slow, I might try the Mount2SD script in the attachment -I think this allows you to chose individual large apps to go to Ext instead of all of them.
Thanks again for your help. I now have a useful and quick phone again.
PS the MildWild 9.5 Rom you suggested - I hadinstalled this before and had real problems with the WiFi disconnecting every couple of seconds and the same thing happened again when I installed from your link. I'm using the Touchwiz at the moment and all seems well.
