Lots of threads and lots of info.
This is purely my review ( based on the info i got from many places) on the topic.
How to test your memory card - see post 2
Hope this helps somebody
I will be updating the thread as more info comes in from users.
My recommendation after playing with all sorts of microsd cards and speeds is to get a sandisk 32gb card ( the new sandisk cards do not show a class speed , except for their ultra and extreme cards - This is their new policy )
Why this recommendation
- Randrom read write is the most important for speed during normal phone performance and i have seen sandisk cards have it the highest .
HERE IS A POST FROM SOMEONE IN XDA. Forgot the source
Class 2 and 4 cards have better random access speed and random read/write than class 6 or 10 cards in general. To get higher sequential write speeds, manufacturers sacrifice the random access speeds. That's just how it is.
The best all around card I've ever found is Sandisk class 4.
My 32gb Sandisk class 4 outperforms any other class 10 or 2 32gb card I've tested in the random access and random read/write speeds. That's what's most important when using with WP7 or Android when using it for apps or OS files that need to be accessed quickly. Class 6 and 10 cards are setup to initialize the area of the card that is about to be used to make the sequential write/read quicker, but it takes extra time in the beginning to do the initialization. If your using the card where you need to access small bits of info from various parts of card quickly, you will do best with class 2 or 4.
Most people seem to assume that the higher the class, the better the card is for everything, but that's not how it is. Different purposes need different kinds of speed... cards with higher sequential speeds have lower random speeds.

( quoted from one of the users in xda )
- Lexar class 10 ( I paid 94 $ for this :-( ) has terrible random speeds. The worst infact. Some of the other class 10 cards like kingston, patriot, topram have higher random speeds. However failure rate of some of these cards ( except kingston is high)
- Sandisk 32gb is relatively cheaper and very reliable.
- However if you are interested in regular copying of large files , like for eg : daily trnasfer of lots of music and movie files it might be better to get a class 10 card.

This will allow you to change the cache set for read and write on the sdcard.
The first app SD Booster will allow you to make the change, it is set to 128 stock, I have found that 2048 (2mb) or 3072 (3mb) are the best settings.
The next app SD Tools will let you see the speed increase SD Booster has allowed.
Ill also inclue an update.zip if you dont want the SD Booster app, the script is set to 3mb.
Update.zip

ROM Toolbox Pro also has the SD Boost on performance settings. There are the 2048 and 3072 options. Thanks for the test app info

Must be something wrong with my phone. SD Tools tells me ~5 MB/s read and write with class 10 cards. I've tried 2 separate cards and a few different read ahead settings. This has been the same for ICS and GB on stock and repacked (GB) kernels.
Definitely test your speeds after using. Decreased mine for some reason

Just as a side note, class 10 should have a minimum of 10 mb/s of write speed... which you're clearly getting, but the read speed should've been equal or higher !! It doesn't make sense because to write, the card does 2 operations but to read it only performs one operation... so in theory, the card should get twice the speed when reading vs writing !!

Because you're testing the internal memory, not the external SD. If I pull out my SD card, I get the same read speeds.
Here is my SDcard statistics -
32GB Samsung Class 10
(Speed testing app - Antutu benchmark v2.7.3)
2048kb - write 5.1MB/s Read 43.1 MB/s

4096kb - write 5.49MB/s read 28.48MB/s
128kb - write 5.58MB/s read 29.58MB/s
I'll find out more tools to measure the speed.

Hey gang,
This was a post from n2locarz that I found interesting and I wanted to post it in this forum
I personally have no education on the subject.

Hey guys, found this interesting article on slashdot about the "lag" of Android ICS. Looks like it may be a bigger issue than just our Inc2s. Anyway, read it over.
http://news.slashdot.org/story/13/01/12/1332204/the-android-lag-fix-that-really-wasnt
There is one comment I found very interesting. They are talking about faster "class 10" sd cards being better, which may not be the case:
This is a common misconception. The class of the SD card is a rating for sequential write speed, nothing more. It's important for cameras and camcorders - in fact it was developed for camcorders because some memory cards simply couldn't write the video data as quickly as the device was sending it to the card.
For an Android device you're more interested in its 4k random read/write performance. It's basically a computer reading/writing lots of small files, so it'll be most impacted by 4k read/write speeds.
As it turns out, manufacturers can tune a flash card for a certain type of performance. If you tune it for faster sequential speeds, random speeds suffer. Likewise if you tune it for random speed, sequential speeds suffer. The class 10 cards I've benchmarked typically hit 10-20 MB/s on sequential writes, but will bog down to as slow as 0.004 MB/s on random writes (yes, 4 kB/s - it was the card I bought before I learned all this. It took 4 hours to copy 4 GB of sheet music and MP3s to that class 10 card - a blissful 0.28 MB/s). Here are the CrystalDiskMark scores I got for a 32 GB class 4 card I have:
seq: 22.9 MB/s read, 4.3 MB/s write
512k: 22.0 MB/s read, 1.3 MB/s write
4k: 3.3 MB/s read, 1.3 MB/s write
Yikes! Only 4.3 MB/s write speed. Who would ever want that? Well look at the benchmarks for a 16 GB class 10 card I have:
seq: 21.8 MB/s read, 12.0 MB/s write
512k: 21.5 MB/s read, 0.9 MB/s write
4k: 5.7 MB/s read, 0.008 MB/s write (not a typo)
So yeah it's 3x faster at sequential writes. But it's slower at 512k writes, and more than 160x slower at 4k writes. It's definitely a very bad choice for an Android device despite being class 10.
The sweet spot for Android is around class 4 or 6. That gets you good 4k write speeds without punishingly poor sequential write speeds (which are important if you're doing something like copying a movie to the card). That said, not all cards are created equal. The "class 2" Samsung card which came with my phone is hands down the best card I've tested overall. It peaked at 11 MB/s sequential writes (meaning it could've been rated class 10), while 4k random writes were still above 1 MB/s. Sandisk is another company which seems to underrate their cards (and their class 10 cards have better if not stellar 4k random write speeds), which is why they're usually highly recommended for Android devices.
tl;dr - You want a class 4 or 6 card, or a good class 2 card for your Android device. Not a class 10 card.

I don't have a class 10 and I still got the lag while using CM10. After 5+ times of getting it, wiping, and reflashing back to CM10 I finally gave up and am now back on Venom for the first time since ~1.0.
I was using a Sandisk Ultra 64Gb micro SD card that was getting like 30 Megabytes per second read performance and 10 write according to A1 SD bench.
I just got in the mail a Sandisk Extreme Plus microSDXC UHS-I card and according to A1 SD bench on my Note 10.1 2014 it gets like 18 megabytes per second read performance and 20 for write.
I put my Sandisk Ultra 32GB micro sd card in the Note 10.1 and it got similar #'s to the Sandisk Ultra 64GB 30 meg per second read, 9 write.
I tried the Sandisk Extreme Plus microSDXC UHS-I card in my Galaxy S3 phone and it got like 50 Megabytes per second read, 20 write.
I don't understand why the read performance is so bad with the 64 GB card that is UHS-I on the Note 10.1 2014.
If anyone else has a Sandisk Extreme Plus UHS-I 64 Gig card, can you please run a benchmark with A1 SD bench and post your #'s?
Thanks
This might be of no help but I have a Samsung 64GB Class 10 UHS-1 Grade 1 and it works a treat. I haven't done a speed test but its pretty fast.

I looked through A1 SD benches reported results on the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 ediition) Almost every returned result I could see was 20 megabytes or under for read speed for 64 GB cards, and 10 - 20 megabytes per second write speed.
I saw a couple Sony devices that had 40 + meg per second read speeds. At this point my Cell phone (S3) with the same card can read from it over 100% faster. So I wonder if it is a Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) bottleneck with the micro SD card slot with certain cards.
Edit:
I also did some comparing opening large PDF's on my 64 gig Extreme Plus card vs the standard 32 GB Ultra.
Large PDF's open much faster on the 32 GB ultra. 2 seconds vs 9 seconds on some large PDF's (500+ meg)

Yes thanks. It matches the #'s pretty close that I got for my Sandisk Ultra 64 GB card.
To recap in a Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition) performance after several tests with A1 SD bench (using accurate with reboot advanced settings test for each):
Sandisk Ultra 64 GB card : 30-33 MB/S Read performance and 7-9 MB/S for write.
Sandisk Extreme Plus 64 GB card (exfat or fat32): 18-20 MB/S Read performance and 15-20 MB/S for write.
Sandisk Ultra 32 GB card: 30-32 MB/S Read performance and 9-11 MB/S for write.
I also tried my tests on stock firmware and flashed with cleanrom 2.0 R2. My results were the same.
In Samsung Galaxy S3 phone the same cards from above tested with A1 SD bench (using accurate with reboot advanced settings test for each):
Sandisk Ultra 64 GB card : 32-33 MB/S Read performance and 7-8 MB/S for write.
Sandisk Extreme Plus 64 GB card (exfat or fat32): 51-52 MB/S Read performance and 19-21 MB/S for write.
Sandisk Ultra 32 GB card: 32-33 MB/S Read performance and 9-11 MB/S for write.
If someone else has a Sandisk Extreme Plus 64 GB card, can you please post your #'s on the 10.1 2014?
Thanks
I just got a Lexar High Performance microSDXC 600x 64GB... 33 read 16 write. . Am watching this thread... Interested in a better performing card also.
You can't test within an 30mins-1hr of powering-on the device; the Media Scanner runs right after boot enumerating the SD-Card and will cut into your benchmark numbers.

thank you for the benchmark. Not a lot of people might be into writing test unless they're into movies shooting.
I have a Sandisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I Class 10 format card in my Canon 550D, 64Gb, I couldn't be more happy. It is like a world of difference compared to my previous SD card.
I trust them! :good:
You can get the most fastest memory in the world but unfortunately the bandwidth of the microSD slot on Z1 stuck on 40mb/s in reading and writing, which is good enough. Only internal memory of the Z1 reach 70mb/s.

According to Sandisk they don't make a SANDISK Extreme SDSDQX-064G is NOT Extreme Pro : BUT in fact Extreme Plus
Someone should test one of those 16 gigs too : can I get a thanks for this ?
