Partioning sd card - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just had a quick question. I'm rooted and running BlazingRom beta 5 and in wanting to partion my 8gb class 10 sd card. I've read up and read that it wipes EVERYTHING on the sd card. Since everything will be deleted, how am I supposed to re-flash the same rom right after I partion? Will I have to use Adb? If I don't use adb and don't flash a Rom and just reboot after I partion , will I be in a bootloop or will the BlazingRom still be installed? Sorry, I think I'm ovrrthinking this lol. Thanks.

You can erase your SD card and boot up your phone and it will boot into your current rom, its stored on your phone. Copy your SD to your computer and partition it then restore your data to your SD from your computer and you're good to go

Back everything up to the computer then partition the card. You should have an option in recovery as "Mount as MS" or something of the sort. After partitioning and converting it to ext3, while you are in recovery, plug up your phone to the computer and Mount as MS. Mounts your phone to the computer so you can transfer files back and forth your card

[Q] Formating SD card to start fresh

Ive tried to search the forums but cant seem to find the answer.
I wonder if I can safe format my sd card without ruining my DHD
I wonder what happens when SD card is upgraded to a higher capacity one. Is there a way to migrate existing data? Not sure what filesystem it uses either...

you can do this on your DHD, go to setting, SD & phone storage, unmount SD card and then you have option to format sdcard. this will fully wipe sdcard and format to fat32 filesystem.
you can format from pc as well, just unmount sdcard, right click on sdcard from pc ,an this you the format option, again format to fat32. only thing is on windows if you have a sd-ext partiton (ext3 or ext4) on sdcard, windows does not see it and won't format this partiton
and the no problem with saving your files on to pc,then formatting and putting those files back on again.
That sounds great. Data migration via PC should be easy. Here I was suspecting they'd somehow lock the content on the SD card.

Nah, they could not risk the case that if one's SD breaks, it would break the whole device

Need help swapping sd card

I put the new sd card in the phone and formatted it using RA the put the sd card in my computer and transfers everything from the old to the new card when I put it in my phone all my photos don't show up in the gallery, also vaulty pro will not show the photos, am I doing something wrong, also now when I put the old cars in the phone it won't read it at all, also noticed that when the old card is in now when I hit the power to turn on screen it will not come on

Is the card fully seated? Did you format the card prior to using it? Did you have an ext2 or ext3 partition on the old card but not on the new one? Try wiping cache & dalvik and then rebooting to see if the files show up on your device.

Did you try formatting the card using the option in the sd card and storage instead of using RA?

Changing SD Card that was Partitioned.

I am about to change out my SD card. I just upgraded from the stock 8gb card which came with my EVO that I had partitioned which I did through ROM Manager to a brand new 16gb Class 10 SDcard
1) Is it also as simple as copying and pasting from my old SD card contents to the new one and boot it back up?
2) Would this delete the old ROM and stock ROM off of my SD card?
3) I also wanted to know if I needed to partition this new card as well and if so, at what point do I do that?
I know this is probably really easy to answer for most of you but I am new to flashing ROMS which is why I wanted to get a bigger and faster card! Thanks!

Are you using windows or do you have access to linux?
Copy everything on your SD Card to your computer. Put the new SD card in the phone, go to recovery, partition, then copy everything back to the new SD Card, reboot.
You don't have to do anything else
Thank you HipKat as I was just going ot do this as well..
I am using Windows. I ended up just partitioning FAT32 for about 14gb then ext2 for 1gb & ext3 for 1gb. I copied everything over and did a Nandroid backup.
Everything works great but I think I might be having some issues with Titanium Backup.
I am having troubles with FCs each time I try to flash back to the Nocturnal ROM I was using.. I wipe the dalvik cache as well as wipe data/factory reset each time and wipe the partitioned cache before flashing. I must be missing something.

I never wipe anything when I'm just going back and forth from one nandroid to another.
So do you recommend not even wiping the dalvik cache?

Wiping is always good. And I'm not sure having an ext2 and ext3 partition is a good idea, but I could be wrong.

how to restore a micro sd?

I already have, root, s-off and tried some roms.
Unfortunately, I redid the partitions but bad and the phone continues to freeze,
to fix them I connect the sd to the computer with the recovery, and then i start gpartedlive, but I can not see the partitions ext, I only see fat32, so I can not fix them, how do I bring back as if sd new?
I need the adapter, or connect it via the recovery goes well?
i'm sorry for my really bad english LoL

You need adapter connecting via recovery only mounts the fat32 partition

Turn off your phone and remove the back panel, battery, and slide out your SD card.
Use a USB->microSD adapter/card reader to connect it to your computer, as connecting the phone in recovery will still only mount the FAT32 partition. Boot gParted.
You should now be able to mount both partitions. I recommend using the LiveCD to copy files from the ext and FAT32 partitions to a backup location on your computer or another drive, before wiping the SD card and recreating the partition structure in gParted. Then you can copy the files back on to the SD card with the new partition structure without data loss.
thank you so much, i'm going to buy an adapter
Or if you're not worried about data loss on all partitions ie ext partition, then you could copy files from fat partition to computer then use 4ext recovery to partition the card

is my phone not reading my SD CARD?
In cwm, go to mounts and mount external SD card.

When you go to "install from sd card" are you seeing two options(should be first and last) for install from card or install from phone storage? I ask because there are two different CWMs out there.
What he means is that the new versions of cw would not support External SD even when u try to mount then.
For flashing Rom I recommend internal SD if that's what you are trying to do.
CW Touch 5.8.4.9. No ExSd
Last time just to see the difference I flash back to 5.8.4.6 and it those show both sd with out the need to mount then.
Hope this help
