[Q] USB brick problem - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody!
I tried downgrading a friend of mine's Desire from Gingerbread to Froyo via official RUU. The problem is that everything is working except the USB connection, but only when the o.s. is running. I can access the hboot and recovery.
The problems are:
- the phone is not rooted and I can't root using unrevoked or revolutionary
- flashing another root doesn't solve the problem (hboot is 0.93 and I can flash only the latest RUU)
- no terminal root access from the phone (obviously)
- Windows can't recognize properly the phone (Qualcomm drivers request)
I followed many guides on this forum and on the web, new and old, but anything worked. Do anyone have any idea?

there's a section on my guide for that, try it. It's only been tested on 2.2 S-OFF but it's worth a try.

Hi!
Does not work for unrootet, S-ON, official GB and HBoot 1.02.

well the guide gets temproot, and that's the best you can get with usb brick if you're on a stock ROM (if you're on 2.2 anyway) was worth a try though.
try calling htc and get their opinion on this matter and whether they'd fix it for you. Just tell them you did the update and now usb doesn't work (don't call it usb brick, make yourself sound like a total retard [not calling you one obviously] who doesn't know what he's doing and they should pity you)

[Q] Unrevoked 3.2 problem

Hello all,
I am having a bit of a problem here.
I managed to download Unrevoked 3.2 to root my HTC Desire GSM on the official 2.2 Froyo.
Ik installed the Hboot drivers correctly and when i start the tool everything goes well untill he reboots. After the reboot this message comes up:
"Failed to load recovery image".
Am i doing something wrong or what?
I have a .zip file with a recovery on my SD card.
Thanks in advance,

I can bet you have HBOOT 0.92 or other than Unrevoked can't make
How can i see my Hboot version? Is 0.92 not supported? Will it be? Why are smurfs blue and why am i asking so many questions?
Power on your device with the volume down, the HBOOT version will be the third line down. If you have 0.92 than you need to downgrade.
There is a link under android development with a tutorial.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Ah offcourse. So i have 0.92. And so it isn't possible to root my device on the official Froyo update (yet)?
I was under the impression that UnrEVOked 3.2 could root later HBOOTs without a downgrade.
However, the point is moot at the moment, because 3.2 was pulled due to some bugs, so that may well be what is causing the OPs issue.
Regards,
Dave
3.2 Is indeed also for Froyo devices. But 0.92 bootloader is an exeption maybe?
3.2 Was pulled down because of some problems with 2 Evo users. It should be working on the Desire tho.

The 0.92 bootloader came with the Froyo OTA.
So, if UnrEVOked 3.2 is supposed to root Froyo based Desires, it stands to reason that it should be so with HBOOT 0.92, because if you've got Froyo with an earlier bootloader, you must've already rooted at some point.
Regards,
Dave
Why, if 3.2 was taken down for bugs and screwing up peoples phones, did you try and use it?? Seems like a silly idea to me...
And 2.10.405.2 is HBOOT 0.93
it does 092 just fine. i did mine. you are doing something wrong. remove htc sync

It went offline for 2 EVO users. There were no Desire problems.
But it was taken down as it COULD cause issues for any device. Just cause it was 2 EVOs doesn't mean it won't kill other phones as well...if it was OK for all phones they'd still have it on their site with a note that it might cause issue if you have an EVO

Thanks for the confirmation 0.92 does indeed work. I removed HTC Sync execpt the driver. So. I did everything right. That's why i started this topic. I am clueless atm.
did you install hboot drivers w/o errors?
connect turned on and select mass storage mode. don't forget to have usb debugging checked.retry and post results.

One thing I would say about UnreEVOked in general is that I found the Windows version by far the most difficult to get up and running, whereas the OS/X version just runs with no messing around with drivers etc. I'd imagine the same is true of the Linux version.
Regards,
Dave
I've used unrEVOked once using Windows 7 x64 and it worked first time - was VERY easy...I'm back to stock now but does anyone know if HBOOT 0.93 will be supported when it's back out?

Yes i did install the drivers correctly and connected my device in mass storage mode with debugging turned on. Running on Win 7 64BIT but that should not be the problem. I am willing to try it on MAC OSX if somebody wants to give me the OSX files in a PM.
yes it is said that it will support any hboot. i did mine yesterday because i wanted amonra's recovery. i had no problems whatsoever.

[Q] Strange Unrooting Problems

I purchased my Desire back in June and as soon as i found out about rooting
i used the one click unrevoked 3 method. Due to it being unbranded i didnt need a gold card i simply did so. After which i had problems installing some roms and its become too difficult so ive decided to unroot it and use it as it was meant to be until i gain more knowledge.
My problem is no matter which RUU i use following the unlocker method nothing works. I continue to get the error that none of the RUUs are suitable for my phone.
I have looked through the other posts but couldnt find an answer that worked for me.
my radio is 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2
Im running AuraxTSense 7.6.1 Froyo FRF91 by NeoPhyTe
Can anyone help me?

Hi,
Is your Hboot 0.93 ?
try this RUU : http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Enter bootloader (vol.dw+power), then plug the phone to USB and run the RUU it should work...
Have u installed HTC Sync again after using unrevoked?
U need the htc drivers installed
Have u tried LeeDroid?
Running stable and fast in my Desire, I rooted nd unrooted the phone twice, but every time i go back to unroot status i get bored, so root again, i think u should try another ROM first before unroot, try mine : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Download de ROM,
Install thru ROM Manager or directly thru Recovery, but remember to Wipe data before u install make a clean install, if u still experience any issues go back to Stock...
My Hboot is 0.93.0001
Ill try the RUU tomorrow when i have enough time at my disposal
Although ill try leedroid first just in case. Hopefully it works and is good enough
thanks for the help
Just curious, but did it work?

[Q] USB brick - Pulling my hair out - Please help!

Hi all
For the last few weeks I have been trying to fix my HTC Desire back to some sort of working state. After awhile, I managed to get back to stock (from CM7), but soon realised I had the USB brick and SD Card issue. For info I used the stock HTC 2.3 Gingerbread RUU and used Alpharev PB99IMG_downgrade.zip for HBOOT (I was using Alpharev S-OFF with CM7).
So, I followed this guide, http://android.modaco.com/topic/309939-usb-brickrickrolledb0rked-fixed/ and managed to mount the SD Card. However, I could not get the update.zip file to apply because I was no longer rooted.
So I followed the guide linked in the USB brick article, http://android.modaco.com/topic/307...ide-now-with-hboot-080-and-os-to-121-support/ and soon realised that I did not have the HBOOT version required. Either 0.75 and below, or, 0.80 and below. I have 1.02.0001.
Not a problem, I thought. I will follow this guide to downgrade, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256 as it specifically says that "...the downgrade does not depend on any version of HBOOT" which is what I need. However, first step is to get a working Goldcard. This is where I start to get into trouble and I'm already losing track of what I'm doing, but I soldier on...
How do I create a Goldcard? I followed this guide, http://android.modaco.com/topic/305672-creating-a-goldcard/ and got stuck at running the ADB command as because my USB is broken, Windows 7 (x64) refuses to see the Phone. Luckily, my father has the same phone, so I put my SD Card into his Desire and managed to create a Goldcard (he is running CM7 on his Desire too).
So Goldcard in hand, I go back to the downgrade guide and then spot my next issue. I can't get Windows to see the phone to use ADB commands and I also can't get Windows to see the phone when it is booted up (the charge light won't even come on now), meaning I can't run the downloaded application.
Not to be outdone I went back to the Rooting Guide and tried both of the downloads with the "step1-windows.bat" command just in case they did work, but both give an error, which on searching, is to do with the HBOOT version being incompatible.
I tried putting on the PB99IMG_downgrade.zip file from Alpharev again, then re-running the HTC 2.3 Gingerbread stock RRU and taking the ROM.zip folder and re-loading it on to the phone, but it hasn't changed the HBOOT version. So my cry for help is.... how can I downgrade HBOOT without using ADB commands or having to have Windows detect my phone? I'm basically stuck with Fastboot and my SD Card.
Even though my phone looks stock, I can't call people as it disconnects straight away, the USB is broken and the battery drains stupidly quickly.
Thanks for any help!
now this IS a sticky situation.. well done on what you've done so far by the way.
On my guide there's a section on how to temproot and flash recovery without USB connection, then flash a recovery that restores usb functionality, but it's only been tested on 2.2 and S-OFF... could be worth a try though

Hi bortak,
Thanks for the reply. It is a bit of a strange situation I agree. I've been putting off signing up and posting for help as I feel quite dumb for breaking my own phone, but I have to admit defeat on this one.
I saw your reply also in this similar topic, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290391, so I will definitely try your suggestion and report back.
Appreciate you taking the time to post.
Thanks.

But I had no luck. There is no way to write the Misc patition... I´d like to downgrade (to Froyo), but without USB it seems to be impossible. Alpharev did not work. Revolutionary needs USB !USB brick with official Gingerbread, S-ON and HBoot 1.02 seems to be a dead end so far....

well this sucks, it's also strange how there is so many people at once with exactly same problem as well!
you could call HTC and ask if they'd fix it for you, and say that this happened after you did the update.

just fixed my desire 1 hour ago and it works.
look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916
What I did:
I was able to connect my pc and phone through wi-fi and adb worked (adb connect phones-IP-address ) and then pushed, chmod'd 755 and executed zergrush. Gained root via cmd with adb shell in windows and after that I just pushed flash_image and mtd0.img to phone and ran it like you supposed to in the guides (chmod 755 and execute). Rebooted and voila! USB connection is working and now my phone signal isn't dropping anymore - phone fixed!
I fixed my unrootet Phone (official GB 2.3.3, HBoot 1.02, S-ON, USB Brick)!!!!
I wifi connected with adb and got temp root with zergRush!
Then from cmd in adb shell I flashed the misc with mtd0.img!
Rebooting and everything was fine ))
Many thanks to all of you!!!

I can't do both of this, because my phone is not recognized by PC in any way, i must root it without PC.
If you have 2.3 connect to same wifi as your pc and adb connect to your phone's IP. Then run zergrush and you will have temproot over adb from your pc. Then you can flash your mtd0.img and your brick will be resolved

[Q] AAHK Failed..

hi folks,
i've just got a DHD from one of my friend which may or may not got the 2.3.5 originally. (could through update).. and then i decide to use AAHK in order to downgrade it ,root it so that it would be able to flash custom ROMS.
however, my machine DID downgrade to 2.2(maybe) and sucessfully got into the system, after couple settings, it continues to downgrade i guess? finally it says success etc. and i'd decide to turn to the HBOOT menu and discover.
what the AAHK DID changed is that the HBOOT Version changed to 0.85.0024 instead of 2.XX originally. and of course the date change as well, also the recovery was installed.
However, whatsmore worth notice is that it's still SHIP S-ON. I'd decide to ignore it and tried to turn on the device. but it stays at the first screen, which is the HTC one. moreover, i've decide to wipe data and cache in order to test again, fail.
furthermore, i've tried to flash one of my 4.0.3 ROMs and the machine replied success whereas the reboot also remain at the HTC screen .

Ok, let's just start from the beginning: The Hack didn´t fail, you in fact did to follow the instructions in the manual.
1) The downgrade from the 2.3.5 android version is always done to a 2.3.3 android version and 2.1 sense version. A froyo RUU will definetely mess your bootloader.
2) the downgrade is not the whole process but the first part. Once the downgrade is done you should have run the kit again to gain S-OFF and Root.
3) If you are S-ON you can't install a custom recovery, so there's something that is not correct in what you say.
4) Then u say that the device stays at the splash screen and that is HTC ONE, if you phone is the ONE you can´t use the Kit as it is just for ACE (Inspire / DHD).
5) Again, If you are S-ON you CAN´T flash a custom rom...
My advice is that u flash the RUU the Hack Kit used to do the downgrade, run it again and then, run the Hack Kit in order to gain S-OFF and Root. But this time, please follow the instructions in the effen manual....
no no... okay. its my problem of phrasing the sentense..
well.. i donno.. but the fact is i'm able to get into the recovery.. and my phone is definitely DHD..(sorry about my sentence)
and i tried to connect to the computer and redo the AAHK,,but the AAHK just don't recognises my phone 'cause it's the USB debugging is not on..(i'm not able to get in the system, i just use the fastboot..)

[Q] No G2-G3 and USB, Wifi and BT ok?? Please HELP wanted!

I am stuck on my Desire: I have no telephone connection anymore.
I am on S-Off Data++ with BCM RC4.0.
I really want to know the best way to get the phone back to stock but I do not know how as I have no USB connection.
If I sent it to HTC they want a stock phone.
Suggestions much appreciated!

Check the development section for USB brick fix. You'll find the description there.
Best regards Coempi
I am just looking for a way to flash a stock rom to the device. This is the first time I am stuck with a smartphone since 2002!
I do not want to do a usb de-bricking method as I am going to sent it in. But I doubt they will give me any service if I bring a modified Desire in.

In order to use the USB you have to fix the USB brick. After that you can flash a custom recovery, a stock rom, whatever you want.
So you're saying there is no way to achieve this otherwise? I thought maybe there is a stock rom that can be applied through the sd card.....
I'll try that USB brick anyway, thanks!
Funny thing is: Yesterday I lost my G2/G3 connection, then I started to get another rom because I thought it had something to do with that and then my USB went completely dead. HTC said it probably is a "software" problem.

When you cannot access your phone via USB, that's called a USB brick, so give the fix a go.

Help....really stuck now!
Ok, guys, here's the deal:
Somehow HTC decided I had voided my warranty as I said I had downloaded the REGULAR updates from their site.........(????) So now I am stuck with a bricked Desire.
I have downloaded the Alpharev downgrade boot and I have a 2.33 Android RUU on it. Version 3.14.405.1. The 5.17.05.23 radio is on there as well.
If I boot in Hboot I see the following:
BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.02.0001
MICROP-0514
TOUCH PANEL-SYNTH0101
RADIO 5.17.05.23
Jul 22 2011.16.19.16
That's what I got from the Alpharev s-off site (downgrade hboot)
Charging via USB works. SD can be accessed (That's how I have been trying the last few days to get it back to normal via PB99IMG.zip.
But I really don't know how to get the USB functionality back and it doesn't recognise the fastboot drivers and so on.
I.m pretty sure it is not a hardware problem as I had the cables checked in a repair place.
Surely there must be a smart wizard out there that can help me?
AFAIK u have to be s-off to flash H-boot
and the ruu runs from your computer

I know that......but what H-boot do you want me to put on it?
If you extract the rom.zip from the ruu, you can also put it on the device by using the sd-update.
I also saw this recovery with build-in usb unbrick. But how to get it on the phone?
There is no point in putting any h-boot on the sd card
Rename the rom.zip to PB99IMG.zip
I'm fairly confident that your problem is to do with the RILs that were included as part of BCM 4.0. They tried including new RILs and it didn;t work for lots of people.
If you read the BCM home page it talks about this problem on the release notes
My 3G didn't work. I downloaded the RILs put them on my SD card. booted to recovery (I'm using 4EXT graphical user interface recovery) and then chose to install the old rills (it's just a zip file).
Really easy.
Alternative you could reflash BCM 4.1U2. I think you were just a bit unlucky!!

Ok, thanks.......I got a bit tired of this issue so I got a new device. But I still have the Desire and I will definitely give it a go, have not tried that one yet. I'll report back here!
