I pmed intronauta from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197496 to mod it for our Epic Touch. He sent me this file and instructions. This is for deodexed roms only. Can someone try it and see if this works? I have an odexed rom at this time and didn't want to goto deodexed rom yet since mine is running fine. He said he can make an odex version though.
You must rename /system/app/Browser.apk->Browser.apk.bak and Browser.odex->Browser.odex.bak , put the deodexed version in /system/app and reboot. If it fails and there is a FC, delete data app, wipe dalvik-cache, check permissions in the apk (same as others in the path).
If doesn't work, delete deodexed version and revert the original name for Browser.apk-odex.
Edit: He pmed me back and said it should work on odexed roms also. I tried it and it works. I have the option to choose between Android or Desktop in the settings menu and it sticks after closing the browser.
Have you notified any of the dev's?

I use Opera mobile but the stock browser is faster and smoother than any 3rd party browser I've used including Dolphin. Opera is better than Dolphin imo because it doesn't jump back to the top left of the page when hitting the back button.

I use Dolphin, and have been since my OG Epic. Interestingly, and I've seen this reported elsewhere, on some sites even though I have the user agent set to desktop I still get the mobile version. Engadget for one does this. Not sure why.
Thanks nobrakes. I've been waiting for this since I bought my E4GT.
IMO, people should be hitting the thanks button....instead of posting "Stock browser sucks". Lol

I notice this also with sites that have mobile versions. With Opera it goes to the desktop site though if set to desktop.

Folks have been waiting anxiously for this. Thanks for posting.
I tried this. I now have an option under settings for ua android/desktop but sites still load in mobile. I tried going to about:useragent and the setting still won't stick to anything but custom.
This is the original thread of the BrowserMod for International I9100.

In first post is the source code (diff & files). The xml and smalis related are the same in both systems. Just compare files and build yourself.

Yep. Doesn't stick.
I see what you mean by doesn't stick. I tried going on certain sites and it still went to mobile version. I've been using Opera mobile for a while and didn't run into this issue. I just like how smooth and fast the stock browser is.

I personally use this
m.tvcatchup.com (works for UK residents only)
and is free over 3G or WIFI and plays all the UK free to view channels
Just tried it and yes it works through dolphin. You can change the user agent in the stock browser but only to desktop mode not to HTML5/iPhone setting. Because the website believes you are on either an android phone or a desktop pc when using the stock browser, it tries to use flash to stream the content. Hope this helps

Hey guys! I have my GNex since yesterday and I love it oh so much
Just one question: Is it possible to change the stock browser's agent permanently to desktop? Because I always browse on desktop mode and hate most mobile optimized sites :/ And everytime I restart the browser I have to tick "show desktop site" again.
If not possible on stock, is there a solution with root? I'm gonna root that beauty anyway ASAP

its not a stupid question its just not possible on the stock browser. The only option is to install another browser such as Dolphin Browser HD which works very well and can be set to desktop by default.

In Honeycomb you type in "about:debug" in the browser address bar, which enables the Debug category in settings. From there you go to UAString and select Desktop. Does this not work in ICS?

I know that hack, but it didn't show me an agent to change to desktop mode on ICS. In Honeycomb it's possible to change between mobile, tablet and desktop agent by default since version 3.2 btw. But about:debug shows some other neat options too, like OpenGL rendering for example.

I think you're talking about the check-box for "Desktop version" that is already available without about:debug? That's what I talked about in the OP. It resets after every browser restart.

Ok thanks. I'm aware there are other really good browsers, but Google improved the stock browser a lot in Android 3.x and 4.x and I kinda like it a lot So I thought it might be possible to hack. Doesn't seem like that though :/
Do you think devs could modify the browser.apk in some way to make desktop mode persistent?
Cheers

Maybe in Honeycomb. It definitely doesn't stick in Ice Cream Sandwich. I've tried it. It doesn't stick. That's why I said it's not persistent.
Hey man, I almost swear I saw that what your talking about in this hour long video by Google /Samsung in October some time. ICS is supposedly meant to be possible to do just never found an option.
Hahahahahaha
Just found it. Press menu (top right corner, three dots sat on each other) when in browser and you find a check box for request as desk top site. This should be what your after man
Edit
After a more careful read through seems you found this option already. As for making it stick after reboot surely its not too much hard work to check one box after reboot? Permanent solution unknown

Yeah, I knew about this feature from the start, but as I mentioned before, it doesn't stick to it. And I don't talk about full reboot, the option doesn't even stick if the Browser was closed and needs to be restarted

I've tried the "about:debug" -method and it seems it's not working with ics browser. Any other ways to make the browser to act like desktop chrome?
In the menu (3 vertical dots top right of the screen), there is an option "Request Desktop Site", check that box. Its possible it may be under settings (im using a newer release, i don't remember where it was before (if it even moved))

Forgot to mention; that would also work if the option you just recommended could be made permanently "on" by default for all sites. Now I have to manually enable it every time I access sites.

I guess you're right.
If someone knows how to change the UA-string from the source, I could try to compile modded browser myself.
to make stock browser default desktop mode .
turn off wifi.
open browser.
top URL bar. TYPE, "about:debug" press enter or go
open the menu ,
click on setting
click Debug
Click UAString
then set to Desktop.
and your done.
when you set the default user agent to desktop can you request the mobile site?
EDIT:
Never Mind... It does not, but it appears that after doing this the debug option stays in the settings so I can switch back and forth between user agents now. Nice.

I went to their site and got 'We're Sorry. This content requires Adobe Flash Player, which is not supported by your device. This content can be viewed on a desktop computer or on mobile devices that support Flash Player.'
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931671
since Flashplayer isn't supported, it's going to be hit and miss. Some sites will work, some won't.
I don't use the stock browser. I use Chrome mainly. When I need flash player, I've had decent luck using Boat Browser. Dolphin supports flash player well, but I couldn't get it to work on the GN2. There's some agruments with Dolphin excessively tracking your information or browser habits, but I haven't kept up on it.
Dolphin did look at other unrelated apps info. I emailed them and they wouldn't respond. Anyways it's not the sites it's the browser. Either it works or it doesn't. Enable flash in the settings file of dolphin if that's what you use. I would imagine it's the same for most browsers.
For me, Dolphin crashed every time I tried to open it. I never loaded on the TF700T. It has been a few months since I read about the Dolphin debacle.
Boat has worked for my needs, which is to use Sirius's radio internet radio via web browser since I'm a grandfathered life time member with limited internet radio access; I'm not able to use the Sirius app without loosing my no extra cost internet access.

Honestly, I tried many browsers out there, but I still love chrome, and love the little things it has. Only thing I dont like is how flash is not supported. Is there a way to get flash on Chrome, or is there no ways to get that? I tried searching for similar topics, but I couldnt find any.
If there is no way, can you recommend a browser that is like chrome, but with flash?
Stuff I like about chrome are:
1. I like how I dont lose my tabs even after closing the app (task manager) or even shutting off the phone
2. I like how chrome auto fills the url, such as if I type xd, it autofills all the url l
3. The smoothnews, and the speed.
Thank you!

Nope..there isn't. All mobile browsers do not support flash anymore. U might be able to get it on dolphin or firefox but I found it to be unreliable. It worked with some basic flash i used as a test but not for a local news site when a brush fire was going burn down my home.. Ur supposed to get the app for whatever ur trying to do with flash but obviously u cant find an app for some things like local news... so you just speed home and drive crazy the old way.
The dependency is two fold.. one is android version and the other is browser version. So if you run android 2.0 and ancient browser then you have flawless flash
BTW Opera mobile is faster than chrome and it does all those things u liked (not flash tho). I only use chrome on desktop but I test it on android with every new version. It's still slower on some sites.
Aww thats too bad I guess.
Thanks for the recommendation. Ill trybout opera
