[Q] Question about Sense Roms - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was hoping for some help..or even a point to the correct thread to find the answer:
How can one install any of the newer sense 3.0+ roms and still keep all apps without the phone crashing? The roms are easily between ~250 - 350 mb in size and there is no room left over for apps that I have saved in back up. I know I can move them to the sd card but I never get the chance to once i restore them due to the phone crashing. I have read about formatting the sd card but I really don't know how.
Is there someplace I can find this?
Thanks in advance

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121538

So I followed the guide and it worked perfectly. The roms finally work and don't crash. However, now I only have about 20 - 40 mb free. I try to move my apps to the sd card using the function that comes with the rom, but it says my sd card is full. I have about 6 gb free on my card. Any idea why that's happening or how I can get around that?
Thanks again

Unfortunately this is just an inherent flaw of the Evo; the internal space is so small that you can't really enjoy a big Sense rom that uses 3.0 features and have a lot of apps. Only way to get all the room back is to flash a smaller rom.

Format your SD card with an ext3 partition. Make it 1gb or whatever size you desire. Most Sense ROMs support a2sd where it tricks the phone into thinking the ext3 partition is part of the phone internal storage. You can install as many apps as you want with the apps stored on the SD.

Thanks for the replies. I've formatted the sd card in ext3 and made it 2 gb. I wish it had more internal space. Any idea why its saying my sd card is full when I have over 6gb left of free space?

Are you using dark tremors a2sd?? If not flash that and do the following commands in terminal emulatior: a2sd install, a2sd datasd, a2sd cachesd, a2sd cachepart. Make sure you type su first
I get about 100 MB free after this

I wouldn't do all of this unless you have at least a class 6 or higher sdcard.
Definitely use dark tremors a2sd. Search for dta2sd.
If you partitioned your card to ext3, It should work automatically, but use the a2sd install command, just in case.
You can use the other commands, but you shouldn't need to. They move the cache partition including the dalvik cash to the ext3 partition, and if your card isn't fast enough, it will create lags, and other issues.
Make sure to wipe cache and dalvik before/after you flash dta2sd.

have you partitioned your sd card correctly?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning
check your roms original thread to see what sort of partition you need.
which ROM do you have... and was A2SD+ part of the ROM, or sth you added?
I think I read somewhere that some A2SD+ implementations don't move the Dalvik cache over to SD. The (easiest) method to add dalvik to SD likely depends on the A2SD implementation.
Use S2E , download it from Market.
thanks.
what is better for a2SD, ony ext3 or ext3 and swap???
The a2sd script in Cool's AceS v1 does move the dalvik cache to the sd card, so most likely the card isn't formatted correctly. I suggest you use gparted or a similar tool to format your card like this: first the FAT partition, then the ext 2/3 one (note that some roms require you to have an ext 4 partition, but this is not the case of AceS; anyway, make sure you read the thread thoroughly before flashing). Also, make sure the ext partition is no larger than 2048 MB (i.e. 2 GB), since you might experience market problems. Swap is not used by most roms you'll want to flash these days, so don't worry about it too much, unless the thread mentions so.
Just to mention, S2E is only for cyanogen mod, as it's stated in the app's description, so don't use it with other roms (which have other a2sd scripts). Also, before formatting, don't forget to backup your data
Good luck!
Warm up
Hello guys!
i'm new here just want to say that it's probably the best site for modding.
I have a desire with Ginger sense ROM.
Link2sd is free on the market. Uses ext and fat partitions. I have link2sd on my Kyocera Zio m6000 which only has a total of 180mb in data and I have 137mb free. Link2sd allows you to create a symbolic link for app data dalvik-cache and lib files of the app you want to move to SD. Plus with the symbolic links you get to keep your Widgets.

Dalvik Cache will take up space on "Internal storage" by default on some A2SD + ROMs, but it can be moved
You can move this by running "terminal emulator" from the market and typing:
Code:
su
a2sd cachesd
or with adb:
Code:
adb shell
a2sd cachesd

please note that davebugyi's suggestion only works if you're using the Darktremor a2sd script

Too many a2sd a2sd+ app2sd, really confused...

I'm really confused, first with all the different a2sd variants and ones that are made by Darktremor or other people or the FroYo version. This is as much as I know for this app.
Secondly, I really couldn't find any information on doing partitions manually or setting ALL partitions to ext since I have a linux box, I really don't care to use windows to copy over files or whatever. I have a VMware box to do that on my windows machine anyways.
Third, the ClockworkMod recovery has NO options to do the partition following Darktremor's faq, and I don't know if I should install another recovery after flashing my hboot to 0.93 S-OFF (Alpha)
Mind you I only had my android for about 6 days and this is my first one, so learning curve is hard.
Please help
1) the names can be confusing but old apps2sd is an ext partition on your SD card that appears to the system as internal storage. Froyo apps2sd is using Froyo to transfer mapps to the fat32 partition (normal partition) of your SD card. You just need to use context because people tend to use apps2sd for both.
2) you can use gepart to partition. You need a fat32 partition for apps to write to and for any personal data because Android looks to that partition for that kind of data. I have my SD card as 5 gb fat32 and 3 gb ext3. Fat32 goes first.
3) go to ROM manager. Partition SD card. Choose size....there is only 3 sizes though.
If anything I wrote is wrong I'm sure I'll be corrected.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but since this is related to a2sd in general I might as well ask it here. What's the effect of having a2sd+ on your battery? Would it lower battery life due to cache and apps being stored mainly on SD instead of internal memory? I observed that this was often the case when I store always-on apps on SD back on my old Windows device.
So no way of not using a fat32 eh?
It still seems I don't have much space left after using the Rom manager way. I have 120meg free on internal mem.
Could I just format using linux mkfs? I want to make the apps partition about 2GB to hold more apps. Though it seems some widgets can't take putting on SD card, it dissipates.

Widgets must be installed on internal storage, or they wont work.
If you want an easy method to make a ext 3 partition use ROM manager premium from the Market. It will make you automatically an ext3 partition with a maximum of 512 mb which is enough (put swap to 0). Just keep in mind that first inside ROM Manager you need to select the option Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, and after that go to the SD partition option otherwise it wont work. And also remember you need to have the PREMIUM version otherwise it might not work
Now if you want to have more than a 512 mb you can use gparted. It is a livecd which means that can work on linux, mac or windows just reboot with the cd inside and is quite straightforward to use. Hope this helps.
Hello guys, any thought about that issue maybe?

[Q] A2SD+ and low internal memory

I haven't found really good explanation on forum and most of post on this seems not to be answered so I'm posting to see if I can get this sorted.
I used Leedroid, InsertCoin, and now on GingerVillian now. All of them had same setting of 500MB ext partition. Problem is I always seems to get low internal memory no matter what ROM I use. Currently I have 394MB free SD-EXT and 16MB Internal.
I moved adobe flash to SD card which seems to free up space and Dalvik Cache is on SD-Ext.
So question is why even though I have lot of EXT space left is it not being used and is there way to make it use it more instead of internal memory?

App2SD is flawed because of this, say you have an app 20mb, 15mb would be put on to the SD card and the rest go's to internal, so you will still use up space and in the end will have to start uninstalling.
Best way is to use a Rom with data2SD witch give's you 2gb internal memory.

Data2SD RoM problems solved
One could also flash a new hboot which increases the size of the /data-partition. However you need s-off for this and it's imho riskier than flashing a rom with data2sd. Whereas i work with a2sd + cm7 hboot and i am very happy it.
Desire with Cool Sensation v7
Hi,
I have this problem too. but it is not our choice to choose the data2sd instead of app2sd because it depend on what the ROM support.
Previously I use App2sd+ from ModaCo ROM. I have 200+ apps and it take the internal memory nearly full but sd-ext space just half.
I tried the Data2sd for Desire is only SuperNova with HTC Sense and it work in 1Gb sd-ext. BUT it uses Sense 2.1.
I just try Sense 3 from Cool Sensation v7 ROM. I love it and dont want to revert back to previous Sense It have 3D home screen, cool weather animation, SMS secure lock. However this ROM still use app2sd. I cannot post to the thread, I dont have enought post count.
I try some other way to apply Data2sd into this ROM but I got boot loop.
After few days I use this ROM, my internal memory almost full (15mb free) for only 57 apps even the app2sd symlink-ed /data/app, /data/app-private, /data/dalvik-cache and /system/app into sd-ext!
Expert please help me and give me some idea.
Do I need to symlink /data/data into sd-ext manually?
Is it possible to remove app2sd in the ROM and install Data2sd? How?
Data2sd require busybox, init.d and ext4 kernel support. I think this ROM have all this thing.
HTC Desire
Hboot S-Off with Revolutionary
4ExtRecovery
Cool Sensation v7 ROM
8Gb Class 2 sd card with Fat32 + 1Gb ext4
And have some basic in Linux shell
I can 100% get my head around this either, although i did install some apps and i could really tell if it was on Internal or EXT4.
From my understanding, as far as the phone os, it thinks apps are on Internal and will decrease the size counter, but apps are on EXT4 if you use a file manager etc.. but even if all goes to EXT4, we still get that annoying LowDisk message was it get to 15megs...
I still was convinced, but i accidently decided i wanted to format my FAT32 partition, mainly to get rid of all the junk that on there since STOCK Rom. I used the Phone own Format SD Card option.
Well that was fun (NOT!!) it instead formatted the EXT4 and not the FAT32, when i rebooted all the loaded apps that were on EXT4 were now gone.
Phone still works, but one side effect of this is now i have like 270megs free....lol, granted no wallpaper, lockscreens etc,
anyway seeing as i screwed up and that im already S-OFF, im going to just go with CM7r2 HBoot.
Similar issue - I think?
Hi all, my first post here
So I have been working my way through all the error messages and guides and finally have InsertCoin set up. All is looking good except after Titanium Backup restored all my apps my internal memory is as full as before I rooted the phone, so I think I can safely say that the 2gb I partitioned off on my SD is not getting ay use at all? Is there a way I can check?
For the record I am running with AmonRa, and I used Revolutionary to get s-Off. The guide I followed to set up A2SD did not have me using any Terminal commands, so I am guessing that is an area for me to explore in solving this, here is the guide I used (near the end)
/myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-desire
I used that method as i am on a borrowed mac and it just seemed easier. I
I am hoping there is an easy fix that someone can suggest.

To check if a2sd is working, open terminal emulator and type
Code:
su
ls -l /data
Output should say (for a2sd):
Code:
app -> /sd-ext/app
app-private -> /sd-ext/app-private
Additionally for a2sd+:
Code:
dalvik-cache -> /sd-ext/dalvik-cache
If it does not show this, a2sd is not working. So make sure you partitioned sd card correctly (fat32 + ext; both primary).

I used Cool Sensation v7 but didn't have this problem until I flashed the newer v9 (just noticed v10 has been posted today though). My internal memory was very low but I then flashed the Dalvik to sdext.zip from the Cool Sensation thread and then had 180MB internal free. Try that and see if it works. If it doesn't, have you aligned your SD ext using the .zip on the same thread? if not this could be why your having problems, though it didn't work for me.
Thanks for the ideas, I was a bit out of my depth with the Mac SU functions, so although i didn't get the desired feedback you suggested, but it could have been me. So anyway I found a Ubuntu machine and plugged in the SD card in an adapter and can see that there is a successful partition, and that the EXT partition seems to have some files and folders in it.
I have also just noticed that the SD cards partitions also appear in the Titanium Backup overview screen.
So i guess my problem is that the memory is just full! Maybe my expectations of extra memory after rooting were unrealistic. ?
For the Record, just to make sure my situation is normal, in Titanium I see
System ROM - 262MB (129MB free)
Internal - 158MB (15MB free) - is this just a section of system ROM above?
SD CARD - 13.8GB (11GB free)
SD Card (a2sd) - 1.9GB (1.5GB free)
@xybadog this is my update,
@hoads1234 just want to share with you,
I use Cool Sensation v7, the internal memory full can be solved by flashing the additional zip for stock hboot but I flash non stock hboot. Why?
After some studying, now I know why expert keep asking for my hboot. Hboot define the data partition. On the phone memory, it divided into system, cache and data partition. the hboot define the partition size. For stock hboot, you will only have 147Mb for HTC Desire. Whatever the custom ROM symlink'ed some data partition, we stuck on 147Mb. If you flash like CM7r2 hboot, you will get more room (300+Mb) on data but just enough for system. "Internal memory" is referring to data partition.
Now I still have 130Mb free internal memory after installing 90 apps without wiping any cache for about 2 weeks.
I dont have Ubuntu even I know how to use it. No time to install or make virtual machine. To partition your sdcard easily without linux, use 4ExtRecovery. It is CWM based recovery plus support for Ext4 and some features like partitioning, check for aligned sd-ext and mount as disk drive.
To check for your current internal partition. boot into recovery, and use ADB to run command "df -h". The /system /data and /cache is the thing you need to look for.
You could use the cyanogenmod rom, then install s2e app from market. That app is designed purely for use with cyanogenmod. I use this combo, I have a huge amount of apps installed and still 50mb of internal space free. No need for changing your hboot or using data2sd rom. Very simple fix
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
okay thanks, I am still happy having a go with InsertCoin, so I will have a look at the hboot.
I think i read somewhere that i could do it just like adding a new ROM and copying a zip file across, so time for some more forum reading to work my way through this next step.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110921
okay here is my update, since in have revolutionary hboot, i tried to change to alpharev, so i could use their modified partition tables (found no reference of being able to do this in Revolutionary) - the folks on alpharev irc said not to, but didn't say why.
I did try and use the unrevoked tool to flash AmonRa across again, but this had a waiting for reboot error and may have failed. I have also reflashed my ROM again after a full wipe a couple of times. Not finding any improvements in memory, so will keep fiddling.
okay next question!
I tried the terminal emulator commands (once i worked out this was an app, and not the Mac terminal..) and got the following responses
app -> /system/sd/app
app-private ->
dalvik-cache ->
so am i guessing correctly that none of the apps i download are being sent to the SD partition.
Any advice to get app-private directed to my sd card?

I suggest you use ADB instead of terminal emulator because easy to type in PC.
Install Android SDK make ADB shell to work and connected to your device. The shell is just the same what you need to do in terminal emulator.
To move app private and dalvik cache simply make symlink like this:
Code:
busybox cp -a /data/dalvik-cache /system/sd/
rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache
ln -s /system/sd/dalvik-cache /data/dalvik-cache
The first will move all contents, the second will remove the existing original dalvik-cache folder. and the third one will make symlink to point from original location to the sd partition.

A2SD HELP!

I have been having nothing but problems with A2SD I decided to partition my EXT3 to 2GB and at first installed leedroid and have since moved to OxygeN both obviously show only around 120mb when I start phone I understand this. It doesn't show A2SD so I install quick system info that says I have 1.99GB A2SD storage. OK move to the future and I have around 14 apps installed and have ran out of space on my phone. internal storage 16.05mb A2SD free 1.85GB the phone is not installing apps to the SD card. It was the same for leedroid and for OxygeN. I have nearly all my A2SD space available. I have no apps moved to SD using Froyo-A2SD. I'm pulling my hair out as my phone refuses to let me download a 700k app from market now..
I tried wiping cache too it upped my free space to 17mb.

yep thats why i rooted It's an annoying problem.
To find out, if a2sd+ is working, open terminal emulator and type
Code:
su
ls -l /data
In the ouput you should find this
Code:
/app -> /sd-ext/app
/app-private -> /sd-ext/app-private
/dalvik-cache -> /sd-ext/dalvik-cache
If you cannot find this, partition your sd card with gparted again (save important data before this):
1.) Create fat32 partition (primary)
2.) Create ext partition (primary)
3.) Flash e.g. oxygen rom
At last, make sure you followed the instructions in leedroid thread step by step in the correct order.
is the code i should write 1 or i ?
Neither nor. It's an "L" in lower case character.
SwiftKeyed from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App

Apps2sd

my ROM is a apps2sd ROM. Ext sd is reporting use, i.e. I set 1g of ext and storage says 658mb of ext is free. But in applications my apps give me the choice to Move to SD! ?
I used TB pro to batch move apps to SD but altho my apps now report they are on SD. Ext usage actually went down after the move. Am I confusing Apps on Sd / ext ? So on roms with default apps2sd you ignore in applications that they appear to be on internal mem?

Yes ignore it. You've just moved your apps from ext to fat. Read the root memory faq in my signature

I've some A2SD questions as well. I'm on CM7 with several apps already installed. My 4GB SD card has already been partitioned to 3GB FAT32 and 1GB ext4.
I was getting low memory warnings so I applied the darktremors script (stable, not nightly) expecting it to automatically move my apps to the sd card like your a2sd guide said it would. However, I still got low memory warning, so I manually moved the app to sd card using manage applications. This however moved the apps to the FAT32 partition, and several of my apps suh as my clock widget and swype no longer work.
How to I get my existing apps to move to the SD card's ext4 partition?
They need to all be moved to phone.
The apps should automatically move to ext download quick system info to check a2sd is working.
If its not try "a2sd reinstall" from terminal emulator.
Dalvik-cache is not moved by default and takes up a whole load of space so don't forget "a2sd cachesd" too
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
OK, I thought the a2sd would move existing apps as well, didn't know I needed to "a2sd reinstall". Can I do the reinstall through an adb shell or do I need to download a terminal emulator?
I don't have a Class 4 card, it's a generic card and I don't know what class it is, so should I move the dalvik-cache to the cache partition using "a2sd cachepart" rather than "a2sd cachesd"?
Do I need to wipe cache and dalvik-cache before running any a2sd commands such as reinstall and cachesd/cachepart?
Lastly, do I need to reboot the phone after running these commands?
Thanks.

Ive never seen any performance issues even on class 2 cards. Keeping dalvik on NAND may give a miniscule performance increase, but I think its so negligible, you wont notice. But put it where you want. I recommend card though as you need the cache partition for downloads and as it fills with dalvik, it will limit the size of apps you can download from the market.
a2sd reinstall is for if it doesn't work properly. Its always the first thing to try. Then move dalvik. The way dalvik move works is that it wipes dalvik, moves the location then reboots the phone (rebuilding dalvik so expect delays when booting up the first time). For this reason its best to use "terminal emulator" from the market.
Hope this helps.
Alright, thanks! Will try reinstall and moving dalvik cache to the sdcard. Might get a new faster card since 4GB is getting tight anyway.
Tried the reinstall and it seemed to work. I had to move my apps back to the internal memory in 2 batches since I was running out of internal memory. So here's what I did
1. Move batch 1 of apps from sdcard back to internal memory
2. Run a2sd check in adb shell
3. Run a2sd reinstall in adb shell
4. After phone rebooted, checked my storage to find about 50MB of internal space left (woohoo!)
5. Move batch 2 of apps from sdcard back to internal memory
6. checked my storage to find still about 50MB of internal space left. I guess this means a2sd automatically moved them to the sd-ext partition?
When I ran a2sd check in step 2, the output showed that my ext partition type was ext2 rather than ext4 which I formatted the sd-ext partition to. Is this a mistake?
Will try moving dalvik-cache perhaps this weekend.
Are there any benchmarks I can run on the sdcard to make sure it's fast enough for dalvik-cache? Perhaps HDTach/CrystalDiskBench/ATTO/AS-SSD Bench/etc? There aren't any markings on the sdcard that indicates its class. It's a generic HP 4GB sdcard. Will a "dd if=largefile of=/dev/null" for read and a "dd if=largefile1 of=largefile2" for write work?
I've never known a card too slow for dalvik. Just move it. You can move it back again

I believe the ext2 is due to some error with a2sd check. I encountered it too when i used the command and i was using an ext4 partition.
As for dalvik, try moving it. If it too slow then move it back.

Sorry, yes its a bug, fixed apparently in the latest BETA.
Don't think I'll be playing with the phone for a while - it's my wife's phone, and it took almost a week for me to figure things out and start from stock to CM7 with A2SD...now it's relatively stable with quite a bit of internal memory available, so I think I'll keep it that way for a while.
Thanks for all the help!
Hello rootsu,
i installed a Data++ rom and now some applications that i install, not from market, disappear after a reboot. From the market it is fine but if i put a .apk in the card and install it, disappear after reboot. Not all of them. Only some of them.
I have a aura sygic gps and this is one of them that disappear after install. The only way that doesn't is to move to the card. And another one, that doesn´te have the option to move to the card, disappear after reboot.
I already wipe dalvik cache, wipe everytnhig, rom install again, etc...
What's the problem? Do you now? I've searched a lot but i cant find anything.
That's a new one on me.
Install, take titanium backup, boot recovery, factory reset, format /data, titanium restore?

Thanks, rootsu.
And when i go to install again, say that this will replace another application.
I already made a backup, when i have stock, and restore it and happens the same.
What to do?
Edit: I do a backup, only the application, with titanium, and when restore it and say error and dont restore the application.
Hello rootsu,
i modify de hboot to sense and all problems gone. Its good now. I think thats a problem with a Hboot Data++.
Thanks.
Ah maybe yes. Good work

Hello rootsu,
i install hboot sense and Leedroid 3.3.3 and works fine, but i have a question about cache file system. Why my cache system space is 202mb? In the AlphaRev 1.8 page the hboot sense as 40 mb. I dont understand.
The cache system space is from sdcard memory or memory phone?
Thanks
Although I am not rootSU, I feel free to answer:
I am pretty sure it uses space of SD Card. Using internal memory would be a little strange, especially we are talking about 160 MB here.
