Stock EG30Plus Kernel for Epic Touch 4g compiled from source, properly.
Proper initramfs
su 3, superuser.apk, and busybox
ClockworkMod 5 (Compiled by bubby323)
Various Virtual Machine, Kernel and Network Tweaks I've been using in my plus kernels for quite some time...
Guess I should mention:
Bootanimation support, either bootanimation.zip or sanim.zip
init.d support
Remove Superuser.apk if its not version 3 before installing.
Odin the tar.md5 file
Immediately update profile
Me and bubby323 have spent quite a bit of time getting this recovery working correctly, and squaring away his kernel.

Whoa snap, I've been waiting for this to test out with Rob's v2.0. Will see how it holds up to the stock deodexed I'm using right now.
is what a bug?
Will this give the damn triangle? By stock.. do you mean like the one pulled from a stock device?
by stock i mean compiled from source, and the triangle is just there until you load a custom bootanimation....

shouldnt it be under kernal, not under build number?
no, kernel version is the linux kernel version... which is displayed correctly, though a bit strange looking. the build number is just provided traditionally by a rom, or kernel, or whatever...
You guys will really enjoy this kernel. CWM 5.0.2.3! Yes! Thanks for making this for us Chris. Also, thanks bubby and everyone who was involved

I've used up all my thanks for the day on the 2 of you but thanks again. Been waiting on this.
Edit: Well I just flashed so haven't really got to test but my signal and down/upload speeds are WAY better!!!! Another thing I just noticed. I just got a news notification from Sprint Zone which is the first time I've ever gotten something from it since I've rooted.
I flashed this and then flashed back to stock (pulled) and now wifi will not connect.. how do I get back to stock (pulled) with working wifi?
Will be flashing this as soon as I get home.

Source code .zip is available for download on opensource.samsung.com. Enjoy
Edit: Apparently I screwed up when I extracted the contents of the zip Sammy posted. There is way more stuff in the source .zip than just kernel sauce. There is platform sauce too, which should allow developers to modify and compile other parts of the firmware besides the kernel. OK devs, have at it!

this code is junk
I've been trying all day long to get a kernel working, they compiled fine but no-go, I end up on boot freeze or bootloop, I've tried messing with the config file all day long, does anyone have any ideas why?
I think this open source code is junk, at least for now. There wasn't an official announcement from Samsung so this could be code from back in the days, the instructions also ask you to use an older arm compiler from 2009...
Damn it, my phone is bricked now.
I just found out how worthless my apps are without root. This touch whiz has forced me to lpp.

Probably, and I rooted my phone yesterday by using a galaxy s2 kernel. All I needed to do after that was to reflash a stock kernel, however, I blew it away to root the phone..so catch 22
I was planning on compiling a kernel from source, but like zedomax saw, the compiled binaries didn't work and put the phone into a bootloop. I guess I should have warned him, though at the time, I thought I was doing something wrong (first time doing anything so involved with an android device).
Now, I've an stock Epic 4G Touch sitting next to my frankenrooted device from the other day...if I can get the stock kernel off of one onto the other...viola, proper root access.
I'm in the exact same boat you two are in: bootloop after trying out my self-compiled kernel from Samsung's source code. If anyone gets a hold of a working kernel, care to post it somewhere so I can at least have a working phone again?

lol, samsung just blew us by this time, those open source files were like not open source somehow.
OK so, I was poking around the EVO 4G forum (I like to check in on my old flashing buddies every once in a while) and seen this ROM that I thought was sick! Its a tablet/phone crossover type thing with CM9.
CM9 Tablet/Hybrid
I would so love anyone that can port this to the Epic 4G Touch!!! I will confess my love to you! LOL.

WHAT?! I LOVE YOU MAN!!! Thanks so much!!!!
So.. is there just not enough interest in keeping a tabUI/hybrid rom current??
When AoKPm5 fell off the dev table, I was a little bummed, then PA was ported, and I felt like there was some promissing hope that we would be able to keep the development cruising along for the tabUI/hybrids..
Well.. maybe its just a matter of having the source for the ICS kernel for the E4GT, but with the "source" already floating around.. I'm thinking that the kernel source wasn't the hybrid answer.. I hope I am wrong here though..
Maybe if we have enough voice to say the hybrid roms are still wanted, the development will continue.. :/

Hey Chris, I've been avoiding TWRP cause I thought it had a more "heavy" process to replace your recovery from TWRP. Is all that is needed to restore back to a backup with agat or cwr recoveries would be to just go back to stock first with a one-click or something? Or is that even needed?
This is the only thing keeping me from testing anything with TWRP.

i dont understand the question? if you flash a rom with twrp you will have twrp, if you flash one with cwm you will have cwm.. its no different, just a different gui.. you dont have to go back to stock. or anything like that

I just thought I had read before that the only way to not run into issues after using TWRP was to go back to stock and then reinstall rom or backup after getting back to stock first.
If you don't have to do that and just factory reset is done from within FF18 (TWRP, CWR or Agats), then my concerns were mute at this point and I should have no problems going back and forth.
I am assuming that you are saying the latter is correct.
Edit: so if the latter is true, then I can flash kernels with different recoveries and they will overwrite eachother no problem? Does mobile Odin work the same if you have TWRP recovery?
The onther thing is that I didn't realize is that you helped or built TWRP, if that is the case, I would feel very comfortable using it, and I also didnt realize you built an FF18/CWR kernel.. I will have to grab that too..

yes i helped Dees_troy with twrp for this device, and I continue to help work on it, I consider it to be a great recovery...
I include it in my AOKP builds.. it includes safety features implemented and designed by Dees_troy and myself..
Those same safety features have been implemented in CM9 alpha6 and recent nightlies as well, so they are also safe.. which means those CWM versions are safe.
Any recovery made by me, Dees_troy, or TeamEpic since the release of TWRP would be considered safe..

IMHO I don't find Tablet UI on a phone useful or desirable, why a tablet UI on a small screen when you can enjoy it at its fullest on a Tablet. Just my opinion no pun intended to anyone. There is a reason to it not being enabled on a phone trust me.

I know some do not like it, but I personally think it looks better smaller, and compact. I do not find it difficult to read as some have described. There are many was to increase font size and still use the compact UI. I don't need to increase however as I like the size it is .. and even though most of the development for that mod has slowed, some roms still have it incorporated to use if desired. I myself have an excellent backup of AoKPm5 with the modded system apps so that everything works perfect.. but its stuck with FF02 as the latest kernel, I haven't tried the latest AoKP kernels with it yet.. maybe m5 will still work with TI, dees_troy & Chris's kernel but I'm not sure..
But anyways, my point is as with most every mod and customization we have for this device, ppl use what they like cause of personal preference and what they like.
You are more that free to not like the tUI mod, but there are still some that like it..

Saw the need for a flashable stock kernel, so here it is in both varieties.
Here you can find rooted/stock kernels for T-MOBILE 's USA version of Galaxy S III (SGH-T999).
This WILL NOT raise your custom binary counter.
-Insecure Means that adb daemon on phone is working as root.
-Secured is the way it came from sammy, no root access on adb.
If you need more answers on what an insecure kernel is, use GOOGLE.

I didn't want to create new thread for new repack.
I guess we can keep couple of kernels in one thread.
For those of you who would like to run stock kernels with the builds
here are repacked FH13 and FH23 kernels with my recovery and some init.rc edits.
SD card read speed.
Custom boot animation support
init.d support
FH13
1. FH13_AGAT.zip flash in recovery.
2. FH13_AGAT.tar flash with ODIN or Mobile ODIN.
FH23
This repack comes with AGAT tREC_v0.2.2
1.FH23_AGAT.tar flash with ODIN or mobile ODIN Mirror
2. FH23_AGAT.zip flash in recovery. Mirror
I have tested this repack with my tFF18 rom and it works.
So far no problems.
Hope you guys will enjoy it.

It's a stock kernel with custom recovery and small edits in initramfs.
Some users prefer to use stock kernel with stock builds.
I made it just in case.

Love having a stock kernel with recovery...Was using the the other stock kernel on here without the recovery on FF18 for about 4 or 5 hours tonight with no issues...I'm convinced that there's something wrong with that FF18 kernel...I've never had issues like on that kernel...I was back on EL29 for the past couple weeks...so far so good on this kernel...
I'm on rooted stock FF18 with this kernel now...no issues...I used the .tar - odin
thanks for making this!

Glad you like it.
I knew there would be users who will go for stock kernel.

Are you really asking about battery life after fresh flash and less than few hours use?
Lol damn AGAT when you coming over to the GSIII forum bro?
Not to sound like a douche but yes. I reboot twice after a fresh flash and charge to max. Then I use my phone like normal for an hr meaning screen is on and with 3g. At the end of one hr its usually sitting pretty at 80%. Sometimes 83 or sometimes 75 but that gives me an idea. I get about 10% drain per 30min on 3g with good signal thats my start point. This is how it was on gb and now on ics it has matched
Keep getting status 6 aborted when trying fo flash. Downloaded.zip three times

Well in last 3 hours I did reboot my bout 6 times.
I was on this kernel little bit over an hour. Did some test. Run some programs.
Other than that when I'm home I'm on my laptop trying stuff. Phone is next to me for testing mostly.
My battery tests are running from time I go sleep (never put my phone on charge over night) till next day when I come home.
I know kernel is somewhat good if over night I'm loosing not more than 5-6% battery.

...and of course! You, the community, for your support as well! Thank you!
NOTE:
All previous versions that I have worked on will no longer be supported.
Support for this thread will be as time allows, which may not be much.
We've done what we wanted to - leave the E4GT with some very good stuff.
Thats great stuff. Great job garwynn thanks to all whom worked hard on them. Will test sprint variant now for you.

So it is working nice. Loaded per Mobil odin...re started crisp.
Have opened all 60+ apps and fooled round. Started just fine. Wifi sync is fast...3g working. I don't have 4g so can't test. So far its awesome.

4g connected, then disconnected. I went into settings, scanned and then it connected. Went to window at got 8mb down, 2mb up. Gps locked to within 10 ft.
I should also give fair notice... with JB out and it being the final release (from notes I have read) these will be my last foray into E4GT development. I will continue my work on GN2 and am planning on hitting the GS4/GN3 hard this year.
The goal will be to leave the E4GT with the best possible based on what we have... and now with JB we have a lot!

Thanks for your work on this. Any idea if you will add in governors and under clocking?

Yes. Once I get the Linux version current I will work on that next. That way I can work on the same for 4+ kernels

Just curious. Did Samsung remove the line of code that triggers the emmc bug in the ICS kernels?

Their official patch is in now. A little different in coding but same result as we were already doing... disabling secure erase/trim. Just done by eMMC ID now.

Just tested moving apps to sd via Titanium Backup. On stock kernel it would cause apps to disappear but I'm happy to say that all apps are in tact. Great work Garwynn!
Any chance someone can upload a mirror of the tar? The main link is blocked at my work... :S
Otherwise, I'll just have to wait 8 hours! lol
Just to confirm because I have been away from the E4GT forums for a while this is a SAFE JB recovery?
Thanks to Garwynn and Agat you guys rock
