Rooting method - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I just wanted to as and see if this was correct. I have not worked much with samsung phones at all. After looking I thought this would be the easiest method for me to root the S2. Please tell me if this is correct.
Install Odin
Install Kies
Use Odin to flash the tar on this page with pre-rooted kernel and CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269437
Is this correct?

Yes.

Thanks for the confirmation. I didn't mention adb but I have the sdk installed from using it with my current phone.

Question: Can I get back to STOCK recovery?

I'm currently running on a STOCK rooted ROM with CWM recovery. Is there a way to get to stock recovery so I can accept OTA updates?
Thanks!

Yes. I did so and I used option 7 in the toolkit. But you can just download the stock recovery file from the dev section and flash it through the PDA slot of Odin.

Thanks, BTW would you have the link to the one to use in ODIN, Just not sure what search to do. THANKS!
I would recommend using the toolkit. I don't know where the file is for the stock recovery. The toolkit downloads all the files you need and simply walks you through the steps of using Odin to flash it. It even puts the device into download mode for you and opens odin for you. The only way it would be easier is if you didn't have to even navigate through Odin.
Or you could always go to the QBKing77 video that was linked earlier. He always has links in the description of his videos, and he's one of the best instructors out there at rooting, unrooting, and everything in between.

How to root Odin'd JB Official Update

I have not succeeded in getting a straight answer on this in the related development threads.
One way appears to be to Odin a recovery, but as I am using TWRP, but there is no .tar file out there that I can find (there was a link but its down). I have a TWRP .img, but do not want to mess with the commands to install it (bricks are a possibility). Also, since ODIN will completely repartition, Root Keeper is not going to work (the app itself says it won't).

just wait for the root66 file
Root66 is best way.
Fyi though. Any previous rooting methods should work fine.

I had found a TWRP tar, It installed OK, and I tried flashing SU, but it did not take (probably an old version).
Then I saw the Root66 and all is well. Since it was rooted, just let GooManager flash recovery.
Ya just odin'ed Doc's above link and it didn't put TWRP even though it said it was successful... first time I've actually attempted to flash a recovery via ODIN. Any tips while I search around.
Check if you have
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Delete and reinstall recovery.

Oh, I was under the impression that I didn't need root to do all this, lol. I remembered the CWM easy install thread, where you Odin the recovery then install a root .zip. Well, I'll have to do it the root66 method, and I have to go to work now, so tonight I guess. I have to be rooted all day long and deal with all this bloat now lol.
Its usually easy like before. But if youve applied an OTA it adds these files which rewrite recovery on boot. It how they update the recovery.

Try rooting your phone again via Root66 that is much easier than that + its a updated version of rooting and am assuming that recently you just got your phone?
and if your gonna root it again go for the JB version the pre-rooted one.
Root66

Use this guide can't fail. Remember to unchecked reboot on Odin. Or you will never have root. Cause when it reboot it reflashes stock recovery u need to flash su before you let it reboot. So after you install cwr with Odin remove battery and boot into recovery and flash su. And ur good to go.

Is there a way to root without using a computer? Like could I just rename the root 666 as update.zip and flash that in recovery?

No.
No... besides how could you flash anything in recovery when you need to push a custom recovery.img via pc? can't do that on a phone when you need root in order to flash a recovery from your phone. Only way to root without a pc is if there is a root exploit, like the Note 2 has, but the S3 doesn't have one as far as I'm aware.

No necessarily because you do have a stock recovery that allows you to flash a zip via update.zip

Is it possible to root without a pc yes, but I have no clue how it would be done and frankly I wouldn't want to do it. There were one click root apps available for certain phones at different points on the market but have no clue if there are any for the S3. I never used those though because at that point your completely dependent only on your phone with no access to your pc if you soft brick. If your going to use your pc in case you do soft brick then you might as well just use it to root also.

NO you cannot root without a computer.
But you can use Mobile Odin Lite and Odin flash the stock pre-rooted Tmobile T999 Jellybean v4.1.1
firmware using only your phone, here is the link for the firmware:http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426451
Here is the download link for Mobile Odin Lite: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1754368&d=1361632564
The mobile odin lite does the same thing as the Windows Odin does only it's easier and does not need a computer.
It's very easy to use, almost self explanatory and it installs like any other APK.
Good Luck!

Doesn't mobile Odin need root access to work?
OP, I'm not aware of any method of gaining root access on this phone without a computer.
I think we need more opinions on this matter.

Yeah, the reason i asked is because i have a Linux computer. Heimdall is all installed but it isn't working. Keeps giving me the same thing and its pissing me off. My first phone got dropped and got the inked all over the screen. Now i have a new one but no pc nearby to use to root it and it blows very very much. =(. Just want my root back.

Root bell 4.1.2

Just got a S3 i747m that already had the latest update installed, what does I use to get root, I have the all in one toolkit, that only goes as high as 4.1.1.
Anyone successfully rooted the latest update

Download cf-root. This will root the phone. Download and extract it. You will want to flash the MD5 file in PDA section in Odin. Here: http://download.chainfire.eu/269/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-d2can-d2vl-sghi747m.zip
If you want to install a custom recovery afterwards use these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2170635
The instructions are for CWM but the same applies for TWRP
I have done this on my Bell S3, I guarantee it to work.
