[Q] noob question regarding CWM - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm trying to flash CWM on my stock phone so that I can root it with stock kernel, but I have 2 questions to ask before I proceed.
I had my et4g since its release date and have quite a few apps and media files installed on the internal memory of the phone. If I flash my phone with CWM recovery, will it wipe out my phone's internal memory? If so, what will be the best way to backup all my existing apps and files?
Secondly, will I be able to use wifi tethering once I've performed the following:
stock -> cwm -> root.zip -> bubby's stock kernel
or, do I have to install something else in order to enable wifi tethering?
TIA

It's the only root method that will work for 2.3.3. There are different links and tutorials, but the method is the same.
Thanks...This is might be a dumb question but do I need to back everything up before I root the phone? Will I lose everything (setting, apps etc)

You'll only lose everything if you flash a new ROM. Rooting Android only unlocks the bootloader and thus allows you to flash customized versions of the recovery, ROM, kernel, etc.
See the guide in my signature. I wrote it so it is absolutely noob-proof, every step is explained in detail. Rooting through backups and flashing and setup. You can always PM me or post questions in here and I will reply as soon as I can
oh, ok...So, just to be clear...I plan on rooting my phone and installing a custom kernal that allows for wifi tethering and a superuser function. Theses to things will not affect the data on my phone?
Also, when an update (ie ICS) comes out will I have to unroot my phone to install it?
And one more thing...Is this the only way to tether? I'd be ok with wired tethering

What exactly do you mean by data on your phone? Apps and stuff? Or something else?
If you are in my guide, here is what you need to do:
Do all of post one.
Download flashable superuser from here
You should still be in recovery mode.
Plug up phone to your computer. Select "Mount as MS" in main menu of recovery.
Your computer should pop up with "Removable Disk".
Move the Superuser zip to your phone.
Unmount once transfer is done.
Return to the main screen of recovery. Navigate to Wipe.
Select cache, it will wipe.
Select dalvik, it will wipe.
Return to main screen of recovery. Go to "Flash zip from sdcard".
Find the Superuser file and select it with power button.
Reboot.
You now have root privileges!
I think you said you wanted a custom kernel. See post 4 and follow everything in there. Follow these directions:
Let's assume you already have a ROM on your phone. How to flash:
Download the kernel you want, then transfer it to your phone in disk drive like we talked about earlier.
Boot into recovery.
Wipe cache and dalvik in Wipe menu. Twice.
Navigate to "Mounts" menu. Mount everything except for SDext.
Navigate to Flash zips from sdcard and find the kernel zip. Select with power button.
Reboot and enjoy!
Note, the stock hotspot is not "hacked", so you won't be able to use it. Go to Market and download Wireless Tether.
Whenever you want to flash custom ROMs and more, come see my guide for any help you need or feel free and PM me
Everything I described, you would not lose anything on your phone.
Never unroot except to take your phone to Sprint for repairs. Don't unroot for an update. Back when Gingerbread came out, a large number of people unrooted for it. They got stuck with a bootloader that could not be cracked for several months.

If you have unlimited data, then you're fine. The roms have hacked hotspots that you can use, or use wireless tether. The evo most likely won't get an offical ICS update; you'd backup your rom, and flash the custom ics rom. You can use wifi or wired tether.

Custom kernels will not affect your user data. However, if you choose to install mods like viperMOD and V6 Supercharger in the future, installing a different kernel will clear these settings.
As far as I know, the only way to get updates would be to flash either a rooted version of the official update, or flash a custom ROM, such as CM7, which updates regularly with the latest version.

What is the difference between flashing from a TAR file using Odin and Clockwork Mod?

Hello,
I was going to try out a near stock root but it requires clockwork mod. The only overwrite of my previous stock was using Odin and a tar file.
Can someone help me out and explain why or if there is much a difference between a tar overwrite and using CWM?
Also can you just install CWM on the stock and then flash it?
tar files are what ODIN uses to flash your phone. ODIN is an application that runs on your PC and communicates with your phone over the USB cable using ODIN protocol. ODIN can pretty much flash anything on your phone, so just saying you used ODIN to flash your phone doesn't tell folks trying to answer your question anything useful. You need to tell use which tar file you flashed.
CWM is a recovery program that runs on your phone. It takes signed zip files and installs them. It can also flash things like kernel and ROM, and with some versions of the kernel can flash full modems as well. It can't flash as much as ODIN can, but it can flash most of what you would find useful.
If you started from stock, you can root your phone and install CWM using the Auto Root thread in my signature.
I've been using sfhub's scripts for the last few weeks. Highly recommended and well documented.

Thanks. The file I think I ran before was acs-eg30-stock-kernel-pulled.tar. My phone got the OTA update to 2.3.6 and I'd like to root it again so I can tether again. I was going to install Calkulin's Stock Rooted EL13 Rom as I think that will enable to me to tether again.

That would root you but you would need to root your current version first and install CWM (you would have lost root after the EK02 OTA upgrade) before you could install that.
If you want a complete EL13 system, my suggestion is you use Titanium to backup your user data, then ODIN the FULL EL13 rooted system. This will give you EL13 Modem, Kernel, and ROM (pre-rooted) in a single operation.
[ODIN][TAR] SPH-D710.EL13_CL806482 (EL13 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Full Restore - Rooted)
Then restore your data.
There is also a "NoData" version of the ODIN tar file, which is the same as above, but doesn't reset your User Data (meaning you keep your existing User Data). I would suggest the latter for folks who know what they are doing because you may need to clear dalvik-cache and possibly android market data.
The full install that resets your user data is a "cleaner" install but both will work.
You'll be rooted after installing that. If you want CWM, just use the Auto Root thread:
[ROOT][NCIQ][EG30/EG31/EK02] Auto root your existing stock ROM (w/o ODIN/ROM Flash)
and choose Option C to install EL13+CWM.
Thanks - I'll try to do that today.

Given where you are currently at and considering you want to end up with a rooted el13, that would be the fewest steps.
So far no real issues. I did have the marketplace issue which is mentioned in the thread and clearing it took care of it. I've only played with my phone for about 30 minutes since flashing but I should know more by tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.
After using this one for a day, I'd probably recommend not using it quite yet. I've had lots of dropped calls, inability to use the internet on a regular basis and GPS seems way off. I've been using my phone for a few months now and haven't had this kind of bad luck in the past even with my previous rooted version of this phone worked great. While it was certainly easy, I don't think this version of the ROM is ready yet.
I'm sure the person who created it knows 1000 times more about android than I do but this one has problem with voice/data that needs a little work still so I'd hold off on it until that is tweaked. Or it could be that Sprint is having some serious issues with their network in Connecticut.

[Q] Newbie to root and flashing

Hi everyone, I have been lurking the forums for a while looking at info but I want to be sure before I brick this thing. I satrted with an EL29 and did the EL29 stock+ roo from qb king as well as the CWM+rogue for the EL29. Now I am looking to flash to just a GB ROM, no ICS, (Caulkin's maybe?). I want to knwo if I can go about it with what I have installed or if I shoudl flash to EL26 with Odin (if I can even do so?). I know thei has probably been asked a million times, but its so much information I dont even know what to look for. I appreciate the input everyone.
EL29 rogue is sufficient for flashing gb roms, feel free to flash away. The issues are from returning to gb front ics

Okay, so I can do the nandroid backup, and wipig of the disk and cache using the rogue CWM?
Yep. Your good to go!
okay, so i downloaded this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
and i put it in the external sd
I also put the format all zip in the sd to be used first.
I have a nandroid backup and Titanium backup done.
Ill run the format all script then the rom flash after and I should be good? am I missing anything? I would hate for my next post to be that I bricked the thing lol
go grab it

Go to this location and download Calkulin's format all application.
What does it do? - Well my friend this masterpiece of technologically advanced mechanics and engineering does everything you need to do before you flash a ROM, automatically!!
But to be serious just download and put it into you external-SD card, or internal, and then enter CWM, volume-up+power, and then find where you put it into and then select flash and let it do it's magic. It's best to do it twice just in case.
Then flash the ROM, but be warned!, I wouldn't touch Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs until you become proficient in flashing terminology and techniques.
There are TONS of bricks involving "noobs" trying to flash ICS. So it's best you avoid it.
That's it man, you got it. Run calks format all and then flash that beast. Don't get impatient. It may take a little time to flash and then boot.

Let me double check out loud:
1.flash format all
2.wipe cache, dalvik-cache
3.flash ROM
4.reboot
5.connect to internet and download titianium backup
6.restore backups of the applications
7.have fun? lol
You are doing it right.
Titanium backup to SD card (for apps etc.)
Nandroid to SD card using Rogue CWM [as long as it is not TOUCH VERSION!]
back to recovery. Install zip from SD, choose Calkulin's format all.
Back and Install zip from SD and choose the ROM.
As a note; you may be able to get away with using the 'Modified format all' - save data. But if you start getting errors and force closes go back and use the format all.
Also don't forget to update your PRL and Profile afterwards too.
A few more questions, and I really appreciate it guys.
Where is my nandroid backup stored normally, I used the rogue CWM (I am assuming default location) and it finished but I dont know where it was saved.
Also, do I need to change or update the modem after I flash the ROM or no?
Finally, I guess I wont need to access the nandroid backup again unless I want to revert to an old ROM? would that be all I have to do if I decide I dont want to keep Calk's ROM?

The Nandroid is usually in your external-SD card, unless you don't have one, then it's in your internal storage. To access the Nandroids, to change the name, put your phone into debugging mode(settings-->applications) and then connect to your computer and select "view files".
A quicker method would be to use the built in app called "my files" then select clockworkmod(It might be in your ex-sd).
No you don't NEED to update your modem, only your PRL and Profile.
You don't have to mess with the Nandroid backup unless you want to revert back to whatever ROM you backed up.
For me its on external sd in a folder called clockworkmod. You can rename them to identify easier, ex: blazer_4.1_may11. Just make sure there are no spaces or it wont work on restore. Modems are completely interchangeable. You can flash any modem on any rom whether its gb or ics. just flash cache and dalvik cache first and update prl and profile upon reboot
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Edit: when switching roms you must completely wipe using format all. When I upgrade the same rom to a newer version, I normally get away with the modified format all. That way you don't lose any data or settings. If things start force closing and acting wonky, you know you then have to wipe and start over fresh.
Feel free to ask away. better you get the answers before you break your beautiful phone. Good luck!
Thanks everyone, I am now ROMmed. I appreciate everyone's input. I also installed the ACS ICS theme and it looks awesome. I'm glad I got clarification here. Now I read about flashing to EL26+ last official CWM before doing any ICS flash? I dont plan to but I want to know for when I do decide do (if before the official release)
Also on a side note, and I think this is better posted on the ROMS thread, but for anyone with Caulk's 3.0 mod, is there a way to disable the volume keys turning on the screen? its kind of a pain lol
Yes, el26 is the gateway to ics. How I do it is mobile Odin its a handy tool. Flash el26 tar in mobile Odin and it will reboot hold power + vol up till you get to recovery. wipe and flash ics. To get back to gb or to update an ics rom, I always mobile Odin el26. Its really easy actually once you do it. I understand the fear with all the bricks happening. The main plus either mobile Odin is I can flash on the go without a pc

I was on stock nonrooted never flashed anything EL29,downloaded the update from EL29toFD24zip put it on my external SD card and flashed from stock recovery. Is it going to be a pain to get back to stock unrooted or rooted EL29?

thanks a lot man. I did a bunch of forum searches until i found some stuff on it. Another question, do thee phones take forever to charge for everyone else?

[Q] HOW-TO? Clean ENTIRE phone, Manual or Superwipe?

IDK if this is ever an issue for new users but When I search I never find the exact thing I wish to know but much close to it.
In all My 16GB phone as of yesterday with no media or installed apps my phone had only 1 GB free and the filesystem was full of folders from old apps. I had installed and uninstalled many apps and flashed many roms, Which I believe left many leftover files. So I was told to format the System Partition and either restore or install a new rom. Since my latest nandroid was ICS based I decided to start fresh (also to clear up as much space I could.
My question now is, I still have many extra files from uninstalled apps. My phone now has 6.8GB of the available 11.8GB according to Windows 7.
So to completely START CLEAN what is the best method? (I will have a nandorid backup and a rom to install both on my pc and on my External SD Card)
Using CWMR,
Format System, Then Format SdCard? Then the Steps Required to install The Specific ROM you will now install.
Is the SdCard partition the usable space? If it is then the System Partition Contains all System Files and leftovers from flashing Roms and Kernels? If that is correct then Is the SdCard Partition basically the Users Space for apps and Media and what Shows up on the PC and The user Directory once Rooted?
Is this The Best way to do it? I have Seen Superwipe although have not found a page specifically about it. I have found versions of the script for many devices. Since their seems to be one available for the Samsung GS3 should i just flash that (I see it on the page for installation of the Xquizit Rom) and on an older post for another device said that it would "wipe /boot /data /system /cache and /devlog" then it says your phone is ready to install the rom (on the page i forget the rom or device it was for).
So to Clean my phone to the point that it is as close to possible as being new and this is the first rom to be installed and the first apps to be installed, when i install apps.
To accomplish this Should I? Use CWMR and manually format the system and the sd card partitions? or use the Superwipe script from the Xquizit Rom page?
Lastly but Most Importantly to use Superwipe do I simply just flash the zip? Also if i do it manually Have i described the correct way to do it?
Last of all Thank you and Sorry Its I just have never done this and as i still haven't even paid off my phone I don't want to Brick this phone at ALL.
Since this post has no reply's but some views that means i either asked a question that either A. has been asked and answered and i have not found it. or B. This is something that is so easy its never really been an issue.
If its A. Could someone be kind and just link to a post, or post the correct search term as I have been unable to find it.
If its B. Then to close this will I have a problem formatting the SD-card the same way I formatted the system partition
Also is their a Superwipe how to? and does it do what i think it does (basically format your hole phone in one easy step by running a script via your recovery mod?
I just don't want to brick this phone when it comes to formatting it just scares me for the first time.
Use the Odin software for a clean install. It wipes partitions, radio's everything. You can choose to intall a rooted Tmo update with Odin so that way you are ready to go. Just flash CWM with Rom manager after using Odin and you are ready to flash any rom you want.

Will Odin even replace custom recovery and radio with the stock recovery and radio? Or must that be done manually?

Yes ODIN will replace everything. I suggest using the pre-rooted route66 file for ODIN in Doc's thread I referenced above. It saves a step.

What's the best way to update since I can't update with the version that sprint pushed out since I'm rooted. Is it like a hacked version of the update that I can just update with? Yeah I'm a noob at this.
Thanks!
Not sure if your talking about 4.2 which is to my knowledge only with cm 10 or liquidsmooth or aokp most likely or 4.1.2 md4 either case download the appropriate file of your choice and flash from recovery do make sure backup amyways hope that answers your question

Deviant Xone (linked in my sig). Awesome 4.2.2 ROM.
If you're going to any AOSP rom, be sure to update your recovery to the latest!
Also - Create a 0 folder in the root of your internal storage and move all of your files into /sdcard/0 (and I mean everything, files, folders, etc.) When you boot into latest recovery, it'll treat the sdcard/0 as your sdcard root folder. Once you flash an AOSP based rom, it will always use sdcard/0 as the root so if you create the 0 folder prior to flashing, you'll have all of your internal memory accessible.

I'm running stock rom that I rooted... The phone version as of now is 4.1.2... as of 1 week I recieved an over the air update from sprint. I was thinking its 4.2 something maybe? maybe I wrong. I was wondering how could I get that update to install? Would i have to un-root then re-root?
Thanks!

Hey six3onei,
I'm assuming you just got the notification for the OTA (Over-The-Air) update. The newest version of the Stock Rom is MD4 which is still 4.1.2. Android version 4.2.x probably won't come out for your phone for a couple of months (that's my guess with no data to back it up other than my own intuition).
As far as upadating, you actually don't have to apply the OTA to get the latest and greatest for our phone. All you have to do is flash Freeza's Stock Rooted Rom (You'll want the DeOdex MD4 Rom). It'll give you the most up-to-date Stock Rom with Root. I've linked and quoted a previous post I made which will give you directions to flash it. Also, CNexus has done a great guide about OTAs over in the general sub-forum. I suggest giving that a look-through.
Also, just a note on the flashing sequence below: In step 4 below, if you're coming from a stock Rom and you're going to a stock Rom, all you have to do is wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. If you're going to a different Rom, it's best to do a full wipe (in my opinion).
Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!
