I bought a few weeks ago an Xperia Play locked on the 3 Network of UK. I removed the sim locked through one of the many sites that offer this service (htccode to be exact) and debranded it through wotanserver.com.
The problem I have is that I tried unlocking the bootlader of the device to no avail since I just can't enter fastboot mode no matter how many times I try (the blue light just doesn't light up). I've read quite a few other posts on this forum and a few other sites but I just can't find a clear answer as to why this is happening. I mean I unlocked the sim lock, I changed the firmware with a "clean one" and still it refuses to enter fastboot mode.
I tried rooting my phone through Gingerbreak or Superoneclick but they didn't work either. Is there any method (preferably an easy one) to root my phone? It's on Android 2.3.3.
Just a quick update to inform you that after a little more tinkering I managed to root my phone, and I might as well share with you how I did it.
Basically again using the wotanclient I returned my FW to 2.3.2 and tried Gingerbreak again. This time it worked like a charm! I also discovered that in 2.3.2 the 3g that didn't work on 2.3.3 now works like a charm so I might stuck with this FW for a while longer (maybe I will try 2.3.4 at some point as well).
Your bootloader is locked by your provider and it won't help unlocking the sim nor debrand it with flashing another FW. That's why it didn't help doing the stuff you did.
Look at this thread for unlocking the bootloader and accessing fastboot (it'll cost some money though, not much afaik):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232050
Further more gingerbreak/superoneclick etc. only works on gingerbread 2.3.2 as the loophole got patched in the higher builds. So if you want to retain root when updating do it by OTA or if you get fastboot going you can do it via CWM (clockworkmod) with a flashable .zip.

or you can flash doomkernel (which has many advantages, but again, need to enable fastboot mode on your phone, to then unlock bootloader before you can flash the kernel)
i highly recomend using alejandrissimo's service. i did, and i've never looked back
Is there a way to downgrade my phone's fw if im on 2.3.3?

Yes there is mate. I take you have a R800i.
Go to the dev section and find a FTF file of FW build 2.3.2. Then grab flashtool 0.2.9.1 beta. Flash the FTF file and there you go. Downgraded and ready to root.
There's an easier way to root now, i take that's why you want to downgrade, just use the zergRush to do it. That works on any FW build. Check out the dev section for a thread about 'rooting with zergRush'.
Regards Dousan...
I forgot about the zergRush post cuz I bookmarked it but didn't read it that well. Are their bugs for doing it on the higher fw tho?

Edit: gave the most possible bad advise due to misreading.
Other way is to download seus, Sony Ericsson update service, and update through that, but for sure you lose your root rights than.
Further on all your answers will be here on the first page, so you could have done some reading first, than you would have found out asking this question is a bit ought...

Settings/about phone/
Software update, your phone will check if there is an update available.
With the ota, over the air, update you have a chance you still have a rooted phone.

OTA for unlocked bootloaders will brick your phone. There is a fix for that now though.
Be careful of the advice you give.
You are right, I didn't read that, my apologise!!

You have to install flashTool 0.2.9.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Then get the updated firmware 3.0.1.A.0.145 or 146 https://rapidshare.com/files/4055154....146_Global.7z. You can keep your settings (option i FlashTool).
Then get the rootexperia.zip from Bin4ry http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130639 and flash it via recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14903452&postcount=169
Hope this helps
Just flash a 2.3.3 ROM (preferably rooted) with fastboot. Look in the Development section for a ROM. Its fairly easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044201
There lots of ROMs and a very good tutorial how to flash using fastboot.
very thanks i try
i have tray and work. Very thanks
My phone keeps nagging me saying there is an update available, I had previously unlocked my bootloader to get root and relocked it with Blagus's method, I try and preform the official update to no avail, the update takes place phone reboots and when it turns back on it says "Could not update software" I am also having a hard time doing so on my PC with the companion software, It will not detect my phone in media transfer mode.
Sorry for the block of text but this is annoying me, I want the new update
Thanks in advance
Have you deleted/frozen anything or installed the leaked home.apk/market.apk?
Try to unmount your sdcard before connecting it, i've read someone had success that way to get it to connect/find device.
Regards Dousan...
Yes, I have removed a fair amount of crap as well as installed the new market and leaked launcher.
If I unlock my Bootloader again, flash a 3.0.1.A.0.145 version to get all the crap back and then use SEUS to bring it to the new update?

No need for unlocking your bootloader as you can just flash the FW you stated with flashtool and then root with gingerbreak and then without doing anything else update OTA to newest. Only OTA will preserve root
Or you can unlock your BL and flash FW 4.0.A.2.368 posted by @thomassafca with flashtool and then flash doomlords kernel v3 for the same FW virsion as above, with fastboot. It comes prerooted and with su/superuser/busybox installed and then flash kernel.sin with flashtool (SE stock kernel) and relock your BL if you wish.
Regards Dousan...
e: The removed crap is the reason why you can't update
You rule, Thanks for the info. I think i'll go down the flashing the update and kernel route.
Hey all, I’m pretty new to this, have been reading throughout this forum and others for weeks. I got a few things I would REALLY appreciate some help with.
I have a SE ARC lt15A running 2.3.3 with 3.0.1.a.0.145 firmware. (I’m in Canada, phone is with Rogers) I bought it locked and unlocked it as I used it for a recent trip to europe no problem there.
It seems very slow like when I press the button for my contacts it takes about 5 seconds to open, so this brings me to where I am now, I’d like to put cyanogenmod on it and get rid of all the pre-loaded stuff.
Do I need to update the firmware before I put on cyanogenmod?
If so I can’t seem to get FastBoot to recognize phone.
But I can get Wotanserver to recognize my phone, there are different firmwares but none from Canada, can I use another region firmware on my phone and have it still work on with my carrier?
I don’t know if this matters but I was trying to flash firmware earlier and phone stopped working, was able to restore it with SEUS, can that lock my phone again?
Could be that i missed a thread that answers my questions, if so would appreciated being pointed in right direction.
Thanks again

mate i have the same issue. the thing is that once we (you) bought the phone locked the bootloader is locked and it cant acces fastboot - even if u got the unlocking code and even if uwill flash debranded firmware. there is no way to do so now. all u can do is root it and get rid of some bloatware. - yes root it without unlocking the bootloader. check out android dev section and DOOM'S version for windows! perfect and easy.
thats the only thing u can do so far - the same as me. just wait.
thanks
What's doom's version for windows? Can you point me to it? Is it better/easier to use than Gingerbreak?
Also can i update the firmware with a different region without screwing up my phone/provider? Is it possible to get 2.3.4 on a branded phone or do i have to wait for SE to release it for my region?

Make a backup of your ROM with PC Companion or Update Service then flash the latest firmware and root.
You can flash any arc firmware onto any arc.
If you still want fastboot enabled then contact me

Thanks guys i'm installing Doomlord.
For anyone else like me who dont know much of what their doing, i flashed 2.3.4 US on my phone with wotan but then had to add apn for rogers to get 3G back.
I just bought a couple of days ago mi new Xperia ZL, i think the phone is great, but today when i tried to get mi phone rooted, i realized the bootloader is locked.
Im kind of new at this, but i really dont know why mi phone is on that status, so does that mean that i never be able to fully root mi phone?
I tried to do it with a dooloard applicatión, but it seems that the android compilation version is not compatible with the doomlord software.
Could someone help me please! i want to erase all the garbage from my service provider.
I have a Xperia Zl C6502, 10.1.1.A.1.253
By the way, Im From Guatemala, sorry for the crappy english.

A locked bootloader doesn't stop you from rooting. Mine is locked (and is unlockable) and I have root.
Use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332407

In order to root the 253 build, you need to follow Nut's thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299092
Read everything carefully before doing it, I think the build 253 was the most complicated build to root not because it's hard but it has more steps than any other builds.
Why don't you upgrade to the latest 4.2.2 build 244. It's very stable and good. Plus, it's easy to root.... :good:
Even if your BL is locked, every build can be rooted.

You are not getting the OTA because your carrier is not pushing it. If your phone is branded to xyz carrier than you need to wait for them to push their new bloaded firmware via OTA.
If you flash the Sony generic firmware, you will be getting OTA's as soon as Sony pushes them out.
If you want to flash your phone to the latest Sony generic, you will need:
Flashtool : http://androxyde.github.io/
PC Companion
C6502 FTF: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389305
Installed drivers for your Xperia ZL (can be found inside Drivers folder when flashtool is installed)
This thread has screenshots on how to use flashtool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
Don't forget to Turn on "Unknown sources" and "USB Debugging" before flashing the phone.
Once you have flashed this firmware, you will root by
1 - Flashing the FW 423 Kernel ONLY
2 - Reboot and root with DoomLord's latest exploit (v.18)
3 - Flash back the FW 244 Kernel ONLY
4- Reboot and you are done!
Happy flashing!! :highfive:

Unlocked bootloader allows you to flash custom kernels so that you can flash cooked roms which may require a custom kernel. If you like the Sony stock rom and just want to root on it then dont bother unlocking it.
Also, rooting doesnt void your warranty, unlocking your bootloader does.
Glad everything worked out for you!
Hi,
I have the CDA 1280-7858 Sony Xperia Z1 Compact model. I have yet not been able to upgrade my phone to latest lollipop, since T-mobile UK have not released it yet.
My phone is carrier unlocked, but bootloader CANNOT be unlocked, this leaves no possible way for me to add a custom rom , right?
What are my options here? Sit and wait forever or just get a new phone?
As you can see in the attachment, only T-mobile remains on the 14.4.A.0.157 release in the UK carriers.
You can always flash stock or custom stock based lollipop from some other region. You don't need unlocked bootloader for that. There are a couple of them prerooted+dual recovery in general z1c forum.

Ok, but this would erase my phone completely right? i would use flashtool to upgrade?
Is t here any reason why its taking so long to get the OTA update? I mean, optimally, i want that one and not really need to bother to reset the phone entirely for this update.
You can always make a backup in recovery (I'm thinking you have a recovery already) just in case you don't like lollipop (I didn't). You lose any app installed and preferences (for sms u can backup those and contacts you can sync with Google account) so you will have to reinstall those. If you want root for your phone you need one of those prerooted ones and those are flashed from recovery usually. Best thing is to read the instructions in those threads.
I don't have recovery mode i think. Since this comes with unlocking bootloader, which i CANNOT on my phone.. (its not possible, not even paid with jinx13).
You don't need unlocked bootloader for recovery. Just go here http://nut.xperia-files.com/ and browse to XZDualRecovery > XZDualRecovery 2.8.15 > Z1C-lockeddualrecovery2.8.15-RELEASE.installer.zip and install that from your PC (with the phone connected to your PC via USB). I think you need to enable USB debugging before doing this and you definitely have to be rooted. You should read around how to install stuff there are some guides and resource threads in General forum.
Edit: Also get the flashable version and store it somewhere safe on your phone. Anytime you flash a new ROM you need to also flash the recovery else you have to connect phone to PC and do the install version and that takes longer.
Thanks templeka, I have been unsuccessful in any attempt to root this phone also.. What would be the best way? it just seems to be locked in all ways possible for me to get this done.
edit: i tried the towelroot selection 3 from file you suggested.. it just stopped after libdvm opened (loljavasucks), and after reboot, i was unable to enter recovery mode. (pressed volume up or down, and there was no light on any diode, at any time)
You need to flash a stock .108 rom, root and install dual recovery.
Towelroot will not work on v157. Follow the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2977774
In short you need to flash v108 kernel, root and flash v157 kernel back with Flashtool. Be sure to install the necesary drivers after installing Flashtool (they are in the folder where you installed it).
Sorry for being noob still.. But how do i enter flash mode now? I mean reboot and holding volume down will only enter Safe Mode of the phone. (i think its because i have the wrong kernel?)
Just when i was about to give up.. 14.5.A.0.270 just released on t-mobile.. FINALLY!
