Wireless N - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have one of the first set of Incredibles that went out. When I go to hardware, I only see wirless b/g listed. Is there something I have to do to enable wireless N? (This is the case no matter what ROM I use)

I dont think the incredible got N support until the latest gingerbread ota (or at least thats what i've been told). However even with the new ota there is a mistake where it still only says b/g, even though it supports n too. You can easily change this if you want by editing your build.prop file in /system.

I am running 2.3.4. I have wireless n at home and I don't see the n network listed on my phone.

Its there and working, do a speed test. It is just a mistake made by htc that makes it say its only b/g when it supports n also.

How's a speed test going to tell you anything when very few have a broadband connection that outstrips what .11G will provide?

But my wireless n network doesn't show up on the network list on my phone. I only see my b/g network.

Ah i see what your saying now you have a dual band router and it only sees the b/g and not the n. Not sure i really dont know much about it just that i was told in another thread that our phones got n with the new gb ota, ive never actually cared to test it, its fast enough for me what ever it is b g or n.

Maybe we need a 802.11n driver?

Over mine as well

I always wondered if our phone ever could use wireless n.

Ok our phones or more our kernels dont have n support built it. However tiny has just implemented the fix from above into one of his kernels. It is not full N but it supports the 2.4ghz N band with the speed capped at 72mbps (by our hardware I believe), but thats better than the 54mbps I use to get.

I think it's due to only having one wifi radio according to that link provided so that is hardware, nothing that I can do about that.

very few? my cable company has the lowest tier at 30/5 how many people out there have fios and there are other benifits to 802.11n such as lower power usage higher bandwidth longer range and signal encryption...
the 4 tiers i have are
limited 1/1 Mbps
xtreme 1.0(this is what i got)
30/5 Mbps
xtreme 2.0
50/10 Mbps
xtreme 3.0
100/15 Mbps
all on a small midwestern isp

Even if your internet dosen't provide N speeds your network still can wich means faster phone to pc transfers or viceversa over wifi. Network link speed can be tested with many different aps, and can also be seen when clicking on a wifi network you are connected to in the settings menu.

Increassing 3g Speed

So I have spent 2 hours searching for some way to adjust me setting in order to speed up my 3g speeds. Could someone please post any changes to my settings that might speed up my 3g speeds.
Move to a 4G area? Its not a car, you can't just make it go faster.
Thanks
I didn't know if there we some teaks in the ##data# menu that I could change to increase my speed. Where I live I am right outside 20 miles from Eugene Oregon that just got 4g. My service here at my home is less than desirable so I am actually using a Verizon prl.
No need to be rude man. The guy was just tryin to improve his philone.

For those lots of people, they're imagining things. This will increase your data speed about as effectively as different color back cover on it. It is just as unrelated.

I find it that if you free up your phones memory you can maximize performance ,including but not limited to speed.

AFAIK, you're limited by whatever towers you have in your area and then by Sprint's cap. If you live in an area with poor reception, maybe you could buy a signal repeater or amplifier or something like that. If you have wifi available at work or at home, that's always a good option for faster data.
The phone should use as much speed as the tower can/will give it... although someone correct me if I'm wrong
3G speeds are comparable to "broadband" (you know, vs. a modem lol) but they are no match for modern DSL/Cable and from what I read (YMMV) current 4G isn't either.

Also completely unrelated to data rate and what are you doing to "fill up" the memory to the point it hurts performance?
I'm running Damage 3.2.3 and with JIT enabled my WiFi and data speeds are a bit faster. JIT does come with some instabilities though. You might also want to try a Froyo Rom. The JIT performance from those are insane.

Obviously not, however when i dont clear the running tasks, and i have lets say 40mb of mem avl...the internet perfermance is affected.

Actually, through SpeedTest my data and WiFi numbers are higher with JIT enabled than without. Wasn't trying to get all technical. It was just my observation.
Actually, you should be looking into the issue where the PRI is not updating because we downgraded the bootloader to the ENG version to gain root access.... I think that this is an issue with all rooted devices. My GF has an unrooted EVO, and I ran a side by side comparison using the FCC speed test app, and my 3g speeds were less than 50% of hers(0.60 Mb/s compared to her 1.20-1.60 Mb/s).
rooted devices seem to have PRI version 1.34_003(or at least mine does), and my GF's and her brother's have PRI version 1.40_003.... this was the only software difference that I could see when comparing devices.
not sure if I am correct on all of the bits of info here... just something that I noticed.... feel free to correct me

It definitely works, but the general consensus was to leave it disabled because the speeds were not that much greater. Once the increased battery draw was taken into account it is really not worth it.

Yeah, I can't even come close to maxing out my g connection with my phone. So the shortened range/worse battery definitely not beneficial to me, at least.
sorry for the bump but ive been trying to see if there was an OTA update with the Wireless N working. ive heard a couple different things like it has better range to pick up wireless signals and some have said it has worse range. i dont really care about download speed...

How do you enable the Wireless N on the Dinc's? Kinda important to me cause I cannot enable just N due to Dinc using G. With my router if I can enable N only I can connect up to 450M within the network.

Painfully Slow Wifi

So I just realized what I had always suspected: my wifi is terribly slow. I've had my inc for 7 months and I rarely turn wifi on at home because its simply not worth the 10 seconds or so it takes to get started. I just did a speed test on my inc and got .85 mbps. My computer gets 27 with Comcasts speed boost but usually around the 15 mbps that I should be getting. I have a laptop in the other room that gets 17, and my ipod touch gets about 10. But no matter what I do, I get less thatn 1 mbps on my inc. The upload speed is about 2.5, where its about 3.5 on the Ipod, but that's not the issue. Does anyone know of anything I can do with my router settings or inc settings or do I maybe just have a bad wifi chip?
I'm currently running OMFGB btw.
yeah, my wifi is pretty damn slow on mine too. sometimes it'll say its getting 5-6mbps with speedtest, while my computer gets 15-20.

Try checking what channel your wifi is using. If you are in a highly populated area (ex. an apartment complex), your router may be on the same channel as several others which can dramatically slow down your performance. You might have a wireless b/g/n router and your laptop can see the n frequency (5G) while our Inc's can only see the b/g frequency (2G), and in that case, that is why your computer is getting better performance. Most newer computers (and some older) can see this 5G frequency, while most mobile devices can only see the 2G, which is why you're phone's speed is slowing down. Try a different channel that is empty or less crowded. It is quite common for many routers to operate on the same channel and newer routers have a function that automatically will switch to the least populated channel. Hope this helps, it has helped me in the past.

Thanks for the response I think this is my problem! I don't live in an apartment complex so I don't think that is the issue but I do think it is my router as I was just at my girlfriend's and was able to get the 5 mbps hers puts out. Any idea how I may go about changing the b/g/n to just b/g? I don't see an option in the router settings. I have a linksys. I now know I'm sort of in the wrong place but any help would be appreciated!
Edit: Never mind got it! Thanks!

Asus RT-AC66U Fast on 5 GHz But Slow on 2.4

I just replaced my RT-N66U with the RT-AC66U and am thrilled with the speed on the 5 GHz band. The problem is that I'm getting worse speeds on the 2.4 band than I got with the RT-N66U on my other devices. I set up a separate SSID for each band and have used inSSIDer to find the best channels, but haven't tried tweaking the professional settings. I flashed Merlin's latest beta. Anyone know what I may be able to do to improve the 2.4 speed?

I have the n66u, great little router. As far as tweaking speeds from the router side, first I'd make sure the mtu is set to 1500. (It should be by default, or 1492 by default, which is also fine. I've seen a few that had it set in the 1200 range, and that's too low). Plus, i've noticed this phone is VERY picky on which wifi channels it uses (especially on the 5ghz side, but the same would probably hold true for the 2.4 as well.) It doesn't seem to like it very much when it's set to auto, i'd hard set a channel (and of course, stay away from channel 6 if you own a microwave, since channel 6 is the same frequency as the rfi that a microwave will put out. So if your router is near your microwave, you'll loose signal when you turn it on )

Wow, you nailed it. What a difference between channels.
Asus RT-AC66U and this PCI_e card is wast of money. Same speed like Asus N66U and PCI-e card. I now, I had both.
Wire is best. 500 Mbit/s to Nas with wire. 150 Mb/s with RT-AC66U. In Asus case, the AC standard is a swindle. Save your money and go for N-router and card.

5ghz wifi issue

I've been running resurrection rom for the last month and change. Flawless performance except the wifi issue. It'd the only rom I've used that has it. I'm forced to use my 2.4 wifi signal. My 5ghz shows up but it's stupid slow and has less signal strength? Even though it's coming from the same router. I've changed channels. Idk what to do. This is the only rom it happens on. As you can see in the picture it's weaker yet coming from the same router.
5ghz by nature of it being a higher energy wavelength doesn't penetrate through walls nearly as well as 2.4ghz so to have a lower signal strength with an equal amplifier power is to be expected. Diagnosing a slower speed is basically impossible to do based on the info you provided though.

Sorry should have also posted a speed test. I'm getting my full speeds. Actually a bit better. I'm getting from 25-30 mbps. Same with 5 and 2.4...its just when I actually go to use the internet for anything it's slow on the 5. YouTube videos barely play in 480.and the router is in a room 15 feet from me. It's no slouch either it's an ac1600. I know it's something with the rom just not sure what.

Disable it from the router or phone? I'm familiar with ipv6 but not with Android. I'm guessing it's rom based because of the drivers because 5ghz worked flawless on OSS before I rooted

yea android's default behavior with ipv6 is bad most manufacturers make tweaks with their official software to fix it but some roms don't incorporate those changes because they may or may not be open source.
