Does anyone know if there is a way to access data while on a call with the Evo 4G at this point? I would love to be able to do that..my wife has a iPhone 4 and the only thing I hate is that she's able to use her data services while on a call!! Got Dang ATT!!
Unfortunately, no. It is a limit of currently used CDMA technologies. The iPhone and other AT&T and T-Mobile are capable of simultaneous data and voice because of GSM technology.
You can use data during a call if you are using VOIP to call, or connected to 4G or W-Fi.

Unless u are on wifi or 4g then no...for now. With this rev b channel sprint may go to you will be able to! We find out in October.
The answer is yes you can access data on 4g and wifi while in a phone call

You can only talk and surf if you're on wifi or 4G, as the call and 3G radio are the same; limitation of cdma technology.

Hello everyone.
I had this phone for a month now, and I kept having this problem...
I don't know if you all have same issue, but I couldn't figure out how I should do to fix it.
Here's the scenario.
1. Talking on the phone.
2. Try to turn on google navigation / map / market or any other apps using data transactions.
3. Any of data related services don't work at all.
I had this problem from the beginning(stock rom, unrooted). I don't remember which rom was it, but I once didn't have this problem but I didn't like that rom and I flashed new other one.
Now, I am using "Cyanogenmod Nightly Build", and still have same problem.
Is it evo's common problem or is it mine?
no problem at all it is the signal sprint uses. It can only either send you phone or data at one time. if you use wifi or 4g you can access data and phone at the same time =]
No CDMA network allows for simultaneous voice/data
Makes cdma feel sorta outdated huh?
Sent from my EVO from the Apple Store.
It is capable of simultaneous voice/data but carriers haven't updated their CDMA revisions in a long time and there's no point now since the only 2 carriers with CDMA have new data systems coming in (Wimax with Sprint and LTE with Verizon) that support it
Yeah, this is a pretty well-known limitation of CDMA currently. 3G data and voice data can't transmit simultaneously. If you have 4G or WiFi you can do simultaneous voice/data.
Thank you all, hope I could get 4g network in LA area asap....
Whenever I make a phone call, I notice my 3G signal drops....when I back out of the phone app and go to internet, the page won't load up. It must have happened when I went on a Rom flashing spree and messed it up. I used to be able to look up numbers to places for the person talking to me over the phone. Has this happened to any of you and how do I fix this problem?
CDMA, more specifically, Verizon and Sprint CDMA, doesn't have the ability to use data when on a call.
SDMA [which Verizon is reportedly working on] will.
(Although I fail to see the point because these companies SHOULD be moving to entirely true 4g networks which are all voip)
I've never been able to do both at the same time. I heard that simultaneous Internet while on a call is a feature of 4g. But I'm not in 4g coverage.

Hmm, maybe I was on a 4G connection. It was awhile ago...but I know I was able to do it. Can't test it since I'm on virus' gengersense Rom at the moment
Its not possible to call and be on the net at the same time, as they use the same radio. You need to be connected via 4G or wifi to place a call and surf the internet, ect at the same time.

QFT i was about to write the same thing
Is everyone getting voice and internet at the same time, my coworker said sprint wont let me cause his evo cant, but mine works the 3g dissapears when in a call so I just tab down and hit 4g to google and talk at the same time

4g allows you to do this not 3g. But from what I have heard with the network upgrade will be able to do this....

Never tried it but I'm curious, does the GPS work while on the phone or is that considered data?
GPS works with a call - not sure if it's still streaming data or working off extended cache.
I was on a call and got into my web browser while on my bluetooth to test it out - works. Pretty sweet
Sprint and VZ's implementation of 3G does not allow 3G+data at the same time. The technology supports it, the carriers have chose not to implement it for whatever reasons.
Use can use voice+data on Wifi and 4G because they are separate from the CDMA radio.
Also while using GPS, the software sort of "reads ahead" when it comes to the streaming of maps. However, if you are on a 3G connection while using navigation, when you switch back to the navigation software while on a phone call, you will find that the phone will continue with directions for a minute or two, and then the map will go blank, even though the location will continue to move, as the phone has GPS location, but no maps to tell it where exactly you are.
Hope this helps
^^ This right here.
So everytime I call someone or receive a call,
the 3g on the status bar disappears instantly.
right after I end the call,
I have signal again immediately.
is this suppose to happen to Verizon phones?
I'm confused because I came from at&t. never had such thing on it.
So is Verizon suppose to be like this?
if so is there any mod/tweak that enables me to use data while calling?

Yes, this is supposed to happen. You can't do voice + data over 3g, but you can do voice + data over 4g. There is no "mod" available for that will enable the use of data while in a call on 3g.
Verizon is CDMA, which doesn't offer simultaneous voice/data like GSM does. Unless your phone has SVDO (like the Thunderbolt) it won't do data and talk at the same time over 3G... The VZW GNex doesn't have SVDO.
For the longest time this has been a pain for CDMA carriers (the few that are left) and they're gonna get past it with VoLTE eventually. You'll still see AT&T run ads comparing their iPhone to the VZW iPhone because it can do voice+data at the same time.
If you're on LTE, you can browse LTE data and talk on 3G at the same time, however.
maguro user here. i was talking about this with a work colleague yesterday, and i said data didn't work at the same time as voice, only with gprs/edge. he had me call his cellphone, while on UMTS/3g/H, and data call was still on as i made the call, and let the phone ring a few times.
Way too often do I see the phone using CDMA/1X instead 3G, is it possible to force the phone to only use 3G? Seems kind of silly when Verizon offers also 4G phones that they would even bother with anything less than 3G nowadays.
Yeah boss its under settings > mobile networks. I don't see it on Paranoid Android but cm7 and I think cm9 has cdma only options
If you force 3g evdo only then you lose voice.

SMS too if I'm not mistaken

Yulp, one would lose voice & SMS functionality - and/or be dealing with lots of missing calls, voice mails & unhappy folks trying to reach you ...
LOL, I would LOVE to have 3G signal - despite all the commercials about 4G/LTE on our Fios TV everyday - at home, it still meant taking our phones 5 blocks over to pickup 3G CDMA. With backup device roaming on AT&T, no problems whatsoever on GSM/3G and 4G's - if calls aren't dropped inside the house, LOL.
With all the tweaking, kernels & various Roms floating out there, the best we can manage is -85 dBm signal but mostly bouncing around, so 2G is all we get on my grandfathered UNL 3G data plan - running WiFi almost exclusively on a 30/25 fiber line.
It obviously depends on what ROM you are running, but in my CM9 by aeroevan I go to mobile networks and pick LTE/CDMA and that works usually.
