Does it delete all of of your internal sd card content?... Like I have all my gameloft games and other apps content on there because it defaults to it.. Would be nice if I could use my external sd as the primary
so no one knows anything about this??? lol
Yes, when you do a Factory Reset, it does format the internal SD Card. I just did it yesterday because I was experiencing some weird anomalies with the phone. Basically the option to share pictures with Facebook disappeared. I just wish there was a down and dirty utility to backup Text Messages and Call Logs like I had for Windows Mobile.

Coming from my EVO, I am used to wiping my data and caches and whatnot and not having to worry about losing backups because they are in my SD card. Now, I plan to buy this phone which does not have an SD card, but I read that it has a partition that acts like an SD card. Is this true? Also if.this is true will it be wiped when I do a factory restore and data wipe in.recovery, or no? I.plan to back up things like apps and sms through third party apps, and photos .to remain there through multiple roms. What I heard is that all your stuff will sync to.Google, then sync back after factory restore, is this true? Thanks for all the help.
CWM recovery doesn't wipe your virtual SDcard when you do a data wipe to switch ROMs.
How big is the virtual SD card?

Well, as big as the stuff in it lol. Its virtual, it doesn't have to have an arbitrary partition limit to it.

hey guys,
Im about to unlock my boot loader, im following the instructions from this thread.
Unlocking Your Bootloader
Words of warning - unlocking your boot loader will wipe your data partition
Things you have put on your internal memory will be fine but all of your apps etc will be gone.
my question is "Where is that internal memory?"
I did a factory reset twice and it erased all my pics, music every thing, weren't they in the internal memory?
Im sorry if its a weird question im confused and I dont want to go into recovery with no rom
thanks XDAs
I stand to be corrected, but the data partition is AKA "internal storage."
The "phone storage" is /sdcard.
So wiping data partition means apps and text messages disappear, but not music or video that would show up if you plugged into pc and used as mass storage

how do I know if my pics and music are in the SD card or internal? I use mass storage to put my files on the phone.
maybe this sounds stupid but how dose the factory reset erase my pics if there in the phone storage (SD)
thanks again

They still always be on sd. As the phone stores all your pics videos etc on the sd partition. The internal 2gb memory is for apps.
I think when you factory reset it gives you an option to tick if you want to wrote your files or something

Simply put, if it shows up on your mass storage, it wont be affected by factory reset

thanks guys, i really appreciate your help.
another guy also had the same problem, after rebooting the phone, a black screen comes up and we had to make a factory reset and it erased every thing even the SD
Thank you both
Ok so I'm not sure if the SD is mounted in a different way to the way they used to. But Spotify is meant to save to the drive with the most space, but it keeps on trying to download content to my internal 16gb rather than my almost empty 64gb sd card!
Anyone else have this problem or any ideas on how to fix it?
Deleted cache etc and re installed and now it's working
how?

how did you set this up in the first place?
i got the very same problem.
installing ancient version of spotify to choose sd location isn't working with kitkat changes to sd permissions anymore, i guess. at least on my unrooted machine.
EDIT
fixes. newest version of spotify seems to do it.
clearing cache seems to be necessary.
great.
So I tried this, and it didn't work for me!
I have other stuff on SD card and i just installed spotify from scratch, everything wiped first and it's still not saving to the SD card.
when i format my SD card to be used as internal storage and i place a ROM on the SDcard to install / update the Rom im on i cant locate the zip at all. Is because its formated as internal and also when i connect to my computer only the sdcard shows not the internal memory any ideas
Let me just give you an other warning, when using Custom ROMs you should not use internal storage, because the moment you decide to switch ROMs and you either choose to or have to wipe /data, strangely it will wipe and corrupt an SD card,, its weird because wiping /data doesn't touch the real internal storage but if your SD is set as internal storage it wipes it.
I learned that the hard way, I switched to a custom ROM on my HTC 10, I was using SD Card as Internal for the first time on this device in Stock Rooted ROM, the very second I wiped /data to do a clean flash, TWRP said "can't mound sd card".
The card was wiped in a weird format so it was corrupted, a 64GB Sandisk Ultra became a 16GB card that wouldn't properly mount even in windows, yes for real! even formatting in Windows 10 wouldn't fix it, I had to use a special tool from sandisk's website to repair the card.
After all of this I searched XDA to confirm this is a real issue, it wasn't just weird bad luck, so if I were you I would be careful or just switch back to SD External Mode.
The final conclusion is this feature is very nice for the regular world with OTA's but it seems in the Root world it can be a disaster, which I'm sure why you could be having issues as well.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the last part you mentioned is normal, internal storage will no longer be accessible in Windows or even Android for you, apps can still install there though, and in the App Manager you have the choice where you want a particular app installed.

No problem, I will tell you my set up if it helps you, I use SD as External, all my Music, Photos, Videos, Game ROMs(SNES, N64, etc), TWRP backups, any ROMs or flash stuff is all on the SD.
My internal storage is usually never touched by me file transfer wise, all apps and other caches and such are stored there by force but I still have a good amount of space because of the SD help still.
And I have a bit of apps, including all the big file sized GTA games, Real Racing 3, etc.
Good luck on what you decide is best for you!
hey there. How should I format my SD card? Ext2/3/4? size? What's the best choice? Got a 128gb card
Thx for reply
hi folks,
So i chose the wrong SD card handling (the merged kind?) a while ago and after ejecting the card to set up a bigger one, I realise I now can't access the internal storage on the phone.
installed apps work fine
I can remove apps fine (but not reinstall!)
i can sideload apps fine (oddy!)
I cannot access e.g. photos with gallery apps
file browser apps cant access the internal space at all.
I cannot install anything from the play store, it just shows insuffucient space
apps like twitter crash.
whatsapp works (calls and text), but cant download photos sent, or attach photos.
There is loads of space free (14.65gb used of 32gb internal).
I also have an SD card with loads of space now set as portable storage.
I have the original SD card that was in before, but not in phone (still shows in storage manager).
Any ideas please?! Before i reset the phone and start again!
I have rooted it, but not sure what to fiddle with (the problem started before rooting).
nope? ok i guess i'll be wiping and hoping that fixes it!
moving to another phone for a while...
just to be clear, doing a full reset on the phone while rooted with magisk is ok? (unlocked bl). don't want to brick. android 10 up to date.
thanks, if anyone out there?
alright for the record and anyone else suffering this, i figured it out, and is slightly embarrassingly stupid.
if you set up the sd as combined storage, and still have the sd, put it back in and use the migrate data back to internal option which is hidden in the storage dot top right menu. voila.
then you can eject card, and still access the internal storage.
what you do if you've already wiped the old sd, i've no idea! you're maybe stuffed? hopefully wiping phone would fix it??
don't ever set your sd card as merged, use portable (i knew this, was a mistake).
so anyway, phone working again yay!
