Back to Stock - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This method is not perfect but if you need to return your phone then it should work. Once you do it, you will be 100% stock, but WiFi is broken as it causes power cycling. Not sure if the network issues I am having is from the restore either but signal seems good but won't let calls or texts come through as they should.
1. So what you do is take a flash-able ROM and remove the extras from the developer... sorry to all the devs but I am not knowledgeable in this department so I took one and stripped the zip.
2. Once you strip the zip of extras you take the system folder in the zip and delete contents... you just want to delete all folders except the system folder, leave anything else that ISN'T a folder then you take a system dump and paste it in the system folder inside the zip.
3. Now you boot into recovery and flash this just like you would if it hadn't been changed. Then you take the stock kernel and flash it via Odin... I did not let the phone power completely on until completing this last step, remember I am a noob so I have no idea if this is necessary.
4. Now you let it turn all the way on and you will see no yellow triangle on boot and you are at a completely stock ROM.
I hope this was helpful to get your phone returned

You're going to want to describe just a LITTLE bit more how you do #2 or else you're going to get a LOT of questions on how to do that...
My opinion, but this is going to cause a LOT of problems that you may not be prepared to help with.

When I used that method I had the android splash screen no matter what, even when the phone was fully booted all you can see is that splash screen staring you in the face and taunting you telling you that you can't see anything on your screen but it.

This should not even be here. The other link above is better and way more eas for people. This should be removed.

With all due respect to the OP (who is genuinely trying to be helpful), I'm really concerned less-experienced users will wind up hosing their phones trying to follow this process.

If this breaks wi-fi and you cannot take calls or text messages why would anyone want to do this? Seems like you are giving up everything the phone is meant to do.

WiFi is broke... because it power cycles the phone. Calling and Texting works, just not like it should, it seems like the phone will only check for new stuff every 5-10 minutes. I only did this so that if you bring your phone back to sprint they don't question you if its rooted or not because as it sits, this way will not be detectable it just looks like your phone is messed up and they should replace it.

Does your "method" resets the counter that indicates how many times the phone has been flashed with a custom kernel/ROM?

Will this method cure cancer?

Then you didn't do something right. Flashing the stock through odin brings your phone back to stock, no triangle at the boot, everything works. 100% stock, not 43% stock like your method.

Thank you, I would have made this easier if I were a serious developer but I am a noob as I have been trying to make everyone aware, I only did it that way as an experiment to get completely stock and it worked to a degree so I hope someone can take what I did and run with it and make everything work

Don't believe so, but as someone who works for sprint. No one should look there unless they are developers themselves

Again Me=Noob I am not a developer I was trying to be stock without having the "android" splash screen in my face when it shouldn't be because with the before mentioned method that is all I could see when booted up fully

Moving this to Q&A and closing. This is not needed and is not real development.

[Q] [Help] Girlfriend wants root

Hello all... Recently my girlfriend and I had purchased the Epic Touch 4g for her. She absolutely loves the phone but the signal strength isn't the best. I have had a Droid 1 for 2 years now and have flashed roms/kernels on a weekly basis for the past year and a half. Can anyone recommend a good starter Rom/Kernel? Is flashing a rom/kernel for the Epic Touch just as easy as flashing for the Droid? I've done some research and I am a bit overwelmed. It seems like clockworkmod recovery is being ran on the Epic Touch but the process for flashing is different? (maybe not, but like I said, I'm a tad overwelmed ).. Also, are there any tweaks after root that would improve signal strength? If anyone can help me out to get us started I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
-Mike
I recommend starburst rom v1.6.. it comes with LostKernel which is a good kernel to use.. for root though, there are dif. methods, i originally rooted mine with Zedomax Kernel through Odin.. fairly easy .. so get it rooted, and i'd go with starburst v1.6 which when flashing it through CWM once you have root, also flashes the lostkernel
I recommend Starburst. Runs sooo smooth and its the only ROM that I see being actively updated. Viper just got into the game so if you don't like touchwiz, you can flash his ROM too which uses another launcher but i would say equally great. Comes down to preference and what works best.
And to get root and clockwork, I followed bubbys
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287776
It seems to get root you have to use odin, but once thats done you can use clockwork to flash ROMs. If you get issues Odin is there for support.
Thanks! Too bad my girlfriend starts work in an hour
Take a look at this thread Id really recommend to check the links I have linked to save you some pain....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309078
So wait... after reading that thread it says that the bootloader keeps a record of everytime you flash with Odin? So if something happens to her phone and we need to take it in, they will know we rooted it?
A good reason to use starbursts rom is because its just way smoother some how and he stream lined the rom and did a bunch of tweaks that make noticably fast/smoother. That's the reason most are using it

Cool, thanks, I got worried for a little bit there... I mean, we got it rooted and everything just fine, but I failed to mention to my girlfriend that there might be a slight problem if we tried to take the phone in ... I figured that problem would get solved eventually but it's good to know I'm in the clear
yeah I wouldn't worry about it, chances are if you flash everything stock theres still a counter chances are they wont notice or pay it much attention. its possible but, I've had friends take their evo in with security off and everything else flashed stock and it was ok.
Bring her to me I will root her. Don't bring your cable I will use mine to plug in her smoothly in order to root through odin.

You can use a jig, it will get rid of the yellow triangle on bootscreen and bring the counter down to zero.
The jig costs $7 MAX, all you do is plug it into microusb while phone is on, and the phone reboots automatically, and everything is back to normal. Process takes about 30 seconds max, and you can use the jig multiple times, with how many ever samsung phones, it is NOT a one time use deal.

Request for Virgin Mobile Stock

Hello all,
So I bought my HTC Wildfire S Virgin Mobile on black friday like everybody else. I waited a few days and then rooted. And then I had the brilliant idea to try installing the CM 7.1 Mod for it. And well, I didn't do a Clockwork Backup, and well, it didnt work very well. The phone got stuck on the HTC screen. So finally I installed a different ROM, JikantaruROM, and I managed to get past the bootscreen but I can't use my carrier anymore. So I was wondering if anybody could either tell me how to flash CM 7.1 Unoffical release to my phone, or if anybody knew a way I could get back to the original Virgin Mobile software. It seems that you have all the other stock roms, so I would REALLY appreciate if someone could share the Virgin Mobile rom too.
Thanks in advance,
Wieland959
Seconded. Although I think mine is in a slightly worse case; I kept flashing roms and ended up in a state where it turns on, screen remains black, then the phone vibrates three times and evidently does nothing. So Wieland959, I'd advise you to stop flashing until someone posts the ROM.
And if someone could let me know how to recover from my current state, I'd very much appreciate it.

Your in the same boat I was just in. My solution was to go back to radioshack with the receipt and tell them it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Just doing the 3 vibrations. I did spend hours trying to search about how to fix it, but I dont think theres a way unless you use a jtag hookup and some sort of fancy programmer.
@Wieland959, If you want. I just tried to do the OTA update through the settings on the phone itself. It would let me download the file(I believe it should be flashable through the cwm recovery), but when I tried to let the phone install the file, I would get the android with the exclamation mark after the reboot. Ill try to post here, if it will upload. But......
DISCLAIMER!!!!
I take no responsibility for anyone damaging their phone using the file here. This file, as far as I know, should only work with the Wildfire S Virgin Mobile USA CDMA model A510C as this is the phone the file was downloaded from.
Thank you for the file, but I couldn't flash it. What might work though, if you are willing is, if you have rooted your phone, to make a cwm backup and upload that here. From there I should be able to recover and then factory wipe my phone. But thank you anyways for the file. I will keep kicking until the phone doesn't boot.
How are you planning on restoring from backup if the phone doesn't even boot?
Sorry, I'm new to this...

Okay. I managed to boot my phone and am able to send/receive texts. The rom I used? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367701] It seems to work pretty well. However, I would still like to have the original rom if someone could still upload it.
VM USA Stock Clockwork Backup
Well, I don't know much about stuff like this, but here is my clockwork mod recovery backup. It's just the stock VM USA w/HTC Sense. I have realized that I deleted the bloatware, so that's the only thing that isn't 100% stock. Hope it helps.
*Unzip the file before placing on you sd card. (Contains the clockwork folder, which contains the backup folder, and then the folder that contains the backup itself.)*

Thanks for the backup! It worked perfect for me!
would you mind if i posted the link on another forum? i know of a couple people looking for a backup aswell.
You should be able to switch back with the recovery no problem. Correct me if I'm wrong, but to install boot into recovery, install from SD, select specific, and select the zip of the rom. Also, I don't have my phone on me so the wording might be a little different.
MMS is a known issue with the rom from what I've read. I don't have it installed personally.
@brandonhun, Thank you so much. You're a life saver. As far as the rom goes, it still have sense on it and there are tons of MMS errors. So just wait and eventually something will pop up.

I haven't done this ROM change but if its the stock HTC Sense go to personalize and get HTC widgets (perhaps its get more HTC widgets) and you should find an update to the clock widget. That should give you the original clock plus a bunch more new ones.

[Q] Possibly bricked... Or is it??

Hi guys... First post here as i seem to be stuck.. My phone is a DHD.
I'm not new to rooting or custom ROM's as i often change the ROM on my phone easily without any problems.. Done it 40-50 times now. Never had a problem. I'm used to the AAHK and know what i'm doing.. However, last night i got fed up of the ROM i had, been having some teething troubles lately so figured i'd put it back to stock and then root again and flash a new ROM, this always solves my problems. Now i always have a few others stored on my SD card incase one won't work (i sometimes get the bad installation, aborted) message and i'm not left without a working ROM, but wanted to unroot and put back to stock so opened the AAHK and proceeded as normal to do so ..
Everything was running fine, writing codes as it should, then when it came to the radio downgrade, it got to a part where it usually moves on to the next stage fairly quickly, but this time it just hung.. I left it a few mins to see if it would carry on, no such luck.. I had no choice but to remove the cable and try again.. Now i'm not a fan of removing cables midway through, but it would have just hung forever so i had no choice..
Anyway.. I can still access the CWM screen and have tried every option to get it to do something, but no matter what i do, i can't get past either the white HTC screen or the Black background with the red triangle.. The files are still there on my SD card obviously, i can access them via a card reader, it's just the phone won't move on as i'm guessing the downgrade being interrupted left it with corrupt data... I would have thought running the AAHK again would have started from scratch and just re-run, but this obviously isn't the case.. Any ideas what to do?

Why are you running the Hack Kit being S-OFF? there is no use in doing that. You could have flashed a different rom from recovery after doing a full wipe and everything might have been solved, if it was a software issue.

Yes i realise that.. That's how i always flashed new ROM's. i could have a new ROM installed in minutes that way, but the reason i was running the hack kit was to put it back to S-ON and stock RUU.. As far as i was aware you had to run the hack kit to put it back to stock, that's the only way of doing it is it not?..
But that's not the problem, my problem now is, getting the phone to show some signs of wanting to get past either screen.

Yes it is still S-OFF, but it won't let me flash anything, run bootloader, access the SD card or i wouldn't have the problem i have..
If i hold volume down and power, i get the usual screen with fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock and image crc.. I've tried every one of these apart from the simlock with the same results.. Nothing.. If i select recovery, it flashes the white HTC screen as if it's going to boot, then i get the black phone with the red triangle and it won't go any further.. If i hold volume up and power at that stage, it gives me the apply sdcard:update.zip (which i can't seem to access or just don't have, i'm not sure) and the wipe data/factory reset and cache options..
The only thing it tells me on the screen is E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I fear i can't do anything with this phone, even trying to get the hack kit to run is a pain and keeps giving me several errors including the ECHO OFF message. I presume this is because having done the wipe cache and data, i've removed the usb debugging priviliges..

Ryan, from now on, know that if you lie on what you did your phone to someone trying to help you is the worst thing ever. Not only because it won't help to fix it but also because I could also have scr*wed your device by doing some flashing on a messed bootloader.
Lying is the worst strategy ever....I am done. You won't get any help from me anymore. Congrats.

You've misread the situation.. I didn't lie to you about anything, ok, i was unsure of what i'd done, but i certainly didn't ask for help to mislead you and help break my phone. Why would i do that??? I genuinely got stuck with a problem that i didn't know how to get out of.. To be honest i've never had a problem with it before and didn't realise you had to know every single piece of info about it, most of which you forget whilst trying to sort it anyway, and i can't remember if it was flashed previously with a stock ROM or not, but what you mentioned sounded familiar which is why i said i think it might have been, but i can't be 100% certain on that..
I feel bad that you saw it as misleading, as i didn't feel i had been, and that certainly wasn't my intention.. But even though you are unwilling to help me again, i thank you very much for the help you gave me, without you it would still be in a useless state. Thankfully, i have managed to get it working perfectly again and will be more careful in future..

Maybe you don´t have a clue on what happened. What's up with me? I will tell you what is going on...i spend many hours of my life helping people in here and in the Hack Kit IRC Support Channel for free, I do it because I enjoy it and don't expect anything in return.
But the worst thing ever is to come accross someone that lies about what he did to his phone. I have been around this site for about 2 years now and never made a brick, do you know why? because I always make sure to follow instructions and ask people what they did in order to provide the best fix, if possible.
When you spend and hour trying to figure out what is going on and trying to flash something and then find out that a froyo RUU might have been flashed (perhaps, I don´t know, not sure...WTF???) and what you did might have scr*wed his phone, it really makes me angry and feel cheated.
To sum up, my time...my decision...maybe you can help him yourself instead of questioning me.

Like SmOgER said before you Glevitan, i wasn't lying, you just got annoyed with me because i didn't give you 100% of the info you needed, and the only reason for that was because i didn't know it!! When you think you're phone is playing up, you try various ways to get it right again, i'm sorry i don't keep track of every little step i did and i'm sorry this displeased you. But a liar i am not.. The term more appropriate would be clueless!!
You have to accept that us newbies just don't know anywhere near as much about these phones and how they work as you do.. It doesn't mean i lied.. What you see as a misrepresentation of facts doesn't mean i am a liar, it just means i didn't give you the info you wanted, simply because i didn't know it, not that i was withholding it on purpose, THAT would have been bad!!
I am no expert like you, i just root and ROM like most people and hope that it goes right...
Like i said before, i really appreciate the time you took to help me and didn't go unnoticed, and it's great that you help people like me for free, but maybe you should take it a bit easier on the newbies if they're not so expert.. My 1st post asking for help and i already feel like i'm not welcome anymore.. That's pretty bad for such a big community!!
SmOgER.. At least YOU understood where i was coming from..
1. Flashing a Froyo RUU is an important stop on the quick path to bricking your phone, and that warning is splashed all over AAHK and other documentation. That's why glevitan is so upset about not being told of the possibility that you might have done it: it's very bad, and users should know that it's very bad, and it wastes a lot of time.
2. Not knowing what you're doing and messing with your phone, and then not keeping track of what you're doing, is extremely unwise. When helping out on XDA, I personally don't expect everyone to know everything, but taking basic precautions really does seem like common sense.
3. Next time, read similar threads that came before you and ask the community. For example: I have X problem. I have researched and found Y and Z thread links with similar symptoms. I am considering trying what A suggested in Y. Is that the wisest course of action? Then you show that you have done your part in solving your own problem, and the community will respect that, even if you're way off base.
Obviously, I personally wasn't there on teamviewer, so I have no idea about the clueless v. lying thing.

Yes i understand what you're saying, and i appreciate most of it. However, it's not often practical or even possible in some cases to write down or note everything you do in a documented fashion.. And like you might have previously missed, i have flashed various ROM's 40-50 times, and the AAHK has worked perfectly for me everytime except the last where it took it upon itself to just freeze on me, it was a computer issue, not a human error.. Also, why would reflashing a Froyo RUU to a phone that was originally shipped as a Froyo unit cause any problems??
I don't understand that part..
One final note, i did have a look through similar threads, but there are so may threads with similar symptoms that it's hard to sift through them all for a definitive answer, and even when you do read them, only one or two parts might be relevant, if any.. So it's quicker to come straight out and ask rather than waste hours trawling through them all to no avail i think.
Whatever happened doesn't matter anymore. Lesson learned.
You seem like a nice guy. Let's back on topic.
Is the issue solved or not?
Try to state what is the current issue. What was the state of the phone when it was working. What happened or what were you trying to do when it got messed up. What have you tried so far. Etc, etc, etc. The more the info the better.
Edit: Nevermind. You *******, you flashed a froyo hboot on your HTC Inspire/DHD after we’ve warned NOT to for over a year. Here’s the fix:

If you don't understand, maybe it is time for you to buy an Iphone. Hacking is not for the lazy b*stards who don't even know what they do. And belive me, your story is hard to belive, running the Hack Kit with a custom rom is not possible...you should have got stuck, that is how it works.

I wouldn't be seen dead with an iPhone.. I hate Apple and Apple products for that specific reason. They don't give the freedom of open source and don't allow real control. But i will be more careful in future and learn from my mistakes.. However, i'm not a lazy bastard hacker as you so put it, and i don't care for the accusation of being one either, please be careful what you say in future as statements like that are completely uncalled for ..
I understand you are somewhat unhappy with me, but please don't resort to slating me. I wouldn't do the same to you if you were wrong.
And yes Teichopsia.. I am a nice guy, thank you for noticing.. I realise now i made a mistake and i just got stuck, but the phone is now running absolutely flawlessly thank you..

[Q] By this point, i just want my phone back...

Its 2:30 in the morning. Its been all day. I dont come to ask a question on XDA unless i literally cannot for the life of me find the answer anywhere else on the whole of google.
For me, whether someone can help me here will make or break me writing off android as the worst operating system ever made, and moving back to iPhone full time.
Ill cut it short. I've owned PLENTY of android devices. All rooted and rommed and modded to my hearts content. Recently traded my i5 for a Galaxy Note 2- i317 AT&T. Rooted first night and running jedi xp14 ever since. Loved it.
Earlier today im jamming to some music with my new Monster Inspirations that i got brand new for half off (great deal). Phone reboots. Comes back. It has a circle with a slash across it (cancel sign) where my signal used to be. Im looking through settings when it reboots again. I soon realize every set amount of time (about 87 seconds) it just crashes and reboots. Flash a different rom. No signal. Reboots. Go back to old rom. Same problem. Attempt clockworkmod restore. No md5sum (it says mismatch.... Clockworkmod recovery is the most POS, stupid, moronic recovery have ever witnessed in my life. the status 7 fails and no ability to say F**K IT, IDC about md5sum JUST FLASH IT BECAUSE THIS IS AN EMERGENCY is just plain ignorant development.) I cant restore. I cant flash a different rom. No one i know knows what to do. No one on the internet seems to have the same problem. I could lose my job if i dont have a fully functioning phone by tomorrow with email and call capabilities.
I have no idea how to use odin aside from when i rooted my note 2 as i cant actually find a guide for it. i have a mame0142.zip thats apparently a AT&T modem i can flash and might save the day. I have no idea how to use it. I'm expected to know everything about everything. No begnngers guides. Im also out of state, in Florida, and now without a phone. Luckily i have a laptop, so i might have a chance at this. This is actually an emergency. I literally cannot sleep tonight until i know my phone is going to be working tomorrow. If its not i'll be driving over it with my Beetle and going to buy an i5 because i can't wait. I need my phone for my job. Also i have a lot of respect for the people of XDA, but please don't call me stupid, tech illiterate, a sheep, or blind because i would rather switch to Apple then have my phone have a critical failure from listening to Mixzing.
I feel like flashing the stock At&T i317 Modem/ Radio will fix the problem. Anyone who knows wher ei can find that and then what to do with that once i get it would greatly be appreciated.
I've no idea what caused this or how to fix it. I really, really, really dont care what has to be done, but my phone NEEDS to work by tomorrow.I dont care what rom/kernel/ anything it has to run to get it back to working, because if i cant get it fixed it's just going right in the trash. ANY help would be appreciated. I really don't want to spend money right now.
Thank you for your time reading my problem.

Awesome, thank you. now, I havent seen a good thread on what exactly you do with a Modem, or at least not one for a beginner. Can i flash it from CWM same as a kernel or rom or is this something that needs special treatment on a computer or something?
That modem is CWM/TWRP flashable. A good check is normally to open up the zip if it has a META-INF its normally a CWM file. If it has a .pda ect its an odin file

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using XDA Premium HD app

Incoming calls cannot be answered or never make it to my phone.

Rooted Sprint Galaxy S6 on Lollipop 5.1.1 with Teamwin recovery
http://tiribulus.net/pix/Phone/1.png
http://tiribulus.net/pix/Phone/2.png
Sporadically lags a bit everywhere, but I cannot receive incoming calls. I use another phone to test and it rings on the calling phone several times, goes to my voicemail and THEN rings on my phone and of course can't be answered. It just hangs there all greyed out until I hang up and takes like 20 seconds for the phone app to disappear. Other times it doesn't even ring at all on my phone. I can make outgoing calls.
The Sprint support guy took me through re-provisioning the phone with some dial pad codes, he did something to the SIM card too , I've uninstalled Drupe (which has been great) and reinstalled it. Tried both when on and off the phone. No difference
Wiped both the cache partition and the davlik cache.
This started a couple days ago when the phone rebooted ITSELF without my touching it and then booted back up into an error that said "Unfortunately, NetworkSystemProvider has stopped.". Couldn't do anything. Tapping OK made it go away for half a second and it was back. A friend of mine managed to get some Sprint specific thing either disabled or yanked and the error went away. Everything seemed to be fine. I'm not sure when the phone issue started exactly or even if it's related to that situation or not. I just noticed today that someone was calling me and I couldn't answer. (I do most of my communications online and don't get that many phone calls, but the ones I do get are very important)
Oh yeah, I reseated the SIM after an error saying there wasn't one after the Sprint guy sent some info to it and that went away.
i am at total loss here. The Sprint guy of course wants to wipe the phone. That would be a monstrous drag for all the reasons you guys already know for a phone that has been working great for over a year like it is.
Please be my new hero and tell me what to do if anybody knows. I have good PC skills and SOME with Android, but this is beyond me.
Thank you SO much.
It also keeps re-sending me old txts
The Sprint store gave me a new SIM card and that didn't fix it either. Restoring a TWRP full image restore from April didn't fix it. A factory wipe in Teamwin recovery didn't fix it. Same exact symptoms no matter what I do.
Ring ring ring ring ring on the calling phone, it finally rings on mine, but is already in voicemail on the calling phone. Once in a GREAT while it will ring just a bit earlier on mine and it will flutter between being greyed out on the answer screen (all the options like speaker etc) and eventually connect the call after a second or two. Nobody I can find has ever seen anything like this. This S6 was working absolutely flawlessly for well over a year.
It also appears I am not usually getting incoming txt messages either, but I am getting only certain old ones repeatedly. Sometimes old voicemails too. It's almost more like it's a remote server issue somewhere.
I hate to say it, but it sounds like your phone is failing and will need to be replaced. But before you do that, here is a relatively easy thing to try:
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...uide-links-files-update-root-restore-t3366862
Using Odin, flash the latest firmware. You are at 5.11, the latest is 6.01. That will restore you to stock OS, take away root and TWRP, but you'll be able to restore those. You shouldn't have any data loss.
Once that is done, go to Settings and System Update and then Update PRL and Profile. See if that solves it. If it does, you can quickly Root and Recovery again.
Good luck!

TWRP (or Teamwin if you like) won't be an issue. Download Odin on your PC, download the zipped TAR file in the first post of my link. Extract the .MD5 in the zip to the same directory as Odin (you don't really have to, this is just convenient. Install the latest Samsung drivers to your PC, make sure that your computer recognizes the phone. Put the phone into Download mode. (Hold the Volume Down, Home and Power buttons at the same time.) Plug the phone into your computer. If the com light lights up in Odin, you are good to go. Flash the TAR using the AP slot in Odin.
This sounds like a lot, but it is easier to do than for me to tell you. But WAIT! In my linked post, there is a video that will walk you through it all!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv0BnfpNxEs
How easy is that? The only thing that Tim says that is no longer true is that data won't be wiped by default.
OOPS WROTE THIS BEFORE I SAW YOU REPLIED LEMME LOOK
I'm sorry man. I'm actually a seasoned PC support guy. I know I'm being a pain. I don't have muich experience with these phones though and it's been 14 months since I flashed this one. I don't know what most of that means over there.
I don't have the regular recovery. I have Teamwin. There IS an ADB side load function in there. Is that what I use in place of the regular download mode? If so, won't that leave Teamwion on the phone since that's what I'm using? Sprint won't give me another one while it's on there.
How do I know if Odin is seeing the phone? It doesn't appear to act like it knows my phone is attached to the computer. Does it have to be in download mode that I'm trying to find out how to get into here
Forgive my abject ignorance please.

Could you be holding the Volume Up button, not the Volume Down button by mistake?
Doesn't matter. If you are in TWRP and you select "Reboot" one of the options should be Download. That will do the same thing for you.
You can also install something like this (if you are rooted) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jc.rebootmanager
And one last thing. You need to have your phone in Download mode to be seen by Odin.
Oh goodness me!! I AM A MORON!!

Yes, that's what I was doing
It is restarting now, but didn't actually erase anything. It looks like it just upgraded to Marshmallow. However, I am being barraged with txt messages so maybe it fixed it. I'll let you know. Thank you very much for your patience.
That fixed it!!! The phone works!!! I didn't even lose any of my data or pix or contacts or anything.
Now all I gotta do is get ROOT back and TWRP reinstalled.
Thank YOU sir!! The other fella too. His instructions probably would have worked if I had pressing the right button.

What I don't understand is why a known good TWRP recovery from months ago didn't fix it, but an OS upgrade did. You'd think that both should work or not. Its' the same phone and a full backup from when it worked fine. Oh well. I'm just glad it did work.
X-Posed?
While I have you here. You don't happen to have a guide for installing X-Posed on this phone do you? I have the zip installed from TWRP, but when I go to install the APK from within the OS I get what you see in this screen and the guy who's guide I was following doesn't respond. It occurred to me that koop1955 might know. Thanks. Even if you don't.
