So what exactly happened?

Sounds strange. What exactly did you flash before hand? From/kernel/mods anything.

Odin you noob. Why do you even waste time with posting such useless garbage? If you can't get back to stock from Odin then post.
I handed my phone to my mother to show her a picture and when she went to hand it to my aunt, my aunt dropped it. I didnt think nothing of it when I locked the screen but when I went to unlock it, my phone restarted and went to a straight black screen and started to vibrate over and over again. I tried to pull the battery and then re-insert it and boot into recovery but when recovery showed up and I went to restore to a previous ROM the phone rebooted itself and started vibrating again. Now I'm at the computer trying to place it into Download Mode. The screen pops up that says to either push Vol + for Download or Vol- for restart. When I press Vol+, the phone restarts and goes straight to a black screen again.
And I'm not a noob, I know what I'm doing my phone just started acting up
And I'm Running the AOKP ROM with Eugene's ICS Kernel with the Tmo_SGH-T989_LC8_Radio
What previous from were you trying to restore?? When you restore a nand back up you have to make sure that the rom you're restoring is the rom that's already installed. In other words if you wanted to restore a back up you would have needed to flash the correct rom before hand. Though I'm confused because if you did try and restore a previous rom say a cm9 back up and you have aokp currently installed it shouldn't work. Cwm will tell you there's a mismatch and it aborts the installation. My guess is this drop did some damage. Your phone isn't making it past post per say of your using pc terms. Can you try and boot back into cwm? You said download mode doesn't work. But does cwm?

I couldn't even get into cwm at all. But now i was able to get into Download Mode to flash back to Stock ICS using Oden and now Oden won't flash The ICS ROM back to my phone for some reason. Oden does recognize my phone but it won't flash anything
I would buy a USB jig they're cheap on eBay it'll force into download mode so u can restore in odin

I don't know what I did but thankfully I got it to boot into CWM and I'm restoring my ROM
maybe hardware problems if you dropped it, wasn't bricked, we usually say bricking a phone from bad flash, don't we? lol, i am not sure. try taking off sim card, micro sd card and battery then carefully put them back on next time if you have problems from drops etc........
Got to admit the whole "Brick" wording gets thrown around way too much for my liking and lets be honest if you are not a noob then you know all the steps to take in my opinion to try and restore your phone. If those steps dont work and you have researched the web then let Insurance kick in if you have it.
Not trying to flame or be an ass but just saying any non noob should know the steps to try and bring our phone back from the dead... I dont think starting a "Brick" thread should be on that list... Coming from the epic touch where the ICS kernel was bricking everyone its just makes me cringe when I see that word.... My bad man if you don't care for my opinion

Here is my 2 cents
Yes people jump the gun and post bricked phone threads but that's probably because they are panicking.. And yes I agree that people should use the search function and read whenever possible.. And yes people should be reminded to do so..
But if you have the time to criticize someone then why don't you try to help them too..
If you have nothing helpful to add then don't post anything
I like my Roms the way I like my women..... Clean and smooth
I had this same problem, when I tried to go in to recovery and do a restore it would reboot its self even while flashing a Rom.what I did was...go in to recovery and quickly clear cache before it reboot then go back and clear dalvik then go back and try to flash the same Rom you had installed. It did work for mange when I was trying to restore.
Hope this helps

so you tried..
1. remove battery.
2. plug in phone to usb on computer with battery STILL OUT
3. while plugged in hold down volume up and down.
4. Still plugged in and still holding the volume up and down, insert your battery.
5. boom choose continue and find download mode.
If this doesn't get you to DL mode then either something broke hardware wise when you dropped it, OR your not being honest with what you did to cause the problem..
I'm fairly a noob when it comes to rooting and whatnot, however i've learned quite a bit since i've started. I rooted nexus s with no hassel. My friend the other day gave me a LG Nitro HD, the phone boots shows the LG logo then goes to the Clockworkmod touch 5.8.2. I have tried installing roms on it, it will install the rom and run then when i try to reboot, the soft keys will flash for 2 mins before showing the LG logo and going back to the Clockworkmod again. Keep in mind there is nothing on the SD card besides the signed_HO!NO!_p930 i have tried other os's too. I don't know exactly what he did to his phone. Please help me out. Thanks a bunch guys

I know I cannot get into download mode, Will be interested to see if Lugman can or not ... So unbricking is not an option at this point for me. Tried that yesterday also.
Lugman please post any progress sounds though we are in the same river of CWM... Why the HOX is so easy compared to this ....
Try charging it then do a battery pull then plug in the USB while holding the volume update. This should bring up a screen saying download mode. Then unbrick from there.

100% Stock, Stuck at "X" Logo on boot. "Dead Android" w/ Exclamation (!) in Recovery
Can someone please help me, PLEASE!!
I just want to be able to download the data from my phone, I don't care about getting android working again right now, I just want to download my photos and videos from the phone. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus that's completely stock, including locked bootloader. I tried using the toolkit and I am able to have it see the device while it's in fastboot but I can't do any of the functions because it wants to unlock my bootloader which will erase all my data! I was just swapping the battery on my phone when this happened. I wasn't trying to do anything special, it was just supposed to be a normal boot up but it just got stuck on the "X". I'm running 4.1.1. My stock recovery shows a photo of a dead android and an exclamation point. It looks like this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jF4CgOU8c...ASKg/m6YOuDRcs4g/s1600/AndroidRedTriangle.JPG
Can someone please help me? I will seriously send you a paypal for your time, just please help me the data from my phone. I am somewhat savvy, like I said...I am in fastboot, my drivers are installed, and the toolkit can recognize my phone without any issue.
Thank you soooo sooo much in advance!
Why don't you just boot into stock recovery and just wipe cache. Maybe some rogue app is preventing your boot up.
You will not lose any data by only wiping cache.

Thank you again so much in advance.
Don't fear....
Even if you unlock your boot loader your data is not actually gone. But let's cross that bridge if we get there.
First things first: take your battery out, take your sim card out, put your sim card in and put your battery in. Boot up the phone.
If that doesn't fix you then the next thing to do is try safe mode. Power off the phone. Then, press the power button and BOTH (yes both) the volume up AND the volume down buttons. Hold them until the phone boots up.
If that doesn't work write back. Don't worry though. Your data is safe.

First, thank you so much for replying.
I should have been more clear in my original message, I took my battery out and sim card in and out over 10 times and I even let the phone sit there for 30 minutes while it was at the X animation to no avail.
I have now also attempted a safe mode boot 4 times with no luck. During my safe mode boot attempts, the phone vibrated a few times but the display just remained at the X animation. It even did it after I let go of the volume key. I'm not sure what to make of this but I attempted it twice with holding both volume keys down as soon as the "google" logo appeared and twice with just the volume down key as soon as the "google" logo appeared. Same thing all 4 times, just sits at the X animation.
What would you recommend as a next step to recover the data? I really only care about the DCIM folder, nothing else matters that much.

When you see this, press power+ vol up to get to the stock recovery menu. There is a wipe cache option there. It may take you a few tries to press both buttons at exactly the same time, but keep trying. No need to reboot in between tries.

Thank you for your reply. I was able to get there and I formatted my cache. After that completed I chose the option to reboot the phone. I didn't do anything special during that reboot like trying to hold the volume down button as well for safe mode, I just let it go. It sat at the "X" animation for about 15 minutes before I gave up and tried it again holding the down volume button, again...no luck. I tried it a third time with holding the down and up volume buttons, no luck.
Any other ideas? Again, I know I've said this a few times but believe me when I say...I really appreciate your guys' help.

I think you need to get into fastboot, unlock the bootloader (if it isn't already) and put a clean factory image on. You'll lose your data when you unlock, but there is a thread in this forum on recovering that information. If you're already unlocked, just flash the boot and system images individually - it may clean up whatever is corrupt.

I tried this, it recovered only 36 files out of a 28 GB data file, and the files it did recover were all just files that have been on the phone since I unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and flashed a stock OS so I could boot up and do all this. Frankly it seems like the files recovered were all the ones that were on the phone since I flashed a rom, none of my previous data are there. I followed the instructions to a T. Am I doing something wrong? Is the recovery software limiting me somehow because I am not using the paid version?
You have been so kind and helpful thus far, please assist me in figuring out what else I can do.
Thank you!
How the hell..
You can unlock your bootloader using omap flash, doing so will not cause you to lose tour data..................................

Hello there!
I have never posted on XDA and I hope this is the right section.
So here it is guys:
I have recently installed the KitKang ROM from a tutorial on this forum (XDA LINK) for a friend of mine on his HTC Desire ...
Now whilst the phone was in perfect running order, I even managed to create an EXT partition for apps on the SD card and installed a2sd, worked like a dream for a few days ... when he was watching youtube one day the phone rebooted and since then only boots into HBOOT, the volume keys do not work to navigate, the power button does nothing, I can't even get into recovery mode.
I have spent 3-4 hours carefully reading forum posts and tried everything ... nothing works as the phone is not even being recognized when plugged in to the PC with USB.
This is the troubleshooting guide I used along with many others! LINK
I've tried my best to resolve this problem and NOTHING is working
I only get the white HBOOT screen and everything else is unresponsive (tried putting the Alpharev img on the SD, that doesn't work either).
JUST TO RECAP:
- No recovery available
- Unresponsive HBOOT
- Phone does not work with USB (only charges)
Can someone please assist me, I will be very grateful!
Info:

I am not a complete noob when it comes to android but not very advanced yet.
I just want the phone to go back to stock or any other STABLE ROM.
Thank you very much for all your help in advance.

Strange it should detect it even if it won't properly flash. Double check:
It's named:
- "PB99IMG.zip" exactly, think it even requires all upper case.
- not "PB99IMG.zip.zip".
I don't mean to sound insulting with the second one, but I've seen it done

Can't figure this out to be honest.
When you boot into bootloader with the PB99IMG.zip image, it should do a scan, then find it.
Then it should give you the option 'do you want to flash it?' or something like that, press power to select I think. Was so long ago since I had to do this myself. Does it resemble anything like this?
Make sure u put the zip in the root of sd.

Did u check the MD5sum of the file? Cant really think of why it reads it then not let u choose to flash it.
Yes I did. Everything is fine with the file. I dont get it either ... I started suspecting the buttons being broken ... but it doesnt explain why the phone turns on yet cant use the power button to select any options. The volume buttons do not function at all. I get into HBOOT just by pressing the ON button and then it turns on.

So yea, I'm an idiot, was trying to do a factory reset because I was having trouble with my root and was going to start over and accidentally deleted everything including the internal storage, now it just boots into the google screen and doesn't go any further. Is there anyway to fix it or am I out of luck? I can't turn the phone off either, it is just stuck on the loading screen.
What brand is your device??

Just for ease and simplicity (to ease your mind) use this tool and go back to complete stock and start over.
Once you've done that read this and thank everyone especially @Heisenberg
1. Download platform-tools, it's in android sdk. You don't have to download the whole sdk pack.
2. unzip platform-tools , and unzip the official img file on your pc.
3. connect phone and pc, flash the official img
sadly , you may lost your data.
Hold the power button for a long time. It should stop the phone (and start it in a second), stuck in Google screen again; that's okay. While the screen is off, hold the Power + Volume Down buttons. Don't release them until you get in the bootloader. You will see a green android lying down with a bunch of options. From there you can flash factory images, continue root or do anything you wish.
if you can reboot into recovery, you can flash everything from there. Press and hold power + vol down for 10 sec to go into bootloader and select recovery from there.
If you somehow ALSO wiped recovery, use ADB following the Nexus 5X how to root etc thread
PS, your data is all gone if you wiped sys and internal storage,
