I have had the Sprint Epic 4G Touch since launch day and today everything on my screen turned into a deep shade of red for a couple of minutes and I thought it was a dead screen I would have to return to Sprint and then the normal color returned out of nowhere. Does anyone know if this is something I triggered or was this just a glitch? The home button, screen off/on, changing screens did not fix this problem. All functions were working from what I could tell and I could make everything out on the screen and it was bright but everything was a shade of red.
My phone is stock and I have Go Launcher running on it with many Go Widgets. I had about 50% battery from what I remember. I may have had the Words With Friends application running at the time if anything. I have a few emulators and ROMs on my external sdcard that were not running but everything else on my phone is normal.
Thos happened to me also. i am rooted with stock kernal. was weird. i rebooted and hasnt done it since then.

it happened to me once since I got my phone but hasnt since. It reminds me of the red render effect in CM 7. That's the best way to describe it.
It's similar to this, not exact but similar..

Because the other variants of the gs2 hasnt come out yet and if they wait super long to give us these updates chances are less ppl will buy the gs2 for t mobile and att

This is extremely close to how it looked on my screen. I tried recreating it but couldn't. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Like I said everything was functional I just thought the screen took a nose dive on me. I'll blast sammy's twitter also.
I've had the same strange red shade. Thought maybe it was a hardware problem; glad to see it wasn't just me.
I've had another weird screen mode issue - "safe mode." No idea what this meant, but didn't notice any limitations. Just had a little shaded rectangle at the bottom left of the screen no matter what I did. Had to restart the phone to make it go away.
I've also had a warning that I was overheating the battery by flying through Manhattan in Google Earth with 3D rendering turned on. Not a bug - just didn't think it would be possible to pull that off when the phone is in an environment of standard room temperature.
See the attached screenshots.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else. Does your ET show (mostly) vertical streaking/unevenness when displaying a solid, light color? Is this something related to AMOLED, or is my ET defective?
Edit: I just realized this is dependent on screen brightness...the streaks are only apparent at the lowest brightnesses.
Thanks.
Screenshots would help others see what you're referring to.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I have to mention that the first one i had, was like this, but it showed like a dark spot in the center of the screen, btw screenshots wouldn't show this problem because is actually the hardware" Screen" In this case.
So i went ahead and brought it to the Sprint Store where i bought it from, and asked for a replacement due to the Screen hardware defect, they kept *****ing at me telling me, that they have to keep it for a whole day, to do "Tests" Im like... well its a hardware issue and i have taken the phone and hardreset it, making the phone as if just out of the box, and showed them the problem again"btw the phone comes with a Gray and Green pure colored background images that you can show to them, that it isn't an Image that you had Altered" , and they can see that it is the screen, and its what i showed to them, and thats when i got my replacement, When i got this one, i saw it again, and it had a white spot... also had various streaks coming from the Top of the screen, went int he second day and got me another replacement, but before i left the store, i stayed about 30 minutes in there, testing the phone out, and downloading all the apps that i had in the phone before. Also Good way to notice this problems( defects ) is dimming the screen all the way, and changing the background to gray, which is a default wallpaper.
This screen didn't have any of the defects that previous ones had, so im a happy camper .
So now what i'd recomend if you can, is replacing/exchanging the phone until you get one with a decent screen.
I get this too when my brightness is turned down. It's most visible on grays. Like the background of the market. It only appears when the brightness is turned down low. There is also this app in the market called "screen test" which cycles through different solid and colored backgrounds. that if you did take it in you could show them that. This issue doesnt really bother me but I have TEP plus there is a one year manufactures warranty so if it gets worse I'm not worried about it.
I finally got around to taking a quick set of comparison pictures. Sorry for the poor quality, I took them quickly with my phone. I also tried to purposely take them out of focus, so moire patterns from the actual pixel grid wouldn't confuse things. I have a feeling this is how all *LED based displays are.
I use the app "Colors" to quickly get a solid patch of color. I encourage a few people to download it, and browse through a few colors (grayish or dark tones - light or bright colors aren't affected as much) and see if they have it. "Grr-ey", "Mighty Slate", "Kind Giant" are good ones to test with.
Things are much more noticeable when the brightness is set low.
Brightness manually set to minimum:

This. I used to have an E4GT and then I got the YSOD and 5 minutes later my phone exploded, shrapnel flying everywhere. Still have a piece of the screen lodged in my groin, doctors said they can't take it out because the risk of losing my junk was too high. Was going to replace it but honestly, it's not worth the risk. Decided to play it safe and got an iPhone 4S instead.
Be careful OP, the YSOD is serious sh*t.

A yellow tint over the screen can be two things. Either your ribbon cable connecting your screen to the board is loose or damaged (new screen will fix the problem) or the GPU on your board was overheating (whole new phone if it burns up). Are you running any custom ROMs? What were you doing when it happened? Have you dropped your phone?

It happened about 20 mins. after using odin to go to stock ek02 I was reading an article in wikipedia and all of a sudden everything had a yellow tint I thought it might just be the site but, then I found it was the entire phone screen. I wasn't doing anything that could have overloaded the gpu and, I haven't dropped my phone at all. After a quick google search I found that it could be a software problem since some other people have also had this problem but, it could also be a defect with the screen.... If you have any ideas please let me know.

I've found something odd with my screen, and although I intend to do an exchange on my S3 I figured I'd share it here to see if anyone else has seen it too.
What it seems to be is that a couple chunks of pixels go entirely black when their section of the screen calls for being black, while the rest don't. I'll try to show you what I mean:
This is a shot of my screen, running a screen test app on an all-black image. It's extremely hard to get a picture of a dark screen in a dark room with a cheap point-and-shoot, and you'll have to ignore the stuck pixels on the camera's CCD, but the red arrows point you to the bits in question (I've also turned the contrast all the way down, and brightness all the way up, in photoshop because otherwise the spots weren't very clear... and still aren't in focus... but in person these are easily visible as two dark spots in an otherwise gray background when you look at the screen in a dark place). You'll want to view it at full size, and again I'm sorry the image is so blurry but viewed in person the "blobs" in the image are in fact crisp edged vaguely tetris-block-shaped pieces of total blackness surrounded by dark gray.
For comparison this is my girlfriend's Sprint S3 screen shot with the same camera under the same conditions and with the same photoshop effect applied.
If you want to see if yours does the same thing, download "Screen Test" from the market, turn the screen's brightness up all the way, change it to the black screen (the second testing screen), then go into a totally dark room. You may have to look just off to the side of the device to see them at first, but once you've done that and seen the spots you can't un-see them.
Lest you think I'm being overly picky (although I would argue any defect in a device I paid $550+tax for is one defect too many) it IS possible to notice this even under normal usage conditions. I kept seeing a spot on the Facebook app every time I would reload a page, and every time I thought a piece of something had gotten onto the screen, but before I could wipe it away it had disappeared. It may be a minor annoyance, but it really bugs me, so I'm going to exchange it. I figured I'd document it before I did, though, just in case anyone else had seen the same things.
A lot of people have this issue, including me. But since I literally never see it unless I'm using Screen Filter at a low percentage, it's not much of a bother.
The only time I see it is when i play draw something.
Screen blobs....
They have plagued Samsung screens for a while now.
The sad part is.. from my experience with the blobs, Even with a device that doesn't have them they eventually show up.
Found on the following

I just got my replacement phone from Sprint and there are some things that are different from the phone that I got at Radio Shack in July. The pictures were taken with my old S2, which is now my mom's so that's why it has a pink care.
First, the colors of the phone are different. The new phone is more of a grayish color. The replacement phone is on the left and the old phone is on the right.

Next, the power buttons have different sized icons and again you can see the color difference. New phone on top old one on bottom.
Finally, the home buttons are completely different. The new one is a purplish color and is long and short while the old one is a gray color and is short and tall. The new one is on the left and the old one is on the right.
Also, the buttons are much more clicky and I like that, but they squeak sometimes.
So, which phone do you have?
I got the exact one you got in July. Also got my at launch .I think they changed a few things because the pebble blue was in such demand and they couldn't keep up with production and probably used a third party to help. Which is why some are different .

There was some cosmetics issues that kept appearing in the original pebble(the one you previously had) and Samsung fixed those issues with the next pebble blue(the one you have now).

It must've been pretty shortly after the main production where they switch the color. I bought my phone maybe a month or 2 months after lunch and it too also has more of a gray appearance like the replacement you received. However I'll be getting that phone replaced because it's dead now so make sure to let you know what my replacement looks like.

I have all possible options that can auto-control the screen brightness unchecked, and the mode set to Dynamic (even if it's on any other one too), and my brightness set at 45 (again this doesn't matter as I changed it to other brightnesses), but I still see the brightness auto-adjust from time to time. It doesn't matter what app I'm in, or just looking at the home screen. Does anyone else have this happen? Is there a way to make it stay where I have it set? It's not really annoying, but I do notice it, and would like it to stay put.
I had this happen on the S4 and note 3. Supposedly it's a Samsung thing. I did see this though

It's happening to me I made a thread on it too, I've called Sammy and done everything I could I think it's a software issue or one of the sensors is jacked up. In any event I gave it a few days and it's not getting any better it's very annoying to me so I'm returning my phone and getting another one just to make sure it's not a hardware issue. It's the only reason I haven't rooted yet

Listen to what i wrote i said im returning it to rule out hardware issues, if the new device does it then its definitely software and illl wait for some kind of an update or wait for a dev to get a handle on it. S4 from doing research had the same issues so yes most likely its software but i have to rule out hardware by returning it and getting a new device. My Note 2 did not do this so im assuming its a TW 4.3 issue
Ok...

Conclusion: It's not a phone defect.
I have done some testing, and concluded (at least for me) it is software/hardware combo as said previously (heating up). Since I have the phone set up exactly how I want it (rooted and all), and I really don't want to return it since the phone itself is perfect (no physical defects with buttons, screen, etc), I kept a really good watch on when it does it, and it only does it after I have the screen on for like an hour or so, and the phone itself gets warm/hot. If the temp stays below 95F the brightness stays constant. Only if it gets up in the 100s I start to see it, so I do believe it's auto-dimming to cool off the phone. I can live with that since it doesn't get that hot all the time. Mostly playing games, or heavy browsing on the web using desktop mode, and when it does do it the change is slight. I only really notice it on white screens. I was worried since I thought it was a defect, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm super happy with this beast. Best phone I ever owned.
On a related note I do remember my GSII doing it on TW. After I put CM on it I never saw it.

No lux is not the answer I tried that too. I just got my new phone after returning it and it does the same thing . As BobbyPhoenix stated I think it's software related too and it's when the phone gets warm and I think how much it adjusts is based on how hot it gets. I guess I'll have to live with it because I love this phone the screen when full blast puts all others to shame. Hopefully a dev will have a workaround soon

My wife's S3 does the same on Lux, maybe acts a little different but basically overall it's schizophrenic. It's possible it's goofier with Lux installed. Now there is another layer to manage.
