nandroid backup - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so today is the day my first flashing of a custom rom and im stuck on the first step in rom toolbox i clicked reboot into recovery to make a nandroid backup my phones been sayin rebooting into recovery for some time now like five minutes how long does this take thanx everyone

What rom are you on? If its stuck, do a batter pull, then when powering on, hold vol+down til you see the bootloader screen, scroll down to the recovery, then hit the power button to select.

thanx thats what i ended up doing im ok now going to take a break and run down my checklist one more time and just maybe by the end of the night i will flash my first rom so please everyone keep your fingers crossed man i am missing web os although i think i will be able to do more with android once i get the hang of it

It's not difficult. Once you've done it once you'll get it. Just be sure to make that nandroid backup & regardless of what happens you can always go back - but you shouldn't have to.
Good luck and welcome to Android

Its way easy and alot of fun IMO just read read read as much ad possible and don't mind asking for help.

Trust me, you won't miss it for long!!!
Mistress of Mischief

And start out right. Get Amon Ra for Recovery and uninstall ROM Manager before you do anything else, THEN make a Nandroid Backup of your Stock setup before you flash anything

Agreed like HipKat said get rid of Rom Manager. You will not learn anything if you keep going through the software to do things like flashing and wiping. shortcuts may be ok when you get better at it but believe me reading reading and doing it the long way has helped me out tremendously. I don't feel cornered when I think something has gone wrong... Good luck

Low signal, update radio?

My cyanogen 6.1.1 slide.. or actually doesnt matter the rom version.
The signal strenght is bad.. even my sister's Mytouch (no slide) gets better reception than my Slide.. and they have a big release time difference..
When sisters has 3 bars.. mine has 0
If I was to update the radio, would my signal improve?
- Would the process just go
1) download radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745874
2) reboot - recovery, apply .zip form sdcard... Radio.zip
3) reboot
Would it be as simple as that?
Im currently on Radio: No idea.. how do i check lol
Theoretically, yeah it should get better. I don't think I noticed a difference, but maybe I didn't look hard enough. Some people have said it has improved greatly, others say it's gotten worse. It's worth a shot. I feel about the same. :x
And yeah, that's how it would go for the process.
Settings > About Phone > Baseband version "47.41.35.10U_7.09.35.10"
In bold is radio version.

I have 7.07.35.02
With this version, I could just download this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745874
to my SD card.
reboot, hit apply zip..
radio.zip
and that would be all?
no extra steps or anything?
I believe so, I flashed the one before it, THEN that one... but I think you will be fine going straight to it. Nothing extra.

Anyone else knows if I can go straight to it?
or do i have to update to the older new, then the newest. ?
I'd go for it.
I know for sure that if it's not to your liking or you don't think it's any better, you're allowed to downgrade.
But since it's not a hard process, try the one in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705064 first. Some people think they got better results from that one.
Was the strength better before you rooted? Upon rooting the phone and flashing the ESPRIMG, it downgrades you to 7.07.35.02. That may be why you're not doing too hot.
I just applied it, there a weird issue tho.
I dont know if its normal or if i should take the battery out or what.
The phone turns on and passes the "T-Mobile mytouch screen" , then goes to the "cyanogen image" and it looks like its ready to go to home screen, then it just shows the cyanogen image again.
Cyanogen(mod) booting.. little circle goin around.. then again Cyanogen(mod).. then Cyanogen(mod).. then Cyanogen(mod).. then Cyanogen(mod)
and it just keeps doing that forever.
Should I take the battery out?
do a nandroid restore? anything??
hmmmm, since this thread was made might as well ask, do any of you know if there is a flashable zip of the 7.07.35.02 radio? I just want to test it around the house haha.

I know you from somewhere mister Xolo I think the same sounds catchy from some forums I would post at recalled as Halostrike, but it disappeared after mafia sold them i think? lol forgot! but anyways in you're case i think that you are experiencing boot loop so your best bet is that if you have a nandroid backup, just restore to it or go to the clockwork recovery and do a wipe, flash the link below...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7534187#post7534187
let it load, reboot once you can, set up ROM and thus you get the latest radio update and stock ROM
P.S Do a nandroid back up and then you can do a wipe again and flash to ROM of you're choice lol... and yeah this is the long process to getting radio update haha

Yeah that would be it if you have a nand restore already =]. I tend to have this phobia of wiping the data on phone via recovery before doing a nand restore even though it isn't need but yes, just nand restore my friend.

Volume Down + Power when booting. (well i guess the power would be the booting, lol)
Yeah just press and hold down on the volume when booting up the phone
man.. applying this radio is a mission (hard)
what you guys suggest I do.. im gonna do the nand restore right now.
Should I just stay stuck with a gay signal -__-?

Not hard, just a bit tedious, it seems.
Well you can try what CBP said... or maybe...
This is just a thought I had, but maybe (if you already have a nandroid backup thats good) make a backup and then flash ESPRIMG again. THEN try the Radio update?
I'm not sure what's causing your bootloop. D:

1)and flashing the ESPRIMG wont break root, right?
2) if anything goes wrong.. the nand would just restore it to the ESPRIMG i had before, right?
3) whats the link to the correct esprimg pls
btw, i also saw this..
this could be my problem too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7950184&postcount=5
So i would just
a) get ESPRIMG from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703076 (which wont break root, will it?) and do I need "SlideEng-package.zip" too??
b) reboot to home, then reboot to recovery
c) apply radio.zip
d) reboot and let it go to home screen
- And if anything goes wrong like looping or not getting pass some screen.. Nand restore will just fix it all, yea?

[Q] Using a SD reader to push update.zip to a bricked(?) epic? (god help me please)

Hey guys, let me begin for apologizing if this is in the wrong place. I've been trying to read as much as I possibly can regarding these problems, and I'm stressed, and tired.
That out of the way, allow me to attempt to explain...
My Epic 4g seems to be "bricked" but only in the "soft way" (I've seen this term used before, and it seems to fit.)
It will still boot into Clockwork 2.5~ but no further, if I try to boot it farther, it will hang at the Samsung Screen and play the music.
Before anyone flames me, please, try to remember what it is like to have no idea what the hell is what after something weird happens.
I am running OSX Snowleopard, and have gotten Heimdall to run, but it will not recognize my epic when I put it into download mode. I feel like I am out of options, but I do have one more idea, and I wanted to run this past all of you ...
Since I cannot get my Heimdall to find my epic when I put it into download mode, would it be feasible for me to get a microsd reader (I found one at walgreens for 20 bucks), put an update.zip on it of like a stock eclair or froyo ( I hardly even care which version now, I just would like a working phone...) and run the update from sd via the still working clockwork recovery??
If this would work, it would rock, but I haven't seen any mention of it anywhere. I don't see why it would work, but then again I am not a wizard.
Any suggestions? Comments? Reassurance or Guidance?
If anyone could point me towards the best update.zip to try and push via the microsd reader, I would be eternally grateful. Or in general, if you have a better idea, I'd love to hear it...
Thank you so much in advance, to anyone willing to give me a shot or lend a hand...

I have NEVER tried this but it sounds like its worth a shot...i would try CM7 just to get something booting (and its a small file to DL).
But you should definitely "find" a copy of windows (google it *cough cough*) and use bootcamp (search in spotlight) to partition your hard drive and install it and have a mac with osx and windows lol i have xp but you can try newer...
its pretty easy (instructions are detailed) and you will never have to worry about "soft bricks" because you have odin
Yeah, I've toyed with the idea of bootcamping again, it's just such a damn pain, and so many of the "findable" windows on google are infected with godknows what. By CM7 do you mean cyanogen mod 7? I've never used cyanogen mod, if you could point me in a good direction I'd appreciate it.
Also, thank you for the civil reply... I have noticed a degree of distast for those who really don't know thier **** on many fourms, but I figure, everyone is starting at some point....
So should I look for a update.zip for CM7 and attempt to push it? Are there other considerations I should take into account? I really see no reason the microsd reader wouldn't work, and given that my phone is rooted and has clockwork operational on it (god willing it's as workable as it seems)....

Your welcome, and HERE is CM7 (cyanogen mod 7). This is just to see if your phone still works (seems to me like it will) and after that you can root with clockwork 3.0.0.6 (if you want ext4). Be sure to have an EXT4 compatible rom when u boot into CWM. You will need to flash it after it converts your filesystem.
If you dont mind having a "dead" phone i suggest trying bootcamp...some files dont have "god knows what" and you will be able to odin EC05 prerooted. ALOT easier lol by dead i mean get no calls and sms, etc..
Just download file, put on sd card and flash...should work. I hope it works for you!
I'm going to give this a shot -- Got nothing to loose either way, and I've heard sweet things about cyanogen anyway. I'm trying to see all this as a learning experience. I was a bit freaked to try custom roms before, but at this point, why the hell not, right?
One question: what is this EXT4 business? I've seen it popping up, and I think I missed the boat. What would you suggest for a EXT4 compatible rom to use? ( Are you on an epic, by the way?)

Lmao yea i have an epic. And ext4 is just a faster filesystem than RFS which is stock. Also most roms have journaling off which means you
cant just pull your battery and stuff like that because you will have corrupt data (most likely). Journaling enabled (like in stock with RFS)
will simply keep a journal of what the system does and in case of an improper shutdown (battery pull or phone falls and batt. pops out or
batt. drain to 0) when it turns on it will "recover" from where it left off. The only bad thing about this is that it writes to the nand (i
think) ALOT...maybe more than RFS but really it would kill your phone in 3-4 years and you probably wont keep it that long anyway lol
I usually run bonsai but you have to sign up to their forum for the download...i dont think im allowed to post a link. but ive heard Syndicate
rom frozen is also VERY good. And quick. But in short, if you want a speedy epic, choose EXT4 lol
Also you can try MIUI 1.3.5 rom..Its really cool. Sort of like best of iphone and android in one. Im actually one of the guys trying to port it now...
but im not a dev lol
Good luck!! and trust me, custom roms are fun. Especially when you become a flash-a-holic lol
Yeah, I get the feeling it's pretty addicting. I'm going to start by flashing CM7, as you said, just to make sure the thing isn't an expensive paperweight. Next I am either going to try Syndicate or try out the froyo stock w/out bloatware....Since I had it rooted months before the OTA happend, I'd been stuck on eclair. I may just be happy with a working phone, but as this point, i've tasted blood.

Thanks again for your help! I truly appreciate it!
As long as you're rooted with a working ClockWorkMod and can manually access your sd card, you can flash anything to your phone. You may want to make sure you format Data, Cache, And Dalvik Cache 3 times before flashing a rom though. Also, you may want to upgrade to ClockWorkMod 3. I have it referenced in my signature. It will need to be booted into first, while it converts to ext4, then a suitable rom like Syndicate Rom Frozen will have to be flashed.
Have you tried to fix it with an update.zip? My assumption is that this would not work for a number of reasons.
Your questions are not new, and have been asked more than once in their own threads as well as general question threads. GOOGLE search your question with "XDA" in the search bar. It's your friend, and it will answer your questions.
Just to recap:
1. CWM 2.5 or 3
2. Flash suitable rom
3. Shutdown properly, no reboot or battery pull!
4. Boot into CWM
5. Backup, and then immediately restore! This will re-engage Journaling and prevent future data corruption
6. Use Google! The more questions that are asked repeatedly, the more threads people will have to dig through to find answers.
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.
I have been using google extensively, and it's just that many times I would get conflicting or not quite as clear as I was hoping answers, but yes I understand what you are trying to point out here. Syndicate seems like my best best, and as such I am going to need to get to CWM 3. I went to the thread, I am assuming I should use the new version (EB13) as opposed to the the DK28, correct? Since Syndicate is an EC05, I should go for the newer one?
Excuse me for my ignorance, again, we all start somewhere...
Thanks!

I can also recommend Bonsai and Midnight as fantastic roms. I use them all, but Syndicate is my current. Syndicate EB13 is the one you want. EC05 didn't change the firmware, it only modified the modem. I've tested EB13 as well as EC05 with Syndicate, switching back and forth, with no visible problems. If your phone is on EB13 or EC05, then Syndicate Frozen 1.1 should work nicely, it's linked in my signature.
Yeah, unfortunatly it was stuck on DK18 for a varitety of reasons.... I hope that doesn't change anything...

If you're able to use Odin on your computer, just use my CWM Odin link. You'll find EB13 pre-rooted with CWM 3 and you can flash that straight from the computer. Just be sure you have a Rom on your SD card first so it's ready to install from the recovery menu.
Odin is not a possibility right now, however, I just got CM7 to boot. And although it seems to have no service (or it could be because airplane mode toggles on and off faster than I can blink) it seems to be at least functional in a baseline way. I'm going to try to use one of the CWM backups I saved on my computer to see if that works... Thanks for your help!

Good luck to you! Hopefully you read the following:
What does NOT work in CM7 for Epic::
GPS
Camera
Multimedia Messaging
Bluetooth In-Call (Hands-Free Profile)
WiMax 4G (This is absolute LAST priority, DON'T ASK ABOUT IT)
I don't develop personally, but I make it a habit to try and understand what's going on, and as such I rearrange and personalize ROMs to my liking, and subsequently carefully test them to maximize performance and battery. I like to share my understanding and insight to help alleviate the task from developers who already do so much work in an effort to pay them back!
Yes, I am aware of the current limitations of this incarnation of CM7, it seems as though right now, cell coverage radio is going a bit insane (toggle rapidly airplane mode) with my setup. I am currenly looking into how to get CW3 on it.
Hey I managed to gain access to a windows laptop, installed odin on it, and attempted to reflash with what I imagine are the stock files, but it's failed twice...
Which files should I be using? My phone WAS on DK18, but all i'm looking for now is to get it working in a stock way, then I can venture out again....
Any help?
Edit: Odin said it failed, but it seems like some stuff took, it will boot to the samsung screen, do the sprint yellow boxy thing with music, go to the glowing S, it'll pulsate for a while, then it goes to a black screen sat for a good while., Now when I reboot, it hangs at the first samsung screen again..
Does it look like I just used the wrong files, or was it a usb issue?
I'm a bit perplexed...
I'm a noob as well. You need to watch qbking77 on you tube. He goes through the exact steps and exactly what files to use if using odin in one of his videos. The links are all there as well. I have hade my epic a week and have done about everything in his videos to help me understand what I am doing.

Why is it that ROM developers just can't seem to make ROM's that can boot up properly

I just can't figure it out. Every Jelly Bean ROM I have used so far has had the same problem. After using the ROM for a few days, and I decide to do a quick reboot to refresh the system, after only a few times doing this ever, the phone will either begin to boot-loop, or most of the time get stuck at the Google logo splash screen. Every time this happens I am forced to open the Toolkit and flash back to stock, and then reflash CWM recovery and install a different ROM and try again. Is it just me that is having this problem? I don't understand how it is so difficult for a ROM developer to create a ROM that can successfully boot up the OS every single time. Someone please give me a straight answer to this, because I can't figure it out.
If you are talking about 4.1 yeah I have noticed all of the ones Ive tried do it, something to do with the way the partitions are handled on jellybean.
It doesn't actually get stuck on the Google screen if you wait it out it'll eventually boot (usually 3+ mins here but I've read can take up to 10 minutes) worst I've had to do is clear the cache not actually reflash the rom. Now the OTA is here for GSM once they build from them instead of the dev version and AOSP they should get better same for CDMA whenever it comes
So you blame ROM devs?
Shame on you.

It's very frustrating for someone who is new to this. I have only very recently started installing custom ROM's. I had no idea who is to blame, although atleast now I get an idea of what the reason for this problem is.
Regardless of whether or not the problem you are having is caused by ROM developers(by the way, it isn't), don't act like an ungrateful douche.
WOW!!!
Touche. Ungrateful sucks. Glad you're learning something, though, I hope.

Definitely the wrong way to go about getting help... The fact that you just started flashing ROMs is the issue. You think the Dev would upload the ROM if it wasnt booting? I wouldnt
No way I would be ungrateful to a dev. This is time consuming **** and I didnt do anything but download and compile the source. Must take much more time to add in tweaks and theme them and all the other stuff they do
dude really???? Wrong way to do this dude....and its you messing up I have been on a jelly bean Rom and have never had a boot loop, I have flashed multiple roms and mods with these roms and have never had a boot loop read the instructions and wipe your cache also don't use reboot apps,,,,, if you want a better Rom take your computer sync your repo and build it from source your self and stop whining
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
To be able to learn something first you need to throw the arrogance into the dust bin.
Developing something is not everyone's cup of tea. If you are not happy with a particular ROM keep on trying the others but first give the developers a chance to rectify the bugs by reporting it to them.
Starting a thread like this will neither help you nor the developers.
My sig.
Post 2.
That'll show you how to install a rom, to make sure you're doing it correctly.
Enough bashing, guys...he's new.
Stop being lazy and dirty flashing roms.. Start clean, Wipe everything , only restore user apps via TB.. or just stay away from installing kernels and keep the stock one
You can't blame the Dev because the rom won't boot.. 9/10 its the user problem
Are you using the proper version? Only time I loop is because I skimmed the thread and didn't pay attention, tried acting smarter than I am, or messed with things i shouldn't have. Research before...avoid potential disaster later. And in either case, I quietly restore and nobody knows about it.

Can not boot into recovery after rom manager updated my CM9

Hello, Wondering if anyone here could help out. I recently went from MIUI US ICS rom to CM9 and love the latest build of CM9. I had not tried a backup of the rom after flashing to CM9, but noticed that Rom Manager updated at play.google.com and then I decided maybe I should make a backup of CM9 sine it was shaping up pretty nicely as I've been setting up apps, etc.
Well, I can't get into recovery. I can boot into the bootloader and it shows Revolutionary as the boot loader and I can get into Fastboot but if I toggle down to recovery and press the power button it just jumps back to the bootlloader screen. I can't get past this.
I'm tempted to put a different recovery on here now as the rom manager didn't work out even though it came stock on my CM9.
But before I risk bricking my phone, I was hoping someone here could back me up a bit and give me some input. I really don't know that much about this.. I can root phones, install recoveries, etc., but if something goes wrong I'm not knowledgeable enough to actually understand what went wrong and how to fix. I am guessing that recovery is not actually installed here and that Revolutaionary (what I used long ago to get root) wasn't planned to be the boot here.
Help please anyone!!!!!

It's been a while since I've done someting like that. By this you mean place a recovery package on the zip card, press the power button at the bootloader, then let the phone install the recovery when it runs thru the fastboot screen?
If yes, great, I remember that, but which recovery should I download? And what about rom manager on CM9? Does it care which recovery is installed?
I appreciate the knowledge here. IT sure is appreciated when things go wrong for folks like myself!
Oh, I should point out that I can stil boot into the phone and use it. The whole issue is limited to getting into recovery to create and/or restore backups of the rom.

1st off, I should shun you for being corrupt with CWM, but I'll help ya out.
Use the search bar and type in "Smelkus recovery" find a themed recovery zip you like and rename it "PC36IMG.zip" and place on the root of your SD card (in no folders) boot to boot loader and let it search, press volume up to update recovery and boom! You have new, better recovery.
As for flashing CM9, check out Jmzs CM9 nightlies. Its better and (supposedly) almost has Wimax working. Once you flash an Amon Ra based recovery, CWM becomes basically useless. So ditch it for the good of everyone. ENJOY
EDIT: Because I'm NICE, here's the link.

Wow, much nicer recovery than any I've used. Thank you for that! I didn't actually intend to put on CWM, but now I'll make it a point to avoid . I did search for JMZS CM9 nightlies. Was going to try it but not getting any hits to lead me where I think you are leading. WOld I find JMZS nightlies here at xda or outside? I did a google search and got nothing other than your post to me above.
Anyhow, thanks for the help folks!

Well can I pick your brain once more? I decided to update my wifes phone from MIUI to CM9. She happened to have Clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2. on the phone which I recall was put there by whatever rooting routine I used. Before installing CM9, I tried to update the recovery with Smelkus from the clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2 that's on the phone to smelkus, but when I try to flash it, the smelkus recovery just sits there "parsing" so when I bail out and go back to check, the clockwork version recovery is still there.
This phone was rooted with Revolutionary but I notice that S-ON is still active. I read that S-OFF is not necessary to install a recovery --- at least not the clockwork version that is on this phone. I'm not sure if that's causing the problem or not. Any advice?
Try this one. It should work.

Gave it a try, same result. What do you think might be going on? I wonder if I should try and flash it with the same one that's stuck in the phone first then try the others? Clueless really what's happening.

Hello... d-b-s
By chance have you seen this recovery located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29266458
I have a spare evo that is sorta-bricked or sorta screwed, not sure which... It has a SD slot that seems to be locked out. Nothing can be read from it but I did get it working once but lost it. ANd it also doesn't boot unless I have a power plug in it, but otherwise, it works, flashes, etc.. it's got CM9 right now in it but again somewhat useless without the SD memory.... anyhow, it's been a plaything for me figureing I'll either fix it, learn or kill it. None has happened yet.. but in searching for getting a recovery installed that uses the screen hard buttons versus the volume (this rocker switch on volume is broken too), I installed this recovery and it's different than anythign else... fully menuized .. real customized, and thought I would mention it to you.
If you have a look at it, let me know what you think.

I'm familiar with twrp. I don't much care for it though. A dew tricks with smelkus is it has touch scrolling, and the bottom buttons work as up+down+back+select..
Also I might know of a fix for the SD card not being read. I'll get back to you with that.

d-b-s,
That would be fantastic if you had a clue on the SD card. I did try a FastBoot string that reset it once the first time and it worked, but somehow I lost it again. I think a corrupt or defective SD card started the whole problem and restarted it when I put it's data SD back in.
Do you ride a motorcycle or have a boat? If so, stop by here please www.streetglo.net and pick yourself out something. I'd like to send it to you. You have helped me more than you know. I can't reciprocate with knowledge but I have other ways.. Let me know what you see you like. Thanks!!!!

P.S. Yea, I know you don't want anything for your help.. Just pick out something you can use and I'll be a better man for it. At least I think it works that way!

I really appreciate the kind gesture but I wouldn't like anything in return. Helping people with their problems and teaching them what I know is enough of a reward.
Please do me a favor and enjoy yourself. Best of wishes to you.

Need some help after bad rom install/reset

I attempted my first rooting and install of darthstalkers rom last night. the step by step instructions were well laid out, and the process was pretty smooth. however after completing the rom install, and began getting various errors such as 'gallery not responding', 'omacp has stopped working',etc. over a dozen different errors in total. kies wouldnt connect to restore my settings, etc.
i decided to flash back to stock, and followed the instructions perfectly, which again were very easy. kies connected instantly on stock, and everything seemed ok. however im still getting the same errors as i was with the darthstalker rom. now i bought my s3 outright (its not part of any package), so i have no warranty issues, however my phone is completely hosed now. i cant send texts, cant view email, nothing. i'm honestly regretting ever doing this.
any help/tips/suggestions so that i can go back to the way i was? ive tried everything that my googlefu has led me to, and nothing has worked.

I did it last night, but in my tired confusion, i may have fudged it up. going to do it now and ill update in a few minutes. Thanks for the help thus far.
when flashing to stock through Odin you retain the same cache and therefore you can have some issues of force closes..which is why a factory reset is always best....and mandatory when going from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4
That's a very stable ROM and I'm surprised at the issues you had. I have a feeling it wasn't the ROM or anything you did persay but bad flashes happen which it why most of us have a nandroid to fall back on just in case. Sometimes a re-flash does the trick to fix problems.

Ok well i wiped cache/data in recovery mode and all seemed ok (not sure if its worth noting, but the recovery menu/screen was totally different from last night - the one last night was touch screen with ++++ before and after each menu choice, and the one today has me using the volume keys to move and power to select).
i went to do kies restore and it went smoothly, but is now sitting on the last option, 'restoring call log', for quite a while. So i guess ill update this again when kies finishes up.
10 minutes later and its still sitting at restoring call log. should i abort this?

you can if you want
since call logs aren't important as long as your contact list is restored

seems to have worked. all my contacts are there, and i can send/receive texts. only issue is, none of my apps, settings, layout, wifi, etc transferred over for some reason. so i guess im stuck manually entering in all of this data. what a ****ing hassle this was.
do any of you trusted members do this for a fee? i really liked what i saw with darthstalkers, but cannot be bothered to go through this again.

Settings, not much can be done about that. It's needed to wipe them when going to a custom ROM (same goes when updating to avoid issues).
Titanium Backup can save your Wifi, apps and apps data (requires root). Also can save your texts and call logs with it.

Sounds like you booted into stock recovery which is what you wanted.
I used to think it was a pain restoring settings all the time but after 100 or so ROM's over various devices its takes 10-15 minutes to do that and install my apps form the market (I only use maybe 20 or so and maybe are one I have apk for already.
Everyone's first time is a bit awkward and messy... gets fun after you do it enough
So its possible it was just a bad install? This isnt a very technical or tough thing to do, but becomes a serious pain int he ass when things go awry. Would love to have the darthstalkers setup, though. I just hate to do it and have it all be FUBAR'd again.

Keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM also means flashing the updates (as it can always get better and there are bugs to fix), meaning that you will have to factory reset every time (which resets your settings, cleans your apps and such). So it's something you kinda have to get used to when flashing.
That's also why I suggested Titanium Backup, it saves a lot of time when it comes to apps, wifi, call logs, texts, etc. You'll still have to go through your settings, emails and accounts though.
If you wanna go ahead and give Darthstarkers another try, re-download it and make sure you follow their full instructions.

its true. the first time around is always a little bumpy. as long as you are doing things correctly and installing the correct files, things will only go smoother with time.
this is just my preference, but once i've transcended stock (to aosp), i dont mess around with kies anymore. i know you had your things backed up via that route but ask around and you'll see, there are a lot of useful apps out there that can backup and seamlessly restore everything you want after flashing.
dont give up. everyone deserves the performance and style they want on their device. next time you're ready, let us know. between myself, hednik and a few others, we can get you the best way to do this right here in one thread versus 20 different sites/threads/opinions. cheers
I didnt think about the future and rom updates, etc. I think ill pass for now, my time for this is limited. I'd love to have something like darthstalker working, but i cannot afford to spend the time if it all goes to hell again.I do sincerely appreciate the help, and if theres some way i can say thanks other than clicking thanks for each of you (already done), please let me know.

It's basically the way to show your gratitude, you've said thanks and pressed the button, can't ask for much more :highfive: Especially from a new user.
I hope you find the time to enjoy one of those custom ROM at some point and we'll be here if you need help again. Good luck!
