[Q] SLCD to amoled screen swap - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

has anybody ever tried this? I had to get a replacement from asurion and of course I ended up with an SLCD one, and my defective one is an Amoled.....I know how to change the screens but wondering if there are any differences that would prevent me from swapping out the screens before I send the old one back.

I literally just got done answering this question, oddly enough. Probably too soon for you to even find it in a search!
To answer your question, no, it won't work. The drive electronics on the board are different which is why the hardware version on the board must be different. AMOLEDs are driven differently and SLCD requires provisioning for backlighting.

That's a bummer. I've had several replacement phones and I got lucky each time and got AMOLEDs

[Q] Root HTC Incredible Sony Version (SLCD) to get Samsung AMOLED LCD to work?

I've been hunting around and haven't found any good information on this so I thought I'd ask.
I have an HTC Droid Incredible with an SLCD in it and the screen has cracked. Unfortunately, the SLCD seems to no longer be available in the market (I've looked everywhere). All I can find are the Samsung AMOLED versions.
So here's my question: Is there any way to root the Incredible (originally designed for the SLCD) and get it to work with the AMOLED version of the LCD?
I'm thinking no but I thought if the connectors are identical, then maybe new software would allow me to run a different LCD in the phone.
Thanks.
I've a set with broken screen too.
How can I tell if it's SLCD or AMOLED?
I'm also looking for a replacement screen.
The label on the back of the screen has this numbers:
P/N: 60H00291-00P
If you can see the screen well enough to navigate to settings>about phone, if the hardware version is 002 its amoled, 003 is slcd.

Sorry to be a pain about this but I'm not asking how to tell the difference between the parts. There's tons of posts about that (from looking at the hardware version, to the part numbers on the back, to walking into a dark room and turning the phone on).
The question here is: Can you root a DInc that shipped with a Sony LCD and get it to work with a new Samsung LCD (AMOLED version)?
Thanks.
I don't think anyone has ever tried it. I'm not an expert, and i have never attempted to do what you are doing, but it seems like it could work. Actually i'm thinking you wouldn't even have to root the phone, can't you just grab the most recent RUU file and restore the phone from that? The most recent would have to include both AMOLED and SLCD drivers in it? Is a root required to restore from a RUU file? I have never done it haha. Also you would have to check if the connectors are the same, i think chances are good that they are the same though. Anyway, good luck and keep us updated as to whether it worked or not.
any update?
Hey JetCity,
Same issue as you, can't find the S-LCD anywhere. Did you have any luck swapping out for the AMOLED?
Thanks.
Martin
I cna't imagine it would be an issue, set your phone to the most recent stock RUU and then install the new AMOLED screen. id be very surprised if it didnt work.

I wouldn't rely on that. It used to say 002, then I flashed GB and it said 003. Really weird. I'm sure mine is AMOLED.
Did anyone ever get this to work?
I have an Incredible with a cracked SLCD, but I have a spare/working AMOLED from a parts Dinc. Can someone point me to a RUU to download that might have both drivers so I can possible use my spare LCD?
step aside from for the hardware geek
No driver in the world is going to help you make an AMOLED work with an SLCD. You're problem is hardware on the board. The drive electronics for the SLCD and AMOLED are different. One very notable difference in the electronics would be no provision to drive a back light on an AMOLED.
As for finding SLCD and AMOLED screens, I've looked and they're out there. I haven't looked into this, but the hardware inside the Nexus One is nearly identical to the dInc and that screen may work in it.
just to clarify, is it the screen GLASS thats broken or the LCD part that's damaged? (or both?) I've replaced the glass part on my incredible before, the display screen is a separate part, unless they incorporated the 2 together for the slcd version, but my old amoled was separate from the glass, you can buy glass kits on ebay for fairly cheap.

[Q] Incredible SLCD replacement

Hello,
I had to replace my glass screen since it cracked and I was able to do that, but in the process, I also screwed up my SLCD. I have the Verizon version of the phone with an SLCD and it seems I need the Sony version. Can someone confirm which one I would need to order in order to replace my SLCD? I don't want to end up ordering the wrong one. Most on eBay seem to be for the TMobile version.
Thanks

I wish I knew. I ordered an SLCD from HTC Repair Parts cause my phone is hardware version 3 but the SLCD Doesn't work cause it doesn't have the right ribbon cable connection. They can't seem to track down what I need and they tell me that their screen works for everyone else.
I compared the connection in my AMOLED phone to the SLCD and they had the same connection so just for Grins, I pulled the AMOLED out of my phone and put it in the hardware version 3 phone and all it did was show a bunch of random colors but mostly green. I'm lost on this one. I must have a freak.
I believe there's 2 versions of the SLCD screen: Sony and Samsung. You just need to contact the seller and ask which version they have, if they don't specify.

[Q] Question About Swapping Motherboards

I am one of the "lucky" few who have a phone that reboots when using GPS Navigation and now pretty much while doing anything intensive on the phone. When it reboots I get the 5 vibrations and flashing green LED. A battery pull and sometimes a long wait period are required to get it back up and running until it chooses to reboot again (same cycle). Flashing back to stock and un-rooting does not help, nor does flashing a different radio (I've tried them all). Anyway, this problem is all over the net and it seems the only cure is replacing the phone. I don't have that option because I have no warranty.
Enough of the background....
I am planning to purchase a 'for parts' Inc off Ebay. There are several where the screen is just broken but everything else supposedly works (clean ESNs). I intend to buy one of those and basically transplant the motherboard into mine. I've had mine apart already, so I know I can perform the task.
My questions...
1) What if the 'parts' phone I purchase has a SLCD screen? I plan to use my AMOLED screen. Would it work to use my AMOLED screen with a motherboard from a a phone that currently has an SLCD?
2) Any other reasons my proposed methodology won't work? I don't plan to replace anything that required soldering, so this should be pretty straight forward.

The AMOLED device won't work in the SLCD device because the drive electronics integrated into the board for the AMOLED are different.

Thank you. That's just the information I was looking for. <mashing the ty button>
My Dinc had the same problem as yours. Basically the ball array that connects the processor to the board is failing.
Take a look at this thread..
Solving the thermal problems of HD2 or other snapdragon
I heated my processor and managed to save my phone. It is definitely a last ditch effort, but if you are going to buy another motherboard it might be worth a shot.

Wow... That's pretty hard-core phone repair! Just...... Wow.
I had done just the basic pc builds & repairs until I attempted this. It was a little intimidating, but I love my phone again!

[Q] Upgrading the hardware?

Ok so I recently learned how to completely disassemble and reassemble the Evo, so my question is whether or not it's possible to install a different screen other than the stock one. Perhaps a SAMOLED or S-LCD (like the one in the thunderbolt)? Also is it possible to replace the cellular radio or does that require replacing the entire logic board? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am a noob.
I remember a question like this not too long ago. You can't replace any hardware from your phone because the other components wouldn't match and would most likely malfunction your device. The screens wouldn't fit because of the unique shape the phone is and so on. Sorry I can't give more detailed description or examples. I'm just basing it off what I read in this forum a couple months ago.

yeah I figured there would be some difficulties, but still c'mon, how cool would that be. Seriously though, are there any experts out there that have actually tried it? Please feel free to chime in.

[Q] Capacitive buttons stop working

Today is a very sad day for me somehow my new htc one x's capaticive buttons stopped working i restarted and even factory resetted and they are not working anymore
my previous htc hd2 was stopped digitizer working too. How unlucky i am.
I guess I neet to install CWM and using on screen button
which rom do you reccomend? ı used to install couple roms to hd2 but i havent tried with one x
thank you all
Factory reset will only reset it to the rom you have flashed. Have you tried flashing the correct ruu for your phone? When you say it's new, how new? New enough to return to where you got it for replacement?

my htc one x touch sensitive buttons have stopped working like a week ago, i then installed the coldjellybean by which i got that onscreen buttons after 2 days the buttons started working n i thought of selling the set but as i was going to make a deal with a person that day the problem appeared again, i dont have the warranty left and the screen replacement is quite not an option. Is there any trick that i can work on to make them work again.

it could be just the digitizer and on ebay you can find it quite cheap.

i took the phone to my local market n came to know that the their isnt any separate capacitive buttons cable, it is embedded within the lcd, so if i have to order then whole complete lcd + digizer + module, and i checked the online purchase price is almost the same price the local market ppl are offering that is near 60 dollars.
Just that i am not sure why does the buttons stopped working and if somehow why they started working n now have again stopped ;(

not sure what you mean.. look at this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Touch-S...865?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d02ec98e9
anyway it happened to me with another phone that a portion of the digitizer stopped working for a few days, then it started working again and then it stopped for good and had to replace it.

hmmm, well actually i was reading all the other threads with this issue and came upton this
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696552
Which shows "DO NOT try to replace the screen by yourself" and i can see that on my set that its rather v hard to do this thing instead everyone says to buy the whole module as it is very complex thing to do.

it is hard to separate the digitizer from the lcd but it's doable and nothing like the iphone digi+lcd that uses an epoxy adhesive. so if you are carefull (or have someone skilled doing it for you) you wont break the lcd and you'll save quite some money. it's true though that the new digitizer wont stick to the lcd as well as a "genuine combo digi+lcd" and you will notice dust building in between the two. my advice, if you know someone that is skilled enough, try get the digitizer off without breaking the lcd and if you manage that then buy the new digitizer. otherwise since you said that changing the whole digi+lcd is not an option you can always try sell your one x as damaged or use it as an expensive paperweight.
best of luck mate, i hope you solve it one way or another.

haha that paperweight thing made my day... well thanks for the advice but i think i am going to wait until it gets ok by itself as it happened before until then icecoldjelly rom would be a temporary solution for the onscreen buttons. Thanks anyway
