High Contrast Makes Dark Videos Hard To Watch - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Has anyone else found that watching movies with dark scenes is very difficult? I enjoy having a true "black" black, but everything is so dark, even with the brightness turned up to max, that a LOT of detail is lost in dark scenes.
I also have some video that I shot with my Samsung Moment of two friends dancing in a bar, and when viewed on the Moment and on the PC, I can see clothes and colors even though its dark. On the ET, all I see are black silhouettes.
Is there a way to adjust the contrast so I can see what's going on in dark shots?
Thanks!

Try going to settings>display>screen mode
There's three presets you can use

Change your screen preference to movie...

Thanks for the suggestion. Changing that setting helped slightly, but it was still to dark, and lost too much detail...
Did some trial and error in the Market, and found an app called Screen Adjuster that seems to do the trick.
I LOVE the high contrast in bright scenes though!

I noticed this a lot in "The Dark Knight" movie I have on my phone. Not that I sit through an entire movie on my phone but during downtime at work it is difficult to see detail in a lot of scenes on that movie.

Dirty screen effect

Hi guys,
i did a search but have found nothing regarding this kind of problem.
My display shows some kind of pattern on plain colors.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16054199/screen.jpg
Its worst on grey and white, (certainly) not seen on a black screen, and its almost not visible on the highest screen brightness. But, its very distracting on everything below and also visible in pictures etc. if looked closely.
I come from a S2 which had not this effect. Is it a faulty screen or a normal effect of the pen tile matrix?
I see the same thing when my screen dims down before it goes to sleep.

Just before it goes into sleep mode? (which afaik is even darker than the darkest setting while it`s awake).
I clearly see it under medium backlight setting, the grey elements of the market are a place where i always see it.
hate to break it to you, but that's just how the screen is(especially when the brightness is turned down & on plain colors). i've had 2 Nexus' and both did the same, even the ones on display in my local verizon store are the same way.
Turn the brightness up and it will go away. It's a quirk of the screen technology.
Allright, so i have to live with that... Thanks for your answers!
Is it possible to edit the levels of the automatic screen brightness?

If you're rooted and have Clockworkmod you can use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377410
Just make sure you meet the requirements and follow the directions in the thread. I have used this on a Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus and didn't have any issues, even though it is in the CDMA form.
I am not the dev of this mod, just passing along the info.
awesome, thanks a lot!
I wonder if there's some kind of deeper hidden meaning to the pattern, some kind of subliminal message jk
Terminators run on Android...

[Q] How do you have your display set?

I've got mine set to Movie and the brightness slider set to six clicks up (under the e in "Brightness level").
This seems to be the sweet spot for me in terms of getting it as close to the S3 display as possible. Anything else seems to make it either fuzzy or grainy.
Curious about what others are doing.
I have mine on full brightness plus dynamic

Lockscreen wallpaper quality?

Is there a way to make the lockscreen wallpaper good quality like the homescreen one? It seems the lockscreen is allways a lower quality, also while im at it is there a status bar transparency mod for jedi x?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Turning off "Ripple Effect" in Lock Screen Option will make lockscreen quality same as home screen. Of course, you won't have anymore ripple effect or ink effect but oh well
That gets rid of those dark blotches on the ls as well.

make sure the wallpaper you're using is the right resolution, if you crop the photo it will stretch to fit and ruin quality
Finally found a thread where I can help out! Okay, so I have this problem ALL the time; not only is it a big deal finding photos with the right resolution for this gigantic phone but it is also a pain setting up the wallpaper because you're only subjected to a certain size by the system. Here is how I found my ways across this problem.
1. Use wallpaper wizardrii here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twistedapps.wallpaperwizardrii
Use this app to stretch the wallpaper to fit your launcher.
2. If your photo is too small of a resolution to where it'd look like a Super Mario SNES game on your background use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed
Snapseed not only has a sexy UI but is very reliable and I use it for low resolution photos. Now what you do for things like this is adjust the sharpness of the photo, not to where it looks like it was drawn by a pencil but to where the blurs disappear. I also adjust the contrast and saturate my photos but only when it's a sexy wallpaper.
Finally, and this is the last of all resorts.. use Photoshop for your computer and literally adjust almost every single pixel to resize your wallpaper to a newer and bigger size. This is my last resort ever, I've done this once, it took 6 hours for that to be fixed and I'll never do that ever again.

Sweet....thanks, so what does that all do to your device? Battery battery life, better color saturation or whatever? I'd like to know the point of doing this to the device and benefits...or if its just for personal fun

So no one is willing to explain any of this to me?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
all it does is adjust the screen color/gamma. any difference in battery life would be a placebo effect. it might sound kind of pointless but i know that i and probably alot of other people would go insane if we lost the ability to adjust the screen like this. im a sucker for screen with lots of gamma reduction, the colors look so much more crisp and vivid; you can make it look damn good. decreasing the gamma will help make the colors crisper and less washed out, and the blacks blacker. you can also change the color balance -- some people notice a yellowish tint on the stock rom, adjusting the color values you can completely remove any tint and achieve a pretty true white.
edit: regarding screenshots, you wont see anything from a screenshot. screenshots show what the system is rendering, not what the screen is displaying. heres my settings, they may be a little too dark for you:
gamma adjustment - 0
red - 0
green - 0
blue - -3
color multiplier-
red - 153
green - 156
blue - 199

Thanks for explaining this to me....i known screenshots wouldn't show the difference. I meant just a screenshot of peoples settings....so this is what i have that i can change...i think some peoples are different. Any suggestions? Lol
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Yeah some people's are slightly different, it dependant on the rom they are running. It's hard so say what to set yours at, some screens just don't look the same as others at the same settings. I would just get a few pictures you really like, put them on you sd card and use them as a reference to adjust them, just pick whatever looks best to you, that's what I did.
If you use Franco kernel updater app, trickster or tkt from play store you will have more options. Gives you ability to calibrate the screen to correct for poor color, mine is beautiful, that's why I can't leave this phone.

Settings will be different from display to display. Also from brightness settings can potentially have an effect on how things look too. Unfortunately there is no universal plug in these numbers and your display will look great. Also, a bit of subjectivity can come into play here as well. As mentioned using a picture of something you know and adjusting settings until it looks right is a great idea.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790325 <-- that thread has a discussion about various settings, including a spreadsheet in the OP where there is a list of them. Which once again shows that people's settings are all over the place so you probably will have to do some tweaking to get them how you want.

And by calibrating, it will automatically change the colors for you for the best looking results?

Not automatically, you will need to put in things manually look up calibration color galaxy nexus as there are lots of posts and charts saying what people use, pick one that is close and tweak it from there

[Q] Background color for Google Play Books with T700

I use my Android tablets for reading, using Google Play Books. I prefer a bright white background. With my Nexus 7 (2013) it's a pure white background, just the way I like it. With the Tab S 8.4 I can't seem to achieve bright white. It's more like a light sepia. I know sepia is a choice but that's a very dark (to my eyes) background. I've also played around with the Screen Mode but none of the choices seem to change the GPB background at all. I've turned Reading Mode on and off but I don't see any difference.
I know there are other reading apps but I like having a large library stored in the Google cloud and the ability to switch devices and have the bookmark change with it.
Any suggestions on how to change the background color for just Google Play Books?
I'm having the same problem with my Galaxy Tab 4 7.0". I've tried everything you have and it also doesn't work. I've also noticed that when I click the home button on my device it turns bright white just before closing so I know that the app and device are capable of displaying the correct color.
I know this isn't an answer to your question, just letting you know that you're not the only one. In fact your post is the first I've seen about this issue and I've been Google searching different variations of the question.
Those are my settings, and whites are white as should be.

I seem to get better whites with Basic rather than Cinema. When I use Cinema white has a strong blueish tint, especially on video. Whites on Basic are fine while watching movies, YouTube, etc. Google Play Books is now better with Basic and Reading Mode off but it's still not as bright a white as I would like.
For example, I was watching Ex Machina. An early scene has a helicopter flying over a glacier. With Cinema it looked like a sea of blue. I changed to Basic and the snow and ice turned white. You lose the oversaturated colors with Basic but the blueish whites really bother me on the other settings.
